It's time for anti-slavery action, Mr. President

By David Abramowitz, Special for CNN

Editor's note: David Abramowitz is Vice President, Policy & Government Relations for Humanity United and Director of the Alliance to End Slavery and Trafficking (ATEST), a coalition of U.S.-based human rights organizations working to end modern slavery and human trafficking in the United States and around the world. ATEST recently issued “The Path to Freedom,” a road map for the second-term Obama Administration to follow as it works to fulfill its commitment to eliminate modern slavery.

It’s been 150 years since President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation declared in the midst of the U.S. Civil War that all slaves “shall be free.”

Today, the word “slavery” still conjures up horrifying images and stomach-churning thoughts about the most disgraceful days in U.S. history.

This shamefully evil chapter still cannot be fully explained, because no facts can possibly answer how humanity allowed it to happen, and why we didn’t stop it sooner.

Similar questions haunt the United States and countries around the world today - how has slavery evolved into a multi-billion dollar illicit global industry, overshadowed only by drugs?

Perhaps we turned a blind eye because modern slavery looks so different than it did in 1863, when it was largely in the open.

Modern-day slavery manifests itself in many new and nuanced forms, often described in the 21st century as forced labor or human trafficking. Or perhaps we turned a blind eye because we can’t conceive how slavery can persist in 2013.

Human trafficking is viewed worldwide as morally reprehensible, and slavery is illegal in every country.

Read a plea from a survivor to a president

As a result, modern slavery is underground and masked so well that we may not recognize it in our own communities. For example, construction workers, housekeepers, farm workers and too many others in low-paying industries are brought to the United States by labor brokers who promised a job, but enslaved them instead.

Today’s slave is shackled by insurmountable debt, coercion, fear and intimidation. She has been lured into crossing a border or leaving home for what she believes is legal work, only to find herself trapped by an unscrupulous labor broker who seizes travel documents and threatens retribution by law enforcement or immigration authorities, or violence against family members if she leaves.

Slavery exists today for the same reason it did more than a century ago: money. The United Nations Office of Drugs and Crimes cites estimates that human trafficking in all its forms yields $32 billion dollars in profits every year.

That number may seem shockingly large at first glance, but is easily explained: the rise of globalization, demand for cheap labor, and supply of vulnerable workers. Massive, international companies use complex supply chains in order to, for example, deliver shrimp harvested in Thailand to markets in communities like Topeka, Kansas in a matter of days.

Most of the severe exploitation occurs at the bottom of these chains, where unpaid Burmese immigrants may be forced to stand in a shed for hours on end, peeling the shrimp we will enjoy days later at our dinner table.

The story varies tens of millions of times in a range of industries around the globe. You’ll find trafficking victims in the palm oil plantations of Malaysia and Indonesia, brothels of Phnom Penh, construction sites and homes in the Middle East and the suburbs of the United States.

So if we know that slavery and human trafficking exist today, how can we stop it?

There is no simple answer - trafficking and slavery are complex problems, encompassing human rights abuses, transnational crime, labor violations, humanitarian law, migration and immigration policy, sexual violence and child welfare. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a solution.

The world’s business communities, governments and civil society must collaborate in order to create a comprehensive approach to the issue. For example, non-governmental organizations and law enforcement can reach out to communities to educate, help free victims, and advocate for and provide essential services to survivors.

The private sector can help ensure supply chains are free of human trafficking, forced labor and other forms of modern slavery, and that their employees do not personally reap the benefits of trafficking.

Philanthropic institutions can fund and produce new learning from path-breaking initiatives such as finding new ways to help victims make the transition to survivors, mapping supply chains and creating new tools to combat trafficking in supply chains, and cultivating technological approaches to combating trafficking.

And governments can ensure that they are not inadvertently involved in modern slavery, and institute and fund policies that can ultimately eliminate human rights crimes in individual countries.

In September, President Barack Obama announced several initiatives to fight modern slavery, including an executive order to strengthen U.S. policy on human trafficking in government contracting.

He also promised to provide relevant officials and agencies with training and guidance programs on human trafficking, and to expand resources and services for trafficking survivors.

Obama’s pledge to step up his administration’s efforts to combat modern slavery was significant.

Now, he must deliver on these promises, and his first priority must be working with Congress to reauthorize the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) - the cornerstone of federal anti-trafficking efforts.

The TVPA has provided critical resources and new tools for those on the front lines in the fight against human trafficking and modern-day slavery, but was shamefully allowed to expire in 2011 due to political stagnation. Reauthorizing the TVPA is critical to maintaining U.S. leadership on this important issue.

As we honor the Emancipation Proclamation, the symbolic end to one of America’s darkest times, and observe January as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, I am hopeful that we are on the cusp of taking meaningful steps toward a modern emancipation.

Let us all ensure that, 150 years from now, our descendants do not ask why we allowed slavery to continue, and why we didn’t stop it sooner.

Your religion is a large part of the problem. For centuries every form of religion has been used to justify why one form of people are superior to another. Why whites who are a minority on the planet seem to use their religion to classify everyone as sub-human. Yet the root of your religion comes from the middle east geography where whites don't exist.

Until mankind has the courage to shed religion and realize that all people are equal this will continue. Until the almighty dollar which is a religion unto itself is stopped, we will have slavery. Until religion actually follows it's own teachings without "picking and choosing" we will have slavery.

Ultimately until the world can get along and agree on the same basic human rights, we will have slavery.

This isn't a religious issue you vomitous bigot. But since you brought up the subject it's sin at the meanest level. God hates it. Men of reason and compassion with or without religion hate it.

Try for a few moments to get the religious hatred out of your gut and your filthy mouth and try to learn something.

Slave owners today are not religious. HELLO? Let's repeat that for those who are just a little thick between the ears. Slave owners today are not religious. It's not about religion it's about denying a man or woman, boy or girl their most basic rights of freedom, dignity and hope.

You know what hope is? It's something a slave can never have.
You know what compassion is? I doubt it you hateful excuse for a human being.

but that's just me, hollering from the choir loft...

@Choir Loft Oh do I love when a racist talks against racism or a bigot talks against bigotry or someone like you talk against people like yourself. The hatred you are talking about, I only felt it in your words.

and @steve: the bigots are the naive ones who bash religions and freedom in general in order to embrace the pipe-dream concept of everyone magically getting along as one big happy family on a grand scale. Here's a tip: focus on your own and be tolerant of others with different views. It's much easier, and logical.

You should read about Muaritania before you make an assumpstion. It is an all muslim black country that has 10 to 20 percent of its population in slavery. they just out lawed it in 2007 and only one case has been prosecuted. There were slaves all over the world before the united states was even discovered.

Choir Loft I can see what you are getting at, but religion did begin the age of slavery in all religions. Christianity had multiple slaves during the time period of the Roman Empire to the rise of the British Empire and such. Now the issue here is that most people used religion to justify the slavery of Muslims or other different groups. It is the same as other religions who enslaved Christians and so on and so forth as well. Religion has been a part of slaver and it isn't something they can deny.

Pastor Rick Warren put it this way, Men have used God to justify all sorts of things that God finds repugnant. I don't feel the need to fend them.

However, I understand where you could get that Christians are unloving and part of the problem. I have felt that way in the past myself, and toward some I still could feel that way. The Bible says that not everyone that calls him Lord, Lord are his followers but those that do his will. You can not have faith without obedience, and you can't be obedient without faith. What are Christains told to do, 1. Love God 2. Love your neighbor/enemy/everybody. If you see someone justifying this, or being hateful then suspect they are not talking for Jesus or God. This is a sin and like all sins separates the sinner from the love of God. He hates sin for that very reason, and cries out for us to turn away from our sinful nature, and accept by faith his gift of forgiveness. I'm not a softy, or unthinking, but after I have examined, and even participated in all the world has to offer, I find His way to make he most sense and be the most effective.

cbsimmons60, God doesn't find slavery repugnant, which is why people were able to successfully use the Bible(s) to justify slavery for centuries. In fact, God's own biblical laws allowed for slavery. He just preferred that Jews not enslave fellow Jews and, if they did, that they release them after a set period of servitude.

Your religion? Yes, the Old Testament has people categorized in groups. When Jesus came along and brought the New Testament he proclaimed the Old Testament wrong and flawed. Why do many groups still insist on utilizing parts of the old discarded Old Testament? It was actually Christian followers who started the Abolistionist movement. We can all thank Christianity for ending slavery in the USA. So, sometimes we must thank religions for ending bad things like slavery. Yes, St. Patrick ended slavery in Ireland. It was his religion that called him to end slavery. Relgion can be a force for good or bad. I guess we shouldn't just blast religion. We all have religion/beliefs. Some of the biggest butchers in history were Aethists: Mao Tse-Tung, Stalin, Hitler.

During the colonization period, there were many crimes against the native peoples, especially in the Americas. Yet it was the church that most and best stood up for their rights. The religious who came to establish missions resisted the slave trade. Many priests like Bartolome de las Casas brought the story of oppression back to Europe. Pope Paul III in 1537 condemned slavery in his bull Sublimis Deus, saying among other things that the Native Americans: "are by no means to be deprived of their liberty or the possession of their property, even though they be outside the faith of Christ."

THANK YOU! I dont get this current day fascination with Lincoln that everyone has. The man was a brilliant tactician and by all historical accounts brutally honest. BUT he was no more morally corrupt than any other politician or slave owner.

Contrary to popular belief Lincoln did not go on a moral crusade to free the slaves. No, he went on a crusade to repair a fractured nation; freeing the slaves was a by-product of that. With the North holding a slight edge over the south the rest of europe(that was there at the time) began to inch in their involvement.

The only reason Lincoln signe the EProc was to prevent foreign nations from involving themselves in our war. As france and england were already freed countries they could not willingly engage in conflict in the support of slavery. Which was the only choice that was left to them thanks to the proclamation.

That's true, Scott. He has never tried to be fair or good as everybody sees him. He just gave slaves freedom to turn them into consumers, and that's the same reason why countries like England did it. England fought for the "freedom" to make the slavers starts earning money and so buying their products. That's the only reason.

What concerns me about this article is for what my family and forefathers went through to be lumped in with human trafficking. America will never understand the deep wombs that African Americans have suffered at the hands of white America and the slave trade. Please do not include the challenges of African Americans with ANYONE or ANY OTHER event in the history of America. That is hurtful, because the events in this article and most other articles, books, films, etc. does not compare to anything near to what me, other African Americans, our families or our forefathers ever experienced. It's like someone that has never lost a love one saying I understand to someone that just experienced a lost. Stop it and quite saying get over it as well. Since America created today’s melting pot that it has created, the sad history of slavery against African American has been put on the back burner. If you really want to hear or understand about slavery against African Americans connect with honest African Americans that do not have an incentive (monetary, fame, exploitation, etc.) and discuss slavery that’s if someone really wants to correct any of the wrongs of this sad Event.

I've done the research. You're incorrect.

The primary reason that Lincoln did it was to transform the war into a battle explicitly over the issue of slavery. This would strengthen the Union's hand by discouraging Great Britain and France from interceding on the South's behalf. It would also encourage slaves to flee the South, depriving them of labor. And finally, Lincoln did it because he knew that he *could* do it. What Lincoln had always said about slavery was that he didn't think the federal government had the authority to end it. But Lincoln could now end it in the slave states, as one of his war powers.

People will tell you that Lincoln didn't care about freeing the slaves, but that's hogwash (to put it politely). He cared about preserving the Union *more*, but that doesn't mean he was indifferent to slavery. The whole Republican party was founded on opposition to slavery.

The Emancipation Proclamation gave the North power to take any property from conqured Southern regions. Slaves were "property" in the South. So Lincon gave an Executive order to basically allow his armies to take control of conqured southen property meaning slaves. Once the north had slaves, under Northern law, slaves became people, not property. Kind of a clever little deal by Lincon.

Lincoln's EP freed no slaves. It was merely a political gimmick. As his Secretary of State William Seward said, "We show our sympathy with slavery by emancipating slaves where we cannot reach them and holding them in bondage where we can set them free." Slaves in Union border States like Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Missouri and Kentucky were not freed. Lincoln himself said that he used the EP as a "lever."

This is an extremely complex issue. What makes this even harder, is we are really one of couple of countries who do not support it like the rest of the world. We are very proactive at the local, state, and federal level in combating this in our home country. Other countries openly rebuke it, but I must say law enforcement wise are more lassez faire about it.

It isn't a politically partisan issue and it isn't a religious issue.

If any of these individuals knew OR WORKED WITH victims of this crime in America they would get a glimpse of the horror that is among us.

No, Larry, we are not enslaved by the "yoke of oppressive taxation". Americans actually pay relatively low taxes by global standards, and they vote for their representatives to determine both how much they are taxed and how government revenues are spent. Although taxation is technically unnecessary, since the government has monopoly control of the system of measurement used to transfer the value of your labour to goods and services you need and want – i.e. the money supply – to all intents and purposes your taxes pay for infrastructure, national security, support for the needy, and many other things in the general interests of the Union.

Unfortunately for you, your view of government and your preferred social system is supported by a minority in America, hence you never seem to get what you want on election day. That's how a representative democracy works. It isn't a perfect system, but I've yet to come across a better one, and that's why a couple of centuries ago people voluntarily chose (by majority decision) the kind of representative democracy in which you, and most others in the developed world, live. Therein, since you don't seem capable of understanding this, is the difference with slavery – slaves didn't chose to become slaves, and they didn't vote for their masters.

      January 11, 2013 at 10:17 am | Reply
      • Tim

So you are saying that since American pay relatively lower taxes than we should be ok with paying more? I guess since gas costs 25 cents more a gallon across the street from another gas station I should go to the one with higher price? We pay taxes so Biden can go back and forth between the Caribbean every day during Christmas for the illusion that they are working on a deal to avoid the cliff when all they did was kick the can down the road.

Well, someone spent it – otherwise we wouldn't have this debt hanging around. GW takes office with a nice surplus during a period of prosperity. He can do several things... pay down the debt, lower taxes, improve infrastructure, etc. What does he do... lowers taxes – ok, I can see that (I don't agree, but I can see it)... gives back a boatload to the people... kinda iffy – may have done better paying off debt. Then goes to war (twice) – with no way to pay for it and continues to scuttle any hope of being able to reign in, or even moderate, corporate greed... which causes the melt-down of 2008. Yea, bonehead Clinton signed the Gramm-Leachy-Bliley Act – one of the dumbest moves of his presidency (dumber than Monica) which started the down-slide...

So, where does that leave us... in debt and no way to pay for it. And we still have some of the lowest taxes (level of education, healthcare, infrastructure, etc.) in the developed world.

So, what do you want? Low taxes and a third-world economy or higher taxes and to lead the world?

      I'll chose the latter.

You're pretty spot on Fred, but there are also things that Obama could, and should, also be doing. The very first thing I would start with, would be to close all those loopholes that people like Warren Buffet and Bill Gates get. Their tax shelters are costing this country billions.

Then I would start enforcing the rules of Dodd-Frank, that limits the Wall Street speculators, from effecting the cost of gas and oil, as it has been. Then he could remove the bulk of our combat troops and heavy equipment, back to the US. Leave a few platoons, and special forces, for training and special ops. That would save us many billions a month.

I know this is controversial, but I would also legalize marijuana and regulate and tax it. That would generate hundreds of billions per year, not to mention, NOT imprisoning millions of non-criminal Americans. Prohibition didn't work the first time, I don't see it ever working this time.

And the biggest thing, would be to get a budget done. Yes, unfortunately, that means higher taxes, but he MUST cut spending across the board. When we're a trillion in debt, per year, we're in deep trouble.

It's referred to as indentured servitude. We must work until we earn enough to buy our freedom. Sadly, the price is so high that most of us have to work until we are quite old and decrepit.

The emancipation proclamation did not free all slaves. It only freed slaves in those states that has seceded from the Union, exempting those southern states that were controlled by the Union. Slaves in the north were not freed. How did the author not know that?

Actually, the *only* slaves it freed were those that were in states controlled by the Union. It didn't free the slaves in the Southern states still controlled by the Confederacy, because it had no power to do so. Emancipation followed the Union army.

Actually, it freed them in all of the states that were in rebellion. It just couldn't be enforced until the Northern army got there. Murder is illegal even if committed in the middle of the desert, you just can't enforce any penalties until the police get there.

"That on the first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free;"

Just the confederate states were addressed in the emancipation proclamation. Later in the text it even exempts border states (i.e., VA, MD, PN) from the proclamation in fear of ending up with the capitol surrounded by the confederacy. All Union States where not "free" states until the 13th Amendment.

Bill, I have a degree in American History and wrote two dissertations on slavery and the American Civil War. Lincoln did not free slaves to put an economic burden on the South. He was not an ardent abolitionist, that much is true as he originally favoured relocating slaves back to African colonies, but Lincoln's motivations for ending slavery were not financially based even though the by-product of doing so would be removing a system which was both supporting and hindering the Southern economy. Slavery helps no one. As for Jeff H's comments, the Emancipation Proclamation did not need to free slaves in the North as individual state legislatures had already prohibited slavery in most cases.

Slavery started the day humans came upon the concept of property and had the means of keeping property. Slavery is likely as old as agriculture and that began 20-50,000 years ago with the taming of animals and selection of plants. The first slaves, which continues today all over the world, were women and children. The Bible codified the slavery of both and if we are to make any progress at all, should discard this manuscript where it belongs: in the fire. Respect is earned, not granted by presence of a penis or witheld in absence of one.

Unlike what happened in ancient Rome for instance, where the trade in slaves was often in the hands of rich merchants and took place in slave markets, the Egyptian slave trade was seemingly small scale [30]. During pharaonic times no slave markets seem to have existed. But even if slavery was never as pervading in Egypt as it was to be in other ancient societies, such as the Greek or Roman, it appears that slaves were traded widely from the New Kingdom onwards.

Male slaves were at times significantly cheaper than these accomplished females, probably depending on their abilities and the uses they were going to be put to. Their price could be as low as 20 kit of silver.
Prices during the 21st dynasty were not the same as those during the New Kingdom. Caution is therefore required when making comparisons. The stela of Sheshonq lists the following:
There were brought the people of the .... of the great chief of the Me, who came with the statue: A Syrian servant (named) Ikhamon ...., a Syrian (named) Ekptah; the price of the first was 14 deben of silver; his majesty gave [for the second] 20 deben of silver, total 35 deben of silver, the tale thereof.

Like all ancient population statistics, estimating the number of slaves in ancient Egypt is based more on guesswork than on knowledge. In pharaonic times their part in the population may have been greatest during the expansionary stage of the New Kingdom empire, when whole populations were enslaved at times. Thutmose III for instance is reported to have returned from a campaign in Canaan with almost 90,000 prisoners. Given the small size of armies – generally thousands rather than tens of thousands of soldiers – most of these prisoners must have been civilians.
The Egyptians may have preferred to make slaves of the able bodied soldiers of defeated enemy armies than of the inhabitants of captured cities, the majority of whom were children and women. During antiquity there was a preponderance of male slaves, who were often more valued than the females for the hard labour they could perform. But the most cherished – and expensive – were generally those who had special or rare skills.
Compared with the vast empires of the Persians, Macedonians or Romans the Egyptian conquests in Africa and the Middle East were not very extensive. The subjugated populations were correspondingly small. Once these territories were 'pacified', the number of prisoners of war that could be enslaved was limited.
The temples, above all those of Amen, enjoyed unprecedented prosperity during the New Kingdom. Except during the Amarna episode, they were generously endowed with land and people to work it. They must have owned hundreds of thousands of slaves.
John Madden of the University College of Galway thinks that in Roman times perhaps 10% of the Egyptian population was enslaved, with their density varying greatly throughout the country [29], as opposed to the Roman heartland where about every third inhabitant was a slave [4].

If the slaves were near the bottom of Egyptian society, their lot was rarely as bad as that of slaves in other societies. As servants in a temple or in the household of a rich family it was often better than that of the "free" peasants, the serf-like meret [7] and the sejdemash [8] called up for the unloved corvée [11].
Treating a slave well was a moral precept, but the very fact that decent treatment of slaves was a moral duty means that they must have been treated badly quite often. In the Book of the Dead two of the dead person's virtues recited in order to join the company of the gods among others like not having inflicted pain or not having committed murder are
I have not domineered over slaves.
I have not vilified a slave to his master.

For many years, it was presumed that inancient Egypt, the GreatPyramids atGiza were built by many thousands of foreign slaves, toiling under very harsh conditions over a period of decades. Today, many scholars refute this picture of ancient Egypt, believing instead that they were built by the free Egyptians themselves, some perhaps as seasonal conscripts with other artisans consigned permanently to the projects. One must also consider just how the Egyptians would really control so many slaves in one location with the rudimentary weapons of theOld Kingdom.

Tony, there are a great many (black) African slaves throughout African nations today. Are they "terrible victims" or the "idiots" you propose for being lured into the promise of a job and some kind of life? Does working in present-day gold mine soils laced with cyanide compare with working on a plantation? Does being x-rayed repeatedly when they exit the diamond mine each day compare with being whipped when insolent?

Slavery in the USA back in 1700-1863 wasn't the end-all-be-all of bad times for humanity and while we shouldn't forget those lessons, we should all also move on and utilize all opportunities today. I, personally, hold no pity for any kids of any background today who choose to blow off school and refuse opportunities. Such kids grow into adults who later blame society for why they haven't succeeded. Public school is free and while some kids have more obstacles than others to work hard and learn and achieve, ultimately, the choice to pursue and reach and grow lies with each of us. Stop looking backward and start moving forward. We are only slaves to our own lack of vision and lack of discipline. Start making better decisions.

"Today’s slave is shackled by insurmountable debt, coercion, fear and intimidation"

That sounds exactly like what most single fathers I know have been subjected to. The have had their children kidnapped by their (often abusive) ex wives, have all their assets stripped from them, and are forced to pay that very same person. Their ex wives, however, do not have to work if they do not want to. All of choice and freedom is removed from the father and his role as a cash cow defined and enforced by the state. The ex wife, however, is free do do whatever she wishes.

    How is that not slavery?

How do you figure? All freedom of choice is removed from one parent and that one parent is forced into labor under thereat of incarceration. The second parent is not forced into labor and thus has no threat of incarceration. The government forces one parent to pay the other, effectively turning one parent into property, a slave.

The government is not enforcing equality and equal responsibility for both parents. It is taking one (typically the male) and defining their entire existence for them. The profits are given to the other parent.

Ur thinking indentured servitude. Slavery; condition of being enslaved laborer: the state or condition of being held in involuntary servitude as the property of somebody else. You are not owned by your ex wife and you are being held in responsibility for the laws of the country that you are appart of. When you decided that you wanted to conceive a child you also undertook the responsibilites of being a father, your choice wasnt removed, you made the choice to be a father, you should although become educated on what being a father means in america and what their resposibilites are as enforced by the government. Also your not a slave, if you dont like it here, leave, we wont chase you.

One parent is forced into a specific role where they are forced to make money and hand it over to the other parent, under thereat of incarceration. It took two people to create that child, not just one. Yet one parent is forced into labor and the other is not. Was it just the father who took on responsibility, or the father AND the mother?

Slavery will never end, and the Federal Government, today Mr. Obama, is the largest owner of slaves, every time that someone applies for Welfare, Food Stamp, or uses the "Obamacare" they are selling themselves as a slave, a willing slave that prefers to be a slave and not go out and be free from slavery by going out and taking any job offered and if two jobs are needed then be it.

End slavery will never happen so long as there are slavery programs that are sponsored by the Federal Government and disguised as safety nets.

Being paid by the Federal Government and not doing anything to earn your money is by accounts slavery. Not as hard core as it was back in the days where the slaves were paid in the form of shelter, sometimes not good shelter, and they were provided food. Does that not sound like what the government is doing to own all those on Welfare and Food Stamps. You might look at the black and white, but welfare and food stamps fall into the gray area.

        January 11, 2013 at 12:32 pm |

Tim. Government dependency is not slavery in the ugliest sense of the word. Slaves could pick and leave in the Old South. No doubt. They'd just have to risk death and torture! Government dependents can pick up and leave the plantation as well. Though they don't risk murder and torture, they risk starvation and disease in a very real sense if the plantation provides them with no marketable skills. So it behooves them to do what the plantation owners want; give the owners votes and power.

Think it through Tim. We have babies making babies, cities with high dropout rates with the graduates just being passed through lacking the ability to even read. Children on street corners selling drugs. Generations of healthy people who could be productive but know nothing except living off government largesse.

These people aren't the stereotypical slaves. But can you call them free?

"This shamefully evil chapter still cannot be fully explained, because no facts can possibly answer how humanity allowed it to happen, and why we didn’t stop it sooner."

    Oh, please...

Slavery has existed for at least as far back in human history as written records go–five thousand or so years–and likely back to when human verbal communication consisted of nuanced grunting. After five thousand-plus years, there's little reason to start panicking about it now.

The origins of slavery are, of course, obscure, but the most likely scenario is that it was a merciful alternative to simply killing the soldiers of defeated armies and allowing the families of those dead soldiers-farmers to starve to death. You really can't apply modern sensibilities to the state of affairs of a few thousand years ago, or even a few hundred years ago.

Nice try Henry. Pull the blanket over your eyes so that you cannot see – or bury your head and soul into the sand so that the issue can't be appreciated.

Slavery is real. It's in America. I know. I've worked with people who are trying to help. Someone I knew once died because of it. I know people today who have been disfigured, who are struggling to escape it's clutches.

      It's real dammit.

You seem to still have something of a conscience sir, even though you're trying very hard to put it to sleep. Denial may be a river in Egypt, but it doesn't wash here.

Read the article again. Try to think about it, if there's any compassion left in your heart.

and then, maybe, the unthinkable may happen. You might actually do something about it.

This article is just a load of bullocks, the emancipation proclamation didnt free all slaves – it only freed slaves in the southern states. Using Lincoln as a rallying cry for the president and democrats is an evil thing to do, Lincoln was a tyrant that suppressed freedom of speech,. jailed journalists critical of his war plans and disguised war legislation as emancipation. Let us pray that Obama is not another Lincoln, I dont think the country can afford another civil war!

Or perhaps modern slavery could also be defined in a financial system which is geared towards keeping the population in debt for the duration of their lives and after (you know, like the mafia only legal).

This is not about being a slave to one's employer for more than 40 hours a week. This is about physical abuse and effort for which there is NO pay. This is about restriction of movement and denial of hope. This is about imprisonment and torture.

      This is about human bondage.

THIS SUBJECT ISN'T ABOUT financial indebtedness and the problems it causes.

IT'S about human bondage, brutality and the denial of any hope at all of anything coming close to freedom. It's about fear and being literally owned by another person. It's about being branded by your owner so that even in escape you'll be found and returned to slavery.

WAKE up people!!!! This isn't about an academic discussion about partisan politics. It's about human slavery of the most base and disgusting kind.

WHY IS STUPIDITY TREATED LIKE A VIRTUE THSESE DAYS? Slavery isn't a joke. It isn't something 'out there'. It is real and it's in America. Wake up.

My wife and I have been involved in local safe house ministries. These services assist escaped slaves by providing safe houses, medical treatment and in some cases plastic surgery to correct the branding, tattoos and physical deformities that have been performed on people in order to identify them to their 'owners'.

Yes, some tattoos are used to identify slaves. Its easier and safer since Americans consider tattoos to be relatively innocent body art. It isn't. Not always anyway.

Nobody wants to think about this issue, but there is slave trading in every large city and many medium sized communities as well.

It is a sin before God, an immoral trade in peddling flesh and wickedness of the meanest sort – yet Mr. Obama is doing nothing absolutely nothing about it.

There is nothing sinful about slavery, none of the ten commandments say anything about slaves, Abhraham the father of all Abhrahamic religions, had slaves, both of his wives had slaves, he bore children with his wives slaves. It is evident in the bible that god sees a relevance to slavery, he does also see and teach that there is a proper way to treat slaves and that abusing and misuseing a slave is a crime agaisnt god. Slavery is just an idea, its how you do it that makes the difference.

Your "gawd" and all flavors of religion are often the root justification used to enslave people. That one religio is superior to another or one race is superior to all others. Let's get rid of religion at all levels and operate as true human beings. That will be a start in the right direction.

What illiterate inconsiderate bigotted rubbish you write.

Slavery is an economic issue. Always has been. It is today. It has nothing whatsoever to do with religion.
Except you of course. I suspect that you are something of a mental slave to your hatred of all things sacred.

Liberty is sacred. Life is sacred. Hope is sacred. Freedom from fear and imprisonment is sacred.
I'm writing about people who have lost all that through no fault of their own.

You in your religious bigotry – are you so far from compassion for your human brothers and sisters that you cannot for one moment peer through that cloud of hate for all things sacred and consider that people, real people are suffering?

It isn't a joke and it isn't an excuse for petty personal blindness and bigotry. It show what a low person you really are.

i used evidence in my argument and you just used mean words to ambiguously describe me, congrats. I have plenty of human compassion, I have no desire to see anyone suffer needlessly and am empathetic towards sufferers. People take this narrow one sided view of how they think ALL SLAVE TRADERS in this world steal children and others from families and force them into servitude and horribly abuse them. Yes, that is wrong, we should stop those people who do that. But there is another side to slavery that is respectfull of the concept and what it has the potentional to do. Consider it advanced parenting, you are purchasing someone because they would not benefit your society were they to be free. We have plenty of opprotunites to do this effectivly and yet we dont. See next post.

Think of adopting a 12 year old child as a slave. Isnt it slavery? Slavery doesnt have to mean forcing someone to undergo excessive physical abuse, tortue, and labor them to death. they simply have to work for you without pay for as long as you say they do. You provide the child with a roof to live under, food, water, things to wear, you protect them from outside danger, in return they take out the trash, mow the lawn, clean the house, prepare food for the family. Many slaves enjoyed this "similar" kind of life. Like in Rome. Or in northern america during the time of slavery. Slavery is all about how you do it. The homeless enjoy free soup, can sleep in homeless shelter, can receive clothing, and all they have to do is claim homelessness. They dont have to have a job, or contribute to society in any way. In my opinion, we should enslave the homeless, they are just an endless money sink that serve no purpose but to take up free products provided for by the government. FORCE THEM TO WORK. You dont have to pay them. they are getting paid for already in non monetary assets. Plus they can gain the skills needed to be able to make something of themselves down the road. Now dont treat them like animals, but there is no reason not to "correct" them if they step out of line. American citizens enjoy freedom cuz they work to provide it. Homeless people dont. Enslave them.

People who think we are slaves to dollar need to take the blinders off. You know what you spend your dollars on? Food, water, clothings, shelter. You know what i found out in my yard today? Deer. Deer are walking food supplies. You know what runs through streams in rivers these days? (lol well mostly anyways) WATER! You know that you can cut the skin off an animal and use it as clothing? Yes, yes you can! Did you know you can use the large skins of animals to create a shelter to live in ? YES YES YOU CAN! And you know what the government says? YOU CAN DO THAT!!! Its perfectly fine!! But if your either too lazy to put any survival skills in practice or into use, or if you already have skills for which someone will pay you for then you are also free to do that. The government provides you will the ability to easy trade goods with a value system called MONEY!!! THAT IT PRINTS!!! USING PAPER IT BUYS!!! So if it asks that you pay it in part for the availability of this service IT PROVIDES!! IT WOULD BE AWESOME IF YOU COULD DO SO!!! If not then FINE, Kill your own fking meat, collect your own fking water, and build your own fking house.

You can’t be serious. Where and how are you coming up with these numbers please and thank you? How can we come the thinking that after creating record numbers of unemployed (by purposely giving as much as possible to the rich) the problem with this country is the unemployed themselves? So let me get this right, the president cannot raise the debt ceiling or get a budget to pay our bills and the reason is the bills are too high because of the unemployed. Ok so wouldn’t a solution to all of these unemployed people be creating jobs so they can then begin paying taxes? But no, the solution that is being demanded as if it is the only solution in the world is to cut the amount of money going to the people who need it and spend every cent (taking more money out an already weak economy). Hilarious, I am trying to see the republican point of view but how does this make sense. I have been trying to make an excuse for the republicans not passing a budget. How could you not pass a budget when it is you job to negotiate for the greater good of America? How could you not pass a budget when through negotiations you acquire 98% of what you want but still don’t pass a budget? How is Americans not outraged by these actions especially if you are republican and like their policies how can 98% of these policies not be good enough for America? The false claim and untruth reason why you do this is because the president who has no legal ability to spend anything is actually spending too much, Hilarious? So you can turn down a deal where the president compromised with you and gave you 98% of what you wanted but 98% is not good enough for you, you want 100% of what you want or you will do everything you can to bring down the country (and this is ok under the hysterical claim that history will not remember all of the player in this game only the president). So what is the reason why you see it necessary to intentionally negatively impact our country in an attempt to make someone else look bad (how is this not treason)? You decided not to pass a budget which it’s self-increased our debt. It is ok for over 100 thousand people to continue losing their jobs each month because the government can’t pay its contracts. Then employers can pay their employees and have to fire them but this is perfectly fine. You can lower our credit rating making us pay more for the debt we already have and this is perfectly fine (you adding to our debt but you claim your actions are so the President can’t add to the debt). We need to make sure the President does not spend money on our economy for the cause he might actually improve things (further proving the bad policies installed need to be thrown out). We cannot let him do anything at all we must combat each and every idea, statement and actions to make it as hard a possible on him to taint his record so history will see him as a bad president. How many times did our last president raise the debt ceiling? How many times has this president raised the debt ceiling? Literally overnight your ideas and policy went from a budget does not matter to we can’t pass a budget and our countries well-being depends on it now all of a sudden. Someone tell me how is this logical. This is a serious question and I for the love of me I cannot find a reason for this behavior. This is embarrassing and illogical. As an American how we are not outraged? Regardless of views and opinions you job is to work together (combining your views for the greater good of our country) not to combat everything the president does or says by being willing to bring down the country if you don’t get 100% your way? I am white and ashamed that America is not ready for a black president. It blatantly obvious America would rather implode then to have a black President help us out or fix our problems. Some of my family members are upset about our republicans and their actions. Some of my family members are still blindly supporting everything republican for the cause the think they are being patriotic and they have to do so in order to stay true to their confederate heritage. Disappointing how racist the republican talking points and statements to argue policy and state their opinion are. I cannot talk to my family or another republican without them being racist or straight up lying. Am I the only one that thinks this is ridiculous and embarrassing to every American? Look at all of the racist statements made by republican supporters on this page proving the problem is with color and not policy or a deficit.

I couldn't get past the first sentence. The Emancipation Proclamation freed the slaves ONLY in the succeeded states (except Tennessee because the Union armies controlled Tenn. and they didn’t want the citizens to revolt and cause problems). It was still legal to own slaves in the Union states of Maryland, Kentucky and West Virginia. Slavery is certainly a problem in the world today – but if you want to be taken seriously please get your facts straight.

move, move, move. You don't judge rights on the need for them today. You preserve them to ensure the rights for future generations. Do we face an overly oppressive government today that we should take up arms against? Oh no, of course not. Can you, however, ensure that those rights will not be needed 50 or 100 years from now? Of course not.

As for the "good shot" theory. Really? It isn't that easy. You go for the body shot if you are smart because it presents the largest target. Well, the thief/rapist is high on drugs or adrenaline so the first shot doesn't bring him down. You need the second, or more, bullet. And what if you have missed?

As our global population increases the % of people suffering will also increase, this is a statistical fact. The entire point of this country is to be the last beacon to go out, cause don't get sh1t twisted if a meteor or nukes don't take us out it will eventually be lack of resources due to population and its the duty of our leaders to ensure the survival of our country at all costs including the expense of the rest of the world.......wasting resources and time on something as stupid as world suffering and slavery does nothing but increase the rate at which our quality of life is sustainable in this country.

I'm sorry but MOST people with an obscene amount of debt that are forced to pay it off aren't slaves.
In fact....I think our society is moving to the direction where if you borrow a large sum of someone else's money and then can't afford to pay it will be forced to in one way or another to pay it back. Debt collection is a necessary part in a very full circle natural process called financial balance.

This briefs well, but the president won't act. And do you want to know why? The biggest perpetrators against these crimes are the Islamists. If the president were to act, he would be labeled an Islamophobe by the likes of CAIR and the rest of the terrorist sympathizing dirt bags. And we all know that this president won't get tough against the Islamist threat.

We spend more money giving it to people who loaf around and just ask for more when the free ride dries up. This is what our country is becomming.

THAT, is the problem with your country. A.) he's full of crap, those wars costed you guys EVERYTHING! because they were not funded. and if you could still fight four more wars (and come out with a full infrastructure) then the issue of the war funding wouldnt be a issue.... but it is.
and B.) Why would anyone bring up fighting 4 more wars anyways? like what is wrong with you guys? You pride youself on having the biggest military of all time and then spit on those without education or support. you pay low taxes, but DONT want to pay more to advance your country? and then, because my countries social policies are at such odds with your's you guys think were like Soviet Russia. nuts. just nuts. it only ticks me off because you guys are our biggest trading partner, now that the masses have been fooled and your pillars are crumbling, my country is feeling it. 65. Irony of Presidents Obama and Lincoln

The irony is the comparison of President Obama to Lincoln.

The Slavery issue was addressed by President Lincoln.
President Obama is coming closer to re-igniting the conflict over one portion of the premise for the Civil War; Federalism. In effect his effort to establish servitude to the Federal Government by stripping States and Individuals of what is left of sovereign rights and liberties.

    President Lincoln freed us all.
President Obama is on the path to bind us all; a servitude to a Federal Oligarchy.

Even if Obama was stripping the rights and liberties of america, that means that there are two other groups of people who are OKing it too. The house and the senate. A majority of those members were there before Obama was even on the ballet. Also the government requires no such servitude. If you want to live your life in america without the hand of the government in your pocket, dont put United States Federal Currency in your pockets. Any abled body in the country has the freedom to hunt for food, drink from natural water supplies, create a shelter for yourself or your family and if you do all these things yourself you dont have to spend a dime. Freedom!

You're president, George W. Bush murdered my fellow country men on 9/11. He is not allowed back in Canada. I have no quarrels with Barack H. Obama. I've seen him do nothing of the sort like Bush did. My only gripe with Obama, is that he hasn't fully pulled your military out of Iraq and appologize with humility on behalf of America. Maybe then the West can come out with some dignity.

Yes, Bush had his issues, obviously. But Obama is a warmonger, just the same. The only difference, is that Bush went before Congress, and Congress approved the wars. Obama never went before Congress before Libya. Never went before Congress for supplying arms to Syrian rebels. Not to mention, we're still in Afghanistan full force. The truth is, the majority of American's want out of all these wars and conflicts. We're sick of being the world police.

His heavily increased use of Drones (which though many think is a warmongerer tactic) is actually meant to combat Friendly casualties. his "lack of aggression on Iran and HAMAS, and his choice of Hagel seems quite the oppisite of a Warmongerer of America that I'm used too. however. I could partially agree, only because the thick fog of your government clouds what's actually going on behind the scenes. all I can say, is any nation that spends as much as you guys do on military is definately up to something.

Seriously? Don't we have more important issues that need to be addressed in this country? Once again, CNN, "the network for all minorities", comes up with another bleeding-heart liberal article, dragging up an issue that was resolved by Lincoln 150 years ago. Lincoln believed in independence and democracy. Obama believes in more and more government, making everyone dependent on the government for handouts, and using executive orders to rule as though he was the sole dictator in this country. What a pathetic excuse for a leader. He doesn't know how to lead.

    January 11, 2013 at 1:32 pm | Reply
    • Ryan Dabest

I know how to lead and so does Obama. He was elected president. If you want to lead in a democracy, you ask others in a democracy if they want you to be their leader, Obama asked, and most people said yes, Obama you can be our leader. Once it was decided that he would be the leader, they made him the leader. If the majority of people are behind and backing obama then he must be in the front of those people, aka "lead"ing them. More people backed obama than any other leader and so statistically it is more customary of americans to follow obama than to not follow him. Literal statistics.

How can I go on reading something that starts off with incorrect data? I really get tired of this rewrite of history, including the new "Lincoln" pic that is out. The Emancipation Proclamation in no way whatsoever declared "all slaves free" – it freed slaves in Confederate states, not in Union states. It is skewed facts like this that cause people to "conjure up horrifying images and stomach-churning thoughts about the most disgraceful days in U.S. history". It saddens me to constantly see this barrage of "Civil War = Slavery" and the "Lincoln = Great emancipator". It's rubbish.

I've spent the past decade in China and watching the same rewrite of history to vilify their foes during their civil war, and raise their leaders to unimaginable heights, churns my stomach just as much as it does when I see it back home.

The Civil War was about states rights, plain and simple. Slavery was brought in to politicize it, and those who did politicize it, used the war to their advantage to get their platform pushed through congress. I am in no way JUSTIFYING slavery, but let's not whitewash the facts.

Throughout the Civil War, and after it ended, slavery existed in Union states. The passage of the 13th Amendment, even WITHOUT southern states being represented in Congress, barely made the vote – even with outright buying of votes.

If anything, it had more to do with the push of the National Banking Act, which the Confederacy felt would devalue the wealth of the south at the time.

The Christian bible had no problem with slavery, Old Testament or New Testament. Slavery was common, but it was a lawful business activity for every culture in the world, until very recently. Generational slavery was also common, but that is what the US and Europe focused on as part of their best business practices in the 19th century. Make no mistake, the Chinese immigrant labor force that built our railway system was also slavery. Minimum wage workers are serving as slaves in that they have nothing to show for their labor beyond survival. But hey, God's cool with that, and God's OK with a man having as many wives as he can support, so...what are you going to do, create a morality structure that excludes some of the things God was fine and dandy with?

    January 11, 2013 at 2:05 pm | Reply
    • Dynamic

If you go down that path, then you can't have it both ways: If God is against slavery and one man can only be married to one wife, then I say God is pro-abortion and pro-gay marriage.

The truth is that humanity's sense of morality is constantly changing and the things we take for granted as being "socially questionable" will become outrageous or completely acceptable to our descendents. And their legal system will reflect their evolving morality. I suppose they'll cringe at our idea of "minimum wage" and that there was even anyone opposed to a "national health care system"...

In the Bible the early jewish people are slaves to the egyptians and Moses frees them, there is no where in the Bible that embraces someone today to enslave someone. And before you say all whites enslaved blacks and they are racist. The early puritans were the ones who considered themselves as pure. So all of the immigrants in the last 150 years weren't even slave owners. The Irish, german, and italian weren't even considered as whites for a long time. Man there were Irish slaves, so whats the whole point of whites and blacks

If your waiting for Obama to "take action" on something, like anything, you'll be waiting a long time. Obama just mouths vapid, pretty and inoffensive but condescending lines, essentially fiddling while Rome burns. He is incapable of taking a stand on anything. If he had to he couldn't even hammer a nail into the wall to hang his hat on. He'd have to call Joe Biden or Nancy Pelosi to do it for him. He wouldn't want to be responsible for putting a small hole in the wall, when he could just later blame it on Congress and still get a Nobel prize for hat hanging in the process having done absolutely nothing. Nice job if you can get it. As long as his gullible, adoring, unquestioning, and fawning audience, the media, lasts

A lot more people must check this out and understand this side of the story. I was surprised you aren't more popular because you most certainly possess the gift.

I’m impressed, I must say. Seldom do I encounter a blog that’s equally educative and amusing, and let me tell you, you have hit the nail on the head. The problem is something that not enough people are speaking intelligently about. I am very happy that I came across this in my search for something relating to this.
