Hopes for better lives lead to slavery in U.S.

Editor's note: This is part of a series on the CNN Freedom Project on domestic servitude. Read more about some in domestic servitude who are so desperate to escape, they take their own lives. And get an update on the nanny in domestic servitude who suffered extensive burns when, she said, a Gadhafi relative poured boiling water on her.

(CNN) – One was sold by her impoverished parents, the other willingly left her family to become a nanny. But both found years of their lives turned to domestic servitude before finally finding freedom.

CNN's Martin Savidge tells the story of Isabel. Her mother sold her into slavery at around age 7 to a Taiwanese family who later moved to the United States in an upscale southern California neighborhood.

So as other children went to school, Isabel cooked and cleaned. Her bedroom was the garage, her bed the floor. Her food - whatever the family didn't want, often spoiled or soured. And there were the beatings, she says, often with a spatula and once, when her owner accused her of drinking a cup of tea, a toilet bowl brush.

Isabel finally met someone who helped her escape and is now in her 20s and trying to learn what many her age have already mastered: driving a car, ordering at a restaurant, understanding money. No criminal charges were brought against the family who brought Isabel to the U.S. from Taiwan. But she has settled a civil lawsuit with that family and is no longer in touch with them. Watch more of Isabel's story above

CNN's Gena Somra reports on Laome, who was 17 in Nigeria when she thought she was getting an education in the U.S. in exchange for becoming a nanny for a wealthy Nigerian American woman, Bidemi Bello. Instead, she says, she had instead become a slave. Bello, Laome says, instilled that fear in her right from the beginning, abusing her almost every day.

She later escaped with the help of friends, and Bello was brought to trial. Found guilty of human trafficking, Bello faces 11 years behind bars. After that, she will be deported back to Nigeria.

For Laome, she says that with the trial behind her, she is finally free.

My name is c.c. siulapwa and I attend a high-school in Healdsburg California.
In 2010, our school held an event in which we raised up enough money to free two slaves!
It was an exciting, and satisfying experience. So much that I wanted to do it again. And so we acted again. And thats when
a friend of mine and myself, decided to write a song, to protest against modern day slavery. This is what I wanted to share with you. Here is the complete song along with video. Please check it out! It feels good to fight and stand for something you believe. Thats we made this song.

    Thanks bye

You would NEVER say that to someone's face. Why do you sit behind your computer making rude comments to people? Does it make you feel better? Why not trying to be positive and see how it feels. I bet it will make you feel even better.

I agree with everyone on this comment chain. John you are indeed an idiot making light of something amazing that the HS kids did. However to everyone else. Don't dignify this guy with a reply. Sad pathetic people like him get off on trolling these forums and posting incendiary comments. It's probably the only source of attention in his life. What we really should be doing is practicing the art of shunning. Do not post an angry answer. Just ignore. He's probably a sad, angry, unfulfilled man in life, let him be one here too. Until he and others like him learn to interact in a humane and dignified manner that's the best way to get rid of these creeps.

Sorry C.C. I know your heart was in the right place but buying someone out of slavery only perpetuates slavery. Likely, the person you paid went and got more slaves. Buying their freedom only reinforces this behavior to human trafficers.

Theodore, your cynicism is appalling. These young people are doing something worthwhile. What should they be focused on? Figuring out how to climb the corporate ladder? Sit around in the back yard firing off their guns and shouting about how they are "proud to be an American" and whining about immigration? Yes the problem of human trafficking is never-ending. But that doesnt mean you dont continue to battle it on every front, every day.

I saw this report about the young girl from Taiwan who had been sold by her parents to a family that came to live in the USA, and still the slavery continued, which still exists in the USA. How could this family get into the USA with a young child that was not theirs, and what happened to this family now living in the USA...NO MENTION in the report about this either, they should be prosecuted and removed from the USA, but perhaps they had money so as to bribe corrupt officials, which is common in the USA....George

It is common for those kind of domestic slaves to be "adopted" by the family who has them, so when they moved to the states, she probably moved legally with them as an adopted daughter. Once in the states, and freed, there was little or no proof of her internment, so she couldn't bring criminal charges against her (essentially the court only saw her as a child who didn't want to do "chores") and without concrete proof of the beatings, there's not much they could do here either.

So, instead of bringing a case they couldn't win against the family, the woman's lawyers probably recommended to her to file a civil suit instead (which she did) and that way she at least received some compensation for her time and is now free to pursue her life. It's unfortunate, but that's the way the court system works– innocent until PROVEN guilty, and without concrete evidence, there was no proof. At least she is free to live her life now.

There is also the fact that many states have cut back on their court systems because of budget cuts, to the point that some states would take years for any trial. She probably brought the civil suit because at least it might help her get some schooling. At her age, she needs lots of schooling or she won't make it. I do hope that these people are deported; just the fact that there is no record of this young woman in the school system should be a clue that she was abused and not allowed to be educated; PROVEN by the fact that she struggles to count money.

In her case, though, she could at least prove that she never attended school.

*Haitian workers earn only 6 cents for every pair of Disney “101 Dalmatians” outfit that Disney sells for $20. Disney pays its workers in Haiti about 28 cents an hour. A woman in Salvador working in a sweatshop makes 12 cents sewing a GAP T-shirt that sells in the US for $20

Nice story. I especially like how you make it look like the only ones paying those wages are Americans. Except - oops! The minimum wage in Salvador is $5.56/day for apparel assembly which is $2.56 more per day than the average agricultural worker there. The minimum wage in Haiti is $1.73/day. Your information is outdated and incorrect. Companies may pay the bare minimum but they're not dipping under the legally required minimum wage. Of course labor laws aren't great there yet so I'm sure there are abuses, let's focus on those instead of outdated information.

It is easy to say that Disney pays workers in foreign countries little to no money but in comparison to other jobs in those countries the pay is usually higher. I will reitterate I am not defending them but the day that person quits there would be 100 more people lined up for that job. The people in India that most think are morons stealing are jobs are on the same situation. The majority if not all are college educated and had to go through a vigorous interview process to get the job. Check out Tom Friedman, he has written many things on the subject.

Susan, it isn't the lower-priced goods, but the tremendous mark-up. Every time you walk into a store with shelves packed with goods, think a minute. Those goods sit on the shelves a bit before they are sold, and it is the TIME that costs so much. To pay workers, employers take out loans, which are paid back with INTEREST for all the TIME that the goods sit on the shelves. I worked in such a loan company 30 years ago; all items have this problem: "net 30 days," "net 60 days," "net 90 days." It COSTS. Cut out the lovely store (I include everything from boutique to giant discount store or upscale department store) and these workers might actually be able to earn a little more. Remember the catalog stores, and how much money they made for awhile? When people stopped shopping that way, it was kind of a shame, because those stores sold union (?!?) made items, made in the USA. Now nobody can afford to, because stuff sits on retail shelves all over America, which shoppers insist must look just so on the shelves or they won't buy. And look at most towns in America: filled with duplicate stores; where do you think all that stuff comes from?

I’m a Taiwanese and I’m so shock about the video.

But sadly I have to say, slavery might be part of Taiwanese human nature.

I felt like crying when Heidi Thi says “she knows she’s value and has potential, and can do things on her own.” In Taiwan, most parents won’t tell their children they’re value, no, mostly just pushing the children study really really hard or “You are a bad child, you’ll be a loser”.

“Don’t play, or you’ll be a loser, go study and get good grades, after entering a big company, then you can play.” That’s how parents would say.

But after entering the company, we have no time to play – actually, we don’t have life.

Employees are force to work 12~18 hours per day, sometimes even in weekend, but without overtime pay. Companies force their employees to sign the agreement - “I’m willing to work for my company without overtime pay.”

Two people died because of working too hard in my company, but there’re much more than two in the company called “HTC”. So many HTC workers died that people say there’s not only sweat but blood in those cell phones.

And how about iPhone? The component in iPhone is made in Taiwan. And the CEO of that component company tells his employees “If you are in good health, that means you are not working hard enough.”

That’s the life in Taiwan. No one say we’re value, and we are so afraid to be a loser.

I hope Isabel can stay in USA, for her own good.

That's the same browbeating approach that the conservative right takes here in the USA. They insist that if you are not rich you are a loser and need to work harder. Work hard for the sake of working hard – work hard to make someone else rich.

By no means is it as bad as it is elsewhere, but given enough time those will use the self-hating mentality of others to exploit them. Make them feel worthless for not working hard enough and then offer them more work. It's pure evil!

Oh Please! Though admittedly the Republican Party can at times be "tone deaf" when it comes to the concerns of the poor, many, many charities are run by churches in this country and no conservative that I know (including myself) would advocate the enslavement of people or even the "browbeating" of individuals who do not work hard enough. There is another side to the coin, however: Many people simply do not want to work and abuse social welfare programs, which is infuriating to those of us who are working, paying taxes and struggling to make ends meet. As someone who lived in a very poor neighborhood when attending graduate school, I have experienced such abuse of welfare, Social Security, SSI, etc. firsthand.

I asked around in the company where I worked. Everybody had health problems, almost all brought on by the conditions they were working (in the USA). Some people were told that they shouldn't have hobbies because it would take away some energy; the hobbies were not that difficult or long lasting, just an hour of exercise a couple days a week, which people should do for health. The higher-paid jobs had health problems too. Whether paid for overtime or not, everybody worked overtime and was worn out. But when people are fired or laid off, they are worse, because then they don't even get health insurance, so when they get sick, they just die.

"By no means is it as bad as it is elsewhere"

Yet. But it will be. WIthout armed insurrection in the country the corporate overlords and corrupt politicians will continue to steal the wealth of the country and everyone else will continue the steady decline into poverty. Or if you are already impoverished you'll be able to move on to homelessness and extreme poverty. The people running the US have zero incentive to make the situation better and every reason to keep the situation as it is.

gregson. not sure how we got from slavery to people abusing welfare programs but.. what is sad is that republicans have done such a great job of referring to welfare and similar programs as riding the gravy train and taking advantage of the system that people are too ashamed to use the programs when needed. I know people right now that need the assistance and refuse to apply because of people like you. What is shameful is that children have to go untreated for health issues because you people spread so much hate. I bet everyone on here knows someone that truly needs the assistance but will not apply for it because all the propaganda that people taking assistance are losers. on the note about republicans and write offs.

ANYONE can get into the US unsuspected (that is the problem with having open borders). If you control the borders, maybe this kind of thing would not happen. All of you who think we should let anyone in who "wants a better life" should look at this and see that open borders create nothing but problems. We need control of who goes in and out of our country.

Wouldn't the family have to prove that the child had learned an equivalent education through testing if "home schooled?" HOW does a child remain hidden from local authorities, unless immigration never talks to schools and communities? THAT is the real mystery.

This has to be the greatest example of injustice in the world today. Children being bought and sold into slavery should not be happening in this day and age. The only way that this will ever stop is if the guilty parties are sent to prison for many years. I think 25 years in prison should be the minimum and in most cases, life in prison. The victims have been given a life sentence, so their abusers should suffer the same.

I am sure that when these parents sell their children they are led to believe that they will be given a better life, The real crimes are commited by the people that buy these children and then use and abuse them and treat them as property. I can almost forgive the parents, but the people that buy them have no sympathy from me. They should be locked up for ever!

Give rights to women and girls, and populations go down to manageable levels. It's been proven. In some of the places mentioned, girls are married at very young ages, expected to have ten kids, and then there isn't enough food, so maybe some kids are sold. Give the girls rights and education, and family sizes are much smaller.

I just want to be clear that I think that the parents are victims too. They are obviously not knowingly selling their children into slavery and abuse. They are doing it because they believe their children will have a better life.
When i said the guilty parties should go to prison, i meant the buyers of these children. However, if the parents knowingly sell their children and know they will be abused, they should be punished too. But like i said, I doubt they were doing anything but trying to get their children a better life.

This woman was not a slave in the U.S. This woman was the victim of a crime. There has been no slavery in the U.S. for 150 years or more and virtually all of them worked in agriculture. Now the poor illegal Mexican's work in agriculture which is very, very weird. In my humble opinion, they should not be doing that in the U.S. It will only cause more trouble.

Not a slave? are you kidding me?
      Definition of SLAVE
1: a person held in servitude as the chattel of another
2: one that is completely subservient to a dominating influence

It is appalling to me to see some people comment on this story and try to deny it and worst try to make it into a border issue with Mexico. Are you serious? What does a Mexican agricultural worker have to do with this story? Go to Fox news to post your anti-immigration views, this is not the story to comment on that.

By your definition a victim of a crime is a slave. I think you are confused. If somebody grabs you and holds you against your will, that is not slavery. That is kidnapping. It doesn't matter what they ask you to do while you are kidnapped. There is no slavery in the U.S. Look that up for yourself. I'm just trying to help you understand that.

Something the Tea Party would be proud of. They stress LESS government but they'd sure like to have MORE slaves. Sort of like stressing LESS government but asking for MORE jobs. Sort of like stressing LESS government but asking for MORE intrusion into a woman's right to choose. Well, more or less, less or more, the Tea Party has to go such as in "gone with the wind."

Solution: Move out the big city, stop thinking you are the only ones hit by a world decling economy, and move out to the small cities out and away from your comfort zone just for once, and also stuck on a broken record. Think outside the box, and go to the smaller cities, there's plenty of work there! As long as you like manual intensive work that pays $30 or more an hour, and your house rent costing you about $500 a month for a whole house.

It's funny what counts as "troll" on CNN and what doesn't. You can say things against the President of the United States that have nothing to do with an article, and that is O.K. But, (and I'm going to be banned from CNN for a week, just watch), try saying the words "Muslim," "Christian," and "Jew," in any context. People are far too intelligent and our knowledge is far too advanced for slavery to be taking place anywhere in the world.

I am very disturbed that no charges were brought against the people who abused Isabel. If there is insufficient evidence for slavery, how about truancy or child abuse? CNN's slavery project also include bringing to light these "slave owners". Show their names and photos– especially if they live in the US. These people should be made an example.

Child abuse is easily proven. This child received no education: neither in the public schools or home-schooled. Children have a right to an education in America. This is a no-brainer; why can't the legal system figure this out, are they protecting this family? Are they diplomats? Business owners? Paid off everybody in the state? She might not be able to show bruises, but unless she is mentally disabled, her lack of education is proof positive that she was not cared for by her "adoptive" family. And yes, lack of education should have a stiff sentence for any family that doesn't take time with their children for school work, because lack of education is what drags all of America behind other countries.

This is such a sad story, the Taiwanese family who later moved to the United States should of been arrested and thrown into jail and then deported, just like the other story with the Nigerian women. At least the lady who brought her here is in jail for 11 years and then will be deported. Anyone caught doing this should have their citizenship stripped and be thrown out of the country.

Any child living in the U.S., "adopted" by another family, must have an appropriate education. Doesn't anybody know that? It is so easy to prove that this family acted illegally and inappropriately to this child.

Yes, well, interestingly, a similar thing happened to me, only I wasn't sold into it, I was born into it. My parents decided I would be the family servant (in fact I was called "the little maid.") and used regular whippings and beatings to keep me at my tasks. I did get to attend school, but only because they knew that do keep me out would bring the attention of child services. But evenings, and weekends, I was serving a family of seven with cooking, cleaning, ironing, etc, while my parents sat in front of the television. Everyone at school – teachers, counselors, etc – knew the situation and about the beatings. It was accepted, though, that short of murder, a parent could do anything they wanted to a child. But parents beating children is legal and common in the US. If a parent wants to enslave a child, they can do it with impunity. This woman's tormentors were able to do what they did because children ARE slaves. If beating children were outlawed, they could not have gotten by with as much, nor could my parents.

There are many enslaved people in our country. But because they are live-in domestics, appear in public with their owners, or are trusted to do errands for their owners, we view them as free people. They are not. A woman on Marco Island in Florida enslaved a man from her native central American country for years. Without education, citizenship, money, or a means of transportation other than walking, what were his options? Her American neighbors tolerated and excused this situation as a cultural matter, not one of dignity, human rights, and liberty for the enslaved man.

The report makes it sound like the US is guilty, when in reality, it is the ways of people in ither countries that is at the heart of the issue. Real US citizens helped these people gain their freedom, proving once again that America and its citizens are still the greatest force for good in the world.

I agree that most people in the US have their heart in the right place. But immigration and deportation laws make it hard for people to come forward. What about the lady that everybody knows is a slave but would be deported back to Africa if anybody told? She would be in a much worse place. If she could be freed and take a more dignified job here, that would be much better, although the last few years there are so many Americans out of work that is a difficult subject too. But I'm sure that most Americans really would come forward and free any slaves they heard of if they felt that it would be in the best interest of those slaves. However, ANY child in this situation is not in danger of deportation, and would benefit by people reporting on it. The woman who said she was beaten at home didn't know that there are laws against beating in America. Others here don't know that in America there is a right to an appropriate education. The more we know, the more that human rights will be protected.

I also had a friend from Africa who was sponsored by a family in Minnesota and was imprisoned in their home until she escaped by running across a field to a neighboring farm where she was taken in and lived there as part of their family for 2? years. People who say there is no enslavement in America are either stupid, or just plain unaware. I seem to remember a case about a wealthy family from the Middle East who had kept a girl, who looked like from Phillipines, Malaysia, Thailand, and beat her, and kept her chained in a cabinet as punishment. This is just horrific and this is what needs to be protested.

Isabel gave herself up for the sake of her baby sister at the age of ~7. Amazing. As adults, we seriously underestimate the love, compassion, philosophic and intellectual capacities of children. Fortunately, Isabel's infancy & toddler-hood preserved & developed the spark we're born with. Her Mom must have loved, nurtured, and taken good care of her during the critical, early phase of life.

Although her treatment is tearful to contemplate, it, along with her innate selflessness, will be the thing that propels her and her life's mission to success. It's easy to see that she posesses a loving soul & warm heart.

The human greed has never been diminished. If there's a void un-checked, slavery is surely used by some greedy people. It doesn't matter it's this 21 century or BC, and doesn't matter if it's whites, blacks, Asians. It's all the same of the human greed. We need to keep fighting and make sure it's not un-checked.

I think it should go back to the old ways. Let us have the slaves back! Would you be called a slave if you worked for someone which feed you, clothed you, put a roof over you head in which you asked for no money. If that is the case then slavery has never left the US. Maybe that is what this county needs to get back on its feet and become the county it was. Remember this country started out with slaves and was fine until the liberals had to go and change it all. Since then this country has went down hill.

Slavery is common in the US. Just go to Manhattan. So many people from India bring their own slaves into this country, make them work 24/7, pay them pennies on the dollar, and feed them very little food. They get away with it, so it's not going to stop anytime soon.

The civil lawsuit part irked me because it shows there is no criminal prosecution. They should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for kidnapping and physical abuse. If they are citizens, sentence should be life with no parole. If they are resident aliens, I'd keep them in prison until they are really, really old and unable to care for themselves, then deport them back to Taiwan where they certainly will get no mercy. We need some real American justice on this one!

The girl did house chores, and so why is this news?

Do the research and facts. If she slept in a garage she would have gotten carbon monoxide poisoning and died. Many home owners have their garages turned into bedrooms, so she basically had the biggest room in the house.

I grew up in a foster home since I was 5, and I did many chores cleaning, and then later cooking. When I turned 8 started doing more manual intensive labor work. If I didn't obey I’d get beat with a wooden paddle with holes in it. It only takes one long duration of multiple whippings to be obedient.

Fast forward to today, I am a responsible person who puts my life in order by prioritizing and that's first by paying bills, and everything else is second.

Note to the wise in the big cities if you don't work in a big building then you are a person living in a big city working for the person in the big building, so don't complain if you work at star bucks, or deliver fast food, do your job and shut up or ship out. When I mean ship out, I mean move out of the city moron, and stop complaining. I'm talking to you protestors for March for Wall Street! You live in the big cities and you think you are the only ones hit by the economy? You are wrong small towns and cities also suffer, but guess what we do instead of protest? We re-invent ourselves and get another job, and if we can't find a job we search for a job online and move to the smaller towns where there is work. The cost of living is expensive, so if you are unhappy working for the big building executives, just move out and go to the small cities. See how they will function when there is no more lower class society to make their fast foods, or lattes.

Only time I would move to a big city would be if I got a job in one of them big buildings, but I can't I’m in the army.

On another third note totally off the subject I want to be the first to start the "Pull up your pants party". I'm tired of individuals instead of living the American dream they choose to have their pants around their ankles, I know most Americans grand parents worked hard, and going back to the 1940's Americans worked a lot and got a little. Today Americans work less and get a lot, so stop complaining and crying. If you don't like the job you have or the job you don't have, then move around America and get out the big cities and go to a small town who will hire you!

Another challenge is if individuals can do what they do to their cars then can you do that to your bills, and pay your debt? Why have a Chevy caprice classic worth $42,000, and then foreclose on your home? We need a rap artist or a celebrity or some rich figure head (not me because I make 35,000 a year) to tell the youth what to do. One example would be a new trend of rappers rapping about doing home improvement projects instead of tricking out their cars. Because the truth is parents are to blame and while parents blame the teachers the discipline starts with you the parent! If you are over the age of 25 and still ride around town with three kids waiting with your girlfriend while you drive around town with your music blaring and still trying to do pick up a new girlfriend, then you don't need to be doing that to create more kids like you who are not living the American dream.

Why do we have Lindsey Lohans, Kim Kardashians, and Paris Hiltons in the news and media? This corrupts the youth and helps to promote bad role models. Crash course for self destruction influencing the youth!

The only person worth mentioning is Bill Cosby who spoke about indifferences and the work is not done, but that if Martin Luther King was around he would tell you the same thing Bill Cosby said about being responsible adults.

So I say pull up those pants, get a job, save some money, don't buy a new phone or gadget or gismo every three months, but pay your bills, and if something is left over put it in the bank. Buy yourself something during Christmas and your birthday. Remember that it starts with you! Yes I do agree that it takes two to tango, so there is always two to blame even in a one sided argument.

God Bless anyone to read or listen to this. I am not rich, but I try hard. Remember we work less and get more than previous Americans who worked more for less!

Please do not follow Gerry's advice of moving to smaller cities. There is no work in my smaller city, or rural areas around it, and people are moving from here... to the big cities, or anywhere they think they can get a job. One of the saddest things about this Depression (please don't belittle it by calling it a "recession") is when I see my friends moving away.

Gerry has had a hard life, but he doesn't get it: this girl slept on the floor. And you don't die of carbon monoxide poisoning when the car is not running.

The article said she filed a civil case, so as long as she fought back legally she should be okay. I wish her luck, and welcome her to America. Sorry that the possible welfare system didn't check up on her adoptive family. My guess would be that a theory that rich people probably don't fall under the radar of the welfare department if you’re a child in a wealthy family. I know that the key is assumption is the failure by welfare department, but what about teachers?

I actually ended up going to a possible adoption home after I left my foster home, so I started fighting with kids at school during recess. The teacher noticed my changed behavior and popped me a question as to asking if everything was alright at home, and I told her I was being abused, so the teacher called welfare department of child services and had my case looked at.

In a psychology course a teacher would learn the small signs of either acting out, or being complete quiet or shy. These signs should alert the teacher while the Taiwanese girl was growing up at school or in the community to where she was.

The Penn State case is a prime example leading others to come out now. Hopefully the victims will be vindicated, and the victimizer brought to justice.

In this country, nothing surprises me anymore. The GREAT United States of America has blossomed into a nation full of wasted crack-heads, pot-heads, cocaine / heroin / meth-amphetamine addicts, arsonists, pedophiles, burglars, serial rapists, murderers, etc. Oh sure, there are millions upon millions of successful businessmen such as myself, however, this nation's justice and political systems are a COMPLETE JOKE !! And I don't care whether you're a right-wing Republican / Tea Party supporter or left-wing liberal Democrat / OWS supporter as I am registered as an Independent. Bottom line – We are NOT the same nation we were at the end of WW II – a proud and respected Super Power of a Nation. No, today, we are the absolute laughing stock of the world. I was born an American and I shall die as an American; however, I am not as proud to be an American today as I was many years ago when the rest of the world used to look up to us.

For all the people that are accusing C.C.'s school of paying off slave traders, did it occur to you that there are organizations whose mission is to rescue slaves? And there is a cost to that rescue? (Supplies, transportation, clothing, a new home, etc.) My guess that it is unlikely that C.C.'s school paid off a slave trader, and is much more likely that they raised enough money to give to one of these organizations that would cover the costs of rescuing two slaves. By the way, I found this information on the first click of a web search. (

It would be nice if he could get a painkiller like marijuana, but we are law-abiding citizens, and don't do it. But those who want to put people in jail for marijuana might think twice about it, because there are diseases like cancer that could use it; only prescribed and regulated (and taxed appropriately). Slavery can and does happen, through a 'legal' process labeled ADOPTION . . . believe it – from the remnants of one who survived the ordeals of same.

I'm sorry for your suffering. For any child who is treated as a slave:
      1. Beating is illegal in the U.S.A., under the "Mondale Law."
      2. Every child in the U.S.A. has a right to an appropriate education, which means that if they don't send you to school, and they didn't give you the same education through home schooling, you have your rights violated.
      3. Children must have an appropriate amount of sleep every night for their age level.
      4. Chores are good to know how to take care of your house in the future, but refer to 1. no beating and 2. must have time to do homework with 3. enough sleep. Not every family can afford to take children to special outings, but you should have a little time off every week.

11 years is not enough, sending her back to her country is not also a good idea. This monster will still create another crime in her own country. She needs a life time jail. Slavery is not acceptable. People like her are not accepted in any kind of society.

Tolerance of illegal immigration is the root cause of these cases of human trafficking. CNN is culpable due to its support of illegal immigration via its biased reporting. As a result all Americans will have to bear the social burden due to this misdirected compassion.

Most people commenting on these blogs are rednecks, so I dont have any high hopes for changing minds, if they have any.

CNN is getting worse than the tabloids. "Growing up a slave in the US" leads people to believe that this happens all the time in the US and is some how allowed. I am glad that this girl was brought to the US, because you can bet every thing you own that if she was still in Taiwan, she would still be working for this family. It's a shame that it was caught so late, but your headline of slavery in the US will be twisted, and used out of context through out the rest of the world. It doesn't matter what the story is about, it's the headline. Shame on CNN.

We have the right to the freedom of speech but , when its about name bashing there seems to be a misunderstanding and a word from a wiser one and speaking from one opinion and not calling names, we always had SLAVERY, its always been a part of life here in the US. It will always be here. Why cannot people get the full picture and why are so many mislead? Why, they need the tools to see through it and to find out there are many ways but my, yours, them, those and whatever, so thats the scoop 🙂

I must say........there has always been slavery in the US. Its just hidden and most of it is in our sweat shops in the good ole New York City. It will always be here........and its only going to get worse over time. That is what our country wants, since they dont care about what resources come into this place or how we live. Lived long enough to see the changes and where its going but where it will end...........just another repeat. 🙂

For high school students to feed up two slaves may be a way to misleading the relationship between the parents and their only one child, while the latter is much more like some pet in the family rather than any child servant. Such game playing should be restricted by the school headmasters since the students do not have necessary background social experience and the problem of gap discrimination around the whole world may become unbelivably gigantic. There is no commercial value, nor any political meaning, esp. in the democratic America.

The family that enslaved her should be sent to jail.

This story should not even be about her finding her mother – it should be about punishing the evil people who treated her worse than an animal. How about underage enslavement and torture?

How can those evil people be allowed to get away with child abuse?

I am a Taiwanese. I have studied and worked in the USA for the past 13 years. My family is still in US, although I currently work in Taiwan. My prays and thoughts go along with any immigrant that is seeking better lives in the USA but instead is abused and deprised of the basic human rights. As a Taiwanese, I feel so shamed and shocking about this news that the "wealthy" (and filthy) Taiwanese family that brought Isabel to the U.S. and enslaved her. Whoever the person(s) who enslaved her should be brought to trial and prosecuted under the justice system, and then be deprived of the U.S. citizenships because these immigrants have already violated the laws that they have pledged to abide by when they become U.S. citizens. I am hoping that we care more about our surroundings, more similar stories will then be broght to light to shock those outlaws that are still abusing and enslaving minorities.

Pandering to hate seems to have become an American pastime.

As a liberal, I'm duty bound to accepting reality, even if it scares me spitless or revolts me. Hating people is a disease.

But there ARE a few people in this world who can make me wish that birth control could be made retroactive.

I'm thinking bin Laden, Ahmadinejad, Mugabe, Kim Jung Il, and a few other maggots we hear tell about, some of them who even call themselves Americans. I tend to want to include all our racists, absolutist theocrats, neocons, etc., but shall name no names because it wouldn't do any good. There are too many maggot-lovers who have the right to vote for the haters and other maggots. Clear thinking no longer has much value to Americans, and it's cost us a lot – and will cost us more, without a doubt.

Human nature seems to make most people resist any temptation to make the best of their minds. Learning is just too much work, and going along with a mindless crowd is simply too much fun to give up. It's unfortunate the founding fathers failed to take that into account.

That is now becoming a concern, when people adopt out of their race. Some people do want to give a child a better life, and others are simply looking for a slave for other purposes. What is really sad is that other people know what is going on, and don't do anything about it.

As as the maxim goes, details make or break the argument.. And it could not be more accurate right here. Having said that, let me reveal to you what exactly did give good results. The text is definitely rather powerful which is probably why I am making an effort to comment. I do not really make it a regular habit of doing that. 2nd, whilst I can easily notice the jumps in reasoning you make, I am not confident of exactly how you appear to connect your points which in turn help to make the actual conclusion. For the moment I shall subscribe to your position but hope in the foreseeable future you connect your facts much better.
