Tradition forces girls into prostitution

Editor's note: In some Indian villages, girls are sent into prostitution by their families - a tradition that began as religious obligation but is now continued for money. In "Trapped by Tradition," which airs Saturday and Sunday on CNN International, (viewing times below) "Slumdog Millionaire" star Anil Kapoor shows how Indian charities are trying to stop the tradition. CNN has changed Priya and Puja's names.

Bharatpur District, India - She's around 13 years old. She goes to school, loves to sing and dance, and between giggles, she says she dreams of being an actress one day.

Puja hardly looks like a fighter but beneath her smiling face is a steely resolve. She is the first girl in her family to go to school and is determined to finish it. Very few girls in her community have done that.

Puja's mother wasn't given that chance. Priya, now in her late 30s, was forced into prostitution when she was a young girl.

Stories like this are common in the Bharatpur district of Rajasthan state in Western India, where girls are sold to brothels, once they hit puberty.

Locals mark this rite of passage with a coming of age ceremony called Nathni Utarna – which translates as taking off the nose ring - that signifies a girl is ready to be sent into the sex trade, that she's considered ready to sleep with her first client.

Plan India, a charity working in the village to wipe out the tradition, says these ceremonies were once common but now it's getting harder to find families to admit they held one.

Ask Anil Kapoor your question

Indian film star Anil Kapoor, as a patron of Plan India, said: "A lot of the rehabilitated women are ensuring that the girls from their families don't get thrown into the practice.

"It's a small step, but one in the right direction. Changing the mindset of the people in the village is key.

"Now that the women themselves are taking a stand against prostitution, I am hopeful, optimistic, we can end this tradition.

He took a CNN Freedom Project crew to the village in Bharatpur district where Puja showed us the progress.

Often, young girls are pushed into the sex business by their own fathers and brothers. The men see nothing wrong with it.

They say it is a tradition that has been passed down through generations. It began with the devdasi culture (devdasi means servant of God).

Under the devdasi system, girls were dedicated to a life of sex work in the name of religion.

Initially, they would serve upper class men in the local community. The girls would entertain princes and landlords with song and dance.

Gradually, this gave way to a life of prostitution. Many women, like Priya, end up in the red light districts of India's major cities.

Money is key. In the sleepy village some residents make money from farming and others are daily wage laborers. But there is very little money.

It's an area of extreme poverty – so sending a daughter into the sex business is seen as a way for parents to unburden themselves of a child -and, it's lucrative.

A former prostitute told CNN she would earn as much as $20 a day working in New Delhi's red light district. It's a lot of money for families in this area, many of whom live on less than a dollar a day.

Priya works in a New Delhi brothel. She lives there for a few months, earns handsomely and then returns to her village for a few weeks to spend time with her family.

She says she continues to work as a prostitute because she does not want her children to follow in her footsteps. "What we did, we don't want our children to do that," says Priya. "It should not happen to anyone."

Plan India and its local partner, Gram Niyojan Kendra, are bringing change to Priya's village -and she wants Puja to benefit from that.

Officials at the charities say they are making inroads; that the practice of sending girls into prostitution is gradually declining.

Plan India has recently opened four new schools in the area, and they are full of students.

"It's difficult to get women who are already in the sex trade to quit, because they get used to the income," says Bhagyashri Dengle, Plan India's executive director.

So the group focuses on preventing young children from falling into the same trap. Education is the key to change, says Dengle.

They offer counseling to the women and encourage them to find other ways of earning money. In some cases, Plan India-GNK helps them start a small business such helping to buy a cow so the woman can then sell milk.

Puja says she's delighted she's going to school. It gives her a sense of purpose and confidence.

When Kapoor and CNN visited her village, it was Puja who showed us around.

She proudly took us on a tour of the schools in the area. Small, bright classrooms that were packed with students and bursting with hope.

For Puja, the hope is she won't get trapped by tradition and is able realize her dreams - to finish school and to make her mother proud.

It could be powerty for her parents who introduced her. But she seems to be perfectly happy now. She works, takes long vacations to go back to her family, makes 20 times more than anyone else in the village. And she returns volunterily(!!!!). It's not really a slavery, it is her concious choice. She prefers this type of work over hard working in the field. Do you want to tell her that she shouldn't be doing this and that she should instead labor on a plantation, or tool at the assembly line? Repeat it again, she is doing this volunterily. She is not a slave, she choose it as her job, a profession. And let her practice it, instead of killing her business off.

But somebody has the money to keep paying for the many thousands/millions (?) of girls forced into this mess. There must not be as much poverty as we are lead to believe.

VR13 – my other comment was moderated but here is the ladies statement from within the article:
"She says she continues to work as a pr–os-t–itute because she does not want her children to follow in her footsteps. "What we did, we don't want our children to do that," says Priya. "It should not happen to anyone."

      • VR13

But someone will also be poorer than the other, and someone will always be paying for services while the others – performing them. Do you prefer that woman work hard on a construction, carrying briks all day long and making a fraction of money? Or spending day in the field, making even less?

        September 22, 2011 at 6:07 pm |
      • VR13

To W427. And do you think a poor day laborer wishes his children will work so hard day in and out for almost no money? If that woman believes it's that wrong, she can exit the trade. She is there volunterily. Meanwhile, it's us who make it difficult for her. We stigmatize the trade for them, making it sound shameful and thus difficult. It used to be normal in that community/society, normal to the point that people wouldn't need to hide it: "My daughter works in a field." And my daughter is in the city, waiting tables" "And my daughter is entertaining men" "And mine – helping lay bricks at the construction site." And now because of "liberals" the trade is shameful, and the girl would be either traumatized or forced to leave it and go work in the field.

        September 22, 2011 at 6:14 pm |
      • W247

        VR13 –

I would carry bricks before I let myself be put into that position.

        September 22, 2011 at 6:14 pm |
      • ann

@VR13 I'd work construction and starve before doing that stuff. And that isn't because of shame. That is because it would be awful to do that daily with just random people. Yuck.

        September 22, 2011 at 6:16 pm |
      • ann

@VR13 actually it said, "She says she continues to work as a pr-os-ti-tute because she does not want her children to follow in her footsteps." She is trying to fund her kids education so they don't have to live that awful life. I bet if she didn't have kids she would have gotten out already.

        September 22, 2011 at 6:19 pm |
      • W247

VR13 – would you allow your daughter or your wife to do that? Sleep with the highest – or lowest – bidder without shaming her when she comes back home to you?

        September 22, 2011 at 6:27 pm |
      • VR13

"I'd work construction," and "I would carry bricks." Good luck. And we'll see what you say after 15 years of that, without being able to provide for your children. And without any light at the end of the tunnel. And we'll see whether you would wish your children follow your route.

        September 22, 2011 at 6:30 pm |
      • ann

@vr31 I wouldn't have children if I was that poor.

        September 22, 2011 at 6:36 pm |
      • W247

The point is that I DO have a light at the end of my tunnel, a trust that I will be taken care of, that my needs will be met by my Lord and Savior. To do something outside of that nature, that is against His will is not what I would be willing to put my family through.

VR13, she didn't really choose it, she does it so her daughters won't, she does it so they can eat. You're right maybe it's not slavery, but it certainly is a decision made under heavy duress.

      • Jaya

        To VR13,
This lady is doing this in order to give her children a better future. This is something that a lot of Indians do -almost kill themselves in order to give their children everything they did not have. I am not sure how and when this became a part of the mindset of the vast majority of Indians. And then there is this minority of people who do things like force their daughters in to the flesh trade. Always takes all kinds fo make a world. Casey Anthony case proved that right.

I am ALL FOR education and giving the opportunity to do other things, but honestly I hope they do not swing too far the other way by banning 'working' entirely and removing it as a "legitimate" option. Doing so would not eliminate 'working', it would just make it less safe for the women involved.

That said, 13 might be... a bit young. Age of majority is mostly a cultural thing (as opposed to the " "working' will always exist" fact of life) so I'm not gonna judge and say they're terrible or barbaric because of it or that they MUST change... but raising the age to something like 15 would likely help make sure the choice was one SHE made instead of her family

Your comment made me feel ill at my stomach. Even at 15 a girl is very much still a child in her mind and is in no way old enough to decide to be a pro on purpose (Really I am not even sure there is anyone who should fall to such a low opinion of themselves to do this) This discussion wouldn't even be happening if the reverse were true. Do you think anyone in that region would be ok with taking a 13 or 15 year old boy and letting men use them in that way? No they would be freaked. What is sick is that since it is a girl it is some how ok. It is child abuse plain and simple. I would rather die than have been treated like that.

        September 22, 2011 at 5:41 pm |
      • Numero10

Yeah, because 15 is so much older than 13. And at 15 they really understand what they are getting into. Well, really being forced into, I can't think of a 15 year-old thinking this is the greatest life ever. Their parents will make the decision, whether the kids are 13, 15 or 18. They will be offered to starve to death or "work" like you put it nicely.

        September 22, 2011 at 5:49 pm |
      • VR13

Ann, you are talking from the position of a Westerner, a foreigner for that culture. Their perception might be different. They might not see shame in this, nor many other emotional problems. While I agree that a young girl might want to decide on its own to enter this path, noone prevents a woman to quit. This is her choice. It's not slavery.

And once we are on the subject, quite a few women in the world choose similar path, although might be less explicit. When faced about the need to work 60 hours a week the entire live for pennies or to date/sleep/socialize with wealthy men, many women, including in the US, chose the later.

Right...... 15 wouuld make it HER choice.

Because that's what every 15 year old girl would have some middle-aged slimy, filthy, sweaty, balding fat guy all over her........and for $20 a day......that makes each trick, what, like.....$ .50 to $1.00?

I think you missed some of the article. It said that the tradition BEGAN as woman entertaining wealthy men.

It said that NOW these women and children work the Red Light Districts.

@VR13 I am not talking about shame. That isn't even the tip of what I am talking about. I am talking about what it would be like to be violated against your will daily for life. Not to mention being daily exposed to potential exposure to diseases or unwanted pregnancy if the birth control fails. Taking an act that should be with someone you trust and love and making it traumatic and unenjoyable event and having them repeat it daily. You take a girl who is totally innocent and has no idea what is going to happen or what it means at all and then asking her, "Hey you want to do this". Do you think she has any idea what she is getting into? Do you have any idea what it does to a girl to experience that in an unloving setting that is painful and awful? We're not talking about her having real relationships with people she chooses here. A girl regardless of culture should not have to be exposed to painful abrupt introduction to a life they don't know anything about prior. With guys of all types they have no choice over too. Again like I said just talking about this is making me ill.

Oh yeah and don't even get me started on how much they have to do that daily. Her parts would probably be sore daily. Yeah that sounds like fun. Not to mention having to sleep with anyone who comes up with the money regardless if you find them repulsive or not.

Pick a number, any number. Wait! Not THAT one, it won't WORK... On the one end of the spectrum you have the very real issue that it's too young. On the other you have an impossible task of getting it accepted by the village as a suitable answer. 15 is obviously still too young, yet perhaps, just PERHAPS it's an obtainable number and it's better than the status quo.

Really – the suggested approach of weeding them off that particular path entirely is the most likely to have a lasting impact. Good luck, it won't be easy – but nothing worth while usually is.

    • Doodlebug

The article says: " a tradition that began as religious obligation" but tradition teaches us that abstaining is what is correct and what a devout unmarried person does. That is the strong of will that is able to withstand the temptation and thereby feeding the spirit vice the body. If you would not give a man you do not know $100, then why would you give him your body or your daughters body? Is their worth not more? I think over time the truth in all of this has been blurred by lazy greed. This is a quick and easy and only the daughters need to suffer and not the person forcing the daughters into this. This is selfish to ask of a child you are susposed to both protect and love.

shame shame shame on the men. it seems that men put religion as the reason for these "traditions". it's really because they think with their penises. now mind you, most men are wonderful, but those that still believe this crap, should be castrated.
and mothers and fathers should empower their young girls to be independent.
unfortunately, if you're a woman who works, it's still a man that gave you the job. when will this change?

This has nothing to do with "Indian" traditions. I would say Anil Kapoor needs to know more about Indian tradition. Indian traditions are 1000s of years old.

There may be customs that a group of people follow or got formed within certain groups at certain times as there were no restrictions or hard rules imposed on people in India against those. Anybody has the right to form and spread his or her own ideologies. India has never hanged anyone for that in history. They have the complete freedom and privilege to question or deviate from what is being followed – correct or wrong. That is the level of freedom that you would see in India. In such a society, it is so easy to get wrong customs like this (what CNN/Mr.Kapoor reported) a practice.

India has a long history of religious conflict, killing thousands. To say that India has never hanged anyone for ideological reasons is absurd. Some times the conqueror would reduce those without means to slavery - much more profitable than mass slaughter, or when Islam took over, it would let the untouchables convert, but still many remained in slavery for generations. It is past time to sweep religious tradition and hatred away.

It's quite disgusting, as a person of India origin it's a shame that these things continue. Tradition is one thing, but this is JUST WRONG. Because people thousands of years ago, manipulated people into this doesn't mean it has a place in India. I support Anil. Education and empowerment is the only way. India needs to realize this and fix this. India has a lot of problems, and has overcome a lot in it's history, this is just one more obstacle India needs to get over. God speed.

Your comment is quite true about people thousands of years ago finding and using means to manipulate. However, this concept isn't limited to just this tradition. All religion in general finds it's roots in this motivation. Manipulation, through fear, intimidation and tradition is still one of the longest running hoaxes of mankind. Where do you think the term "god fearing" (used to describe religious people) came from?

I agree that "god fearing" people have been behind a great deal if not most accounts of human suffering. That said, I would qualify your point by stating that there is ONE GOD who is infinitely different in character than ALL other, so called, man-invented, gods! To fear these gods leads to the practice of manipulation, intimidation, suffering etc., but to fear the one true God over all Creation, as He has been revealed in His Son, Jesus Christ, is to learn the infinite value of every human being, and to learn how deeply God loves the world and desires to deliver the world from all suffering; suffering that is a consequence of people failing to "fear" the one TRUE GOD!

W247–the decent human rights of clean food/water and to be unmolested? Where pray tell does this exist? Not even in America–not with the rampant failures in coliform testing in American cities and our problems with pedophilia, child rapist and serial murders and incest–or do we not see that huge log in our own eye?

I agree it's good that they are making changes & this part of India like all other 3rd world countries has alot of problems. I do believe education is the key however the 1st & foremost education they get needs to be on birth control & pregnancy prevention! These people "sell their daughters to unburden themselves", then why are they having them in the first place??? I think it's child abuse to bring children into this world that you can't afford to feed or take care of!!! How sick, I wish we could punish those who create these problems for themselves & their children.

      • W247

So who would you be punishing? The government for not providing the socialist system to help get them birth control, or the men that force themselves on the woman, or the women for opting to use what little money they have to feed their families instead of purchasing birth control?

        September 22, 2011 at 3:17 pm |
      • VR13

All, Yeah, punish them all because you are angry, and clueless too. Whom are you going to punish, the parents who guided their daughter into the only path that would save her from starving to death? The woman, who would rather make $20 a day and be able to spent weeks with her family than labor from15 hours a day in the field making pennies? The customer whose patronage allows that woman to make great money? The economy of powerty? Or the Indian government for not creating socialistic system that would cover the needs of everyone in the huge country? It's easy to be angry and clueless instead of thinking and understanding.

But if you think again, there is no need to feel angry. Certain things are looked at different in different societies and it looks like there is less stigma or emotional trauma in that particular community. They are actually happy to do what they do. So what you should do instead is to patronage the trade when you are there, as the money you pay will actually go to support that 13 year old while she is in school.

Please do not confuse tradition and religion. Traditions can be based on religion and other origins as well. Some people in the past exploited innocent people and invented their own traditions. To give an example of how a tradition starts, Ganesh festivals that happen throughout India. They were started by Sri Balagangadhar Tilak. He used these festivals to bring people together for freedom fight. His intentions are good. Please do not think I am criticizing him. Today someone criticizes, Ganesh festival polluting water resources. It is right. It is not hindu religion which ask us to make these big plaster of paris idols. Scriptures talk about mud idols which are perfectly safe.

Similarly scriptures prohibits adultery. But the people are inclined towards sin. So they invent perverted tradition to satisfy them and give religious color to it

      • Jeff

No one is confusing the two. It is merely a comparison as to how human manipulation an intimidation is rampant throughout all societies in major ways that people just do not recognize. The motivations and goals are all the have humans behave or act in a specific way (manipulation).

And BTW, I don't concur that this is all about tradition. It is about human beings manipulating others to benefit themselves, family or no family. It's the same as blaming guns for killing people when in actuality, it is people using guns to kill people.....but people with agendas will use such convenient misdirection to achieve their true goals without addressing the real underlying problem.

I am least bit surprised that people have been harnessing Religion to make twisted to corrupt innocent minds. Sometimes its a twisted version of fringe Hinduism, sometimes evangelical meta-Christianity and sometimes Islam. Its all the same. What you need is a revolution that involves freeing minds and breaking the shackles imposed by the social order, whatever that is. Not a one off project like this one ...

Everyone around knows who did that including the police, but nobody raises voice because it is right in that society. And yes, it happens even today.

What is "a Hindu version of Pakistan" if not India itself? You are the same people. India was slit up in three in the 1940s whereby the eastern and western cutoffs where done in order to create a new nation for muslims – Pakistan. Then millions of people fled back and forth in a kind of civil war just to end up in the country embracing their religion. (Later East Pakistan broke away from Pakistan and changed its name to Bangladesh.)

There is no one true religion, and as long as people believe there is, there will always be strife and crimes against humanity.
Christians have blood on their hands too, and have had some very perverse practices in their history.
As long as people continue to believe that their beliefs and that their religion is the only true one there will continue to be problems, wars, cruelty, and enslavement.
When people believe that their faith is right, and the only one that is true, they cannot accept others as equals, and this creates more rifts and more class warfare and prejudice.

    sorry one more time : it has to do with poverty, it's not only India which is concerned, but all these countries around in south east asia, south asia, well the women in the eastern countries are not raised to think by themselves, in the very poor class they are the slave of the mother in law, not to speak of the husband, and even in the middle class she needs the approval of the husband, they don"'t really manage their money when they have it; it's changing in the big cities but mostly it's the man's law, forget about the western theory of independance for woman;

The other thing I can't stand is when western society worry about poverty and suffering around the world, but have serious issues where immigration is concerned. In a western world with resources and land abound, it is downright evil that we don't allow millions of those who suffer around the world, to enjoy what we have, with no questions asked. The western world, is a stolen world, and there is nothing that we can't share that will end up killing us if we do. In fact, America's take take take untiil there is so much debt, is what is now destroying that nation, overwanting and undersharing, God sees.

I agree with you. God charges us to take care of the orphans, the children, the widows, the poor, the hungry. Yet as a people over all we are doing a poor job of that. You will find some organizations that are doing what the Lord asks them to do, but as a people in general we are very poor in spirit.

I found the Christian peoples in India to be poor physically but very rich spiritually.

2 thoughts: having worked with well-educated Indian males, ages 20-somethings thru mid-40s, I can testify they are raised/taught the male is superior, women are to serve and when a male want something it is the duty of the woman to provide it. One very young man insisted I sell him my car because he liked it and didn;t want to exert himself looking for his own. I told him. nicely but firmly, this was USA and women here didn't follow India rules, and to find his own car..
2nd, the broadbashing I see about various religions are beside the point: the core issue is, very young girls R sold for profit. In many cultures girls R cnsidered throw-away commodities (China, nearly all the Middle East nations, et al). I find it ironic since males cannot create and nurture life in their bodies, only females can do this and yet girl children are not as desireable or as treasured as the all-important son.

You do of course realize that if you were born in the middle east you would be reciting the Qoran or whatever other book or rules they have been brainwashed with, right? The chances of you being Christian if you were born in another place is slim to none. Religion is the biggest hoax known to man. It's just silly to believe in something when there is zero proof of it's existence. If you wer born in UTAH the chances of your parents telling you from birth that you are a Mormon and you believing all of the Mormon story is very high. In Utah most churches are Mormon and the "wierd" little Baptist or Methodist Churches are considered just that "wierd".. Whereas, if you are from the bible belt you are more likely to be Baptist or Methodist and the few Mormon churches are considered "weird". How do you know see that religion is nothing but brainwashing a bunch of silly rules and stories into innocent childrens heads and demanding that they believe it.

The persecuted church in other countries where the name of Christ is not even allowed to be spoken is much greater than most even know. Your comment about how people who are born in other countries have a "slim to none" chance of being a Christian is simply false. Just because they are unable to proclaim their love and belief of Jesus does not mean it does not exist.

"Religion' is a set of beliefs based on a creed, tradition or organized dogma; as such, you are right: there is no proof. But to confuse "religion" with belief in a Supreme Intelligence is a flawed comparison, and intellectually lazy. The very complex and detailed elements of our physical environs, both on earth and in the cosmos, should prompt all of us to be less assertive in our puny assumptions of universal independence.

This kind of tradition is common in all human societies without permeant Biblical Christian tradition. Christian missionaries with some Western powers abolished most of them but some pagans still keep the evil to this day. The concept of the God-given human dignity and everyone's equality under God is strictly Christian. Secularism would keep this kind of practice as a "culture" to preserve.

    September 22, 2011 at 1:28 am | Reply
    • one9

No, I doubt that "secularists" would intentionally wish to preserve this part of a culture. However, given a secularist's commitment to science, would probably use whatever clout (power) they have within academia to produce scientific evidence to "prove" it is in the best interest of the people to stop the practice. In the end, the secularist uses a form of power as does any religious follower/leader. It is with situations like the one in this article that show the limit to the goal for objectivity via scientific research. Some things we just know are not good....despite what the results of well funded research may or may not say. Another example, how is science going to tell us that incest is wrong?

You couldn't be farther from the truth Christianna. There are no laws of dignity or equality in Christianity Christianna. All of the laws you mistaken for Christian laws were kidnapped along with Jesus from what you call Judaism. Jesus said none of those laws would pass away or change until the end of heaven and earth. Whoever was to teach contrary to those laws would be the least in Heaven. That would make your apostle Paul a liar, a fraud, the least in the kingdom of heaven and your religion a cult with no foundation.

        September 22, 2011 at 3:28 pm |
      • W247

        "...can escape from the rapes..."

I am going to assume that you really didn't put much thought into that statement. There are typically physical and emotional scars that go along with being brutally raped. A rapist probably isn't thinking about your comfort during the act. Then if you are lucky enough to have him leave you alone afterwards, you can then hope that you didn't just get pregnant, or catch a disease, or since you were so young, you weren't ripped horribly in places that weren't meant to be ripped.

Now, both scenarios are horrible – being purposely blinded or purposely raped.

What an easy out. Muslim societies have one of the overall worst treatment of women on planet Earth, so you just don't admit that they are "real" Muslims. Soooo, when the Afgans use young boys as lovers, they are not "real" Muslims. When Saudi Arabia won't let women drive or wear normal clothes, they must not be "real" Muslims. If Muslim women who complain of rape are then blamed for it and whipped or killed, it must not be by "real" Muslims. If an Arab girl dishonors her family by talking to an unmarried man too long, it's okay to kill her, as long as your not a "real" Muslim.

Bull Wendy, irregardless to what you say the facts are just that facts. Religion is defined by it's people and not the people defined by the religion. Religion is a written doctrine that can't be or shouldn't be changed. At least Islam is, I know Christianity changes its doctrine whenever to be in tune with its followers. Judaism's elders have done the same when they have made it official to ignore certain doctrines of the faith. When people choose to practice their own form of Islam then yes they are not Muslims. The word Muslims itself defines the behavior of those who practice the faith. If that behavior is outside of the tenets of the faith then how can you hold religion responsible for behavior of those who are practicing contrary to the faith? You can't so your opinion is very moronic.

There is no pope in the bible and yet there is one. Just because its dedicated to GOD doesnt mean its what he wants. Also you people who want to talk all this crap about religion dont have a clue about what most religions even speak about. Its amazing when people say that Christianity caused all that suffering during the dark ages because of the church and yet forget that Christ never forced anyone to believe in him. Man is to blame for its stupidity not GOD. Often times we can easily do the right thing but we choose not to. Thats our fault and not his. Once you understand right and wrong you make a choice. My job is not to make you believe in my faith. I only ask that you respect my choices as I respect your choices. What many of you say if foolish and underterminedly rude but it seems even with all the schooling and knowledge today its has made many of you barbaric rather than enlightened. Even many of the philosophers had to conclude there was a GOD during their research. To me GOD helps those who helps themselves. You can pray all day for something but If you havent done all you can to make it happen then why should GOD help you? Pray and then go to work.

Despite the fact the so claimed one of the emerging super world economies ,India lags in many/several social/cultural/economic/financial aspects in confront to so many other developing countries. Only a very few I would say 99%++++ of the population is poverty stricken and is deprived with many basis requirements. Truly speaking India is still a under developed country and will take decades to reach the so called alfa state.

Economically speaking, India is what is called a "developing country" and I would say that 99% of the population is indeed not under the poverty line. The standard of living has taken a turn for the better in the past few decades, and although the gap between the rich and the poor is large, I feel the government is aware of this and is now burdened with the daunting task of rectifying this socioeconomic problem. But the country is not all made up of rural villages and farmers, etc. like most non-Indians like to believe. Yes, the absolute number of people in poverty is high, but we must look at the income distribution of the population (meaning percentages).

Furthermore, see the distribution of the U.S.'s income. The gap between the rich and poor is large and has been increasing due to the recent economic downturn.

Though I must say that they have made a good deal of progress, but one must not stop and admire it, rather carry on with it till they achieve their intended goal of transforming poverty, bringing in equality...

Yesterday I was studying religious studies, and thats when I realized Indias traditional caste system is also a total manipulation of keeping people under religious class control, in reality there is no such thing as low caste and higher caste, it was created for manipulation and to control the masses.

I hope Indians wake up and realize the messages that Buddha, Mahavir,... when they say the caste system was wrong and should be abolished immediately.

(BTW my own religion is Jainism)

Sorry to tell you that this is absolutely incorrect. The caste system has a CLEAR religious basis which can be seen in the Vedas. In the Rig Veda (the first scripture of Hinduism, containing spiritual and scientific knowledge) it says that the universe was created out of the parts of the body of a single cosmic man Purusha when his body was sacrificed. There the four classes (varnas) of Indian society come from his body: the priest (Brahmin) from his mouth, the warrior (Kshatritya) from his arms, the peasant (Vaishya) from his thighs, and the servant (Shudra) from his legs. If you don't believe me, I welcome you to read a (good) translation of the Hindu religious texts. I am not religious myself, but I would never comment about a facet of someone else's religion without doing some preliminary research. I suggest you do the same.

By the way, this does not mean I agree with the caste system (despite being Brahmin). However, my point is to clarify that it is written in our religious scripture.

The key is interpretation. Even if a class or caste was "created" there's nothing to support it being a DNA-based group. Why should children be born into the same caste as their parents. Maybe the Hindu text was meant to be a bit more esoteric in it's meaning, perhaps it was the mind of the person that was "caste" or died to be in a specific group. So by re-incarnation the same person could be born into the family of another caste. After all the karma may cause souls to get entangled via blood relations too. So people born in the same family may not be necesarily be of the same caste. My point is, the esoteric meaning of caste (which was a spiritual thing) has been abused to mean something physical (blood related), to force slavery on entire families and populations whereas a even a Shudra can give birth to a Brahmin and vice versa, since the real caste was in the non-physical (mind) rather than DNA (blood).

        September 22, 2011 at 9:46 am |
      • pm

The point is that someone (a person, not a god) who had power a long time ago wrote this story to manipulate the masses into doing what they want to do. Just because it is in your "Scriptures" doesn't mean a thing. Leaders, religious or otherwise, have used oppression and lack of education to control the masses, at the same time enjoying all of the fruits their society has to offer at the expense of the same people they exploit. Christianity has one of the worst records of all. The Crusades, Imperialism and now the World Bank...all vehicles to exploit the "3rd World" the name of religion.

I don't know where you got the information that the concept of caste includes that it is "passed on through DNA". (Again, I am not defending the caste system, I am trying to understand your seemingly skewed perception of it. I agree it is detrimental to society, and a bit backwards.) I will try to explain the caste system and its relation to reincarnation.

If an individual who is born to parents who are both Kshatriya (I am using Kshatriya as an arbitrary example) acquires good karma by doing good deeds in his lifetime, he will be reborn into something better. This can mean a variety of things. He can "progress" without necessarily being reborn into a higher caste. It may be that he is born into a more educated family, perhaps a more affluent family, etc. If you want to take the word "progress" to mean that he will be born into a higher caste, then he will be born into a family where his parents are Brahmin, therefore, he is also Brahmin. Your statement "the same person can be born into a family of another caste" is correct. Caste is not something that can be tied to the soul. AND I would like to say, no where in the Vedas, Upanishads, etc. does it say that caste is eternal and tied to the soul. If "God" wants you to be born into a higher caste, or even a lower caste, then you will be born into whichever family. It has nothing to do with DNA..(not that it would matter because theoretically your DNA would be different in each lifetime/birth). To reiterate, Indians do not think that caste is a rank which stays with the soul. Your experiences in this life are limited to this life, and the point of each rebirth is to accrue good karma by doing good deeds and striving for a certain level of enlightenment.

I beg to differ a bit. Though I agree in general that ORGANIZED religion often involves a hierarchy which results in the top tier exploiting the lower tier/s, the fact that the Hindu caste system is in our religious texts (written approximately 1700 BC to 1100BC) provides direct evidence that there is a basis for the caste system and that it was not made up as the religion progressed and became modernized. The point that God Himself (and whether or not he exists is not really the point of my argument) did not write the religious text is irrelevant, as this is the case in all religions (i.e. the Bible was not written by God, nor was the Quran, etc.). Usually it is understood that religious scripture is “passed down” by God via some method (be it a burning bush, or what have you).
Additionally, a Brahmin does not benefit from an individual being a lower caste. By this I mean to say that the highest class does not exploit a lower class (for example, Kshatriyas) in any way. We do not have slavery or exclude them from public places or segregate our community as such. However, we are not supposed to intermarry. This “rule,” if you will, does not benefit us in any way. We get no benefit from having a “higher” status/caste than others. Thus, we do not exploit them, as there is no gain from the caste system. (Especially not in modern India; a millennia ago or so there may have been strictly made distinctions between the groups about lower castes becoming “priests” as I don’t believe non-Brahmins were allowed to perform religious rituals which were strictly outlined in religious texts. However, this does not mean we benefited from this. For example, Brahmin priests did not exploit those who could not perform the rituals themselves (lower castes) by charging money, etc. Similarly, some occupations were more commonly performed by higher castes, usually the ones requiring higher education. But like I said, Brahmins did not force Kshatriyas to be warriors or Vaishyas to be merchants. Again, this was much before the British came.)
I would say there is an exception where it is not necessarily that the upper castes benefited, but rather that the lower castes generally became limited to manual labor type jobs. This is not to say there weren’t higher caste individuals doing these jobs as well. I am referring to the Sudras who were mostly agriculturalists and laborers. Conversely, this does not mean that Brahmins were at the top, occupationally speaking. Kshatriyas were actually the Kings and royal people on the continent (having most of the political power and riches), while Brahmins were priests and teachers and usually lived quite modestly. So it was the second highest caste that had the power.
The other exception is the Untouchables (now called Dalits) who are actually not really considered part of the caste system. They were eschewed from society as people often viewed them as lepers or some such other nonsense. As they were not mentioned in our Vedas, etc, I will refrain from further comment on this point. But as you see, being a Brahmin (highest caste) does not mean you have all the political power or financial power. It is more likely a Kshatriya (2nd highest caste) will be in that position.
Of course in modern society (let us disregard absolutely rural areas for the moment, as the caste system is the least of their worries) in India, many people if not half or more no longer follow the rule about intermarriage. They basically either get arranged marriages (which can be based on caste if the parents want, but are more often based on the individual’s education, family background, and stability) or individuals meet, fall in love, and get married regardless of caste or language.
Last words.. “whoever” wrote the Vedas, Upanishads, etc.. probably did not think of exploitation as the basis for the caste system (I am going with your assumption that no religious text has a divine source). I would assume (after having read the scholarly translations) that they were probably high. And I am a Brahmin Hindu who has not only studied the religion at the university level, but has also visited India numerous times and witnessed every day interactions! If you read the translation, you will notice the mention of “Soma” which I am inclined to think induces hallucinations or euphoria when burnt (which of course is required for many ancient rituals that only holyholyholy priests in the south of India still adhere to). Does that mean I don’t pray? No, I still do, because of Pascal’s Wager (a philosophical argument about God) and family beliefs. But I digress. My point is, Brahmins aren’t running around forming political parties and telling Sudras to come clean our toilets. We don’t exploit them, as this would accrue negative karma, defeating the goal of multiple births.
And sorry this is ridiculously long. Apparently, biochemistry couldn’t keep my attention today.

mOnin873, You miss my point. Let me give an example what I mean: A Kshatriya father can have a Brahmin son. Or a Brahmin father can give birth to an "untouchable". So caste is neither DNA nor Soul based. It is non-material rank based on the values one's karma (actions/deeds). So a relative high or good parent can give birth to a lesser person and vice versa, depending on the very individual person's actions, and therefore his destiny or perhaps any sort of caste (in whatever level) that is at all distinguishable. Thanks for your detailed reply by the way.

You misunderstand the point of the purusha sukta. It is not to enforce class system but to proclaim that everything arose from the one. Not only the classes of humans, but the sun, the moon, the devas and everything arose from this purusha. In fact, I would argue that this verse promotes equality since we all arose from one.
Caste was a very generic classification same way as we have doctors, politicians, actors, farmers etc, today. In ancient India the differentiation was more broad. Whether you see it or not, the generic caste system exists everywhere – the thinkers/planners are the brahmins, the soldiers are the kshatriya, the business owner/ entrepreneurs are the vaishyas and the workers/employees are the shudras. But this classification is based upon a person's qualifications/trainings/nature. The upanishads and bhagavad gita too are very clear in that its is the qualities and nature of a person that define his caste not birth.

Yes, completely agree. There is no such caste system in Christianity / Jewish / Muslim or other religions. Does it mean they have a different God? All Great Men and particularly Saints have said that ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL !! So "Caste-ism" is just a brain child of some evil Hindu religious leader. And the proof is that All men are equal in physical and mental attributes/features etc. and scientifically our DNA is the same.

That entire country needs a boot in the head and booted right into the 21st century - and that goes for every "tradition" and anti-woman "cutuural thing" that they have.

That includes the caste system, segregating themselves from other races (they keep to themselves and do not mix) genital mutilation for women and marrying daughters off for primarily a MONETARY reason.

We have a relatively large Asian Indian population in our town.– they have steadfastly refused to mix with our town on many things, even if it is *only* a street fair sponsored by the town, a town wide cultura event like a free concert or a holiday tree lighting celebration. They won't even attend shows presented by our local community artists.

When in ROME is the motto - again, blame this on not living in the 21st century. It's most annoying.

This slavery is masquerading as a tradition. Perhaps due to extenuating factors like poverty, this started out as a combination of greed & helplessness, but spiraled out of control into a non-stop evil. Putting light and heat on this issue will perhaps give the people a fighting chance to break this spiral, that nobody was strong enough to break. We see this type of thing in many poorer areas of the world, including LatinAmerica, FarEast, where it gets confused as "tradition" when in fact it's an unnatural abberation from normalcy. It got condoned so many generations, that people born into this take it to be the local culture, and even convince outsiders that it is.

Christianity is a revised (read: ripped-off) version of the religion of ancient Greece. Hear of the great flood? There probably was a giant flood over the fertile crescent, but not at the time Christianity was around. Hear of Pandora? Prototype for Eve. Some of the best known stories in the bible were taken directly from other religions to try to kill native religions during the spread of Christianity. Basically, even the argument that the bible is truth and that God is the original is a farce.

And really? All this 'god will punish them' comments are BS. Religion wasnt what birthed this breeding frenzy, or the women's place in Indian culture. It started simply by being poor farmers, where they needed large families to survive, and women were forced to churn out babies like loaves of bread. All countries start out this way. However, now their over-populated and without enough job options they need to get past that first stage of development.
Sure, maybe their religion shapes their traditions, but it isnt what makes them evil or bad. Its the choices men make on their own, and extremists of every religion do crazy things. Instead of blaming the fact that they arent christian, blame the fact that religion exists to begin with.

I totally agree that the Western media is bent on tarnishing the image of countries like India and China by bringing up social issues, whereas they are loaded with their own which they don't want to talk about.Go to Harlem and see. But at the same time let us not forget what has been broiught to light. These are real and needs to be taken care of.

I believe the parents of this village should be punished and publicly humiliated for what they have done to the young girls! We forget that kind of stuff happens right here in the United States! How about we start worrying about us for a bit! i think we deserve it! Don't get me wrong i love knowing that our country gives billions of dollars to people who probably wouldn't help us if our country was hurting! Remember this, The world is like a pack of starving dogs! The moment you stop feeding them they are going to turn on the hand that feeds them without thinking about it!

You are most welcome. But I disagree. A Kshatriya parent cannot foster a Brahmin child, nor any child of a different caste. The child is, by birth, whatever the parents are. If the parents are mixed, the child is mixed. Caste is passed on from parents to children. In some cases, it is easily distinguishable by the last name. I am curious to know why you think it is possible for a parent to have a child who is then some other caste? My point being that once you are born into a caste, if you do good deeds, you can change caste only in the next birth.

I wonder if CNN existed in the 1920's – 1970's in the good old US of A if people would be so keen on these kinds of in-depth reports about live in the grand old South... and the culture of segregation and hatred there? It is easy to air other nations' dirty linen now that you have evolved out of your own ignorance... or have you? What about an in-depth report of the greed and graft that plagued Wall Street and the Banking Fraternity and which has led the world into the worst economic disaster in modern times. Top it all off with a piece on the imperialistic policies of the Bush Administration that openly lied and deceive the International Community in order to start a War that never needed to be, all in the name of National Security and the spread of democracy. WOW.....Now there's a story!

Donna – while I understand your sentiment, it is mainly the fathers that need to be the examples for their sons. They are the ones that (culturally) are the head of the household who the sons try to emulate growing up. SO pick your spouse wisely! His actions determine the course of your family. And men? Please live up to your responsibilities, moral, ethical and spiritual.

We can all sit here in our McMansions and rail against this horror. We can type our quips on news sites. We can all say that we "feel their pain". Does that actually help these girls? We can do more than that. I do. I'm not trying to hold anyone to a standard, but for these girls when it comes to help it's put up or shut up. Help is available and it's called involvement. Our ability to extend aid is inexorable and life giving. Future giving. One less car detailing. One less pair of shoes. One fewer rounds of golf or trip to a restaurant. Is that so much to ask? Search your heart and look at your daughters, nieces, granddaughters and ask yourself if you would let this happen to them. Would you? Think... right now for a moment. It's not a wasted effort even if you help save one child. I have 2 small daughters myself and this story sickens me beyond belief so much that any little sacrifice I make is essential. Nothing to me, but everything to them. We can't just change a culture, but that's no reason to just cast this aside, go sit down to pot roast dinner and go on with our lives without giving it another thought. No, they're not Americans... but they are children. Children and innocence don't recognise international bounderies. Picture YOUR children in the same situation (REALLY think about it) and open your heart.

Traditions are frequently used as an excuse..

There are people who love shark fin soup – their excuse for not stopping their cruel cuisine = tradition. They say, "Shark fin soup is our tradition so back off". I say, you shark fin soup eaters back off. Stop your perverse cuisine. What a stupid vulgar tradition.

There was a case here in Maine where the dad put his little baby's peeing part into his mouth to kiss it. When he was prosecuted the whole Afghani community were up in arms – Tradition, they say. That is a stupid and vulgar tradition. You are in the US, you came here for asylum and it is not acceptable in Islam either. So stop your stupid vulgar tradition.

This Anil kapoor is simply a sellout to western media. He is simply media hungry. Only good thing about this articles is that there is a group of people who are working to make a difference to the lives of these people and they belong to the same country which many on this site are trying to portray as some medieval barbaric nation. Someone knows very well what it means to be medieval and barbaric.

India has multiple faces from very rich to very poor. Important here is India accepts problem understand its wrong and plan to take action. How soon we see impact depends on many factors. But in my mind its better accept and act rather than hide and pretend problem do not exist. Religion is not answers world without religion world will be much better place to live.

I think we'd all be better off if we'd get over the old religious objections to birth control – be it the temporary variety or the permanent variety. Personally I'd like to see the gov't funding the permanent variety for men and women at low costs or no costs. Let the Sunday morning crowd just get all bent out of shape if they like. I don't care. They ought to be worrying about poverty and wars and the long term effects ignorance has on youth. They ought to be supporting education programs, nutrition education (what you eat, how to grow it and how to prepare food), and peace vs wars.

Eliminating unwanted pregnancies would go a long, long way towards helping women around the world. Help them form collectives where they help each other earn a living be it through farming, textiles, medical training, small businesses, small factories – whatever. Let the collectives enable women to replace the need for a husband and the resulting children that these couples can not support. They'd be like nunneries without the religion requirement or a union. Women free to enter and leave them however, only they have to contribute to remain part of the collective.

Whatever the case women around the world get tied down by pregnancies (wanted and unwanted) that they can not easily support alone. I can't tell how many American single mothers I've met over the years struggling to raise children by themselves b/c they chose a reckless teenage/early 20s path. They hooked up with unreliable men who never supported their end of the parental responsibilities. In some cases the children go on the make the same poor choices and live in poverty for it yet another generation. Society ought to help people break this cycle. I know some forces value these desperate peoples' cheap labor but I'd like to see poverty eliminated.

Despite the independence there is a mental slavery to the British (and associated West) masters that the ilks of Kapoor suffer from in India. They will say and do anything – even sell their mothers – to ingratiate with the masters. The Discovery channel level knowledge of the one the most ancient religions does serious disservice to both the religion and its teachings. The fact that poor are oppressed at every level stares at the declining society. It is not the Hinduism or its tradition that summon the crimes. It is the conniving wolves who pretend as its followers. So put the broad brush down and take a deep breath. And now that spade is spade, let's destroy this evil from the society without maligning the ancient culture and its heritage that the masters would love Kapoor, unbeknownst to him, to destroy as well.

I think rich people should take inspiration from people like Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and Anil Kapoor. I think after a certain level it doesn't matter how much money you have, what matters is how good you feel thinking about yourself and that only comes from doing what these people are doing. There is a bit of misrepresentation in this article/program. In Hindu religion, Devdasis were/are the girls donated to the Mundir (temple) for the personal use of the Pujari (priest). This was supposed to bring God's blessings to the household of those who donated the girl. Usually, it was the eldest female offspring of the household.

Whether it's for a one-event money, or a temporary marriage...face it, the USA has the hightest divorce rate in the could say a lot about that and how much honor we have here itself...offering ourselves to one, and then another, and then a third...heck, sleeping with several before even picking one for marriage...for free! The difference?...completely by my own choosing...hmm, wow, means I have sooo much more honor...I chose all the 14 guys I slept with before getting married. Wow, I'm so much more devout and civilized and full of honor than these other's who are poverty-stricken...NOT! I guess....sick, truly, in all regards....both situations. See both sides of it...and yes, even at those ages too, we've got enough problems with honor here in developed countries.! Wake up and smell the coffee. Oh, and for the comment about poverty there?....a LOT of the demand for these girls comes from foreign countries....surprise?...I don't think so.

Wow. Off topic people... Loved that showdown between W247 and VR13 though, might have to say... Do you want the easy way to make money by bringing shame to yourself and others or do the very hard work for a fraction of that money except of bringing no shame to you and others? Just do the easy way first then quit it after you get sick, then quit to your normal life if you have one or start another one. I <3 how you guys (and gals or people) express your opinion. So much fun!

Well done Anil and his team!! And for those who thinks this problem is due to their religion, that's a false assumption. If you want to go with that assumption I have nothing to educate you, but the reality behind it is the class difference prevailing in India. Read Hindu scripts and you will find out that girls were treated with high respect in ancient India. And please don't mix couple of hundred years old Indian's tradition with Hindu tradition. Even the caste system of India, even though it existed since the beginning of Hinduism, but then there wasn't the untouchable stuffs, it (caste system) was just used to justify the individual roles in the community. There are also some great examples that shows us that Caste could be changed with their deeds. It's not Hinduism, its modern India!!

I like how the policemen when in the presence of the actor appear to be very appeasing just because he's a celebrity. It's a common scene in India and other such countries (where corruption is rampant and the rule of law is not enforced).

The Pakistani readers don't understand this. They are laughing with glee which is shameful because we must not delight in the pain suffered by others (even if they are our enemies). What most people do not understand is this : India's robust and vibrant entertainment industry has produced genuine artists who are now powerful, strong , virtuous and heroic enough to tackle deeply entrenched social problems! That is one of the reasons why artists are fostered because they can then tackle very difficult and intractable problems through publicity , finesse and artistic sensitivity. This article shows that India is joining the ranks of the developed nations. Bravo! India. Best of luck to you guys. Your women and people are already very highly educated and now reading this makes us certain you will tackle the more difficult rural cases as well. We are most blessed to have neighbors such as you! may all be relieved of our destructive religions and traditions.

Certainly worth not only pointing out these issues. Though, i.e. there are many college and university students (on about every continent) 'earning a living' with prosti-tution.

And, an example of local surroundings, there is a girl who would like to pursue (in a few years) higher education: theater, music, and similar. Personally, i would rather see her to do so in proper environment where she is looked after, then having to rely on the 'good-will' of se-xually deviant teachers, businessmen, politicians, etc.

And yes, so-called deflowering should be a more or less public, public nevertheless, proper ceremony; certainly not in the meaning of girls being forced to do so one way or another, nor in secret (as in cave and with taboo) anyhow, nor out of stubborness.
Certainly broader topic than what mentioned here..

The tradition is what belongs to this culture. They are not needing the west with its values to come an alter they way they live and have been practicing their religion. The west needs to stay where it belongs and that is in the west and allow people the right and privileges without interference. When did he west become the moral guide for the world?

Actually, this is a "culture" issue. In that village (or any place in any country), this is an accepted way of living, if you can call it that. They grew up in that orientation, and therefore they do not "consider" it degrading or even humiliating. It may not be as dignified as working in an office, but they certainly will put it in the same level as working as a laborer, or a servant for someone else. WE who have been "educated" by other ways, look at this in a different light. Since we consider this improper and shameful, we expect them to think that way too. What we label as apalling or improper is not the same in their culture. Educating them to think & do like we do is a good idea, but we are in some way, trying to change their mindset, and they may even consider that as an infringement in their freedom to choose their way of life.

Thanks for the advice on credit repair on your blog. Some tips i would advice people is always to give up the actual mentality that they can buy today and pay later. Being a society all of us tend to try this for many factors. This includes vacations, furniture, as well as items we'd like. However, you should separate a person's wants from all the needs. When you're working to raise your credit ranking score you really have to make some trade-offs. For example you may shop online to save cash or you can visit second hand shops instead of expensive department stores to get clothing.

    What's up?

I found this article very interesting...please read!

Do you remember the blockbuster hit film The Matrix that was released in 1999? You may not know this, but it has deep spiritual implications concerning the times we are living in and Bible prophecy.

It tells a story of how these "agents" are trying to turn us into machines. We are closer then ever before for this to become a reality when they cause us to receive an implantable microchip in our body during a time when physical money will be no more.

You may have seen on NBC news concerning the implantable RFID microchip that some people are getting put in their hand to make purchases, but did you know this microchip matches perfectly with prophecy in the Bible?

"He (the false prophet who deceives many by his miracles) causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name...

You also may have heard of the legendary number "666" that people have been speculating for possibly thousands of years on what it actually means. This article shares something I haven't seen before, and I don't think there could be any better explanation for what it means to calculate 666. This is no hoax. Very fascinating stuff!

...Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666" (Revelation 13:16-18 NKJV).

To see all the details showing why the Bible foretold of all these things, check out this article!

GOD is sending out His end time warning:

"Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, 'If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name'" (Revelation 14:9-11).

In the Islamic religion they have man called the Mahdi who is known as their messiah of whom they are waiting to take the stage. There are many testimonies from people online who believe this man will be Barack Obama who is to be the biblical Antichrist based off dreams they have received. I myself have had strange dreams about him like no other person. So much so that I decided to share this information.

He came on stage claiming to be a Christian with no affiliation to the Muslim faith...

"In our lives, Michelle and I have been strengthened by our Christian faith. But there have been times where my faith has been questioned - by people who don't know me - or they've said that I adhere to a different religion, as if that were somehow a bad thing," – Barack Obama

...but was later revealed by his own family members that he indeed is a devout Muslim.

So what's in the name? The meaning of someones name can say a lot about a person. God throughout history has given names to people that have a specific meaning tied to their lives. How about the name Barack Obama? Let us take a look at what may be hiding beneath the surface...

"And He (Jesus) said to them (His disciples), 'I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven'" (Luke 10:18).

In the Hebrew language we can uncover the meaning behind the name Barack Obama.

Barack, also transliterated as Baraq, in Hebrew is: lightning

    baraq – Biblical definition:

From Strongs H1299; lightning; by analogy a gleam; concretely a flashing sword: – bright, glitter (-ing, sword), lightning. (Strongs Hebrew word H1300 baraq baw-rawk')

Barak 'O'bamah, The use of bamah is used to refer to the "heights" of Heaven.

    bamah – Biblical definition:

From an unused root (meaning to be high); an elevation: – height, high place, wave. (Strongs Hebrew word H1116 bamah baw-maw')

The day following the election of Barack Obama (11/04/08), the winning pick 3 lotto numbers in Illinois (Obama's home state) for 11/5/08 were 666.

Obama was a U.S. senator for Illinois, and his zip code was 60606.

Seek Jesus while He may be found...repent, confess and forsake your sins and trust in the savior! Jesus says we must be born again by His Holy Spirit to enter the kingdom of God...God bless!

I have learned a few important things as a result of your post. I would also like to state that there may be a situation where you will make application for a loan and do not need a cosigner such as a Federal Student Aid Loan. But when you are getting credit through a classic creditor then you need to be able to have a co-signer ready to allow you to. The lenders may base any decision on a few factors but the biggest will be your credit rating. There are some creditors that will likewise look at your work history and decide based on this but in almost all cases it will hinge on your report.

It was like we have been all working together against the Lunar Poker vendor!
All people began to high five and go crazy every time I received the Super guess, which happened a number of instances over what appeared like several hours
at the table. Wouldn’t you comprehend it, I received the
Super Wager on my girlfriend’s hand! All of us determined to position a wager on the Tremendous Guess option, which I observed paid out if
you’re first hand matched one of many eight profitable super mixtures.
I was feeling adventurous, so I placed a guess on everybody’s Tremendous
on the very first hand. Everybody in our group determined to throw
of their money on the Super Guess motion, even the older gentleman at
the end of the table. My Tremendous was serving to
the entire table win, which even earned me several drinks from the older gentleman at the tip of
the table. The Lunar Poker table had 5 seats, and one was already occupied by an older gentleman.

The 5 Card Draw Poker desk was really called Lunar Poker, a sport that
none of us had ever played before. As we walked by means of the casino floor, we observed an indication that said 5
Card Draw Poker, and since we had each been taking part in draw poker for years, we decided to present
it a shot. The dealer, who was very pleasant, invited us
to sit down right down to a game of Lunar Poker, explaining that this sport was
in many ways similar to the draw poker we had all
played as children. We had all sat in a draw poker recreation or two, and determined there
would be no hurt in giving this game a try, a minimum of for a hand or two.

He gladly accepted, and we all sat down and put up a $5 Ante every.
My girlfriend, myself and one other couple determined to take a stroll down to the casino shortly
after dinner. A member of the opposite couple noticed the Tremendous Bet option, which appeared to have much greater payout odds than the other
poker video games we had been used to.

Many novices even do the good factor and immerse themselves in a no-restrict
poker e-book or two to refine their abilities, and they might even have some success at Sit ‘n Gos
or multi-desk tournaments. It’s a pure progression seeing as how many newbies have gone from the
couch to the computer, studying tournament poker
from professionals and lucky amateurs on numerous televised
occasions. Many inexperienced players have an all-in mentality that stems from free tournament play.
As an alternative of going all-in and chasing out worse fingers when you’ve
Aces or danger going broke when you’ve acquired Jacks,
why not make a typical raise of 3 or 4 occasions the massive blind
and re-consider the situation on the flop? Another cash recreation mistake that many
tournament players make is playing too aggressively too often. Nevertheless, many
of these players spill over into the no-restrict facet money
