Christians are so hypocritical. They are fighting to end slavery when it is so supported by the bible supported by Paul and Jesus. These Christians obviously dont know what their bible is about, start by reading your bibles and educating your selves about the history of slavery and how it was propagated. Its like foxes fighting for chicken rights.

Obviously Wilmark does not know much about Jesus nor Paul. The Christian message intention was not a revolution against a social system, but rather an eternal salvation message that a man have an option to accept or refuse. More importantly, although the gospel takes no stand on any social system (caste system included), it insists that all men are equals before God and prompt all Christians (master and slaves) to act accordingly.
On the other hand, historical facts do not support your misleading statements. History confirms that Christianity was first more dominant among "lower" class people, slaves included, than "Nobles". In fact, Paul's letters indicate that many early Christian fathers and church leaders were "slaves".

If it insists all men are equal why does it say slavery is okay in so many places? Why do CSA and neo Confederate people use the bible to defend their postions?

Typical and predictable. Wilmark, I hope you are able to appreciate a revolution of admittedly flawed Christ-followers who also recognize false representations of Christianity in the name of personal interest and gain. And no, not what the Bible is about. Lean in with a sincerely seeking heart and He will come near.

Any verse in the Bible can and has been twisted by those who want to use it to their own advantage. It is true that people in this country used the Bible to justify slavey but that doesn't make them right. Our past changes who we are but it does not define who we are. Jesus says in Luke 4:18 "The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has annointed Me to preach good news to the poor.He has sent Me to proclaim freedom for the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed". I was one of the students standing that night and I am In It To End It. This is not just a " Christian thing". It is a major social issue and whether you believe in Jesus or not I hope you will join us in setting the 27 million free.

Wow, I'm so glad to find 65,000 amazing people ready to make a change in the world. I went to Passion also and it was a life changer. God created us all to be free and we are all equals in his sight, Jew or Gentile. We are called to serve others, just as Jesus served when He was on earth. We are called to free the oppressed, and that is what we are trying to do. I am sorry to say the so called Christians that the media reports on is how the rest of America sees us. I think those "Christians" that you see have misinterpreted what the Bible says in some spots unfortunately IMO. We are trying to give a voice to the 27 million slaves around the world, and we are trying to shed light on slavery and human trafficking. Whether you are a Christian or not, please do anything you can to help those that are not free. Go to enditmovement.com and pledge to make a change in the world, and let people know that there are more slaves today than other time in history. God bless everyone on here.

The slavery referred to in the the Bible was COMPLETELY different from the issue these students are fighting against. The slavery that the Bible is referring to took place willingly by the slaves. If someone could not pay a debt they would willingly sell themselves (temporarily) as slaves to their debtors until they had fulfilled repayment for the debt. And there were guidelines and rules for how these slaves would be handled and treated. Why? Because they were humans with rights.

The 27 million today are trapped against their will and are treated inhumanely without rights. Completely different.

This post is complete utter nonsense. How dare you try and say that the slavery the bible refers to was somewhat more passive and excusable than the slavery that exist today because your fake god condoned it. Slavery has always existed and it is terrible part of our human history and it certainly existed in its most horrid forms 2000 years ago in that illiterate part of the world where your god allegedly hails from.

        January 10, 2013 at 2:42 am |
    • davidosage

I completely agree. The old testament is a vile book if taken as truth as it displays a merciless god bent on killing, pillaging enslaving, and raping. Most of these apologetics wont admit to this because as terrible a slavery is, they are mental slaves themselves.

You are so misinformed. If you read the Bible yourself, you would see how slavery is spoken of. You would see how anyone who is a slave was always told to serve as if they were serving the Lord because no one can be won over by someone they are having to fight against. You would also see that it never condoned slavery.

Media should stop giving coverage on Religions and there will be no conflicts in the world. Also, there are fanatics in each religion. Christians and Islamists are fighting all over the world to dominate the world by brainwashing, bribing, misguiding to convert non Christians & non Muslims to their faith which is a same. All religion should be respected and people should have right to chose one.

IF DOES, HE WOULD NOT ONLY BRING THE PEOPLE BACK TO EARTH WHO FOLLOWS CHRISTIANITY, HE WILL HAVE TO BRING BACK ALL MUSLIMS, NON CHRISTIANS & MOST IMPORTANTLY ALL CRIMINALS SINCE HE CANNOT DISCRIMINATE ANY BASED ON THEIR FAITH, CRIMES ETC.

It does NOT say slavery is okay in any places. People are flawed, and imperfect. That is why some twist the bible and make it support whatever it is they want it to support. We are not perfect.

Why would these college students be giving up time in their winter break to gather from around the globe....if their BIBLE was in support of the very thing they are sacrificing their time and their money against??? Please have some decency to respect and honor these students who are believing that they can play a part & change such a horrifically flawed world. We should all have the hope that college students have, I'm embarrassed that there are people who are going to just throw their religious nonsensical blame, when what we SHOULD be doing instead is putting forth effort to halt this global injustice.

Yes, it does. You can even beat your slave to death with no punishment provided he or she lives a couple of days since the slave is your property.

Christians had no obligation to free their slaves and christian slaves had an obligation to not run away. Jews could buy and sell their neighbors as long as their neighbors weren't Jews and could keep their slaves' wives and children even if they freed the adult slave.

Slavery and the bible marched hand in hand for two millennia. Devout Christians were among the most active people on the pro-slavery side in the U.S. prior to the Civil War with one of their prime arguments being that slavery was a good thing since those slaves were all "pagans" and being owned by Christians could only improve their lot and lead them to "salvation" and neither Jesus nor Paul spoke ill of it in any form.

I was at passion this year. I am in that crowd, that last conference day holding a candle as the news copter passed 3 times over us and the beacon of light went up. My church bus just got back to Virginia and I just got home to check the media attention on it. It was spiritually amazing as well as eye opening to slavery. They hit the nail dead on. I have never seen a group of young people so passionate about a cause. I hope the world can have the blinds taken off of its eyes about this issue. It is very real. Millions upon millions of human beings are enslaved all across the world. We need to spread awareness and fight this evil to human kind, Christian or not.

however, modern slavery has a tendency to consist of MEN enslaving WOMEN. Christianity needs to recognize women as fully equal to men as an antidote to this crap. fact: Catholicism and several other Chrisian sects do not recognize females as fit for the priesthood. To my way of,defining equality, that is not it. if that bothers anyone, feel free to comment.

Didn't the bible encourage multiple wives. Didn't Joshua murder a number of people when he took property in the so called promise land. That said, if your believe in God inspires you to do good including fighting slavery, then all the love, respect and admiration to you. I wish the world would be filled with those sort of inspiration as opposed to the vitrolic and bigotry I see post elsewhere. To end on a sour note: Religion does inspire bigotry. All the best

If one looks at Abolistionist movement during the mid 19th Century which was created Quaker and Christian fundamentalist wanted to end slavery in America period.
Yes a Catholic bishop wanted to bring slaves or endentured workers from West Africa (Bigger, Stronger) to work the fields of the New World because the Natives Americans were dropping dead like flys. After realization of what he created pled the Vatican to stop or condemn the brutality used on this workforce.
In the Bible it takes Slavery into a limited (7yrs) of endentured servitude and the servants/ slaves are owed vasts amounts of money for their servitude.
If Paul would of said eliminate Slavery of endentured servitude entirely, they would have Sparticus / Hannibal type uprisings across the known world.
Besides the early church were full of the poor, social outcasts, ex-slaves, orphans, widows, and non-aristocratic civility.
Before the Taiping Rebelion (A misled Christian Cult) Chinese men were allowed to chain there wives and daughters to the house. Chinese Christians greatly opposed and reformed this back then, sadly along with 20million citizens that were slaughtered.

Slavery is in the bible. If you understood the bible you would know that it meant something totally different 2K years ago. You'd think taking about Oceans as a calming and peaceful thing, but up until 500 years ago is was used to express something bas, it was used in one way as turbulent, confusion, so before you give you thoughts on something, you have to understand, the language and what it meant to them in ancient times.

That's along the lines of what I said earlier. Slavery not being a part of Christianity it is mentioned with a way of dealing with it. But that is even off topic. I think the current slave problem is something that is only protected by those involved. My take being from a military mindset and background it has a different process. I've heard of attacks in Africa that would change your mind about humanity forever. In America and never seeing life outside of it, you couldn't imagine how far evil goes.

Ladies and Gentlemen, good day to you all.
It is fairly obvious by reading through these posts that there are a few of common threads:
    1. People are willing to use something inherently good to sate a thirst to "hate on" something they do not like, understand, etc.
    2. People will easily be able to get off topic and thus be unable to defeat something we all obviously hate because we must all be "right" about something else that is basically not the target of this article.
    3. Due to the last thing mentioned above, the people who should be our enemies are probably laughing hysterically at us right now.
    4. Most everyone here is most likely a decent person and would NEVER say some of these things to another face-to-face, except that the internet makes us "anonymous" cowards.

Thanks for reading and have a good day. I trust it'll be much better than someone who has been forced into some kind of slavery, if you stopped to think about that before posting. Please feel free to reply and bash on me as I will not be reading this thread any further anyway. I'm getting away from my computer to see if there is something I can to do fix the problem at hand.

That is true, I think your on to something. People who are unwilling to accomplish anything for the right reason hide behind whatever piece of information they can with emphasis on religion or political view. Good example is our current Senate or Congress. Thats the perfect example of hiding behind a personal position or view to accomplish nothing. And I used that as an example only. I use to supervise Community Service workers, most of them and in some cases all of them would come up with reasons why they couldn't complete a task. Or make a group effort to accomplish what would be a simple task if everyone pitched in. I'm sure most everyone on here is familiar with that type of person. And with all the forms of communications we now have, they argue the most when hiding behind a profile name, or call sign, mediator or Job Position. And that's at all levels of management. With that said. I see the Christians that are doing this as great examples of humanity at it's best. Not discounting other faiths or social groups, But I would assume that most people that are willing to be a part 0f an an organized group generally are trying to accomplish something. Or making a effort for change in something. But no matter the group or organization, when they all focus on one task, anything is possible. I would also assume that these "One Liner Hate Statements" are coming from the sort of people who have have no desire or passion to be a part of anything. So one thing I would consider to root out decent ion is someone with no affiliation and work my way down from there. All in all, It's great to hear of young people who made a conscious decision to join the Church and pick up the Flag and stand strong with their fellow brothers and sisters of the human race and do something that requires personal commitment and longevity. It's also nice to see that no matter what group your affiliated with, you see the same thing. A chance to make the difference in thousands of lives for the right reasons.

For those of you who say that the Bible supports slavery, I will point out a few things:

The easiest way to look up the Old Testament laws on slavery is to Google the phrase, "Remember that you were slaves in Egypt." All of the slavery laws in the Old Testament had to do with treating your slaves well–freeing them in the 7th year (and showering them generously with gifts at that time), not beating them to the point of death as was common among other cultures, etc. Just because God allowed something in the Old Testament does not mean that He condoned it (see the law on divorce, which Jesus said was only allowed "because of the hardness of your hearts").

Likewise, in the New Testament, slavery is not forbidden, but Colossians 4:1 warns masters, "Treat their slaves justly, because you also have a Master in heaven." In other words, you'd better treat your slaves the way you want God to treat you! If you beat them, God just might take vengeance on their behalf.

1 Timothy 1:10 includes "slave-traders" in a list of sinners. Apparently it was OK to have slaves in the tradition of indentured servitude, but not to buy and sell them.

My conclusion is that the American Christians who used the Bible to support the practice of slavery were being hypocrites: They claimed that the Old Testament Law applied to them (in violation of Acts 15:28-29) when it allowed slavery, but did not obey their end of the deal according to the same law:

-They did not set their slaves free after seven years (or on a Year of Jubilee happening every 50 years)
-They did not charge slaveholders with any crime if the slave died of a beating
-They did not treat the slaves the way they would want God to treat them
-They traded in slaves, buying and selling them

And don't forget that they ate shellfish and did a bunch of other non-slavery-related things not permitted to the ancient Israelites!

If you're going to claim that a certain legal code applies to you, you have to accept that the whole thing does. Why did they support their positions as slaveholders from the Old Testament Law (which, again, didn't apply to them–see Acts 15:28-29), while ignoring the parts of the same law that would have limited them? Why did their preachers allow them to do this?

One more thing. In my opinion that there are quite a few travel insurance web sites of reliable companies that let you enter holiday details and find you the quotations. You can also purchase the actual international travel insurance policy on the internet by using your credit card. All you need to do is usually to enter the travel particulars and you can understand the plans side-by-side. You only need to find the system that suits your capacity to pay and needs and then use your bank credit card to buy them. Travel insurance online is a good way to do investigation for a trustworthy company pertaining to international travel cover. Thanks for giving your ideas.

I have a wordpress blog now, but I can't figure out how to get readers into there! I have been using myspace and it's been great, subscriptions like crazy, but a lot of them don't have wordpress...so no leads there. Besides, I am posting the same info to both, so it's not much of a point of them getting one. How can I increase my wordpress readership? I already utilize tags, but I still only got about 89 views in two weeks. . . . Thanks in advance–serious answers only, please!.
