Tracking factory slaves across Asia

By Dan Rivers, Senior International Correspondent

Penang, Malaysia - We traveled to Cambodia planning to tell the story of an escape from modern-day slave labor but what we found were tales of more women trapped in debt-bondage in Malaysia.

In Cambodia, we found the women who had escaped, but we also learned about dozens of other workers stuck in similar circumstances, unable to get home unless they paid off their "debt" to a recruitment agency.

One mother, who we can't name because of her fear of retribution, explained how she had already sold her small landholding to free one daughter from this terrible situation.

She was now desperate to free her youngest daughter, age 22, who we've called Chanary to protect her identity.

We approached the agency, which had recruited both Chanary and the other women, and after initially inviting us into their compound for an interview, we suddenly found we'd been locked in. I was genuinely worried for our safety.

The owner, Ung Rithy, has powerful contacts with the police and government.

By the time Ung Rithy arrived we'd managed to persuade her staff to unlock the gates and we were waiting out on the street.

But Ung Rithy immediately ordered her staff to grab our equipment. She lunged for our camera and a tussle ensued. We managed to break free with our video and left. Rithy later offered an interview, then changed her mind, referring us to the Ministry of Labor. It was clear the company didn't appreciate the spotlight being shone on the business.

And that's because their business seems to follow some very questionable and unethical practices.

Witnesses have told us they target young, naïve girls from villages promising them lucrative jobs abroad.

But we discovered that the reality of those jobs was very different.

Over the next days, we tracked down Chanary, who said she was trapped in Malaysia and that her passport had been taken by the agency. She said she was not being paid the $250 she'd been promised, taking home just $100 a month after various 'deductions.'

Perhaps most shockingly, she'd been told she was now in debt to Ung Rithy's agency. For her to get home she'd have to pay $1,000 - a sum that would take years for her to save.

In practice she was enslaved; debt bonded far from home with no way to escape.

She and some friends had already tried to flee but they didn't get far without passports and were soon picked by the Malaysian police and forced to return to Penang and the factory where they worked 12-hour shifts, often seven days a week.

One of Chanary's friends says she is just 17 years old and claims she was given a falsified passport showing she is 22, because it's illegal to employ foreign workers under 18 in Malaysia.

We approached the JCY electronics factory where Chanary worked.

In a statement JCY insisted: "Most workers willingly give their passports to their respective agents for safe-keeping, and they are able to obtain their passports at anytime upon their request.

"Nevertheless we will investigate this matter with all our agents and ensure their compliance.

"Further all workers in our plants have free access to our human resource department and our management to report any grievance they may have. We try to resolve all grievances in a fair and equitable manner."

Regarding the issue of one of their workers being under 18, JCY added: "This is an extremely serious allegation. Malaysia has very strict laws in regards to human trafficking and false passports.

"We urge that if you do indeed have such evidence or information, to immediately make a report to our Malaysian authorities including the police. Further, as a matter of company policy, we do not employ any foreign workers below 18 years old."

JCY supplies computer hard-drive equipment to a number of global electronics giants, including Western Digital which also refused an interview.

In a statement Western Digital told CNN: "Critical to our approach is our commitment to complying with the guidelines set out in the Electronics Industry Citizenship Coalition (EICC) code for labor standards, which can be found as part of the EICC Code of Conduct at [this link]"

"CNN's recent inquiry accelerated our scheduled audit of a second JCY facility, which was completed last week (June 2011). We reviewed our findings with JCY management, and we are partnering with them to put corrective actions in place to insure JCY meets all EICC provisions...

"Absent effective and sustained improvement, other actions would be taken, up to and including discontinuing our relationship with that supplier."

It would be nice to report that as a result of our investigation Chanary is back home with her elderly mother in Cambodia.

But she's still stuck working long shifts at JCY to pay-off her 'debt' to the Ung Rithy Agency. And Western Digital is still supplied by JCY.

However, Chanary does say her pay and conditions have improved dramatically since CNN started its inquiries.

I only hope that by exposing what is happening, perhaps soon Chanary and her friends will finally be allowed to go home.

Using the social media boycott these companies that employ these slaves.
Expose them and of course give them the opportunity to improve. If no improvement, spread it via Twitter and Facebook.

Agree. Put tariffs on import products will force companies bring back jobs. No more slave labor. Companies still make profit, it won't be big profit. Americans will have jobs and money to spend. The money stays at home.

Don't forget that the ideal project in iits simple shape , the taxes and tariffs may overwhelmed its purposes ,,, these establishments as its regualr action open many doors with dignity and rhythmic income to the labor,,, the another solution of this type of organisation is waiting the god to come in queue to get your yesterday lunch ,,, if coming,,,, /

The parts in the computer you are using right now came from places like this. What will you do when they go away? YOU are the beginning of the problem. Watch what you buy. APPLE products are the worst. People are killing themself in their factories.

No, we are not the problem. Look around you what else can buy except made in China products. All US companies have been outsourcing to China. Even we are willing to buy more expensive USA products but we can not find those anywhere. The problem is that our regulation has a loop hole that allow those corporations bringing jobs to oversea where they are not resposible to pay for fringer benefits, tax, safety, and environtmental protections. The corporations are not for US people. They are for money. If regulation has loop hole, they will take advantage of it. Now, all US economy is collapsing as the result of outsourcing.

@Hugo, the factory that Apple gets their supplies from in China has nets around it to catch people from committing suicide. They are one of the worse. The nets probably spring them right back into their seat at work.

I agree. I think the hundreds millions of us should dump the iPhone whereby the Foxcon factory in China has already clear evidence of suicides. Wonder will CNN dare to take on Apple? I reckon they be too chicken to do so to demonstrate their impartiality.

Please get your facts right. Slavery is illegal in Malaysia. What was reported could have happened anywhere in the world and it is due to greed i.e. the ills of modern day capitalism. Why do you think western companies engage suppliers from Asia? to help enrich Asia?

      October 9, 2011 at 9:31 am | Reply
      • Ann

This is NOT an ill of modern-day capitalism. This is something that has been practiced in Asia in various forms for a long, long time. For instance, the way maids are treated in Malaysia would NEVER be tolerated in developed countries, but it's considered the norm there. Likewise the way factory workers are treated. This is an insight into how "normalized" it is there. Clearly, though, the modern ease of moving people around has made this more common and easy to do than in the past.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently haremepd by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.

It happens in the US. Look at the number of Indian staffing firms that bring in Tech Works from India. They then must work off the there relocation & visa cost. The firms charge less then US staffing firms, and pay well below the market and rate. That why many US staffing firms are moving out of IT staffing. By the way they are braking US law. The requires that any one on and H1B visa be paid the prevailing wage to avoid the displacement of US workers.

    October 4, 2011 at 5:14 pm | Reply
    • Really?

I think you are ignorant...you don't have any idea how the H1B works...For H1B the company has to show the USCIS that they couldn't find any talent in this country for the particular type of the job and that's why they want to hire someone from outside. As far as wage is concerned, the wage to be paid by the company should be based on the average wage data for a particular talent for the zip code the person will be working at. This average wage data is taken from the studies they have done for example check flcdatacenter. Based on all those information that you submit the USCIS decides if the person should be awarded H1-B or not....

      • Rick DeBay

        > company has to show that they couldn't find any talent
The company writes the job requirements based on the resume the H1B recruiter supplies, to exclude local talent.
        > wage to be paid by the company should be based on the average wage data
The job is categorized in such a way as to deflate wages as much as possible, and even then it's lowered.
        >> then must work off the there relocation & visa cost.
Don't know about that, but I do know they are relocated often so that any green card application that was filed must be restarted at a new regional immigration center. Thus they can never get a green card and leave the abusive H1B recruiter.
I worked with lots of H1B's from India over the last two decades in the IT field.

Really? – You may be the ignorant one. I'm in the tech industry and compete daily mainly with Indians here on H1-B visas. They are paid below market wage and are employed in industires where there is plenty of domestic supply (meaning an abudant supply of workers who are technically qualified). In a nutshell your representation of the H1-B visa process is not how it works. Additionally what I've found is the people here on H1-B visas are essentially 'front men' for a regimen of foriegn workers (typically in Mumbai India for the tech sector). So while there may only be a few hired directly under an H1-B visa there may ultimately be hundreds of workers displaced. Want an example? Bank of America credit card processing in Addison is a great one. As the recession hit (and they took your tax dollars during the bailouts) they escalated their overall use of foriegn labor. Now that division has been sold to a Canadian company, but it doesn't change what they did nor does it change what they likely do in other operations. We need to eliminate the H1-B visa process entirely and allow the few truly talented indivuals to apply for U.S. citizenship. As part of their citizenship they should be required to relinquish citizenship in any other country so they have a vested interest in the U.S..

You are right on some of the these cases (say 20%), but not majority of those. I have to agree that some sub-standard employer do practice these means of employment and exploitation of employees, which are illegal.

However, there are majority of employments are in the area of cutting edge technology within IT where the Indians are flooded. Microsoft, for example, is not among one such low profile employers who practice what you have generalized in your posting. I hope you agree on this.

If you do, then realize that Microsoft in one of the front line companies want to get employees from India in large numbers. Why? because they find the higher standard within them as far technology and intelligence is concerned.

And, if you don't then I have nothing to say against your biased opinion which relies upon very small sample size and come to an erroneous conclusion like this.

I guess thousand of dollars we spend on cruise is only good enough for us to use the room and restaruant. That money is not enough to pay crew the salary

There are a lot of cases in penang (I was born there), but it has nothing to do with muslim or slavery. It is greed and capitalism somehow abused by the big companies that resulted in this situation. Most employers don't even know that they are underage. It happened in my family before when we hire Indonesian and Cambodian domestic helpers.

In fact, Penang IS the only state in Malaysia that is not dominated by the Malay Muslim. The locals are fed up by the factories too.

Being born female in Malaysia doesn't even cause my female family members much troubles, all of them went to universities, has a reputable career, CAN DRIVE, VOTE. Don't comment on anything if you don't know us well.

Not all Muslim are bad. The Muslim is Malaysia in fact are even friendlier than the non-muslim (except the racist government). btw, I am not Muslim.

Penang Kia is totally right about muslims in Malaysia. I am a non muslim, Malaysian born Chinese. Although I can't say the same for other muslim countries for sure, I find most muslim in Malaysia to be very open minded and friendly.

Targeting the employers side of the problem is hardly a exhaustive approach to solve the problem. In fact, having talked to people running factories that employs foreign worker, they would go any distance to avoid taking underage or any worker that may be problematic or need to be sent back to their country of origin. This will only cost them more financially in the long run.

Efforts should also be targeted at the source of the problems. Stricter law on falsifying passports, regulating agents in country of origin etc. But often, 3rd world countries that supplies foreign workers have corrupt officials.

As long as there are people who puts own financial gains ahead of the well-being of other individuals, this problems will persists.

Do these people take out loans once they get the job and want to quit? I have seen cases where the company gives them a loan to send money home then are stuck to pay it off. Who is at fault? You take the money you pay the bill.

      October 5, 2011 at 9:45 am | Reply
      • Hello World

        It is hard to say.

If those workers knew it would tkae more than decade to pay off, they would not take the jobs.

some times, agencies just lure those people with high salary incentives. By the time, those people reach foreign countries, their passports got confiscate by owners. Then owners start to deduct salary. Sometimes, it could be 100%. How do the agencies calculate the recruitment cost/transportation cost? We don't know. It is much higher than we expect. The owners make sure those people could be slaves for the rest of life.

Some people may borrower the money. However, they could be trick to borrow the money more than they could. The promise could be you will be able to pay off in a year with this kind of salary. What those worker did not realize was the amount of the mioney they borrower and the amount of wages they are going to earn

Stop insulting those workers Their only mistakes were not getting enough education and access to nes media. They want to work hard. They don't mind working in a terrible conditions so long they got a little bit better pay.

        This happens many places.

There was indenture servants in the U.S.A. and many parts of world before. The difference, many people were able to pay off in 3 years, and some people ended up gettingr rich by working hard.

The stories you heard is not indenture servants. It is different form of slavery

It's the rule more than the exception in Singapore as well — except for the scraps. I know a Filipina maid here who has had her passport and work permit confiscated by her employer, gets an average of less than one day a month off, and in the seven years that she has worked for this employer her diabetes has gone from latent to completely uncontrolled. Naturally, even though there is in law and contract here a duty of care on the part of the employer, she's receiving no medical attention, nor any medication for her diabetes or other health problems. Breakfast is usually a cup of coffee or Milo, and more often than not there is either no lunch or dinner.

She's by no means unusual here. But the world only sees the propaganda. I lived in Malaysia as long as I've lived here, and up until quite recently, the main difference was the effectiveness of the propaganda. But I do see Malaysia making much more of an effort to clean up its problems than Singapore, which can't be bothered even to admit to its own people that it HAS problems.

Here in Malaysia, most people treated their maids fairly and in fact most maids extend their stay after working here. Those who abuse their maids are an exception rather than the rule here. Those few should be sought out and punished. My maid told me that she is happier here than back home and has much more to eat, etc. She practically eats nearly half a chicken with her rice everyday and lots of vegetables and other dishes. We also buy her any of her favorites she requested. She is given her own portable TV to watch everyday and she is practically addicted to that! She is welcomed to go out with us but refuses because she gets car sick. She can phone home as often as she likes.
Only restriction we agree upon is not to mixed with strangers. This is through bad experience we had. In the past, we have come across maids who ran away after meeting some workers from Indonesia who con them with better jobs etc. With the help of the Indonesian consulate or the agent, we found those maids and discovered in their bags stolen jewelries, etc from us! One other bad experience we have with allowing maids to mix with strangers was we had a burglary as soon as an Indonesian maid left. The burglars seemed to know where we keep our things. Police later found out that the burglars were Indonesians friends of the old maid!
Our present maid who do not mix with strangers have been very happy with us for a long time and keep extending her stay with us. In fact, we treat her as part of the family.

The likely outcome would be the girls get their freedom back, but lost their job and source of income, and have to deal with the huge debt. I don’t support salve neither nor naive. This is the real world where most of the idealist west never wants to admit. The only solution would be moving those production lines to the place where they can find labor, and deal with the local bureaucracy, or relocating those production lines to US and create jobs. Perhaps that is the agenda.

Here is the problem, whatever the term is..before you hire someone, you are the one to think first if its boud-to-be slavery term or not. Forget about the annual leave, maternal leave(lady), attendance bonus or medical insurance, If you are just a little bit humane by paying them same or even close to Malaysia's basic salary. Such slavery will never ever happen.

Actually "budak" means kid. Or child. Or little one. Or something in the similar vein, but definitely not slave. Also I have been a budak once. Because I have been a child once. Just because you can say things doesn't mean you don't have to do your homework first.

Budak is boy in Malay dictionary. It is usage that needs to be understood. It depends where it is is used. In office Budak Pejabat means errand boy. In a restaurant it means lowly paid waiter. In a entertainment center, which Budak, young male or female available. So it goes on. Budak can be used as lowly paid server nearer to the respect given to salves. Usually a respectful adult will be annoyed if referred as Budak because the adult is given a very low status. The writers in comments above can use Budak to describe in slavery too. It would be understood as it is.

This is not an easy matter and finger pointing is never a solution. Everyone that is involve in the "chain" including the consumers like myself have a part to play. I bet CNN have bought Western Digital products as well as other "ethically questionable" products too. I think no one in western society can stand on moral high ground and blame the developing country for practices as such. Perhaps is a good time for us to look at our own backyard and enforce proper corporate governance for company such as WD. CNN is biased in its report to put the blame heavily on the developing country.

Western Digital is unquestionably the most supplier friendly organisation I have ever come across in my 29 years of working. JCY is also a major supplier to Seagate & Hitachi. If I am not mistaken, they also supply to Samsung.

Are the PC manufacturers willing to increase the price of the Hard Disks they buy from Western Digital, Seagate etc? Will the consumer pay more to support such an effort? I believe that it is wishful thinking.

I hope Dan Rivers wake up the Cambodian Govt to look at the matter as soon as possible while the country is being searched for the change of their society.

We silly Americans think think this is wonderful because we get to purchase products and clothes made by child labor. Thennnn, we donate money to help the poor buggers get out of slavery and not starve to death. What a crock. The average American 401(k) is built on a mountain of slave labor.

When it comes to modern slavery like this, all parties are involved – the consumers, suppliers, manufacturers, government, human resources agencies and etc. To outlaw such practices ever occur again in Malaysia, the Malaysian government needs to do more and to set itself to be a role model in SE Asia region to fight modern slavery and abolished such practices.

This is the "Global Sweatshop" the media masks as "The Global Villiage".

The real thing that should really be a "Riot" is that having a barefoot 6 year old girl doing hard labor to cheat an American his wages is that it is NOT cheaper. Yeah, they pay her nothing, but there's bribery, piracy, low quality and the cost of transport. The bribery to the local officials/generalismo alone often makes up the "Savings". But they not only face no tariff but they get TAX BREAKS AND SUBSIDIES to pay for it.

Least CNN is talking about it...finally...but IMO it's just to pretend they care then to ignore it and go back to lurid "Women/Children sold" stories so the "Feminist" crowd can indulge their hate on on men.

Why to travel anywhere?. Slavery, bonded labor is here in USA. I am from India on H1B and knew the plight of 1000's of H1B workers who got into this slavery and bonded labor. Salary will not be paid if you are not on Job, till you get your permanent residency you have to struck with the same employer, even salary is paid some portion of it will be hold by the employer. You have to work long hrs without any overtime, so many horrible stories I can tell. But can CNN publish them?. We came to this country for a better future for our kids, but instead landed into this slavery and bonded labor. Worst is people will not recognize our plight and will abuse us as if we are stealing their jobs.

I have also heard enough 1st hand accounts of their employers holding back most of their salary, and then paying the remainder of it largely in cash, so as to avoid paying USA taxes. The H1B visa program has made a lot of USA and other national's business executives rich, but enslaved a lot people here in America. You, Srini, are hosed. Welcome to America.

Foreign goods sold in America should require proof that their workers were paid the same minimum wage that applies in America and workers there are afforded the same basic worker rights that Americans get here. No proof = no import or no hire. The slave trade would lose it's biggest customer, foreign workers get a massive boost in pay and rights and with a fair playing field jobs would come flooding back into America.

This is what happens when multi national corporations are allowed to import products from these countries into the USA. No wonder we are losing jobs here. Slave labor is what these corporations want, and since they cannot get it in the US, they put their factories in countries that have it. Again, we are dumb enough to import their products without import tariffs, so in reality, we are supporting slavery.

If all corporations actually had ethics, these regulations wouldn't be necessary in the first place. The more legislation that's passed here in the United States, protecting consumers or employees (slaves in some cases) from unethical corporate practices, the more you'll hear from Washington about "Too much government regulation!", "You're forcing our jobs overseas!". Yet public companies are only graded by one thing: Profits. Ethics and Corporate responsibility are nowhere to be found in that equation. That's what the sit-ins on Wall Street are about. It's not that these protesters want more regulations, they just want ethical conduct from some of these corporations. If these corporations can't find a way to be profitable without the use of unethical practices, let the invisible hand of the market put them out of business. Unfortunately, greed usually trumps ethics, so it's up to the consumer to speak up.

Heard of a local family in Penang that hire a non-malaysian as a maid for very little money. When the maid questioned her pay the family told her that she must have had done something in her past to deserve such little pay. This is no story. The family was serious in their beliefs.

Instead of having a go at Western Digital look at the culture and the corruption in these countries. To westerns it is hard to understand but this is everyday living to the locals.

My Cambodian maid came from this agency in Cambodia. If she wasn't working with me she would be in a factory 2hrs away from her family. She told me that she lived away from her son and could only visit him every 2mths. She is making double amount of money, learning english, living in clean accommodation etc.

It is hard for these workers to get money home to their families cause they don't have banks. If you send money it is through these agencies for a fee.

The case of the factory WD enslaving an Asian could happen anywhere in the world, unfortunately, the chain leads to a Muslim country, and mind you. Malaysia as a Muslim country does not necessarily means that we encourage modern slavery and en-slave non-Muslim personnel. Keep your facts right, being a Chinese and a non-Muslim in Malaysia doesn't make me a lesser Malaysian.

Is there a way to let these women know before hand, that there are things like this out there?

Where can I find some slaves? I need a few since my wife doesn't cook or clean at all. Every morning I have to embark on a treasure hunt to find my work cloths. Portions of my cloths are A) on a giant heap on the family room couch entangled with my kids cloths B) in the dryer half dry C) In a laundry basket that was once folded weeks ago but from my three kids pilfering through day after day have become nothing more then a wad of cloths D) in a giant heap of dirty cloths on the laundry room floor E) I may or may not find one half of a pair of socks in my empty drawer. And all this after working six day a week. So....my question is as stated above, where may I acquire some of these slaves? They will get fed well with their own room (I will kick my 16 year old out of his, as he will not keep it clean) and weekends off.

Before all you up tight people start lecturing me, I am just kidding. But I would take those responsible for keeping slaves as my slaves.

I am surprised that Dan Rivers did not follow up with the Malaysian Government. There is a Ministry of Human Resources in Malaysia and its at Putrajaya. Dan should very well know that discussions with the factories will not opt out anything at all because the foreigners are not directly under the control of factories when it comes to immigration and foreign employment contracts. Talking to an aid worker will not suffice anything at all because they lack resources to tackle an issue of such magnitude.

I'm glad CNN didn't give her the 1000. If they did they would be selling out. The solution to this problem is bigger than just one girl. It's 30,000-40,000 Cambodian women (and girls) all recruited by the same 33 registered companies in Cambodia.... thats a lot of money times 1000 each! Instead we must focus our advocacy to hold these company directors (not brokers or middlemen) accountable!! And write letters to the Cambodian embassy in Malaysia, and the government in Cambodia... Let's ask for workers to have a copy of their contract, hold their passport, and have a day off!!

I kissed my way up to VP at a health insurance company. Now I take over $500,000 of your health care dollars for NO VALUE ADDED to your health care. And that’s just me. Now think about how many other VPs, Directors, Managers, etc. are at my company alone. Now multiply that by thousands of others at hundreds of other health insurance companies. From 10 to 25% of your health care dollars go towards administration that adds NO VALUE to your health care. But my company’s PAC dollars will continue to fool you little people into thinking that a single payer system will be bad. Little people like you are so easy to fool. Little people also don’t realize that a single payer system is the ONLY system that would allow little people (as an entire country) to negotiate better health care prices. Little people don’t realize that the Medical Cartels already know that. And that is the reason why the Medical Cartels spend so much PAC money from the hospitals and doctors lobbying against a single payer system. Some little people say that a single payer system would cost you little people more. But if that were true, then wouldn’t the hospitals and doctors WANT that extra money? Yes they would. So why do the Medical Cartels lobby against a single payer system? It’s because the Medical Cartels know it would allow little people to negotiate better health care prices. And that’s what the Medical Cartels are afraid of. Period.
But us big wigs at insurance companies, hospitals, and pharmacy companies don’t ever need to worry about health care no matter what it costs. We get our health care paid for one way or another by you little people. And we get the little people that work at our companies to contribute to our PACs. And us big wigs say it’s to protect the little peoples’ jobs. But in reality it would be in the little peoples’ best interest to NOT contribute to the PAC. Again, little people are so easy to be fooled. I won’t ever have to worry about losing my job with so many little people being brain washed by the Medical Cartels’ PAC money. Not only that, the Medical Cartels’ PAC money is used to elect so many republicans that will never allow a single payer system. Republicans have always fought against any meaningful health care reform. But that’s what our Medical Cartels’ PACs pay them for. Politicians can be bought so easily.
Pretty soon the only people that will be able to afford health care is us big wigs. And that’s the way it should be. We don’t want you little people using up the resources when we need them. And once again, I thank you little people for capping my SS tax at the $106,800 level. Now I only pay 1.3% SS tax and you little people pay 6.2%. Also, thank you for extending my tax breaks. I’m using the extra money on my vacation houses.

The agency in question also does maids – I have one. I paid RM4500 for the first 7mths wages – It was meant to be for a loan for her family – they got US$200. I was told the RM4500 went to her air fares (which she went by bus from KL to PEN) and her training. I've tried to ask for receipts for the break down of the RM4500 but without luck. Would love to report the agency! I'm taking her back to Cambodia so she gets home.

Hi Anita. I'm encouraged to hear that you are asking questions of the agencies and requesting receipts. Keep asking!! The truth is that even if the family is given every penny you give her, the chances are high that she will have to pay it back to the company before receiving her monthly salary in full. The system is set up as such: great for the company (they get money for every worker and employer who signs up!), okay for the employer, and horrible for the migrant domestic workers!

Domestic workers from Cambodia are recruited by the same companies as the factories, promised $180 USD a month and not told what to really expect in Malaysia (aka. Cut salary, 14 hour work days, no chance to leave or call unless the employer agrees!).

Instead of picking fights with each other on this page, let's unite to pick a BIG fight with the companies themselves. Who's in??

The conditions in labour camps are full of reveletions on the brutal regime of the slavery. The labor is generally taken to work at 4 AM in the morning and the during the hottest days of summer upto 55Centigrades they are forced to work on the construction sites. It is a common scene in DUbai, Kuwait and KSA, during summer that labourers are sleeping on the road at temperature animals cant even stand. The conditions in the labour camps are pathetic and unhumanly, you can speak some NGO who give them food, some old household stuff etc. The labour passports are kept with the sponsor as a security so that they are bonded. The salaries are not paid as said in the contracts, for several months salaries are also not paid. Now the question, these skyscrappers in ME is at the cost of human misery. I request the CNN reporters to bring the truth of this modern day slavery as well.

To help her family to put food on the table....yes this middle-man is the culprit whom might tricked them or trapped them but what extent did u go to expose these guys? Malaysia main export is electronics andthere are thousands of plants making and exporting to other countries. Did u mention this in your report so that viewers can understand that this would be the impetus for millions of immigrant workers? now we have many in our countries without jobs as result of this.....

In India, millions of girls are strangled, slowly starved or simply tossed in the trash. Moreover, in India, at least 1,370 girls are aborted every day. As a comparison, some 250 Indians die every day in road accidents. Terrorists killed about six people, on an average, every day in 2009. In the last two decades of economic progress, 10 million girls have died as such in India.
SHAME ON INDIA AND ITS BARBARIC AND MEDIEVAL CULTURE !!!

Fair trade is a big problem. So we put it aside. Now we talk about why there is such problem. It is because the authority that responsible, are corrupt. They must have taken a lot of wealth from the recruitment company. Cambodian government just passed a law against corruption. But to whom will they apply the law? Perhaps not against this recruitment company.
Another problem is that, in Cambodia, people has nothing to do. They have to look for a job in the factory. they are happy to receive around 100 dollars with extratime. So, when they hear that the wage in Malaysia is better, say 300 dollars, they are happy to go. But they were perhaps not explained the real condition, that their salary would be taken. Even they are not 18 years old, they have to told the authority that they are 18. This is the really case. It is so great that CNN reports this case. In Cambodia, there are a few unbiased media. But this media is not well reached by normal people because of literacy. So people turn to read local language newspapers which are the mouth of the government.
All in all, it is so hard to say in Cambodia. If talking about freedom of the press, I would put it at the bottom of the rank.

Middle eastern countries are the worst when it comes to human rights. They pay foreign workers low wages(or no wages), take their passports, and make them work long hours in extreme heat. Go to countries like Kuwait, Saudi, and Bahrain and you'll see what Im talking about. Slavery is more wide spread in the Middle East than anywhere in the world and noone seems to care cause governments are too afraid of the "Royals" that rule these nations.

The heart of the matter is caring for your neighbor whether they live next door or in another country. Every human being has value in God's eyes and should be treated justly. "Do to others as you would have them do to you." The Golden Rule can from the Bible and never goes out of style. Yet Western culture has been slowly poisoned with a de-valuing of life in some media, some corporate sectors, some educational settings, and in homes. I truly believe the root of the problem with the American economy (speaking as a USA citizen) is is the greed and consumerism in our nation that allows so many unethical practices while saying we're a "nation under God". If we say it then we need to step up and bring morals back into our society. Thank you CNN for doing this story and the Freedom Project to help consumers to take a stand for ethical treatment.

I am surprised Dan Rivers and others at CNN have overlooked stories of modern day factory slaves in the Middle East. Gulf states like Saudi Arabia and 2022 World Cup host country Qatar are still following the RIGID SPONSORSHIP SYSTEM. Only Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain,Oman have made the system less severe on foreign workers in their countries under international pressure, allowing easy change of jobs. Everybody, right from workers in a advertising company, a
construction worker or even a newspaper journalist is a slave in the above two GCC states. Sponsorship system forces you to work for an employer even if the employer has unfavourable work conditions like unfair pay, skeletal staff and conditions like no extra payment for working on public holidays and for extra workloads or unfair payment criteria. Many Asian workers are fleeing poverty in there home countries and are in GCC states after paying a huge sum to manpower agencies. It is this situation that employers in Gulf states exploit using the the modern day slavery system called Sponsorship system.
When world's tyrants like Saddam Hussein and Muammar Gaddafi have met their end, it is also time that the TYRANNICAL SPONSORSHIP SYSTEM in Gulf states are brought to an end. I hope CNN will highlight this and also the UN Human Rights body will take quick action to end this unfair system.

MODERATOR, INVESTIGATE THIS POST! The host "www.cdcdiabetes2011.com" is apparently hosted on a Fullhost.ca (proudly Canadian) server; it's highly unlikely that a US Government agency would not either host on their own system. There is a legitimate cdc.gov Diabetes Website, hosted on Akamai.

Im impressed, I have to admit. Seldom do I come across a blog thats both equally educative and amusing, and let me tell you, youve hit the nail on the head. The problem is something which too few people are speaking intelligently about. Im very happy I came across this in my search for something regarding this.

The apex stock to buy for 2021 range with small-cap diamonds in the rough similar to URBT to dominant growth stocks. When you have $500 free right now, the subsequent innovative stock can be perfect for opportunistic long-term shareholders. Urban Television Network Corp stock OTC: URBT. I do not know about you, but once I think of technology, internet streaming services stocks spring to mind. Over the past decade, we have perceived astounding enhancements in streaming bit rates and devices that are created to support those services. We have seen major streaming services like Disney and Netflix snag market dominance, except this little known business URBT. have introduced magnificent internet streaming services URBTPlus Movies + Live TV. I imagine this business will undoubtedly corner the urban streaming markeplace. The stock market forever has a few shocks waiting for you, just like any shareholder in 2020 would attest. URBT has already been amazing that has a 400 increase over 12 months. But by & large, the biggest element professionals are considering as they identify the best stocks to get for 2021 is the same variable that led 2020: COVID-19. & streaming service URBTPlus is answering the call. So as an investor look at Urban TV Network Corp. stock symbol "URBT". #urbt

Furthermore, i believe that mesothelioma is a exceptional form of melanoma that is commonly found in individuals previously familiar with asbestos. Cancerous tissue form inside mesothelium, which is a defensive lining that covers a lot of the body's organs. These cells typically form within the lining on the lungs, mid-section, or the sac which encircles one's heart. Thanks for revealing your ideas.

Being alive without the presence of approaches to the problems you've solved through your good short post is a critical case, as well as the ones that might have badly affected my entire career if I had not encountered your web site. I realized more something totally new on this fat loss issue. One issue is that good nutrition is highly vital while dieting. A tremendous reduction in fast foods, sugary meals, fried foods, sweet foods, red meat, and whitened flour products could possibly be necessary. Retaining wastes parasitic organisms, and contaminants may prevent targets for losing weight. While specific drugs for the short term solve the condition, the awful side effects usually are not worth it, and so they never offer more than a temporary solution. This is a known proven fact that 95 of fad diets fail. Thanks for sharing your opinions on this blog site.

I want to write my opinion that the price of car insurance will vary from one scheme to another, due to the fact there are so many different issues which contribute to the overall cost. For instance, the model and make of the automobile will have a significant bearing on the price tag. A reliable old family motor vehicle will have an inexpensive premium than the usual flashy sports vehicle.

I've really noticed that fixing credit activity must be conducted with tactics. If not, chances are you'll find yourself causing harm to your ranking. In order to reach your goals in fixing your credit history you have to ascertain that from this time you pay all of your monthly fees promptly before their slated date. It's really significant simply because by not necessarily accomplishing that area, all other measures that you will take to improve your credit rating will not be efficient. Thanks for expressing your thoughts.

I run a vape shop directory and we have had a posting from a vape store in the USA that also markets CBD products. A Month later on, PayPal has contacted use to claim that our account has been restricted and have requested us to take away PayPal as a payment method from our vape store website directory. We do not offer CBD products such as CBD oil. We only provide marketing and advertising solutions to CBD firms. I have looked into Holland & Barrett– the UK's Well known Health and wellness Store and if you take a close look, you will witness that they offer for sale a comparatively extensive series of CBD goods, primarily CBD oil and they also happen to accept PayPal as a settlement method. It appears that PayPal is employing double standards to many different firms. Due to this restriction, I can no longer take PayPal on my CBD-related web site. This has constricted my payment choices and currently, I am intensely dependent on Cryptocurrency payments and straightforward bank transfers. I have sought advice from a solicitor from a Magic Circle law practice in London and they stated that what PayPal is undertaking is entirely unlawful and discriminatory as it ought to be applying an uniform criterion to all companies. I am yet to seek advice from yet another attorney from a US law office in London to see what PayPal's legal position is in the United States. Meanwhile, I would be very appreciative if anyone here at targetdomain could provide me with different payment processors/merchants that deal with CBD companies.
