Teen's brothel escape triggers Mexico clampdown

By Rafael Romo, CNN - They were only 14 years old, cousins from a small town in central Mexico, when a fun trip to the local fair turned into a nightmare of drugs and forced prostitution.

As Maria and Lupe - CNN has changed their names to protect their identities - were waiting by the highway for their early evening bus home,  they say a semi-tractor trailer stopped right in front of them and two men got out.

There were no conversations. It all happened very quickly, the cousins say. "They were two men who were wearing black masks like hoodies. We couldn't see their faces," Maria said.

Lupe says she didn't even have time to react. "I only felt that they put something on my nose and that's all I remember. The last thing I remember is yelling for help," Lupe said.

Drugged and drifting in and out of consciousness, they lost track of time. They only know they woke up in a dark room where they were kept for several days. There was no food or water and the cousins were cold. But it was only the start of their ordeal.

Several days later, Maria says, a woman showed up. She let them both know that, from now on, they were going to "work for her," the cousins said. At that moment they had no idea what the stranger was talking about.

Lupe was taken out of the room and Maria was left alone with the woman. A man then entered the room and started beating her savagely. She says he raped her; and then both the man and the woman threatened her life and told her to cooperate.

That night Maria says she was forced to have sex with 23 men. "When they left, I stayed there, lying on the floor, bleeding. My entire body ached. The woman told me to get up, that it hadn't been that bad," Maria said.

It was the beginning of several months the cousins describe as torture. They were sold to a pimp who forced them to have sex with multiple men every night. Their hair was dyed. They were forced to wear skimpy outfits. They would get beaten up if they weren't "friendly" with clients.

Meanwhile, in their hometown, their families were desperately looking for them. At first, they thought the girls had got lost and searched around the town. Then they started looking in wooded areas around the town, afraid they might have been killed or fallen off a cliff.

Lupe's father, a laborer, recalls how desperate his family was to find the girls. The family organized search parties. They posted flyers everywhere they could and reached out to hospitals, jails and other places. At one point, someone suggested searching in bars along highways.

Francisco - CNN has changed his name as well - and a brother went to many different bars in Morelos state, neighboring Mexico City.

Francisco says he was disgusted by what he saw: underage girls who should be in school working as prostitutes. "We would see young girls. There are many in the state of Morelos. Some of them were wearing masks. Others had their hair dyed and wore suggestive clothing," Francisco said.

At one of the bars Maria was taken to, she says she was forced to work from 3 p.m. to 6 a.m. only to get up again at noon to prepare for another 18-hour shift. "I felt so dirty, that every time I took a shower and every time they put makeup on me I felt like an old lady. I felt as if I didn't have a family," Maria said.

Forced to use drugs and drink alcohol, Maria says she thought her life would soon end. She was horrified when she saw a very young girl brought into the house where she and others were being kept. She asked the girl how old she was. The answer: eight years old.

Maria says she attempted to escape once. She ran away and asked some police officers on the street for help. What she didn't know was that the officers were on the payroll of the pimp and took her right back into the brothel where she got another savage beating.

Maria and Lupe were kidnapped on January 27, 2010. Almost three months later, when Maria says she had lost all hope, she finally saw the light - literally.

Maria says she'll never forget the date: April 14. She woke up to see a ray of light in the room coming from behind an armoire. When she pushed the armoire out of the way, she found an unlocked door.

Maria says she ran as fast as she could. Several hours later, she ran into a young man who appeared genuinely concerned about her. A group of young Christian men fed her, gave her a room to stay the night and bought her a bus ticket home.

After Maria reached home, the girls' families went to the police who raided the brothel. Ten people were arrested and six underage girls rescued, including Lupe. The eight-year-old was not among them.

Lead prosecutor Victor Carranca, the state attorney in Puebla State, says this case allowed authorities to learn about the underworld of human trafficking and the vast networks that kidnap underage girls for forced prostitution.

"The State's Attorney's office focused on targeting sources of financing for these criminal groups. We eventually closed down 600 establishments," Carranca said. "Many of these places were not only illegal brothels, but meeting points where criminal gangs planned their crimes and illegal activities."

The cousins are now getting financial, legal and psychological help from Camino a Casa, an anti-trafficking organization that focuses on assisting victims. The foundation was started in 2005 by Rosi Orozco, a Mexican lawmaker who has launched a crusade against human trafficking.

"There are some people that think they can buy another human being," Orozco says. The Mexican Congressman authored an anti-trafficking bill that was signed into law in June.

The new law makes human trafficking a federal crime, punishable by up to 40 years in prison. And it targets not only those involved in sex trafficking, but also other forms of modern slavery, including forced labor and child pornography.

Orozco is also targeting those who pay to have sex with underage girls. "We all can change if we stop saying 'johns' - they're not johns! The clients are criminals," Orozco said. She estimates tens of thousands of underage girls are sexually exploited every year in Mexico.

With the help of the Camino a Casa foundation, both Maria and Lupe are learning new skills that will help them have a brighter future. They're back with their families. Maria says her mother still cries when she thinks about what her daughter went through.

As part of her therapy, she talks to small groups of people about her ordeal. "I want people to know what they did to me. I'm no longer angry or want to get revenge. That's what I want to say. Vengeance is not good. I have already forgiven those people and I'm happy again," Maria says.

A long and painful road to recovery is ahead, but finally being home, Maria and Lupe say, allows them to dream again of a better future.

to stay on topic- the saddest part of all this is that these girls were tortured and kidnapped just so someone could bust a nut for a few seconds. Now these girls will be haunted forever. God only knows what monstrosities the 8yo girl is facing now. Im really starting to lose faith in humanity. Whoever thinks this exact thing doesn't happen in USA is oblivious

        Loose faith?
The fact this is even news is a good sign. Stuff like this used to be much, much more common, even in the US. It wasn't worth getting outraged over because it was just considered normal. So that we have such a strong reaction to it today is a big deal.

Saddest part is these kind of stories are all CNN have been posting because their rating are the worst they've ever been., and they can't post anything that isn't liberal or biased.

Well, least we know WHY. Keep it up CNN, we LOVE your liberal reporting!

Daremonai – " It wasn't worth getting outraged over because it was just considered normal." ... so in the past (and present?), you weren't outraged since you considered it normal? that's really pathetic.

Yeah well thats great but the issue is slavery, And so many people indifference to the suffering of others. Unless trouble directly effects middle and upper class folks they just dont move on a solution. If wealthy female teens were the target then congress would be on fire passing new lawsmetc etc,.But if the targets remain poor girls no politician will say a word in defense of them. And if you made a living off of kidnapping young girls Im pretty sure you would choose girls who's parents did not have the resources to hire help

Not that this thread of conversation has ANYTHING to do with the above article...
I would like point out to the people who are so strongly advocating slashing the defense budget: The defense budget also pays people like myself, active duty military members, who have families and bills. We have expenses and the need to pay bills to survive, just like you. Cutting the defense budget means less people in the military, less retention rates for members, and even lower cost-of-living pay raises. Many of the enlisted ranks fall below the poverty level, and you want to make that worse? Shame on you, for quite literally wanting to take the food out of our mouths.

Actually, try $1 trillion. When you add up the "defense" budget, the "black budget" ($56 billion for secret things we're not even told about), the money spent prosecuting the war in Afghanistan, the CIA budget, the Coast Guard, homeland security, etc. it tops out at about a trillion dollars. Absolutely preposterous.

I am glad that these 2 young ladies were able to survive their oprdeal long enough for one of them to escape and save her cousin and the others. "Maria" showed incredible strength to survive and fight to stay alive. It is a shame that in this day and age that young innocent girls can be treated so barbarically. Maybe Prez is right, if humans continue to act in these ways should the human race really be allowed to keep surviving.

Techniquely we don't need a military. All the world's most successful countries don't have them. There is no realistic reason to think that we'll ever be invaded, since we have the world's largest stockpile of nuclear weapons. The only reason to have a military, if you're a super power, is to inflict you will on weaker countries.

Yes, we do need a space program sending missions to mars and elsewhere. What we don't need is the military.

Without advancement in the space program, eventually an asteroid, overpopulation, volcano caldera erruption, genetically engineered disease, or some other horrific killer will strike a final blow to humans as if we were insignificant ants.

We must already be living in the stars in order to survive this ordeal.

Whether or not we need the military doesn't matter, because we cannot afford a $1T a year military. Our federal debt is over 100% of GDP, we can't keep the deficit where it is much longer. We already have the weakest safety net of any developed nation. We already have 50 million uninsured, millions of hungry children, and kids with cancer going untreated. We can't slash our social spending any more. We have to pay our interest on the debt. Therefore, military is the only thing we can cut. And we don't have a choice, we are at the end of the road.

In response to TJ, the US defense budget has everything to do with this article. We march into other nations on the other side of the globe under the guise of freedom, yet we do nothing for our neighbors next door. Drugs, cartels, child rape......is it any wonder that the decent people want to come to America, yet all many of us can do is call THEM criminals? Having a neighbor as out of control as Mexico is very bad for national security. 1) Legalize less harmful drugs, take the profit motive away from the cartels. 2) Send troops to support the Mexican police until the nation can rebuild. 3) Support common sense immigration reform to help those who are truly victims. If only Mexico had more oil this would be a moot point.

Let other countries alone and keep our armies at home. I hate "recreational" drugs, but you can get anything you want easily in the US. If we legalized the stuff and sold it in liquor stores we could have better control over access by children. We would also solve many of Latin America's problems, just thee repeal of prohibition helped the US.

So I guess in some backwards way you must be pointing out that if the U.S. spent only 500 billion instead of 700 billion we would still be defended better than the top 10 countries in the world and have money to invest in education, law enforcment and infastructure? I guess I have no disagreement with that but human trafficing needs more than law enforcement and Mexico needs more than education, law enforcement and infastructure. They need jobs which means Americans need jobs so we can buy Mexican goods. .....vicious circle jerk!

      • Daremonai

While poorly stated, it actually does tie in here. We have been expending vast amounts of resources on our military actions lately, meanwhile a country that we share a border with is dipping further and further into what is essentially a civil war, which at some point is going to seriously jeopardize our national security (and in many ways already is). So if we want to talk about 'how can we stop this from happening', how we allocate our military resource is an important part of the planning.

Maybe if the next 18 countries spent a bit more to have a better military, ours wouldn't have to do so much around the world!

These 18 countries have the US to protect them so why do they need a strong military?! Kinda like health insurance. Why force people to buy it when they have other people to pay for it.

It's not the hypocits, it is the professional politicians (both democrats and republicans and all the wackos like the tea party) that are in bed with the corporations sucking the life out of the hard working americans. All you politically motivated people calling out cheap shots at the other side should realize that you are just dupes. If you want to make this a great country again we need to kick out the professional politicians and start over. Maybe use a draft? If you have the qualifications your name goes in the pot, and then we pick. 1 term, no more. No one ebholding to the corporations or PACs. Just a suggestion, but the governance has to change so government once again represents the people and not the corporations and special interests.

TheBig Sarge – Problem is, if someone's psycopathic enough to think raping a child is okay, do you really believe they'll think about what they've done and give any credence to the fact that it's wrong while they're bleeding to death? Or is it more likely that they'll lie there blaming everyone else for their fate and cursing the world on their way out?

As a survivor of child molesters, I can tell you that unfortunately, the likelihood is that it would be the latter. The only regrets they tend to have is that of being caught at all.

The Catholic church encourages procreation. Millions of immigrants from Central America ride the notorious "Beast" train to escape poverty. It's a vicious cycle of overpopulation and attempted escape. One can only conclude that parents who cannot feed or properly take care of their offspring are engaging in child abuse. The Catholic church should be promoting birth control, abstinence, and critical family planning. Just this week, residents of Tulitilan, Mexico had enough of panhandlers, beggars, empty bean cans, debris, and increased crime. They boycotted and protested until Casa del Migrante, ran by the Catholic church, was forced to close down. Casa del Migrante had a two day policy for immigrants.
They helped promote an endless stream of Central Americans trying to escape poverty by risking life and limbs for a better life in the United States. The vicious cycle of poverty needs to end soon.

Wallster is correct. Many of them come to the US to flee this type of nightmare living and the drug cartel violence. I just wish a system was in place that made it easy and without fear for them to register. Many of them have little or no schooling and this compounds the problem. I am tired of the high numbers of illegals, but I can understand why many flee with their loved ones at any risk to a safer America. Americans should stop going to Mexico for vacations is how I feel about it. It would hurt them in the pockets and then maybe the people will get their fill and start demanding something be done about the violence.

there is a big difference between being a Christian and calling yourself one. look at the mafia, they all profess to be good Catholics, even as they break the Commandments.

we find this type of behaviour in every country. even the Muslem have their bad guys, and i dont mean al queda or the taliban. at least they are fighting for an idea. then there are those who are just evil and force repulsive situations like the ones in this story, against human kind.

I'm sure even "TheBigSarge" wouldn't have turned those girls away... Some Atheists are good, caring people... about the same percentage as good, caring Christians i'd suspect.

The media and the left who refuse to curb illegal immigration are the biggest TRAFFICKERS of all – just because the illegals among us don't all flip a trick doesn't mean they are not being used, abused, exploited and degraded as well.

lol, right yneeme...you should actually look up your facts before spewing lies just becaus eyou hate liberals. #1, there are less illegals entering the country now than when either Bush was in office and the fact the George W was best buddies with the corrupt leader of Mexico and did nohing about illegal immigration because he was busy starting two wars he lied to us getting into and taking away our rights and torturing prisoners and not offering prioners due process, which is one of the founding tennants of our justice system and is suppose dto make us different. Obama has sent more illegals back home than all of the GOP Presidents since regan combined, so don't say the liberals are soft on immigration. The other Big Lie being told by Faux News and repeated consistetly is that liberals want people on welfare...A liberal Democrat, Bill Clinton , was the President who tackled wefare reform in the 90's, against GOP opposition, by the way. Right now, the welfare system is a temporary way to make ends meet for poor Americans. The max anyone can stay on welfare is 24 months. Ineresting that more white people are on welfare than blacks or hispanics...Liberals believe in a compassionate country where the people and Government take care of the less fortunate. No one wnats generations of families on welfare, no one. Stop repeating lies about liberals.

No new taxes! Let's eliminate food stamps, welfare, social security, medicaide and any organization that offers family planning at the same time. It would take 10 years to re-create the US into the new Mexico...under the Tea Party plan, were almost there. As long as we don't have Muslims in our Government and stop funding any program to actually healp 99% of Americans, we'll be ok, don't worry.

I love all the comments that say "stay out of Mexico" or referencing OTHER countries and implying that this does not happen in the U.S. REALITY check everyone:

"An estimated 17,500 women and children are trafficked into the U.S. every year. That's not counting domestic trafficking, which is harder to track. Advocacy groups believe about 300,000 girls are bought and sold in the United States annually. Texas accounts for 25 percent of that business."

And guess what? The people going to the brothels outside of our country are usually American tourists looking to violate an under aged girl (I am NOT talking about 16-year old girls that look 21... these are CHILDREN... as young as six-years old).

This is NOT a problem that is found ONLY outside of the U.S.

To these criminals these girls are a commodity, straight and simple. Unfortunately, this is a practice that is prevalent throughout the world, adults preying on the young and innocent. They have no conscience, no respect for these innocent victims. They are not thinking about these children as children, they are not thinking about their parents that are heartbroken and missing their child. The men that patronize these brothels have no respect for these children and are depraved, misogynistic pediphiles. The government and officials are either bribed and don't care. Laws have to be changed and mandated in order for the pimps, madams and johns (pedophiles) to understand the brevity of their crimes. I say if you abduct, rape, sell or assault a child, no trial, no jury, you go directly to the firing squad, just like they do in some Arabic countries for lesser crimes in my opinion (mostly against women, some men for theft etc...). The U.S. spends more money on laws for animal rights than children's rights. We are slowly creating a generation of children that will experience more post traumatic stress disorder, have health related issues (AIDS, unwanted pregnancy, self image issues, mental trauma, lack of trust, etc...) than any generation before us, what does that say for our humanity?

    July 19, 2012 at 4:03 pm | Reply
    • Logical Thinker

Amen Rodarta. Your comments are spot on. Every day, young people are abducted in broad daylight. It's not safe for our children and young adults to travel alone or in pairs, especially females. What is fueling the increase for human trafficking?
One simple answer: Adult Entertainment industry. It's a billion dollar business. The human brain imprints on visual imagery. Human traffickers know depraved minds want to live out their fantasies. So it creates a demand that is lucrative. Look at the Craigslist postings in any major city. Check out the gig section and see all the ads for young women 18-30 years old. Luring them to get involved in the adult entertainment business for big money. Human traffickers are making money by abducting unwilling, easy targets. Encourage children and young adults to travel in groups or with a street wise adult. And you wonder why conceal and carry permits are increasing in numbers.

Articles like this one are why I read CNN less and less.

Yes, what was done to those children was horrific, and by the grace of God they made it out alive. Unfortunately, this type of criminal enterprise is both NOT NEW, and NOT GOING AWAY.

How many 'non-adults' have been raped since time began? Articles like this are put here for one simple purpose: To impose emotional shocks on the public, and then to feed the trolls of public division and have us fighting about COMPLETELY unrelated topics of debate.

All of you who are fighting amongst each other, are idiots. You are doing exactly what the machine wants you to do. Put in your meaningless, hateful, POINTLESS two cents, and change NOTHING.

    Pathetic. Simply pathetic.

I think articles like these are just here to inform us the realities that are happening behind our backs in dark alleys. If no one reported this stuff rational people would not know about this. The first stage of combating these kinds of things and building public support.

The customers are the problem. The pimps are the problem. Human greed and bad people are the problem. Spending billions to attempt to stop weed from crossing the border while this is going on is the problem. Last but not least, jilted and/or lesbian women who think that the whole issue can be boiled down to poisonous testosterone is the problem. Keep pointing a finger at 50% of the population when maybe 1 in a million men would not be completely disgusted by this and let me know how that has solved anything.

I used to love visiting Mexico, especially the east coast/Riviera Maya side (but not Cancun). Beautiful country, incredible scenery and ruins, and generally a very hospitable public...until now. Now the drug gangs are in control. Police forces are corrupt and owned by the gangs. Even government troops have been busted for selling-out to the drug lords. It is very sad. I'm glad these girls' lives were saved. Many more will be lost. Who is funding the drug lords? WE ARE! Only "cure" to this problem, which would also destroy most of the US gang problems, simultaneously, and put a huge dent in our economic problems, both through increased tax revenues and employment, is to legalize and produce the least harmful drugs, especially marijuana. Cocaine is a dangerously addictive drug, as is heroin, but I'd rather see those legalized and under government control (ours), than give all that money to US gangs and their foreign suppliers. Take away the stigma, make the drugs as "safe" as possible (i.e. don't let J&J run manufacturing and bottling), and not only will we make our own country stronger and safer, but we will stop feeding those who are destroying Mexico and other central/south American countries. If someone insists upon doing drugs, they're going to, and nothing will stop the supply when there is so much demand. I know it's a slippery slope, but we're more than halfway down it already. Time to take control and deal with the reality that people are going to do drugs, whether they be legal or not. We can do more to help these people, and our country, if we remove the illegality. You can buy alcohol just about anywhere. Few drugs are more potent or more dangerous (pot does not increase crime or spousal abuse, nor does it destroy peoples' livers or lives, yet it is illegal, while alcohol is taxed and *barely* restricted). Cocaine and Heroin are bad – no question. Folks are now buying heroin because the doctors are so afraid of giving them the opiates they need or crave. Better of two evils.

The Catholic church continues to sit back and do nothing in this Catholic majority country. I think when someone commits a hideous crime, instead of saying the person was black, white, Hispanic, etc. They should post the persons religion. This will hopefully put shame on the various religions and expose them for what they really are. If they produce bad fruit, then take away their Tax exempt status since they are obviously failing.

The fact that the young lady in the story has been able to speak of her ordeal to others, to help others through it and is not driven to act in revenge or hate leads me to have at least a glimmer of hope for humanity. If anyone deserves to have a book penned about her experience it is this young lady.... perhaps even more dare I say deserving than people locked up in Italian gaols. Perhaps in reading such a book some other poor soul in torment might see there is hope even in utter inhumanity.

It is important to keep in mind that a HUGE source of income for the criminal organizations south of the border is the sale of marijuana. A large fraction of the marijuana users are supporting the drug cartels and other criminals just for the sake of getting high. And these users want to get rewarded by getting the use of marijuana legalized. These users are simply selfish hypocrites who deserve to get fined severely or put in jail for the support they offer to drug traffickers. I know that this is not politically correct but it is still true.

Human trafficking will get much worse if we legalize drugs because the criminals who deal in drugs are not about to go get legitimate jobs just because their crime of choice is eliminated. They will go into human trafficking, other violent crimes, or even just switch to whichever drugs are not legalized. .

Obama continues to love socialism, despite the fact that it has never, ever, ever worked. The rest of the world is running from it. Obama and the dems are running TO it.

I have learned nothing so far on this blog except hostility and infantile comments. It is this type of devisive behavior that breeds negative behavior into the world. I've been on this earth a long time and it baffles me as to why gays are the enemies when heteros abort, over-populate our planet, rape, hate, practice hypocricy to its fullest degree. Like a bunch of angry little kids putting down our country. complaining about our president, whining about things that have nothing to do with this article, attacking heteros with complete disrespect. This is a perfect picture of how far humanity has fallen. I guess it's just too much work to try and be just a little forgiving to those you don't share the same opinion with. Everyone hiding behind their computer screens while saying every nasty thing they can think of, which of course they would never have the guts to say face to face. Thanks to the abuse of the internet, people have discovered a new way to hate, and it looks like they "love it". We will all be required to give an account of every word, and deed, said, and done. Try spending some time helping, and not hating. May GOD bless these girls for what they have endured, and I hope with all my heart that those responsible will be removed from society permanently. Unfortunately satan has held many people prisoner, "with their permission". And they are still out here ready and willing to destroy whatever and whoever they can. So if everyone is really and truly upset by what they're writing, then band together as one voice, and do it in LOVE and not these stupid hate filled accusations and change will occur.

These traffickers should firstly get a few months' taste of their own medicine, perhaps "given" to a prison for the inmates to enjoy. Then to some pharmaceutical companies to do experiments on. Humans have always had this capacity for evil, and nowhere is it more troubling than in the exploitation of children. The people responsible for the kidnapping, rape, and abuse of these girls ought to be put up in front of a firing squad.

Reading the comments on this page is further evidence for why everyone outside the usa will be glad when china overtakes you as the dominant power.
You really are so deluded, not all of you but the vast majority on this page. ( I mean the right wing lunatics)
Sending probes to mars is worthless? Advancing human civilisation is the most important thing, because your country refuses to save the planet we live on, maybe we should explore the cosmos a bit more.
most of your opinions on healthcare are retarded. The heathcare in america is the laughing stock of the rest of the developed world and some of you seem so resistant to any positive change. comdemning your poor to sickness.
Mexico is not a cancer and should not be destroyed. it a wonderful country. But of course, if something is different to you and has oil reserves, you should invade it right?
Your belief in needing a military, for what? incase canada goes rogue? in case jamaica attempts the most ambitious invasion attempt ever? do you feel uneasy being so close to the military powerhouse that is Haiti? seriously, grow up. You like a military because it makes you feel important, powerful and allows you to bully smaller countries to get the resources you want from them. and when a serious problem arrises, like the libyan crisis recently, what did you do? not much, britain and france had to do the majority of it. in Syria, what have you done? nothing. When your strongest allies had their islands in the south pacific invaded, what did you do. nothing. you dont even support them on that issue.
Even in ww2 it took you way too long to get your head out of the sand, and only joined in when you were attacked. millions were already dead. the hollocaust already happened. and what did you do? nothing for years and then arrived at the end when the russians had pretty much won the damn thing and claim to have saved the world!
And someone had the cheek to say, if you're going to talk, atleast talk in english! hahaha americans talking about the language they destroy on a daily basis!

    Please, just look at yourselves.

the usa causes more suffering world wide than any other nation.
