Director sees horrors, miracles of slavery

Atlanta, (CNN) - Across the world, man's inhumanity is secretly on show wherever human traffickers prey on those who are vulnerable. But there is also hope and inspiration in the stories of survivors, and the dedicated, but under-resourced, anti-traffickers.

For four years, Robert Bilheimer documented their stories in Europe, North and South America, Asia, and Africa for the documentary "Not My Life" which airs on CNN International this weekend.

CNN sat down with the Oscar-nominated director to talk about the horrors of human trafficking and the uplifting tales of the survivors he met while filming.

CNN: Who are human traffickers?

RB: Human traffickers are lazy, amoral, essentially small-time criminals who earn their profits on the backs, and in the beds, of our planet's youth.

They are modern-day slave traders. They commit unspeakable, wanton acts of violence against their fellow human beings, and are rarely punished for their crimes. They are the great plague of the 21st century.

CNN: Is there one example you remember most from all the horror stories you heard about traffickers and their crimes while filming "Not My Life?"

RB: In the film, there is an interview that describes the following practice in an Eastern European country.

Before shipping a new recruit of girls to the capitals of the west - Rome, Paris, Madrid - the traffickers would round them all up in a room. They would pick one girl, bring her in front of the group, and then summarily execute her: either burn her alive, or a bullet through the mouth. This is the way these particular traffickers would say to the other girls: "Don't try to escape."

There are thousands of stories like these, in different contexts, all over the world. Unspeakable violence is integral to the practices of human trafficking and modern slavery.

CNN: You describe traffickers as small-time criminals, and yet this has become a very big-time industry.

RB: Correct. The number put forth by the experts is about $32 billion a year globally. This rivals other criminal industries, like the gun and drug trades. But in this case it's human beings who are the commodity.

CNN: So the profits are huge, but "organized crime" is not the main player like with drug cartels, for instance.

RB: Precisely. That's what makes it so dangerous and elusive. It's basically a vast network of clever "sweet-talkers" as the traffickers are often referred to by their victims.

Where you find a poor family in Ghana, there you find a sweet-talker offering a desperate mother a couple of hundred dollars to feed her family and teach one of her boys "a trade." The boy disappears overnight and becomes a slave, forced into labor of various kinds.

Where you find a poor fishing family on the banks of the Mekong river, there you find a sweet-talker whisking an eight-year-old girl away to work in a brothel in Phnom Penh, where she is raped and sewn back up again, so that men from Japan and the United States will believe, because of her bleeding, that she is a virgin.

Where you find a girl in the heartland of America who might be having "normal teenage problems," as Angie says in "Not My Life," there you find a sweet-talker who looks like the boy next door - and sometimes is - ready to give that girl a ride. But the ride is not home. It is three states away to a truckstop, where the girl is forced, on pain of death, to perform dozens of sex acts every night.

Natural disasters such as the earthquake in Haiti? A feast for traffickers.

Generational poverty such as we find in the poorest states in India? Bread and butter for those who practice indentured servitude.

The list goes on and on.

CNN: Any successful business - and this is what you are describing - operates on the law of supply and demand.

RB: Take the sexual trafficking of young girls. If you didn't have millions of men all over the world willing to pay money to have sex with children, you wouldn't have this massive problem we have now. The demand is relentless. And as the U.S. anti-trafficking ambassador, Luis DeBaca, says it's not just sailors off a ship anymore. It's the beat, beat, beat of airplanes landing every day.

It's also, I might add, the click, click, click of fingers tapping at computer keyboard keys. Human trafficking is ultimately a story about the way the world is.

CNN: How do people come back from being trafficked?

RB: I am not an expert in psychological, physical, or social rehabilitation, so I can only tell you what I have observed after four years of being with hundreds of victims and survivors.

What I have seen is miraculous. There is no other word for it. After the all the injustice, suffering, and cruelty, these horribly abused children have shown a resilience, spirit, and ability to heal and "come back", as you say, that I honestly do not know how to explain.

But it is deeply inspiring. It gives me the feeling that in the age-old battle between good and evil, good will triumph in the end, even though we have a tough road ahead. This is what I have learned from the journey of "Not My Life." The human spirit is a powerful thing indeed.

I will never understand how an adult can look into the eyes of these beautiful children and hurt them so badly. They are treated worse than an animal. It makes me sick to think that nothing happens to these people!!! And if it does it is a very short sentence and they are back doing it all over again. Where is the protection for these children. The evil in this world just sickens me, I don't understand where are the police in these countries, is everyone just for themselves and no body cares about these poor little children that are having their lives taken from them before they even have a chance to live.

The police are probably part of the whole rotten system, being paid, getting rich and they're no different from the exploiters themselves.

As long as there is demand, there will be depraved people willing to commit the crime. I think as a society we should be dilligent about exposing this behavior – publicly humiliate and then imprison the johns. But of course the cops are in on it so that will never happen. *Sigh*

Police, try politicians and especially Bureacrats. I say with focus on bureacrats because they can literally create false paper trails and leave none the wiser. They have more power than the police and less visible than politicians, power without public oversight, dangerous combo.

I agree with you, Roxanne; it horrifies and sickens me to think that one person can do something like this to another. I think that the biggest horror of all is that there are people sick enough to want to rape a child and willing to pay big bucks to do so. I think the penalty needs to be much harsher when these folks are caught. Not just the traffickers, but the "clients" too. These people need to be in jail FOREVER.

The article says it's not organized crime. Oh, yes it is. It's a business just like any other. If there were no money in it, this industry would not exist. Also, since it is such a huge money-maker these days, the countries that don't punish as harsh as they should are the ones that are making money off of it too. But the article hits the reason behind this cruel industry – LAZY and AMORAL (and I would add GREEDY) poeple. They are the foundation of historical and modern-day slavery. No one wants to do the work themselves. What's scary now is that most young people today are lazy, selfish and unprepared to do the work necessary to support themselves – a great breeding ground for more human traffickers. This is truly about good and evil. Because if everyone would work together and help each other – life would be better for everyone. But as long as their is greed, laziness, amorality, there is no hope for us to ALL GET ALONG.

Stephanie – I just want to say – that – we can't allow ourselves to give up like that – there will always be greed, laziness, etc – but we have free will and the power to choose – so all I want to say is – there is hope – because – good is simply better than evil – and – the people committing these atrocities are the minority – a very very small minority in comparison to the global population – so – we also have that on our side.

Another thing comes to mind. We expect "things" to do all the work for us – just push a button and our food is cooked, machines to sweep floors automatically, a remote to start our cars (something that only takes a couple of seconds to do ourselves). How lazy we have become. We are a species that continues to invent things to make our lives easier and more convenient. As much as I love technology, I have to remind myself that it could be the very thing that destroys humanity. Young kids don't want to do their chores, prepare their own food, or pick up a book and read. They want to be entertained without any effort. We want the big house but don't want to clean it. So we get things or slaves because of laziness and are willing to pay big to stay lazy.

The western countries should be ashamed of themselves.

No wonder the poor countries hate the western countries and wish to wipe out their economic and political systems.

Wake up you dirty humans of the west for its you who are bringing about the curse of terrorism and other natural disasters on the humankind as a consequence to your greed and cruelties.

Well, let me put it this way. The western world had taught the other nations how to use people for their advantage with sweet talks . Human traffickers are an extension of western style marketing and your artificial way of living. If you look at any non western country you could see that people in those countries are more straight forward and forthcoming about things. Also, look at how you western people go ruin countries. From Equador to Panama, Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt, Libya and countless other countries were ruined by you guys. They may not be all ending up in "rich western countries", but one thing is true, and that is that Western countries, especially the greed and corruption infe'sted USA, are the main leaders in producing the fil'th which they label as entertainment, which they also spread allover the world, making untold wealth for themselves, while it is obvious that through the gar'bage they spread all over the world, they poll'ute it and people they influence... . Yet they don't think nothing of it, and they demand that under the "free speech" they have rights to express their fil'th! There was always evil in this world, but never have just the ordinary people been so obsessed with lust and perv'ers'ions as in times we live in!
Because if such evil is allowed to be unlea'shed, and if it can exist without opp'osi'tion, even claiming it's rights to exist, then what hope do we have to stop the nightmare that's plag'uing our world, and ruth'lessly swallowing the innocent in it's grip?
No courts, nor any other human attempts will be suffi'cient to root out this evil, till the issue of po'rnog'raphy and degrading ex'ploita'tion of human beings cease to have a sta'tus of legitimate industry. This country has caused much harm in this area, particulary through Media, and it is fit'ting that the Media stands up against it. Thanks, CNN, for effort put in through those programs

The slave trade was alive and flourishing long before the West even existed, it has been a Muslim tradition for thousands of years. Do some research before you unload your hate on people who actually banned slavery and point a few fingers at the real culprits who still practice it today.

What won't surprise me any is if your country is one of the ones willingly selling children to other countries. Is this wrong? Yes. Is the evil only on where they are shipped to? No. It is also in the countries they are taken from, by political leaders or parents that sell their children. Evil is everywhere, we can talk and point fingers all we want, but nothing will be changed until the people that own others are arrested and the people in power where people are taken either A)(if innocent themselves) Crack down on such crimes in their nations or B)(if guilty) Arrested and tried for treason against the people of their country.

I don't think you can blindly blame everything on the west. I am in Mumbai as we speak and the last time I looked (yesterday) there were thousands of kids on the street begging and working for nothing or next to nothing. I agree there are many that exploit including the west, but actually apathy towards the poor is just as bad...and on that score the US is slightly better.

You have a point; that western countrys have exploited other poorer countries and even used the Christian faith to justify many atrocities. As an American, I'm deeply ashamed that my country allowed slavery to exist, and broke treaty after treaty with Native Americans as well. But You must know that slavery was practiced in ancient times, even by your own people. Nobody is totally innocent. The point is, no decent person, regardless of who he or she is, or where he or she is, would even think of raping children. It's depraved and sickening. That there's even a market for that kind of thing is an offense against god and mankind.

these traffickers should be summarily executed by any nations, There should be the international law, by which any nation o r any national authorities who find these traffickers, should be executed without giving them any benefit of doubt. So goes with the drug traffickers and dealers. I do not understand why these animals need to be allowed to use laws meant for humans, to protect themselves. So should be the sickos who make use of innocent human beings and children for their lust, should be executed for crime against humanity under international law.

Heartbreaking stories. but there is a subset of victims in our society that are made slaves to psychopaths or sociopaths without being sold, those are the "compliant victims" and it's full of them, these are kids abused and women abused and all the people that fall prey to "sweet talkers", there is no justice for those victims that number in the millions. the only justice comes when the abusers commit a crime, but they are masters at exploiting our psychology, they create "trauma bonds", cognitive dissonance and dissociation in victims, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. (check please those terms if you don't know them), the professional traffickers, pimps and modern slave owners are just the high end tip of the iceberg. Humanity is flawed unfortunately and in some cases really flawed, their genes should not go ahead and it's up to society and not nature to make sure this doesn't happen. the civil societies just need to make sure those are crimes punished with harsh sentences, not only on the supply side but also and most important on the demand side. Punish the johns, but really punish them, punish the abusers, there is no room for those people in our society especially because abused victims unfortunately become abusers themselves. abuse destroys self esteem , confidence, future possibilities and capability to feel empathy, it creates damaged human beings for the most part, don't be fooled in thinking people that get out of abuse return to normal, most of them remain permanently scarred, remember that most suicides don't leave behind a corpse but an empty shell.

Especially with the rapid increase in these awful crimes, one does wonder if the recent availability of drugs to “increase male erections” might have at least some effect. These drugs are easily available on the internet around the world, even used by curious young male teenagers to boost their prowess, by all manner of conference-goers, etc. Has anyone bothered to do a study on how many of the men who perpetrate these crimes take such drugs, or why men from seemingly “solid” social backgrounds would resort to such torture?

    Who are human traffickers?
They are the sc'um of the earth, which pollutes even the air that they breathe! They have forfeioted their rights to exist, which are reserved for humans and beasts, but they are lower even then the beasts.... and whatever sentence this life brings them as punishment, no matter how gris'ly, it would be small comparing to the evil they spread with their cur'sed lives. But one thing they can be sure of, is that the sentence they will get in next one will be tailored to fit them precisely!

This culture (even in the Royal Circles) from the most affluent to the common or sub-standard levels of the culture have brutalized women and female children since their origin, thousands of years ago. Interesting that I see a common hatred of these crimes against humanity, yet division due to one's country of origin, community, religion etc.
Stop blaming each other - this is clearly not a crime limited to or caused by a single nation or community. It is time to root out the traffickers and the users of trafficked victims and eliminate them from society whether it be a life sentence or captial punishment.

You may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. (Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT)

This subject is truly a horrible story, BUT the country of Communist China has enslaved whole nations. The magnitude of Mr.Robert B.'s film is tiny potatoes comparet to the story of slavery in Tibet, for example. If he wants to be a hero of oppressed and enslaved people, he should take his cameras where the slavery occurs on the magniture of whole former countries in Southern and Western now-China.

Commie China is all the more horrid because it is now a modern country compared to, say, African ones, and Commie China has leaders who should know better and who have the power to release the enslaved. Instead the current supreme leader of Communist China displayed his power by killing and jailing Tibetans... thus showing the ruling Party that he is the man to take the job of enslaving the whole of Commie China.

My comment is like other business this is all about supply and demand. There will be no incentive for supply demand. The suppliers are the worst kind of human and so are the customers. And all in the in betweens. There is law and there are law enforcers, but still. To the customers who comes to East Asian countries (or other parts of the world )to feast on the victims especially children, may you die miserably one day.
That's how disturbing this is to some people when we read news like these. All we can do is pray for the people who went extra miles to fight these crimes and help the unfortunate.

Some steps that can be thought of to bring down these incidents in future

    1) Population control in poor countries/families

    2) Proper accounting of each child born and involving the local community keeping track of the people in their community

    3) ensuring free primary/secondary education and education with emphasis on developing job oriented skills and compulsory attendance in local schools

    4) making local families aware of these trappers

    5) law has to ensure that the culprits are given severe punsihments and if they are caught with the same crime do not let them be free after a short sentence

    6) this is happening at this scale only because of poverty where the families are struggling just for basic needs, population control, government policies at grassroot level can, and with the help of local leaders and voluntary organisations at least at the SUPPLY side of this trade can be brought down

Absolutely! People need to be educated and have a right to the basic necessities: a decent job, decent food and water, and a safe place to raise their kids. If these needs could be met, children and young people wouldn't become prey for these kind of monsters.

Slavery has existed throughout history, more of less, depending on the general economic situations; sometimes less sometimes more.
Right now we are faced with the greatest imbalance in wealth, both within the population of any one country, as well as between countries. Hence the occurrence of high incidents of slavery; I would venture to say, in economic value, probably greater than that occurred during the trans-Atlantic slavery (putting all the world salve value put together today).
Best way to eradicate slavery is to provide economic balance. I am pro capitalism but modern day capitalism has no morality and leads to great imbalances in wealth because it is amoral. Let's work toward a humane and moral capitalism and we'll see the diminishing of slavery automatically. When bankers are allowed to throw people out of their foreclosed homes instead of making terms easier for them because it would be "morally hazardous" to give the borrowers a second or a third chance, it sounds like we are also slaves.

The SUPPLY originally comes from a very financially backward family who is struggling just to have one daily meal, and who does not have the ability or opportunity to earn a decent livelihood, this is something that can be eradicated if every reasonably well off people in the world contribute in such a way it reaches the unlucky people who were born on the wrong geographical location on this earth.

But DEMAND is an entirely different matter which needs to be treated psychologically also dealt with stringent legal action and when caught committing the same offence then lifetime imprisonment.

I don't blame on any laziness or advanced technology that leads to it, because i think those are not the causes that people are being forced to be slaves or trafficked. It depends on how they're being treated! Workers are not slaves.
I've never realized such horror things have truly been existed! So i hope this power will be formed strongly to fight against those evils!... N may they'll be punished by what they have done...

YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THAT OUR LAWS AND SENTENCES COMES FROM THE MALE MAJORITY, THAT IS WHY THE WORD RAPE-WHETHER CHILD OR ADULT HAS VERY LITTLE MEANING OR COMPASSION TO THEM. THEY MAKE AND BREAK THE LAWS-SO THE PUNISHMENT HAS TO BE LIGHT BECAUSE ONE DAY THEY MAY GET CAUGHT DOING THE SAME THING.

again, another night i shall lie restless in my bed, knowing that the horrors are not imagined and that there is little to nothing that i can do but PRAY against the evil nature of this planet... what can i do? i am a little person, and i am terrified to go out there, anywhere... i am terrified in my home, i am terrified for the children, animals and people... my silence against the evil and my noise against the evil doesn't stop it... i am surrounded by ghosts who have survived and i feel their sobbing and their anger and their tears... can the whole of Creation, just for ONCE, stop it's insanity and we can have a quiet, peaceful day? They say there is no rest for the wicked, yet, also, those who fight the wicked cannot sleep, and we all end up looking haggard and tired and tomorrow comes again and the same problems arise over and over... I guess to ask The Gardener what to do about the strangeling weeds, and He would say: pluck them out by the roots... No matter how many people are jailed or killed, the evil remains, so, WHO IS GOING TO FIND THE ROOT OF THE EVIL HERE and eradicate it from the planet? Is the insane answer going to be that we should all become BREATHETARIANS? Well, every great civilisation has come and gone and this one, surviving so long, will reach it's end, too... and a new one will spring up... i'm still terrified, and that won't change... i fear my fear will bring on more fear... but rather I am cautious in my comings and goings, than a statistic ... the basic laws that govern HUNGER and THIRST will always be in place, from microscopic bacteria to the biggest lifeform you can think of... and that hunger and thirst needs to be quenched, MUST be quenched – for it is too painful a way to die... Let me take my terrified heart to bed and hug myself tightly until blessed sleep takes me to worlds where there is no hunger and thirst and I am what I am without reproach for my king and country, or the colour of my skin... i wish you well in your daily lives and may your struggles be few... and if there is anything i can do, i do it, and i do it to the best of my ability, no questions asked... there, but for the Grace of God, go I...

CNN FREEDOM PROJECT SHOULD FOCUS ON ATROCITIES BEING CARRIED OUT IN SAUDI ARABIA AND MIDDLE EAST. AGAINST BONDED LABOURS, HOW FOREIGN BONDED LABOURS ARE ABUSED AND THEY LIVE IN INHUMANE CONDITIONS. HOW THE WAHABI CULTURE PROMOTES SLAVERY, WHICH IS COMPLETELY AGAINST THE PREACHINGS OF ISLAM. WAHABISM IS NOT ISLAM, WHERE PEOPLE ARE OPPRESSED, WOMEN ARE OPPRESSED. WAHABISM IS NOT ISLAM, PLEASE DO NOT MAKE WAHABISM AS A FRAME OF REFERENCE TO AUTHENTIC ISLAM. ISLAM DOES NOT PREACH OPPRESSION OF ANY HUMAN BEING OR DOES NOT PREACH OPPRESSION OF MUSLIM WOMEN. ALJAZEERA IS TURNING HYPOCRATIC TURNING BLIND EYE TO THESE REALITIES.

WAHABISM IS NOT ISLAM, WAHABIS AND NAJIDIS CONSPIRE TO HIJACK ISLAM AND GIVE BAD NAME TO ISLAM.

Wahabs have money, power and influence. That's all they need to carry on. Junk to be sure, but there are worse in this world. Slavery was offically abolished in Saudi Arabia in '67, that's 1967. Its still evident, look for black children with Arab families out shopping.

... just another thought: prisons are NOT to be made into 5 star hotels, or places where criminals can live a better life than the free people... It's not right – they have committed a crime against humanity, and they need to suffer: not be able to rise when they want; work without pay; be free labour to the people of the country; have no human rights... I feel sorry for those who ARE in fact, innocent, and caught up in jails, but, the majority of the inmates do not deserve to have a 5 star lifestyle and be able to go on strike... How did they treat their victims? Was it fairly? Did they give a damn about anybody's human rights? NO, so therefore, they deserve to have a sentence in jail... The fighters for human rights for criminals need their heads read...

Ethiopia, one the main adoption countries in the world, recently suspended adoptions. Reason: rumors that children were being used for body parts in the middle east and India. The adoption officials in Ethiopia are not suspected, but reacted in a responsible manner. Terrible, and I can't imagine a doctor doing this.

This only shows me that the most cruel, brutal, and merciless living thing in the planet are humans.
Humans will do everything that takes to earn money or any kind of benefit.
The only difference between "good people" and "bad people" is whether you consider others like you consider yourself.
I just want those traffickers to know:
As one sows, so shall one reap.
God knows whether you've been good or bad.
No one can hide from death. You shall receive what you deserve.

It is okay to be poor.
It is okay to be homeless.
It is okay if you're not rich.
But it's not okay if you hurt other people for your benefit.
You shall see, in the very end, what you have gotten youself into.

Another thing: The most warm and loving creature in the world are humans.

I broke our first jar opener. The Container Store was the only place I could find that had the same type of jar opener. It is the only one that my wife can use. The jar opener was here in a very short time. Hurray!!!! It is once again easy to open jars.

We have OXO opener, but it slips a lot. I can't seem to grip the jar lid if it does not have a tread. So, it is quite effective for some lids (especially the plastic ones that are softer and permit a true grip), but it just does not grab a smooth metal top, especially one that is large.

I manage a vape shop directory site and we have had a posting from a vape store in the United States that additionally markets CBD product lines. A Month later on, PayPal has contacted use to say that our account has been limited and have asked us to remove PayPal as a payment solution from our vape store submission site. We do not offer CBD product lines like CBD oil. We solely provide marketing solutions to CBD companies. I have visited Holland & Barrett– the UK's Reputable Health and wellness Retail store and if you take a close look, you will see that they offer for sale a fairly comprehensive stable of CBD product lines, particularly CBD oil and they also happen to accept PayPal as a payment solution. It emerges that PayPal is applying twos sets of rules to different companies. Because of this constraint, I can no longer take PayPal on my CBD-related website. This has constricted my payment possibilities and presently, I am heavily dependent on Cryptocurrency payments and direct bank transfers. I have consulted with a lawyer from a Magic Circle law practice in London and they said that what PayPal is doing is completely against the law and inequitable as it should be applying an uniform benchmark to all companies. I am still to talk with yet another attorney from a US law firm in The city of london to see what PayPal's legal position is in the United States. Meanwhile, I would be very appreciative if anybody here at targetdomain could offer me with alternative payment processors/merchants that deal with CBD firms.
