Nepalese dying to work
Kathmandu, Nepal (CNN) - Twenty-one-year-old Ramila Syangden weeps uncontrollably as she clutches her 10-month-old baby. She sits and watches as the pyre where her husband’s body will be cremated is set alight in the open Nepalese air.
Syangden never considered one of the potential consequences of her husband’s decision to work abroad. Now she can’t ignore it.
Hours before the Buddhist cremation ceremony she watched the coffin, with her husband’s body inside, arrive on a flight from Saudi Arabia where he had worked.
The paperwork says the 36-year old committed suicide there. Not a single person gathered for the cremation ceremony believes it.
“I don’t think so. He said he would go abroad, see the place, earn as much as he could for the children and come back. I think somebody killed him,“ his wife said.
She may never know exactly what happened to him. But the family says he had every reason to live. He was a retired police officer collecting a pension. He was healthy and he’d been working in Saudi Arabia for less than a month without any complaints.
“When my son went I thought that he would earn money for the family but his dead body came back instead,” his father, Sonam Singh Bomjang, said.
He can’t believe his son died this way, especially considering he survived being shot by Maoists while serving as a Nepali police officer.
The family's story is not at all unusual. Nepal is one of the poorest countries on earth. With little work available, an estimated 1,300 Nepalese citizens go abroad for work every single day. But every day some return in coffins.
“On an average per day, two to three coffins are coming back to Nepal mostly from the Gulf countries,” said sociologist Ganesh Gurung, a member of Nepal’s government task force for foreign labor reform.
The official reason for the deaths vary, but once the bodies make it to Nepal the cause of death is rarely if ever investigated further.
Gurung says Nepalese workers attracted by good money abroad often face awful problems. The most common complaint: workers do not get what they were promised. But the complaints can be far worse, particularly for women who work as maids in homes.
“They have experienced physical exploitation, sexual exploitation, and we have received many girls coming back with children from their employers,” Gurung said.
We met one such maid. Not even her own family knows the pain she has suffered. Kumari is seven months pregnant and said the baby inside her is a product of rape. The father, she says, is her former employer in Kuwait.
For a year-and-a-half Kumari said she was paid the equivalent of $144 a month but then the pay stopped and the beatings started.
“My landlord would beat me, they (he and his wife) both would beat me. My body would ache. I bore that beating for a long time but stayed,” she said in tears.
Then one day, she said, the beating came with something else; rape.
She said the landlord came home when the rest of the family was out, and called her into the bathroom while she was folding clothes in another room. When she refused he came to her.
“He beat me up. First he covered my mouth so I could not scream. After he did that (raped me) I asked for my passport. He wouldn’t give it to me,” she said her voice breaking.
So she fled to the Nepalese Embassy in Kuwait with no passport. She says she spent weeks in Nepalese custody and found herself with dozens of other Nepali women.
Some were pregnant like her, others had babies, and still others were one their own - but they all wanted to escape employment there.
The 35-year-old divorced mother of two now lives in a shelter in Nepal with other maids recovering from abuse abroad. When we asked what she planned to do with the baby on the way she said: “I wanted to get rid of this baby, (abort it), but they told me that was not possible because my life would be endangered.”
She was several months pregnant when she finally made it back to Nepal. “Now the baby is going to be born. I am not going to keep it,” she said.
For more than 10 years, Nepal banned women from traveling to Gulf countries for work after the suicide of a Nepalese maid who complained of abuse in Kuwait.
But the need to survive surpassed fear and women did it illegally. The government lifted the ban in 2010.
Now the lines for foreign work visas are as long as ever, even as the stories of despair keep coming home.
Human labor is Nepal’s largest export. The workers usually sign two or three-year contracts to work for employers abroad. The money Nepalese workers send back to their families from outside the country accounts for nearly 25% of Nepal’s gross domestic product.
It is big business in Nepal, officially second only to agriculture. And some labor experts argue remittances from abroad are actually the biggest contributor to the country’s economy because it is nearly impossible to tally all the cash that makes its way back into the country.
At a training facility in the capital, Masino Tamang is going abroad for the second time to find work even after he says he endured backbreaking work the first time.
He was promised a job as a driver, but when he arrived in Malaysia the job was making and lifting heavy furniture.
Still Tamang plans to try again. This time he is getting training and going through a professional agency.
“I am not going because I want to. People have money problems. If I stay home I will not be able to earn anything,” he said.
Some do make a relatively decent living but all say they work very hard. The government has now mandated any citizen going to work abroad must attend an orientation course.
Private companies such as SOS Manpower offer skills training and safety training to villagers who will be working on buildings on a scale they have never seen before. Many of the workers come from mountain villages where the only skyscraper is the Himalayan mountains.
But nothing can prepare these men for the searing desert heat in the countries where they will work. The heat has often been suspected in worker deaths.
For those using illegal means to get work abroad, the living conditions can be so horrid and unsanitary it makes workers sick.
Nepal’s Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai told CNN he is well aware of the many problems Nepal’s workers are facing abroad. He told us the government has been making changes to try to protect its workers.
“We have instructed our missions in those countries to take the issue seriously, but the main problem still is as long as we can’t provide jobs within our own country they are forced to migrate. They use illegal channels and when they go there illegally then they don’t have legal protection,” he said.
Bhattarai has a plan to bring more jobs to his country but concedes it could take years to see the fruits of that plan.
Far too late for the men and women who returned emotionally scarred, or even in a box, for simply trying to create a better life for themselves.

Nepal needs to focus on development of local economy. Sandwiched between China and India, Nepalese government never leaned towards any of these competing giants. However, they have managed to anger and frustrate both of them.
It is high time that Nepalese government take some bold steps, side with at least economic policies of either China or India and speed up development.
In the long run, that could be the ultimate solution to sufferings of Nepalese people

I was surprised to see that CNN was featuring this story, because it has seemed to me that CNN has focused its wrath on tiny Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East and the only place where people of all faiths can live safely and worship as they please. Hating Israel is the new anti-Semitism, while the terrible situations in most Arab countries are distorted by the media, called misleadingly an "Arab Spring" which is no more than uninformed, misled tribalism among the citizens of those countries and a rise of Islamists. In Lebanon, women young and old, are often sent home to their countries in a wooden box,dead from beatings and severe abuse at the hands of their Arab employers. Most of the mainstream media today has significant Arab ownership, so much of this information is suppressed. Glad to see that CNN is doing this article, and hope that it won't be the only one.

Nepal used to be a monarchy. As expected, the Royals did little for the people and so called democratic government (a puppet under the king) was basically overthrown by communist guerrillas. No wonder, political upheaval and incompetence lead to poor governance and widespread poverty.
Such a stark contrast. Saudi Arabia is a monarchy - Saudi Arabia produced the worst terrorists in the world. 15 out of 19 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia. Bin Laden was from Saudi Arabia. Nepal is a very peaceful country with friendly and nice people. No terrorists from Nepal ever - unlike the muslim middle eastern countries.

Obama signed the annual waiver to the federal law condoning slavery last Sept. The US State Dept annual TIP (slave status) report for 2012 is past due. Just feel like adding some lines with the flow....also think Nepal government has to strongly look after Sugauli Treaty if possible ..according to the terms Nepal should be back to original maps by now or after 1950. Until the Sugauli Sandhi (treaty) was signed, the territory of Nepal also included Darjeeling, and Tista to the east, Nainital to the south-west and Kumaun, Garwal and Bashahar to the west. However, today these areas are still parts of India instead of Nepal. Not only that.. the result is that even today there are accusations of encroachment and disputes at 54 places of the Nepal-India borderline. The prominent areas have been identified as Kalapani- Limpiyadhura, Susta, Mechi area, Tanakpur, Sandakpur, Pashupatinagar, Hile Thori etc. Nepal's 1/3 rd land is still with India. Hong Kong is back to China according treaty terms with Britain. Why Nepal's part is still with India ? Indians stole Nepal's land talking advantage of the powerless situation. I think Nepal would be in the military conflict/war with India if we are in a place of Pakistan, China or USA today without a doubt. if Nepal will get all that 1/3 land back according to actual treaty terms signed with British India during 1815 & 1816, Nepal's border is going all the way to Bangladesh and/or close to a sea in a situation where Nepal do not have to depend with India anymore for import/export at all if don't wist to do so...also don't have to be their political victim like always. Nepal would be in a very different situation in terms of national & International economic model with better economically prosperous country at the same geographic location. Nepal may not be in a current political crisis & economic challenges. Nepal is like another state of India. Indian Army protect Nepal from Chinese Invasion. Nepalese students are studying in Indian Engineering & Medical colleges. So many Nepali's are working in India to support there livelihood. Nepal should be having a close relationship with democratic India rather than autocratic china or extremist Pakistan.
Be happy in whatever land you are living & be friendly with INDIA. In the quest of regaining land with India, you might became an extinct nation. Chief Minister of Bihar has recently visited Nepal & you must feel great about it, Indian PM has more important things to do.

well thats not really the issue. the government in Nepal has been extremely incompetent for decades. it refuses to work with its neighbors, much less allow its people to flourish and work. for year nepal has refused to allow foreign nations to set up a working relationship the benefits its GDP and continues to allow its government to abuse the use of its income. its really sad.
China didn't "take" anything from anyone. They made an offer and there were takers. If anyone has a problem with that, from toys, dvds and to dry wall and clothes -they can simply refuse to purchase from them.

You don't think that it might have something to do with the fact that Nepal is the home of the Ghurka, the most feared fighters on the planet. They get sent in when other special forces can't cut it. After their service in the British army they are in very high demand by private contractors.

As a relative of Gurkha, I have always wondered what attracted Brits to recruiting us. The answer my uncle gave me was loyalty and 'hot temper' – no second thought of life. If that's what you think makes you brave, its your opinion. We don't give a banana anyway, since the pay's high (compared to Nepal's economic climate) and we get pension – standard.

Had visited Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan in Nepal as a tourist in 2011.Was astounded by the natural beauty of this country, especially Pokhara which was identical to Switzerland.The local people seemed happy despite the poverty and wealth is a subject of comparison and hence not a definition of human happiness.Citizens of First World country's might find the living standards of Third world Country's very backward economically and yet be surprised at the contended life-style of some third world country's, most prominently, Nepal.Most manual labourours from Third World and developing economies are exploited when seeking jobs in foreign country's, some even deprived off wages or given back-dated payments after months of service.Suicide rate amongst foreign workers in Gulf Country's is a common problem which also includes nationals from Indian, Pakistani, Baangladesh, and Sri Lanka.

Very true. Thank you for sharing your view. Nepalese people are suffering this middle east foreign exploitation because of thenepalese political situation and politicians greed. Even inside nepal, lack of law makes people go through lots of turmoil. Things are getting worse and we will find more of these tragic news. Since Arab laws are totally different only way to stop this is to not send people there to work.
Spent many years in the Gulf. Western backing of these corrupt royalties makes me sick. US and Britain are very double faced when it comes to human rights, Start putting pressure on Saudi, Kuwait and Emirates to stop these abuses. Very sad to see these people being treated like wild creatures. Wild creatures are treated better in these countries, these countries obtained the oil bonanza before most of the locals learned humanity. This has nothing to do with religion, also met many decent Gulf people who wouldn't dream of doing anything like human rights abuses.

the western nations have been the biggest importers of oil for decades. our money provides these jerks with the means to live the lifestyles they choose to lead and their pride coupled with the means with which to do it is what leads to these abuses. the exploitation and torture of south asian workers in gulf nations is nothing new. I am a Sri Lankan and the horror stories we hear on a daily basis from workers who manage to get out rightly belong in steven king novels. Within the last year, several cases of housemaids with nails inserted into their skin emerged. Their employers alleged that the workers did it to themselves (of course they did). "Suicides" are almost a daily occurrence. Its time affected nations take a united stand of not sending workers to these countries and those self appointed human rights watchdogs started taking a more vocal and assertive stand against these kinds of atrocities. However money rules and so long as poverty levels remain as high as they are in countries such as Sri Lanka and Nepal, people will find ways, even at the risk of life and limb, to get these sort of 'slave labour' jobs in the middle east. Its absolutely sickening.

it not unusual for people working in the middle east..especially when people go to work there come from a third world country and wen the also work ther as a maid or a dirver or those non-professional work force...that is also very common news here in the philippines...i feel bad for those people...i blame the government for what happened to them...i could not imagine why those people treat those hard working migrant workers like low life animals...those people are migrating only to find job and hoping to uplift their family's poor situation...i consider those people treating migrant workers inhumane hard treatment as "barbaric individuals" uneducated...those people dont have a religion...

Prime Minister Bhattarai says the problem will only be solved by creating jobs in our own country. I'd like to ask you HOW? Theres a war for power going on the past decade and any political party will call a strike as they please. How will you create jobs in a country that has strikes 3-4 times a month, 16 hour power cuts, poor roads, airport and is land locked..someone asked about FDI, so here's why intl companies dont wanna invest in Nepal. would i invest in Nepal if i were an MNC? NO!
Someone asked about the govt here? we are still trying to form a stable govt, nobody stays in power long enuff to make a difference.. even if they do, corruption is deep rooted. I dont say they're all corrupt, but the system eats up most of the tax revenue, hence the poor infrastructure.
So how can this issue of migration for work be tackled???
in the short run – Int'l organizations need to cooperate with the govt to train and educate people who are going abroad to work. I met this man at the airport who asked me to fill up his immigration form. He could not read or write. When i asked where he was going he sais 'Abu Dubai'. I told him 'Sir, thats not a place. its either Dubai or its Abu Dhabi, where are you going?'. He didnt know. Shows you that they're so uneducated that many dont even know where theyre going, they cant speak Arabic, they have never left their little mountain village, and are desperate to make ends meet and send some money back home. Of course such people will be exploited! They need to be educated and empowered. Letting them go unequipped is like asking a child who hasnt learned to walk yet, to cross the street.
In the long run – I echo PM Bhattarai's words. We need jobs. But with a govt like that who's going to create jobs? We need an Investment Promotion Agency that has very little to do with the government and is funded by the Int'l community or is self sustainable. This agency should work to attract FDI and provide MNCs with every facility they need in order to establish themselves here in Nepal. Just like Costa Rica did. This agency must work to attract investment in high value and labor intensive job creating industries.. Enough relying on Tourism and Agriculture.
But I ask my friends reading this -> in a country like Nepal, who's gonna work to bring about this change?

Thanks john, for commenting and giving sympathy to Nepali. The reason behinds this is education. Most of the Nepali whom where living in under the poverty level they haven't any basic daily living things. you gave an example regarding one guy saying that Abu dubai , and he don't know his destination , works , company name and salary so how they can fight for their rights. Another big hand they are paying huge money to Manpower agency so they have to stay for to pay back with keeping mouth quite.
As per Nepal government data everyday around 1300 workers are going abroad and government charging 1000 from each . So government can use this money for supporting to this workers.This money is more than enough to support and create a relief fund.
I surprised myself to hear and see such discrimination in middle east between human being. Middle east people are very poor in mentally they are not able to treat a human being as humanity .

You can make the change! You are intelligent and sound very educated, and you certainly know your country's plight. Run for office and make that change. I was in Nepal in 2000-2002 during the Royal Family massacre. Your people are sweet and gentle and accept their life's lot. But your people need to be educated which can make a difference in their mentality. It won't happen overnight since Nepal was in the dark until the 50's. Every country has the potential to be great, but unfortunately, most countries don't have good leaders. Be one, Joon.

i know that its easy to be a spectator and criticize the system, you have to get in it and get ur hands dirty and clean the mess urself.. but i would rather spend a lifetime contributing to the national income through entrepreneurship and creating jobs as opposed to working for a govt not knowing if my efforts will ever be rewarded. i am sure many many other fellow Nepalis share this belief..

There are many Nepalese in London (as another poster pointed out, Nepalese have an excellent reputation for their skills in security, for being conscientious, hard working, reliable). In fact, I have met a few individuals working in those types of roles – and they live up to their country's good reputation. But, as long as a country cannot provide enough employment for it's people – then both the best and the weakest will be forced to look elsewhere for jobs. And the weakest will be exploited (weakest in terms of language skills, ability to do more than just manual labor).
Responsibility is shared, both by employing nations to ensure that they protect all those working in their borders and by the 'source' nation that there are industries / knowledge training in place to prepare their people for global jobs or allow them to stay at home, in their society and in their families, and be able to provide for their dependents.

I must admit to having known very little about Nepal, as a westerner. I am impressed, however, at the number of comments that describe the people as honest, smiling, trustworthy, & hard working. Not one comment has said otherwise. I do, however, know much more about the middle east, even though I've never been to the region. And despite the reality that there are many good & kind people, there are far too many with a dysfunctional mindset & an arrogance of superiority that is inexcusable.

There should be an international moratorium on sending workers from poor countries to work in Gulf countries. I live in Saudi Arabia. It is still a slave society. They treat the poor workers from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, etc, and to a lesser extent the Philippines, like they are lower than dirt. The companies lie to get these poor people into the country, then confiscate their passports, withhold wages, sometimes literally work them to death. Beatings and rape are so commonplace it is just accepted as normal. I know that it's hard to find work in these countries that the migrant workers are coming from.. but there has got to be a better way.
I was in Dubai quite recently and stayed at my friends house. They own a Villa there and have employed a Nepalese woman for taking care of the house. Fortunately she is treated like a member of the family and is doing just fine. But that is not the case for the rest of the Nepalese and my fellow Indians who go there as unskilled labourers. Humanity and ethics in the Gulf depends on three things. Your Religion, Your nationality, and your Bank Balance. If you dont meet any of these categories you are pretty much fair game for anyone who decides to exploit you. Don't forget that the middle east despite its wealth features very low on human rights and though I don't want to criticize its inhabitants, their behaviour towards people 'lower' than them is nothing short of Barbaric. But the problem with India and Nepal is that we are ruled by a bunch of complete Idiots and we the people are the bigger ones to let it happen and watch our man power leave the country when we desperately require it ourselves. Maybe we should enforce a Ban in India for working in the Gulf and see how the Sheikhs are brought to their knees and they start treating us better. If we don't fight for ourselves and demand respect, don't expect anyone to come and give it to you on a platter.
Sri Lankans and others have suffered in Saudi Arabia it's time to ban anyone from going to work there. Does the UN Human Rights Commission still exist? Is it not high time to end Saudi exploitation of workers imported to do what they do not want to do for themselves. If all the Gulf States are forced to change to get workers it will be a different day. If they are banned from having any outside workers it will be good for the world. That includes well educated workers who do not serve in households, farms, hotels or factories.
Nothing unusual about getting raped in the middle east. Sri Lankan and Indonesian women suffer the same fate. Nepalese men love working as security guards and I have seen some of them working 48 hours non stop. However putting them in labor section will have the opposite effect. Indian Govt. should immediately declare financial package to overcome the Nepalis from the difficult financial crisis. Indian Govt. shoud make big investment nearby the Indo Nepal border so that the Nepalis can get job and this will help in reducing the flow of nepalis to Guld countries.

i used to work abroad, as a cabin steward in Singapore, which might sound good but we had to work minimum 12 hrs a day and no weekends for 10 months...and the pay was well, 175 dollars in 2005...
had to work 20 hrs during dry docks...
i came back, continued my study and after 5 yrs, passed the public service exam and im working as a government employee now..
so all my fellow countrymen, come back, study, improve ur skills and ill guarantee u ll get a job here...

Not everyone can finish school, there are people who are better as workers. The topic is abuse by these gulf countries. Western countries with business in the gulf should deal with Arab companies only if they treat their workers with dignity. This can be done as a start. Westren governments should also put pressure on these countries for human rights abuses.

It became like faith of Nepalese workers. The government is not interested to see the fact that the worker is killed not suicide. But there is one case last year where the employer apologize and paid large some of compensations though that is nothing against the life of a father of 2 kids, a husband, a son of 82 years parents . . . The Nepali Workers in South Korea committed suicide because of harassment by the management. But with the power of Union (KCTU, MUT) and Workers form an investigation team and find out the cause of death.
So, there is a strong need of workers to be organized and need solidarity to win. Beside that the international community should focus on workers right

This is a really appalling story, and it's nothing short of tragic that human rights organizations are silent when crimes as heinous as rape and physical abuse/torture are being perpetrated on such a mass scale. As someone who was born and grew up in the gulf, I can testify to the fact that arrogance rules supreme among those countries. It seems as if the oil boom happened a little too abruptly, bringing wealth sans the civilization to these states. We need to hear more of these stories.

@Kuldipjang The states in the gulf region will always need low paid workers to do work which native nationals would not deign to. While Nepal is just a focus for this story, a lot of what's written is true for low/medium skilled workers coming from anywhere in the emerging economies to those countries. Ultimately, you're battling a mindset that equates wealth among a myriad of other cultural factors to superiority. The onus is on the powerful western governments to pressurize these countries to reform their curricula and press the oildoms to pass some legislation to protect worker rights AND implement them via a reformed law enforcement system that does not favor the powerful.

Sad story. But this is not news and it is definitely not new. This happens with EVERY maid in the Gulf. Oman, Saudi, UAE,.. Let me tell you what are the other things that happen. Camel racing is very famous in these countries. I have never watched one but have heard of many uch stories. To make the camels run faster, they tie babies and small children on camels necks, bellies etc. As the children screan in terror, the camels run in terror and the Arab bas*** smoke hookah, fondle the women and laugh.. bast**. First they take away the passport (except for US and UK citizens, the passport of every foreigner needs to be with the employer). If you are a visitor, you need to deposit your passport with the Hotel ). White collar slavery of the Arab world. And when the people from the thirdworld countries go to their embassies for help, they are treated like dirt. Welcome to the world of modern slavery. I knew many Nepali workers when I was working at a hypermarket in my town, one of whom passed away due to a stomach cancer. He had collapsed and was sent to hospital where they diagnosed him. Before his collapse, he had been sickly and the clinic only gave him the usual meds. So by the time he was admitted, it was too late. He passed away at the age of 25.
Unless Arab govt s stop supporting sponsors and abolish sponsorship system,this will go on.

There is always migration of labour from poor settlements /farmers to cities and from poor countries to rich for better living,life styles .eg Mexico to US – Nepal /Bangladesh/Pakistan/Phillipines to Middle East region Asia .Always they bring back huge remittance back and better life style for everyone .Along with the good there is evil dark side and Sara Sidner brings out very well in the article which is very true.Have to also give credit to Nepalese people who have been mercenary and very good export soldiers Gurkhas with various armies around the world for a long time .
I am an American attorney who has worked in Kuwait and in other GCC countries. During my stay in Kuwait for over 6 years I witnessed hundreds of absolutely cruel and inhumane cased of Nepalese, Indian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Philippines, Indonesians, and now Chinese. I have met the Ambassadors of India, Bangladesh, Philippines and others and got the same lip service from them without any solutions whatsoever. I have personally bought airline tickets of hundreds of women with little children to go back to Bangladesh. I have written dozens of letters to various human right organizations as well as to our own embassy in Kuwait and copied State Department in DC without any response. As a matter of fact out own American Embassy fully endorses such illegal practices and looks the other way. But this is another issue. However, Kuwaiti government has made some progress in this area but Saudi is the worse. They don't care for such formalities and still practice slavery. Unfortunately, none of the GCC countries have yet made laws for the employers for making it illegal to hold the passports of their employees and not allowing them to transfer their residency visa to enable them to find other employment. Suicide and rape by the employers and their family members is very common that I have witnessed in Kuwait in particular. In this inhumane trafficking of young women who are lured to this hell its not only the Kuwaitis and the Saudis who are alone in this sage of life threatening jobs but the main facilitators are their own country men who solicit to these prospective employees with all kinds of false promises at a very high visa prices they receive. Every government bodies of their respective government is fully aware of each and every details but they could only hold on to their lucrative overseas assignments if they don't speak about such issues and don't expose the culprits. Like our own American foreign officers, third world country's diplomats are often given generous and lofty treatments by the host countries and this is one of the reason none of them take any actions against their host countries. This practice has been going on for last 5 decades or so and will continue for the next decade or so. All the hoopla about "human rights" and "human dignity" is just a big farce and no one really gives a damn! Like many who stood up for the victims, I also paid the price of getting implicated of self-fabricated baloney and decided to leave my legal practice there as well.
Once we are done with their oil we will make it into second iran or iraq. Till then have patience and hope we come with electric and hybrid cars soon and develop our solar energy

There is a non-profit Christian religious organization in a Middle East country and they have an agenda to run proselytizing activites. They were forcing, for years, young and disabled Muslim kids and young adults to participate in Christian activities. They were even denied their own basic human rights, the right to practice their Islamic religion. I was warned to be very careful to submit the case because that organization has good relations with the local government. Worse, I am not a citizen of that country. I said, what the hell. Humanity shall prevail!

I would like to go back about 15 yrs back when we Nepalese were poor but happy, peaceful , proud of soverignity ,proud of culture, proud of wealth of beauty, religion, culture and so on.........Despite being governed by incompetent and slow progressing government he country was stable and going towards positive direction. Then bunch of dissatisfied so.... called liberators started so called peoples war vs government. Their main objective was to liberate poor illeterate villagers from poverty, provide opportunity for education and so on.......all the good stuff.... They idolized communism which was already faded from rest of the world. They unstabilized country, abducted and recruited childrens for their purpose, killed teachers, terrorized public , infrastructures were bombed,business and factories were forcefully shut down creating job shortage and so on.....all the bad stuff..... They used vanurable peoples illeteracy as a weapone of choice and showed them dream of beautiful Nepal once would come to power.
With all the exports and industries plumetted due to constant instability and no jobs in the country people have no choice but to seek jobs in other countries even though it is tough.

I feel ashamed that Korea is one of the countries that exploit foreign workers who come to Korea for a chance to earn money. All the workers from developing countries want is a small amount of money. In exchange they are willing to do 3D jobs- dirty, dangerous, and demeaning. The pay isn't even that much. Yet, Koreans always ask for more from the workers. There are no safe working environments or proper health ensurance. It lowers the image of Korea. Nepal may have a lot to accomplish to reach economic stability, but Korea also needs to enforce stricter measures against people who exploit foreign workers. We can't afford to have a select few dirty the image of the rest.

One night the woman struck and kicked a female worker in the face and my great aunt said in a very low voice "I don't think you should do that." The next day she found her self being sent home with no pay.
The Gulf countries should do everything in their power to investigate these complaints. Many people in the world have a negative opinion of Islam because of terrorism perpetrated by a relatively small number of radicals. Here is an opportunity for the Gulf states to say, "No, Islam does not stand for murder and maltreatment" and thoroughly investigate and punish those responsible. Then, the eyes of the world can see that they take such issues seriously. By not investigating these deaths, the Gulf states seem to say that they are fine with disregarding Islamic law and tradition when it comes to foreign workers. Nepal is a beautiful place to visit and it has great potential for a thriving tourist industry which would go far in relieving chronic unemployment. Unfortunately, the Nepalese government charges thousands of dollars in fees to each tourist who visits. So, while it is tragic that their people are forced to work and die on foreign soil for an income. The Nepalese government is clearly responsible for preventing job creation in the one area that could relieve some of their unemployment woes.
What can be done for the Nepalese and their living environments??

American contract companies also mistreat Nepalese and many other foreign workers overseas in Iraq. They made billions and millions and b/c it's overseas there are no labor standards, and many are not paid what they're promised (often many actually paid a fee to get the job in the first place). Though no one died that I saw, their treatment was embarrassing to me as a American and a Soldier to witness this first hand in Iraq.

After the 1% take over the goverment and move jobs overseas, the people in the U.S. will have to the the route of the Nepal people and work abroad for cheap wages. Not like the big wages the are getting now for working overseas.
This is issue with people from gulf states occurs in the U.S. as well in their home countries. In my former neighborhood in McLean, Va (just outside of Washington DC), we had several houses owned by gulf state governments. The households of these embassy personnel often included servants from other countries, such as Nepal. The servants were rarely allowed out of the house (only to the fenced back yard). Occasionally, one would appear injured with bandages or a limp. Sometimes we could hear yelling and screaming. Calls to the police would result in the police being sent away as the had questionable jurisdiction on diplomatic property.
These are sick, medieval cultures.
U.S. have citizens doing the same thing. We have people sicker that they are.
The whole concept of diplomatic immunity needs to be reworked.

It goes back to 1981 I was happened to be in Kuwait airport due to Iran-Iraq war. That unexpected landing was an experience learned for life. I have seen; how the Kuwaitis treating sorry ill-treating the immigrant workers on their first sight. It was a horrible sight, I could not believe that. Many of them were crying with the insults and the way they were treated in the airport.

No, Kiratis are Magar, Limbu, Rai, Tamang, Gurung, Newar, Tharu and Sunuwar. Brahmin, actually Guptas, who made conspiracy and dictated Nepal. Kirati gave Brahmin and Chetri to live and also teach them to grow rice. Tibeto- Burmese (Kiratis) taught them lifestyle and foods- how to eat, I think Brahmin and Chetri had and will always have small heart and does not want to live with us. Janjati leader is funny word for me because I am an eye of this nation. I have seen 75 Chief District Officers to be Brahmins or Chetris though the area is populated by Kirati ( ethnic groups). I think you need to read the history.

I personally know a couple Nepalese in Afghanistan and they refuse to go home at the end of their year because of this.
As a student of geology, i have walked more than 40 districts out of 75 of my country on foot so far and got the chance to study the geographical, academic and socioeconomic condition of Nepal and Nepalese citizens up to certain extent during my field work. As i know, survival of common people in distant villages is very less affected by such big deals like Sugauli Treaty, diplomacy of India etc.Geographic condition of Nepal has made it more difficult and costly to expand the infrastructures of development in those regions more rapidly . Due to this, development activities became confined to major cities of Nepal like Kathmandu, Pokhara etc. and rest of the country has been leaved as an abandon hut. As a result, state of both absolute and relative poverty was created there. Our fraud leaderships whom i prefer to call "players of emotions" just played with their sentiments and always engaged them in so called "war of social justice" wallowed in the blood since the 1950's revolution and never let them focus on education and business and same thing is still happening here after the formal ending of Maoists revolution.As a consequence, those youths who did not intended to be participated in this dirty game became compelled to leave their homes in the hope of bringing back the happiness from abroad. They worked everywhere around the world as the British army to the security guides in Arabs appreciating all the bitter words and words of admiration from their bosses . But unfortunately, due to some mean human beings, some of them bring back home a huge briefcase of pain and sufferings instead of happiness to their family being covered in coffins and some of them even do not get the coffin and become decayed by Arabian microbes. Some human beings show sympathy to us and some spit over the decaying body of Nepalese. Still we respect all the human beings all over the world. But now, even our society is heading toward the direction positive change.I have found many educated youths working in the field of education, heath, agriculture in the distant villages of Nepal without considering about the facility available there, without thinking that how educated people are there and without begging something from the deaf government and the "players of sentiments", the political leaders of Nepal.If we continue this for few decades, then most probably we will get the least numbers of news of this kind from CNN on the upcoming days which are based on absolute reality. I have already started it. We all Nepalese also have to start this right today, right now. Finally thanks CNN for bringing out this story among all of us.

The Children Welfare Home (CWH) was established on February 16th, 1995. The main aim was, and still is, to provide a place where
street children, orphans and abandoned children could live. 50 children are now under the care of the CWH and they are studying from
nursery to grade 12. Children are accepted from all backgrounds.
The CWH receives no financial support from the government and is not affiliated to any political organization. Instead, it relies
solely on charity and private donations for its maintenance and development. The CWH head office is located in Bhaisepati -4,
Lalitpur and branch office is located in Sauraha – Chitwan. Now the CWH’s building is under construction in Sauraha-Chitwan. The
building is for 50 children. There are separate bedrooms for boys and girls. Bathrooms, classrooms, a conference hall, sick rooms, a
library, a garden, and a playground.
These buildings allow children to play without disturbing the neighbours and provide good and spacious facilities. CWH believes that
it is crucial for the well-being of the children to have a healthy and supportive environment. For this reason, the organization aims
to provide a shelter to children without parents, relatives or guardians, to those who are extremely deprived of parental care, to
those living on the streets, to those who are socially boycotted or have been abandoned.
It also provides them with food, security, general “life-skills”, healthcare, other necessary facilities, and most of all, a sense of
family and belonging. Additionally, the CWH strives to ensure that the children receive a good education. During their stay at the
organization, they all attend private schools until grade 12 and receive support for their vocational training and higher education
where possible.
The CWH believes that it is important for children to become self-supportive, independent, and fully functioning members of society.
CWH has been renting a house since 1995, which is very expensive, facing problems living in renting building beside neighbours; water
etc. Please let me know if this is something that would interest your organisation. Therefore we feel lucky that we have the
opportunity to build the new house in Sauraha – Chitwan, which is under construction. In October 2011 we started the project with a
limited fund and the money ran out. This is why we are looking for new funds to complete
the building.
At the moment we have 50 children staying at the home. We provide all kinds of need like food, medical accommodation, education, etc.
Any help from you will be useful for the children. our focus is to complete the building project, also would like to Request Bus
for transportation and other urgent needs for the children. According to your interest areas we hope that you will find our
situation important. I have attached details of the project copy of the building construction and list of urgent need with this

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
