Lincoln's legacy fights modern slavery

By Athena Jones, CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Sheila White was beginning to feel numb. She had been beaten numerous times by a man who forced her to work as a prostitute on the streets of New York City.

"I done got beaten up in front of the Port Authority in Times Square," she said, a reference to a bus terminal on the city's West Side. "When stuff like that happens out in the open, you really feel like you're not even a person."

White was eventually able to escape her pimp and now works with victims of sex trafficking throughout New York state. But her story is proof that slavery is alive and well in America, 150 years after it was supposedly abolished.

While modern slavery may look different from the old images of plantations, slave cabins and auction blocks, abuse, coercion and manipulation remain the order of the day.

According to the anti-trafficking organization the Polaris Project, hundreds of thousands of people are being forced to work at jobs they don’t want to do - in the commercial sex trade, on farms, in homes, in factories and elsewhere in the United States. They work for little or no pay and under constant threat of violence and even starvation.

Polaris estimates this modern slavery affects an estimated 12 million people worldwide and brings in some $32 billion. Other estimates put the global number of victims as high as 27 million.

White told her story as part of “Not My Life,” a documentary on human trafficking that aired on CNN last year, believed to be one of the fastest growing criminal industries in the world. The film is featured in a new exhibit at President Lincoln's Cottage in Washington, part of a year-long effort by the cottage to celebrate the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation that freed slaves during the Civil War.

"(Lincoln) made some of the most important decisions during the Civil War here. He lived during his re-election here and he also developed the Emancipation Proclamation while living here," said Erin Carlson Mast, president of the cottage, which is a National Trust Historic Site. "This was really an opportunity to see how far we have come as a country in dealing with the issue of slavery."

How far the country has come is a complicated story, as the exhibit, called “Can You Walk Away?” illustrates.

Lincoln's proclamation was followed two years later by the 13th Amendment, which made slavery illegal in the United States. But instances of modern slavery still exist in all 50 states, according to Polaris, which partnered with the cottage on the exhibit.

Polaris was founded in 2002 and named after the North Star that helped guide slaves to freedom along the Underground Railroad. The organization operates a national hotline, taking calls 24 hours a day in more than 170 languages, from people who suspect trafficking is going on in their communities and from victims themselves.

The goal of “Can You Walk Away?” - which will be on display through August 2013 and includes photos and other data on numerous trafficking cases - is to increase awareness of the issue in the U.S. and thereby increase the risk to traffickers of getting caught.

"It's a much bigger issue in the United States than most people understand or realize," said Polaris' executive director Bradley Myles.

"The whole issue of trafficking is dehumanizing and objectifying somebody and saying, “You're not a human being, we can use you like property.” And what we're trying to do is humanize the issue and say this is how to connect with it on a very, very human level."

Victims in the United States span all ages, races and nationalities. A young man named Given tells the story of how he left Zambia to travel to America as part of a choir, hoping to raise money to help support his six orphaned siblings.

Instead of being paid, he had his passport taken from him and he was forced to work for free, with his handlers withholding food and threatening to deport him if he protested.

"We were not getting paid. Our families back home in Zambia were not getting paid as they were promised. The schools that we were promised back home were not getting built," he said in an interview for mtvU's “Against Our Will,” a documentary that is also used in this exhibit.

"I never spoke to my little sister the whole two years that I was in the United States. I never spoke to my brother. I never spoke to any of my siblings, so I had no way to let them know what was happening to me."

Angie, a teenager from Wichita, Kansas, ran away with two friends after trouble at home. The three girls ended up under the control of a pimp who forced them to prostitute themselves at a truck stop in Oklahoma City, threatening to harm them if they did not bring in enough money. Another trafficking victim, Debra, was forced to work 24 hours a day at a home in Falls Church, Virginia, cooking, cleaning and caring for children with no breaks.

Human trafficking is appealing to criminals because there is an "enormous amount of money to be made" and low risk of being caught as long as the community is not aware, Myles said.

"I think it is harder to eradicate in certain ways, because it's already made illegal, and so there's this ecosystem of human trafficking and modern slavery that's developed. And we have to fight that ecosystem, and the ecosystem morphs, it changes, it's very nimble," he said, an acknowledgement that existing laws against trafficking only serve to push the practice underground.

Myles said Polaris is looking for people “to be the eyes and ears, looking for trafficking, and if they can call in and be the good Samaritan to break a case."

"But we're also trying to build a national, systemic response system almost like the national 911 for trafficking, where every single time there's a case, there's a response ready to help in that local community, so that those victims aren't falling through the cracks."

It's really sad. Unfortunately, this was a nation built upon another's misery and though it's changed over time the methods are still the same. Not really about race anymore. It's who you can take advantage of.

That response is just plain unadulterated rubbish, no doubt coming from a european barbarian!
The VAST MAJORITY of human societies DID NOT PREY on their fellow citizens.
The evil behaviors of the beastly barbarians from the arabian and european peninsulas, DO NOT represent the historical behavior of the vast majority human groups on the planet.

Of course you would know the above factst; because you are just another 'child left behind' by the LIARS & IGNORAMUSES who run the USA mis-educational system.

Hey Agnim, what about Egyptian slaves? How many lives to the Mongol conquerors ruin? There was a thriving slave trade in Africa before Europeans or Arabs showed up. Chinese history is full of not only slavery but other human rights violations that built of the country at the expense of the poor. People were trafficked in southeast Asia as well.

Don't let your blind racist hatred of white people color your perception. Study up on history. Kajin's comment was absolutely accurate.

Agnim – You should really research stuff before you say it. A is absolutely correct in his assertion that most cultures took slave of all colors pre-1700. One other thing as it pertains to slavery in North America. Europeans did in fact provide transportation of African slaves across the Atlantic and sold them in North America. But Europeans didn't get off their ships and catch those slaves, they simply showed up to auctions run by Africans selling the slaves. I know everybody saw the TV Mini-series "Roots" and from then on it was the gospel. But "Roots" was a sanitized version of slavery in North America. The fact is, Whites in America wouldn't watch a show where their race kept people in shelters that looked like a barn for dairy cows, and Blacks in America would have screamed bloody murder if anyone suggested their own ancestors imprisoned and sold them into slavery.

If you are able to post to something like this (have the time and resources), then your life exploits others in some way. Just try to keep track of where all of what you use everyday comes from and you will see. That's the reality. Deal with it.

Then try to minimize those negative impacts, if you care at all.

you say that this is the time for people to take advantage of someone. its hard to believe that society has come to such a place that people have to be so unkind. it seems that if we don't look to take any part of life for granted maybe good can start its way back into the light.

The 1st slaves in Mississippi were Indians (The Natchez Indians drove out DeSoto's survivors only to see their King die a Spanish slave.). But, they had a tendency to run off because they knew the land and a better life. The Spanish brought the 1st African slaves to their Mississippi teritory because, they did not know the land and, to them, it was better than their slave life in Africa...therefore, they did not run away. Slavery is just as wrong today as it was then. But, why does no one demand the nations that brought Africans to America as slaves to accept responsibility for it? In Mississippi it was 1st the Spanish, then the French and then, the British. And, for the record, the average wealthy land owner in Mississippi was against the Civil War. They rightly say it as an end of their way of life.

I for one, born to parents who were tenant farmers (modern slaves), believe there should be a loud outcry in America...the land of the free....over this issue! The fight shouldn't have to be led by people like Lucy Lui.

My recent former boss, who recently and formerly was the CEO of a public company that was a Ponzi Scheme, liked to take guests to a "honey trap" in the Hollywood hills run by a nice Russian guy with no apparent "business" job or profession. The Russian guy has a huge mansion. They also had a Madam there, and a lot of very pretty "very very young" girls to choose from. If it's in a Motel 6 it's traffiking, if it's in a mansion in the Hollywood Hills, apparently it's just an "Executive Perk". Many members of the Russian Mafia in Los Angeles make a good living in the extortion business. What better tool is there for extortion than a video of a businessman with an underage girl? The girls must be very young and probably don't speak English and are isolated. Any hot 18 to 22 year old girl in Los Angeles can easily make $1,000 a night by hanging out at a bar in a fine hotel. "Madam" is a nice word for jailer, and the nice Russian man....perhaps he is really a Wanna Bee Fleiss?

Lincoln would be a democrat today. He wouldn't be able to abide by the GOP mantra. Which is: Turn all the Old, Sick, Poor, Non-white, Non-christian, Unemployed and Gay people into slaves. Then whip them until they are Young, Healthy, Rich, White, Christian, Employed, and Straight. Or until they are dead. Then turn them into Soylent Green to feed the military.

He's not funny but it's partly true at least the part about Lincoln. Heck, Reagan wouldn't even be able to get elected today and he's the conservative hero. He raised taxes numerous times after his first term. And did he remove the regulatory agencies (or for that matter significantly scale them back)? Nope, most Agencies stayed the same or grew.

So basically at the point you have a Capitalist (Reganomics), who raised taxes and generally left regulation alone. If you took the name Reagan out, listed everything that was promised, listed eveything that was done, and asked the GOP if they would vote for a person like this, MOST of the base would say no.

People in cities don't avoid helping in situations like this because they are afraid of a lawsuit, they avoid it because they are afraid of getting murdered.

I live in Philly, and 6 months or so ago, there was a big story about a guy who was riding a public bus downtown and saw a woman smacking the hell out of her kid. He told her to stop or he would call the police. She called her baby-daddy's henchmen and they shot up the bus in public in broad daylight. That's why people don't say anything.

And do you recall who it was that shot up that bus? It wasn't a conservative, I'll remind you of that.

NoInvolvement: your argument (fear of lawsuits) is not correct - even before lawsuits for such things existed, people in cities tended to let horrible things happen without interfering.

You want another example? A news agency recently did a test, with a 9 year old kid. She was on the street, and the man she was with forcibly picked her up and carried her off. All the while she screamed "Help me! He's not my dad! Help me!" It took TWO HOURS OF FILMING to find someone willing to intervene.

Good god, another half-wit heard from. On his first day in office he was dealing with succession and civil war, all triggered by the fact that an anti-slavery president had been elected. The last thing he needed was to lose a few more states by freeing the slaves by proclamation (which was dubious legally anyway).

        February 28, 2012 at 2:09 pm |
      • Buk Lau

Lincoln was not pro-slavery, but he was not an abolitionist. If the Civil War was really all about slavery, then Lincoln and the federal government could have just bought all the slaves their freedom. That would have been cheaper than fighting a war.

As usual, the biblical critics know more about the Bible than its followers. The bible does condone slaves and does instruct them to obey their masters (sorry if that doesn't fit into your tune of 'Jesus loves me this I know...')
        Leviticus 19:33-34
        Genesis 34: 1-4
        Duteronomy 22: 13-19
Just a few to begin with. Research the hateful book you believe in for once instead of blind commitment.

Leviticus 19 33 “‘When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. 34 The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

        Genesis 34
1And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

2And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.

3And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.

4And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.

        Marriage Violations
13 If a man takes a wife and, after sleeping with her, dislikes her 14 and slanders her and gives her a bad name, saying, “I married this woman, but when I approached her, I did not find proof of her virginity,” 15 then the young woman’s father and mother shall bring to the town elders at the gate proof that she was a virgin. 16 Her father will say to the elders, “I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he dislikes her. 17 Now he has slandered her and said, ‘I did not find your daughter to be a virgin.’ But here is the proof of my daughter’s virginity.” Then her parents shall display the cloth before the elders of the town, 18 and the elders shall take the man and punish him. 19 They shall fine him a hundred shekels[a] of silver and give them to the young woman’s father, because this man has given an Israelite virgin a bad name. She shall continue to be his wife; he must not divorce her as long as he lives.

Where in the world does it talk about slavery in these verses? I was just curious myself and i don't see anything.

I'm sure many of these people are/ were runaways. Tired of the scene at home, not having any "freedom" . This can be used as a incredible teaching tool for teenagers thinking they have it so terrible. Again, it's all about the choices we make. Don't get me started, I had an abusive neglectful upbringing, but the thought of running away was not an option. As bad as it was at home, I knew it could be worse, so I stuck it out and I became a stronger person for it.

People within our own government ranks find power over others satisfying and are among the higher paying customers for these services, often favoring children. It's disgusting, but as long as it is part of every level of society, it will be next to impossible to eliminate. Kudos to the organizations that reach out and help those who are or have been forced into such a life.

I am interested in news stories about the cases mentioned here. I am having trouble finding the stories of slavery in Falls Church, Virginia and the story of Sheila White in New York. Can anyone point me to news stories, police reports, court cases, etc.?

All I can find are advocacy organization stories which, while compelling, are not explaining the facts of the cases. Given the tendency of news stories to go back and forth between slavery and trafficking in a shifty fashion (people are often willingly trafficked) and the history of white slavery scares and such, I am interested in knowing the facts behind these stories. I have yet to see anything to convince me that slavery in the United States is any more than very rare, isolated incidents.

And obviously those doing this don't want the attention. Frankly, I think slavery should carry the death penalty. Take these sickos out back and let Berretta take care of them.

I am so sick and tired fo hearing about this alleged "modern-day slavery". These pelope may be abused in some way, but the blacks in this country should be up in arms about the use of the term "slavery". (Note – I am white.) Slavery of blacks before the Civil War was 1,000 times worse than anything going on today. These people need to buck up and get their own life in gear. No one returns "slaves" to the "owners" any more. there are laws against it and 99.9% of Americans would help you get help immediately if you ran up to them on the street and said "I am being abused and held captive as a slave." Get off your lazy butt and run. Run to the nearest police station, church, hospital, firehouse, etc. and ask for help. End of story.

f and get real ::: You obviously have no clue about modern slavery and what these people are dealing with. I can't stand when people feel that modern slavery is getting in the way of their own agenda with racism and slavery of their ancestors. How tragic for the slaves today.

      1. "The blacks" are not the only people in human history to have been enslaved.

      2. If you honestly believe that these people can just run to the police station, you are pathetically and profoundly stupid.

      3. There are, in fact, people who return slaves to owners. If you knew anything about modern slavery you would not need me to tell you this.

      4. This goes without saying, but you clearly have only a basic grasp of the issue. Please be so kind as to keep your ignorant mouth shut until you have educated yourself. You're embarrassing yourself and you're making people like me lose a little bit more faith in humanity every time they hear someone say something like "Those people who are tied up in basements and being repeatedly raped should just count their blessings...the REAL slaves had it worse!" or "Those people who are locked up in a barn and forced to perform farm labor under the barrel of a gun should just walk to a police station and solve their problems right there, the lazy brutes!"

      Really? 99.9%?
According to your numbers, that girl must be really unlucky, when she was beat up in public all the witnesses must have been the 0.1% who would do nothing to help her.

It is possible. By my calculations there is a 1 in 9801888648295370000000000000000000000000 chance of 20 witnesses all being part of the 0.1%. That is at least ten times the probability of Rosie O'Donnell passing up a buffet line.

Do some research on Lincoln people. It may shock you as to his real feeling on slavery. Also MLK's daughter says that her father would be a REPUBLICAN today. Some of you people are absolute morons, quit begging the government to free you from "economic slavery" and do it yourself!! So this guy from Zambia, Given was forced to work for free, with his handlers withholding food and threatening to deport him if he protested. I don't understand what was his motivation for staying in US if he was anyway not getting paid here?Getting deported was good option isn't it?

I never trust these kind of people playing victimized. There is always a hidden truth which they don't speak...no one can force u do something u do not want to do..there is no slavery in this world!!

Wow. Just wow. It is amazing that you can actually stand to put that down in writing... "No one can force you to do anything you dont want to do". Pain is a great motivator, as almost anyone in that type of situation will tell you. I am glad that you have lived such a sheltered life that you have never had to experiance doing something you didn't want to, but please do not expect that everyone has had such an easy, care-free life.

What was his motivation to stay? Good point. I'm sure the whole time he was just sitting on a trust fund ready to buy a first-class ticket back to Zambia...oh, and to find a way to get himself a replacement passport for his that was taken away, because that would be a very easy task for a foreigner with no in-depth understanding of American agencies and legalities, even if that foreigner was actually broke and didn't have said sizable trust fund like this guy surely did, right?

The mind truly is a terrible thing to waste.

I find it strange that when the issue of slavery comes up, it always comes down to the building of America and Africans. As if slavery was invented right then and there. It has been around since the beginning of civilization. Every culture had slaves. Don't get me wrong, I am not condoning it. I'm just saying, you can't have an honest discussion about a subject without truth.

Whether you realize it or not, we all have quite a number of slaves working for us. How can you figure out how many ?

    http://slaveryfootprint.org/

It will take you about 5 or 6 minutes to complete the survey. My current slavery footprint is 41 slaves working for me.

When the CEOs and boards of directors of large companies decide to outsource thousands of jobs at a time, they are sending these jobs to what are largely slave labor factories and increasing their pay massively every time you see this happen. We may all have slaves working for us involuntarily, but Wall Street has some of the biggest active slavers on the face of the planet.

It's worth noting that the boy from Zambia was "enslaved" by his own countrymen, his own people. I remember the story was reported on when it happened. It's pertinent because when African slaves were forcibly taken, transported, and sold as slaves - in the US and elsewhere - it was their fellow Africans who were more often than not running the front end of the market. It's true in Mexico, where women sell little girls (a recent news story). It's true in India and Pakistan, where children work as slaves in innumerable capacities. And it's true in the US, where immigrant communities often have their own ugly underworlds. The word "slave" is so race and class laden that it's important to remember people prey on their own.

Nowhere in there does it say he was enslaved by his own people. He was already in the USA...I'd say it's safer to assume his "handlers" in America were Americans.

John – you racist DIMOcrats truly are a scary bunch. You can't defend your argument so you project your racism onto others by playing the fraudulent race card. You should be ashamed of yourself for harming the true victims of racism in the future.

Your boy Strom Thurman was a DIMOcrat much of his career just like the other DIMOcrat racists like Robert KKK Byrd who was a huge player in the DIM party all the way up until his death even though he was a grand wizard in the KKK.

How sad but would expect nothing more from another DIM racist such as yourself that can't deal with the fact that you put an economic illiterate, community agitator with ZERO executive experience to the highest office of the land and then blame racism because he is a failure instead of his failed ideological nutty theories that have proven to be failures around the globe and throughout history and yet you DIMS continue to push the same failed policies over and over and over expecting a different outcome.....insanity defined – IE a mental disorder!!

The American civil war was a war between 2 slaves systems. The old slave system in the south and the new monetary slave system in the north – both a European invention given to America. Would you need a loan from a bank if you owned slaves?NO. Look at history with a fresh eye. As they moved to end the old slavery system in Europe, the new monetary system flourished and was exported to America (coincidentally it was the Europeans that brought the old slave system to north America). After all, why just have black slaves when you can enslave everyone? The slavers in the south generated products- the north sold these products for money to Europe – the Europeans refused to do business with anyone that still employed the old slave system (conveniently forcing the monetary slave system down Americas throat – or no business) – hence civil war. Our friends the brits , with their empire helped spread the monetary slave system 400 years ago after they adopted it to fuel their wars. Why do you think they tried to tax America(they had interest to pay on all those war loans), which led to the Boston tea party and the war of independence. Can you live without money?NO. Do you even have the freedom of an alternative choice to do business or live your lives?NO.That is slavery. Slavery was not made illegal in America- only a form of slavery was made illegal while legitimizing another. Just like the old slaves of the past – some did not know any different then to accept it – just like people today -what would we do without money? So today we now have billions of slaves on this planet – enjoy the collective servitude. I wonder if America can innovate something other then the by gone reject apparatus from a still feudal Europe? Perhaps America will have to wait for a new European perversion before the innovation can happen. And America thinks they got their freedom – keep dreaming the American dream or are is it a nightmare? I guess that would depend if you are in debt or hold debt over another.

Technology advances and improvements have made it easier to create sensible and interactive games. These kinds of entertainment video games were not really sensible when the concept was being attempted. Just like other designs of technologies, video games too have had to evolve via many many years. This itself is testimony for the fast development of video games.
