Mexican police arrest more than 1,000 in human trafficking raids

Mexico City - Authorities in Ciudad Juarez arrested more than 1,000 people over the weekend in an operation aimed at cracking down on human trafficking, police said.

Federal police said raids in two dozen bars, hotels and boarding houses netted arrests of 500 men and 530 women they suspect are connected with human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

In addition, 20 female minors were rescued, police said.

At least 300 federal police officers were involved in the nine-hour sweep, which began Friday night and ended early Saturday morning, the Chihuahua state Attorney General's Office said in a statement.

Authorities said the operation was part of Mexico's AMBER Alert program, created to help find missing children.

Violence-plagued Ciudad Juarez shares a border with El Paso, Texas.

Earlier this month Mexican President Felipe Calderon approved several changes to the country's constitution aimed at cracking down on human trafficking - one that requires those accused of human trafficking to be imprisoned during trials, and one that guarantees anonymity of victims who denounce the crime.

Calderon gave Mexico's Congress 180 days to approve a new nationwide human trafficking law that will reform and streamline how authorities handle such cases across the country.

With increasing frequency, he said, criminal organizations that ship and sell drugs and weapons have added human trafficking to their repertoire.

"There are thousands and thousands of cases, in a society that is still unaware of the seriousness of this crime," he said. "We have to break through this curtain ... that is hiding from the Mexicans a criminal reality that is in front of us."

You mean like all the illegal aliens who knew it was illegal to jump the border and work but just did it anyways? Or do you refer to the illegals that jump the border, drive unlicensed and uninsured knowing it is wrong but they do what that want regardless? Looks to me like they brought their own disregard for law and order with them.

Not all of Mexico is filled with violence. My sister and her family have lived in the Guanojuato district for the last year and it has been more peaceful than here in the US. In the last year there has been only ONE homicide in her area. Their biggest problem is graffiti by local teens.
Yes Juarez has some huge problems. Ditto for several border cities, Guadalajara and Mexico City...but Mexico is a large country and there are a lot of places that don't have the problems we hear about.

There are certains regions in Mexico where the violence is less frequent. I used to live in the city of Irapuato, GTO. The reality is that cartels do conduct there activities in these areas and only act when pressed by the police. A prime example would be when several men stormed the local police station and threw grenades in response to the arrest of a fellow drug member. I love the country of Mexico, but in order to restore social stability the US and Mex need mutual cooperation in stopping the drug war.

Human trafficking started because American stole Mexico's land from them. To draw a line in someone elses country that you stole and then call those natives illegal is the problem here, not the smugglers. If America had not stolen its land, they would not have this problem..

Get your facts straight friend. Or should I say "Remember the Alamo." Not everything is the United States fault friend. Texas was a free and independent nation. It chose to join the United States later. And is the only state that can leave the union. So friend get your fact straight.

      July 25, 2011 at 3:06 pm | Reply
      • Norm

Actually SamuelFacts, you may want to reread your history books. There are some partial truths in your statements, but only partial. And no, Texas can not just up and leave the Union. Aside from the legality of trying to secede, Texas would be unable to protect itself as an independent country, would lose all Federal systems, i.e. roads, postal systems, court systems, military bases and the communities that are pretty much funded by them, Medicare, Social Security, the list goes on and on. It is a myth that Texas can just up and vote to seceed from the union and would be viewed as the ultimate treasonous activity by the rest of the country.

        July 25, 2011 at 4:55 pm |
      • crykyt

There is no law forbidding or allowing secession. If Texas or any other state decides to secede, the resulting peaceful separation or war will depend not on law, but on the will of whomever happens to be Commander-in-Chief at the time.

        July 25, 2011 at 6:24 pm |
      • Brian from Chicago

I grew up in Texas. I feel that Texas was a proxy war for the US to counter Spanish influence. I also think that California would very likely have remained part of what we now call Mexico if the Texas war hadn't taken place, but I won't jump to the conclusion that the US planned for that.

See, everyone? This is what it looks like when you DON'T jump to a conclusion.

        July 25, 2011 at 7:10 pm |

it will make the offer at 3 p.m. today at a fixed rate of 4.25 percent. Banks yeasdrety deposited a record 102.8 billion euros with the ECB overnight and borrowed 15.9 billion euros at the emergency marginal rate, the most since 2002. The ECB's deposit rate is 3.25 percent and the marginal lending rate is 5.25 percent. We're seeing a kind of market failure, said Michael Schubert, an economist at Commerzbank AG in Frankfurt. The ECB can do nothing but treat the symptoms. The situation won't normalize as long as we see negative surprises in the financial sector. Commercial banks are refusing to lend to each other after the U.S. housing slump caused the collapse of New York-based Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. and forced governments to bail out banks in the U.S. and Europe. Central banks including the Federal Reserve and the ECB are injecting billions into global money markets in an effort to keep them functioning. The Frankfurt-based ECB today raised the amount of dollars it is offering banks overnight to $50 billion from yeasdrety's $30 billion. It allotted the full $50 billion after banks bid for a total of $70.9 billion.'Congress should just adjourn today and go do Jello shots. Something's about to blow overseas that will undo in 10 minutes whatever fix these guys are trying to piece together.

The myth that illegal aliens only hold jobs that American workers won’t do is just that — a myth. Recent studies estimate that 20 percent of cooks, 25 percent of construction workers, 22 percent of maids and housekeeping personnel, and 25 percent of groundskeepers are illegal aliens. In addition, 40 percent of illegal aliens are visa overstays, many of whom take high-end jobs from Americans.
When fast-food company Chipotle was audited and hundreds of its illegal workers were fired, American citizens lined up the next day for a chance to work at those jobs. . .
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services data from last year show that 98.3 percent of employees were confirmed as work-authorized instantly or within 24 hours using E-Verify. A 2009 report by research firm Westat found that those eligible to work are immediately confirmed 99.5 percent of the time.
E-Verify is free, very accurate and reduces paperwork for American businesses.
Please put your efforts into helping the truly down and out Americans. Please put your efforts in helping mothers, fathers, teenagers find work. There are generations of families who cannot compete with the under the table dealings of illegal’s and have gone out of business. Fax your representative today. Faxes and calls work and are free at Numbers…..(look it up and just do it!)

Thank you for pointing out what almost everyone commenting seemed to miss. This is about human trafficking – slave trade. I worry that Americans are very unaware of the magnitude of this problem around the world and in this country. While this article is not extensive enough to know the full range of the types of trafficking these 1000+ people were involved in it is not about individuals choosing to enter the US illegally. Trafficking typically includes kidnapping or deception and most often the trafficked are young women. These are people being held against their will through force, real threats, drug control and brain washing among other strategies. Those horror stories of kidnapped daughters in movies and on tv are not just the result of someone's sick imagination. Human slavery persists and includes slave labor on plantations, indentured servitude that is never satisfied in business, and sex trades. It is a global issue and does affect us locally, yet we seem to hear so little about it that we don't even get it when we read an article about it in the news. Sad.

Why dont they just legalize prostitution so those who want to do that kind of work can get paid a fair price and get health checks because you know that there are all kinds of std giving to thse people who are being force to live this evil lifestyle. Just a bunch of preverts that dont have a problem having sex with these people but once there done they get a attitude and want to act racist hey why act better then someone after you use them for your prevert needs if thats the case dont sleep with them do them a favor.

Not saying we should have the same laws as Mexico. But now its vital for the US to step up. Human trafficking happens everyday here in the States and most citizens don't even know it. Its not some far away, third world problem. Its right here. "Good job, Mexico." Maybe they can say the same of us soon.

what? why did you say anonymity for victims who denounce the crime. did you leave out some words in that sentence.
did you mean some of those doing the trafficking are victims and you will give them anonymity if they denounce the crime as not something they wanted to make money and jobs in etc. or did you really mean that those victims who say that stuff didn't happen to them will get new names and addresses and protection if they don't pursue charges against the states too for their ignoring and also purposeful involvement. i mean the same thing is happening up in this area to and i kind of sense with brutal beatings and repeated death that attitude. i was kind of getting the hint they were trying to pass on to me regularly. it was more than extra sensory perception. i mean i didn't need to put my psychic antennas up martian style or anything like that. maybe at the bottom of this major obtrusive invasionary conspiracy there is really some kind of like a real estate industry wealth game moving everybody around everywhere. makes that market super hot. couldn't be just about renting house and apt. movers industry. lot of them don't have furniture so it may not be the latter. is that the jewish leagues revenge to make us all wander in the desert or something. you shouldn't have put mexico on your flaghead CNN it drew negative attention i beleive. saying international was adequate.and i repeat a previous comment, how is it they get told where the mass graving victims are not long after they have been killed. who points to them the chinese or the british or a mob of negros with them. it usually takes decades or more to discover a mass grave. sometimes centuries sometimes its never discovered. this pointing to the mass graving victims has happened repeatedly 6 to 7 times already – i think more than that. furthermore the drug bosses wouldn't mass grave their own type of people that is utter nonsense what was reported, so it isn't druggy types getting mass graved ones with tattoos and leather jackets. – men types – do you have a gay obstinate control movement going on there as well perhaps. from reports it looked like they were all men mass graved. same with libya. and other countries. gays are just male prostitution – men who play every kind of pervert involved corrupt trickery to make wealth and other gains, prostitutes engage young men to do sex acts of more perverse nature to initiate them quite often. young meaning grade schoolers. you are just part of the prostitution problems you are all working on my back together all involved in the same criminal abuse means to criminal ends.and you do sleep with women you just use homosexual perversion against all ages to intimidate and push your weight around. there are hardly any of you who are gay in fact. even after you transgender you still want a woman to damn sleep with or you would find a fucking man to sleep with as a transgender.you play the game on the man as a transgender to freak him out and crook with the other kinds but you do end up shacking up with a woman so where is the homosexualness in that. i remember now you had Canada up on your flag of CNN internet cover page. that was when the heavier murdering was going on in this country. except i can't recall if it was only Canada there for sure. explain yourselves please. was that secret operation postings by the press leagues in conjunction with you know who.

Where does the richest man in the world live? US? Europe? Saudia Arbia? No, he lives in Mexico! He made 57 billion dollars from telecommunications. Why are these Mexican people so poor that they have to sell young girls? It doesn't look like democracy is trickling down much money to the poor in Mexico. But it is causing a flood in the pockets of the wealthy. Now the jobs in Mexico go to China. Tomorrow they will be selling their sisters.

Faxes and calls work and are free at NumbersUSA…..(there is POWER in Numbers, look it up and just do it!)

The problem is not the people; they are mostly great. The problem is the constant rapid inflow. I am not sure that e-verify is related to the problem? However, illegals really are taking jobs that out kids could use for a start. They are also taking construction jobs, etc. However, we must be cautious. We cannot deport 30 or 40 million people (not 12 like the govt. says) without committing a monstrous crime. However, suppose we simply notified each employer that has people already employed with a name which does not match their SS# to certify them for a work permit. They we could provided for adequate fines for any employer hiring new, non-agricultural field workers, people without proper credentials. The inflow would stop and unemployment would start going down. Would wages go up and caused a little inflation? They would have to go up a lot to adjust for the amount that housing inflation has gotten ahead of wages.

Actually this is really strange. 1000 people arrested and only 20 victims rescued? How is that possible? Sounds like the Mex Pres has come up with a way to round up who ever he wants, accuse them of being involved in human trafficking and then send them to jail awaiting a trial to prove that they arent involved, except if and when the trial would happen is up to the government. So basically its a witch hunt law that allows anyone to be thrown in jail for practically ever with out ever being proven guilty. Human trafficking is one of the worst blights the human race has known, but these actions really dont appear to have anything to do with actually confronting the problem.

All of this (drugs, human trafficking, violence etc) is a direct result of having unsecured borders and the non-enforcement of federal laws. As well as every US politician violating their oath of office. There is no other rational explanation.

That is great Mexico!! Now how about US authorities doing the same here. There has been human trafficking going on across the street from my house. During a certain time of year, my illegal neighbors leave for the weekend only to return with a SUV full of new faces. And after several weeks they disperse into our community and a new batch is brought in the next month. I have called ICE, but they will not do anything about it. So what are we paying them for?

They must have taken their cell #'s and said we'll get back to you later!! Or perhaps they sent them single file thru the jail and out the back door!! Seems most of them eventually get away anyway!
