Georgia woman sentenced to more than 11 years for human trafficking

By Moni Basu, CNN

ATLANTA - Bidemi Bello will spend the next 11 years in a U.S. prison. After that she will be deported back to her native Nigeria, her luxe life in suburban Atlanta decidedly finished.

Bello, 42, was convicted for bringing two Nigerian women to the United States and forcing them to work in her plush home as slaves. U.S. District Judge William Duffey Jr. sentenced her to 140 months in jail Thursday.

Bello apologized to her two victims, present in the Atlanta courtroom to hear firsthand their abuser's punishment. Bello also apologized to her prosecutors, said U.S. Attorney Susan Coppedge.

"We are very pleased with the sentence," she said. "I think it fits the facts of the case."

Those facts amounted to "shocking modern-day slavery," said Brock Nicholson, the special agent in charge of immigration and homeland security investigations in Atlanta.

Bello had promised the two young women, identified as Laome and Dupe in court, and their families that she would send them to school in the United States, according to court documents. Instead, she beat them and abused them emotionally.

At her trial, her victims testified that she beat them if the house were not clean enough or if they did not respond fast enough to a crying child or if Bello felt they had been disrespectful. She used a large wooden spoon, shoes, electrical cords and even her bare hands.

One of the women took a picture of her bruises with a disposable camera.

Bellow lived in an upscale home with many bedrooms. But the two women slept on the floor or on a couch. They were not allowed to use the shower or eat the food they cooked. Instead, they were forced to eat that was spoiled or moldy. Laome said she often threw up and at least on one occasion, Bello made her eat her vomit.

Laome was only 17 when Bello plucked her from her home in 2001. Dupe was 20 in 2004 when she came to the United States. Both traveled on fake passports.

Neither was sent to school as promised.

All of this was going on as Bello applied for and obtained U.S. citizenship. She lost that citizenship in her sentencing Thursday.

Laome eventually escaped by hiding in a car. The driver covered her with blankets and sped off while Bello was at a party.

Dupe managed to save $60 and called a cab that drove her to a church.

A federal jury convicted Bello June 10 on eight counts: two counts each of forced labor, trafficking for forced labor and making false statements in an application to become a U.S. citizen, and one count each of document servitude and alien harboring.

A phone call to Bello's attorney was not returned Friday.

Globally, an estimated 12.3 million adults and children - 56% of whom are women and girls - are the victims of forced labor, bonded labor and sex slavery, according to the U.S. State Department. The trade puts approximately $32 billion into the pockets of traffickers each year.

Coppedge said she was sure similar cases exist in Atlanta and elsewhere in the United States.

"Unfortunately, yes," she said. "I do think there are others."

Her office urged anyone with information on a human trafficking case to contact the Atlanta FBI at (404) 679-9000.

During segregation the racists were Southern Democrats. Martian Luther King was a life long Republican and was his son. At the end of slavery during the 37th congress Republicans voted to free the slaves and faced fierce Democrat opposition. I will be the first to admit in the last 60 years the party has moved in the wrong direction, but there are efforts underway to take our party back.

Truth, you do realize that in the time period of which you speak the Democrats were the conservatives. It is not in the name of the party, but the philosophy. I am a progressive and as such I would have supported Lincoln because he was a progressive in that point in history. Today, Republicans are the conservatives and Democrats are the progressive party. How are kids getting out of schools without learning basic US history?

@Truth Get with the times. That was true a long time ago, but it changed in 1964 when Barry Goldwater reached out to Southern racists under the guise of "states rights," setting a trend that Nixon and Reagan capitalized on, forever ruining the GOP's status as "The Party of Lincoln." If you insist on being a neocon tea-bagger idiot, at least be a well informed neocon tea-bagger idiot. Better luck next time.

      • Nah

        pasta: ...continued

Third, Nixon's absurd Southern Strategy was predicated on getting "votes". As he himself admitted, he figured Republicans would never get the black vote, and thought he could falsely entice disaffected southern Democrats to vote for Republicans. Nixon's strategy was stupid, dishonest, and it backfired, but it was hardly founded in racism.

Fourth, Republicans continued to push for civil rights legislation even after the 60's. In fact, the last major piece of Civil Rights law - the 1991 Civil Rights Amendments - was passed under the first Bush. And you know what those amendments did? They expanded remedies, causes of action, and damages for women and minorities who suffered, for instance, discrimination in employment.

And why was it necessary to pass the 1991 Amendments? Because, ironically, the "liberal" wing of the Supreme Court kept reading the 1964 Civil Rights Act ever more narrowly.

        October 14, 2011 at 8:42 pm |
      • Nah

        pasta: Retrying to post this.

First, Goldwater's position against the 1964 Act was not predicated on race, but on state's rights. That is, in his view the Federal government did not have the power to enact sweeping legislation under the Commerce Clause, when that legislation's connection to interstate commerce was attenuated at best.

        October 14, 2011 at 8:48 pm |
      • Nah

pasta: And for the second portion:

Second, considering that Republicans wrote and passed - along with the moderate Democrats - the 1964 Act, they continued to be the "party of Lincoln" through 1964, regardless of what Goldwater did.

It's ironic that you tell someone to "get informed" when you know nothing yourself.

Its a little funny to read the replies to this post. While it is a fact that most blacks vote Democrat and perhaps it is more likely for a Republican to be in favor of slavery (not sure this is a fact), the finger-pointing based on stereotypes (and the backlash for using stereotypes) in an effort to desparately tie this woman with a political party is a bit amusing. As if whatever party to which she belongs would be exposed as in favor of slavery or villified by this women's action. I mean the logic is pretty funny. "I'm a liberal no way would i treat someone like that" to prove that the woman was a Republican was one of the best.
This should have been an easy topic for a majority of us to get behind; but instead the important issue falls to the side in the name of pointless political squabbling to cast the "enemy party" in a poor light. Well done.

Republican in support of slavery? Dude, whatever you're smoking – get off it. Please name me one, just ONE republican of any merit, or political power of influence who supports any such notion or belief.

        October 14, 2011 at 9:01 pm |
      • hmmm

This whole post is based on the "stereotypical" political party member and aligning the woman with that stereotype. Some stereotypes were based on facts and some on speculations (for the Democrats, the steroetypical Republican would be more in favor of slavery). I based this on the basis of comments in the post. I was only trying to state the stereotypes being portrayed, not side with any of them. (I could have said that the Republican stereotype was speculative; but assumed that "not sure if this is a fact" comment indicated that the validity of the claim was questionable.

The fact remains that very few on both sides would support this woman's action. The political squabbling over what her political party she belongs to (and the finger pointing) is hillarious as it serves no purpose but to cause division on a topic that we almost all agree on.

This is true. It is important to note, however, that though there are more slaves than ever, a smaller percentage of the world's population is enslaved than at any point in history. The situation is actually much better now than it was in the past. It is just that our world population is so much larger that even a smaller percentage can be a greater total number. Also, unlike in the past, most forms of slavery are illegal everywhere and now must occur under the radar. This just goes to show that progress can be made and should continue to be made.

Your ignorance is plain as day. This woman deserves far more than 11 years – politics have nothing to do with it.

It's DISGUSTING that people hide behind a little anonymity on comment boards everywhere – yet they would never dream of saying such things to the face of a person they work with every day, whom they probably have no idea what their political leanings are.

We'd resolve a lot more of our problems if hate and politics took a back door to kindness and pragmatism.

Doesn't she know there are web pages where you can find people who are willing to be slaves? They are very submissive and enjoy being slaves. There are all kinds of s&m ads, just go to one of those sites and find some submissive people you can tie, torment and have work for you. You can also find dominating people that will happily train submisives into complete house slaves. Just do a searh for b&d or s&m personals. At least that way everybody wins and you won't get arrested becasue your "slaves" will always be happy.

conveniently, the ones who seem to forget that throughout the hisotry of America, are the blacks. What happened during our beginnings as a country was hideous, but to be a modern day black person, and continue to try to ride that lame old horse is beyond pathetic. It screems "wah, wah, wah"
Dear Black America: There is no conspiracy to keep you down, because quite frankley, the average white person is too busy trying to keep their own heads above water, and have been doing so since at least my entire 52 years, to find the luxery of free time to actually get together and come up with plans and methods and ways to keep you down!!! Geez, really, do you think you are that freeking special that white people take that kind of time out of our work, and family lives to perpetuate some ridiculous scheme like that??? How paranoid is that? how egocentric and ethnocentric are you?

Why don't you research how RICH Jessie Jackson is for all the benefit he has ever actually parlayed to you? Or Al Sharpton? Are you living thier lifestyles, or are they just making bank off of you? Who's keeping whom down? Why don't you learn about how districts where you live are re-worked so that they remain DEMOCRAT blocks. How do DEMOCRATS affect you? By making sure you vote as they always TAUGHT you to vote. They don't believe in your rights. Get a grip, get educated and stop believing that you are actually exersizing the FREEDOM you ACTUALLY have in this country. God almighty, get off the white people ass!! Own your situation and IMPROVE it. And no, that doesn't mean riot in the streets, or send out more freaking rap artists...geez, for the days of real talent in the black community: I miss it, don't you?

At her trial, her victims testified that she beat them if the house were (WAS-check subject verb agreement) not clean enough or if they did not respond fast enough to a crying child or if Bello felt they had been disrespectful.
Instead, they were forced to eat (??????? FOOD) that was spoiled or moldy. Laome said she often threw up and at least on one occasion, Bello made her eat her vomit.

The use of "were" instead of "was" is not an error. The if clause requires the subjunctive form, which in this case is "were". But thanks for the irony. Your example about the word "food" being omitted is a typographical error, not a grammar error. Nice try, Lori.

The descendants of slaves are not slaves. So stop whinning idiot. If you look at history, it was the Africans that sold their people into slavery. So if you want justice, then maybe Africans should come up with some money or reparation. Fat chance of that happening.

Like most misconceptions the white man did not start slavery, blacks invented slavery and started protesting when the Arabs turned the tables on them and started selling them to the white man. Slavery has been going on forever and there is more slavery in the world than ever.

      Blacks INVENTED slavery?! Huh... Really??!!

Wow, that's news to me...Inaccurate news, but hey, whatever makes your righteous indignation boat float. Every credible history of humanity that I've read indicates slavery dates back to prehistoric man (that's B.C. "before Christ's Era" for those who begin humanity with Genesis). And while life did begin in Africa, I am pretty sure that doesn't mean blacks hold the patent on slavery. It existed in prehistoric times in many cultures and is acknowledged by most archeologists and historians as an established custom in many parts of the world occurring simultaneously. Who knew...humans can be cruel, regardless of ethnicity. Oh wait...we do have you...

The White Man did invent or start slavery but he sure did exploit slavery. Because when the white man became slave master, he took slavery into a total different level. Slavery in Africa was completely different than in America. A slave in Africa could after a period of time could become a warrior or important part of the tribe that captured him after proving his worth. A female slave could actually marry into the tribe. But in the white man's America's 99% of blacks born into slavery died in slavery unless they escaped.

The marches, the blacks, the liberals, talking smack...if it was a white person doing this...but being just a black doing "it", the slavery thing, it seems to be a subdued issue, why? That is why it is important to see if the person who did this crime is black or white, because the response is different. It's called hyprocrisy.

Must we forget that blacks happily sold millions of other blacks into bondage in their native Africa and made profit off the h*ll of their own people? These people aren't as evolved. Violence runs in their blood. Even the earliest recorded incidents of slavery came from NW Africa....don't forget to read up on slavery practiced by the Egyptian pharaoh, most notably against Hebrews lmao Being ENslaved was fair play. Ship 'em ALL back! For all those m0r0ns that can't spell or use proper grammer on here, please use the educational system your forefathers sacrificed everything for.

futurelawyer; much as it pains me to point this out, you are the one who brought up the subject. Grammar – G R A M M A R.
      No E.

Please also note that on a forum this maybe isn't a big deal, but hopefully the courts in America will still insist that you, or your scribe actually know how to spell. It does matter. You can not make an eloquent point effectively if you can not actually spell.

Please do not ever fancy yourself an unbiased person, ready to defend without PREJUDICE, seeking only truth. At best, you would make a great proesecutor who only goes for the kill, without regard for morality, truth, or ethics,. That is what we have learned about you from your post. You are a bigot, and you actually are not at all mature enough to be a futurelawyer in any time frame.

And, since I'm not too much of a jerk, I won't point out where each one of you also used terrible grammar, punctuation and capitalization as well in your responses to me. But, I will say this: since I am vibrantly employed, with initials next to my name that have the word "Doctorate" in them, and you guys probably belong to the 9.2% of unemployed U.S. citizens with lots of free time to edit other responses, I will cut you some slack and be forgiving. The irony does not get much more acute than this story. Of all the people to practice slavery, a Black African does it. (I've seen the mugshot.) . Of all the places to implement slavery, the Deep South is chosen. Well, expect a new movie to replace the epic "Gone With the Wind" ; maybe something like "Look What the Wind Returned".

Asian do it all the time. go to China, your niece begs you to come work for you in the US as your nanny or Chef. your niece gets to the US, starts going to the malls, seeing pretty girls who work at fancy stores...now she wants to be like them...she either runs a way or , do you in as her slave master. ..and voila, you are in jail

If she is not a slave she does not have to run away. She can quit and find another job. You can sue her for the money you spent to get her here if you want but you can not hold her and force her to work against her will. I you do it is called slavery and it is illegal in this country. If you are going to live here you have to abide by our laws and one of those laws says you cannot hold people against their will. End of subject.

This woman brought two individuals here, made them her slaves, and actually thought she could get away with it (just because she had money and they were desperate). That firstly leads me to assume that she has difficulty with the English language and very little comprehension of our laws and values – let alone the ability to follow political pundits and decipher the difference between republicans and democrats. And secondly, even if she called herself a democrat, she was still a republican.

I wonder why these girls just didn't just walk over to a neighboring house and tell them what was happening. If someone knocked on my door and told me that my neighbor was a slaver not only would i call the police, but I would probably walk over there and attempt to knock her teeth down her throat. How dare this foreign trash come over to this country with our history and bring slaves and then dare try to call herself and American.

I am a of Nigerian descent and there is always a lot more to these stories than meets the eye. Every time my uncle travels to Nigeria, friends and family offer their teenagers as "Nannies" with hopes that my uncle will bring these kids to the US for a good life. These people are so desperate to sent their kids to the US by all means. fast forward 10 yrs, the Nanny has seen the good life of other Nigerians in the US and now, she wants independence but at a price...and the price is to start building incriminating evidence against someone who fed her, clothed her and paid her for the initially agreed upon service. God bless the US as i respect and appreciate everything this country stands for. Laws that protects against forced labor, trafficking for forced labor are all well and good until the gray area incriminates a person just because someone was able to flip the system to their own advantage. Sad to see something that probably started out as a "huge favor" ending up as "jail time". won't be surprised of some of Bidemi Bello's friends, who wished they had two nannies. were the ones who colluded with the girls and framed this as a slavery case.

While I agree with 99% of your post, you are sanitizing the reality of this woman's behavior. The "master's" behavior was predatory from the very beginning. Going out of your way to hire two illegal aliens so you can pay them less than the law allows, control them more than the law allows, and report less taxes at the end of the year is illegal for a reason. The physical abuse, etc., only serves to make a criminal situation worse, regardless of whether the "employees" quality of life was better while "enslaved."

Tola, I am sorry to say but some Nigerians are wicked. They come to the United States and want to act like big Madam and they bring little kids (mostly girls) from Nigeria to be their slaves and house girls. They make her feel like her life is so much better here than back home while all the time they are just using her for their own benefit. Trust me, I know plenty of people that this happened to and I am glad this is finally getting exposed. Some Nigerians look at this and say it is the culture but this is not Nigeria and the laws of this country takes precedence over culture.

This woman wasn't a liberal, conservative, democrat or republican. She was just a person who believed in forced or bonded labor. She apologized to her victims but she didn't mean it, all she was sorry for was getting caught. Big deal 11 years in prison-she received 1 year more in prison than the young woman she kept as a slave for 10 years. She's lucky to serve 11 years in a US prison compared to a prison in Nigeria.

Many people who immigrate to the US, from repressed cultures or regimes, usually don't leave behind their belief systems about race, gender, or economic status. If you think bigotry or prejudice is bad in the US, just look around the world, and really see how racism and cultural or religious repression effect the way people think and live and react to diversity. Many places don't encourage freedom of speech or religious and political freedom. Protesting or even being an advocate for justice could mean death or familial persecution. Economics...forget it...especially in societies where corruption and poverty are rampant. Although the woman who enslaved those other women is Black, she may come from an ethnic mindset that assumes another ethnic group from her society is inferior...even if they are also Black. This is a fact everywhere....no matter what the color of the skin is.

Hmm... "liberal" vs "Republican". How is it that such prose befalls the unintended? "Liberal" might be related to liberation or freedom; such an application, I would suppose, be a connotation of any person in America. We love our "freedom" yet the "liberals" seem to exclusively be exclusive of those who would be "Republican". How distasteful of such a concept. I am certain that Ike Eisenhower would have had a bit to say about that!
