More than 500 slaves rescued from brick kilns

From CNN's Mallika Kapur

Chennai, India - Beaten with rods, belts and subjected to other forms of abuse, the bonded laborers toiled away in a tiny brick kiln in southern India day after day with little hope of freedom and escape.

But on a tip, officials from the government of Tamil Nadu state in India raided the kiln. What they found shocked them: More than 500 people living and working under a brutal and oppressive system.

"We worked all the time. We would only stop to eat," says 20-year-old Dambru Jani, who was rescued in the raid. "If we tried to rest, they'd abuse us and force us to work again."

Saju Mathew is the national director for the International Justice Mission, the human rights group that assisted the government with the raid. He said that even though India banned bonded labor in 1976, the practice of paying back a loan or advance with work, not money, still exists.

"The key thing you look for is, are they free?" says Mathew. "What you realize in bonded labor is that the owner decides when they eat, when they sleep, whether they are free to leave or not. All the terms of their life are now dictated by the owner."

In this instance, the laborers were given a cash advance of 10,000 rupees, or about $225, each. They were then taken hundreds of miles away from home to work at the brick kiln.

Which is where government official S. Kandaswamy, along with police authorities and the International Justice Mission, raided the kiln and took the owner by surprise. The raiders themselves were taken aback, too. Expecting to find around 200 people inside, they found instead more than 500, including women and children.

"More than 14 hours a day they are working," Kandaswamy said. "Sometimes, they are being beaten, and some harassment was noted by the laborers. No medical facilities. ... Bonded labor is against humanity, so it has to be curbed."

The owner of the brick kiln was held and released. The authorities have three months to file charges.

The government organized trucks to send the laborers to a school nearby, where they were given meals, police protection, medical treatment and counseling. They also given a certificate of freedom and a thousand rupees, or about $25, which is the first installment of rehabilitation funds the government will provide.

Special trains were also organized which gave the freed workers a ticket home.

Part 2: CNN's Mallika Kapur travels to the workers' homes to see how they're coping after being rescued.

How about paying them back their salaries?

    June 29, 2011 at 8:08 am | Reply

That will not happen and you noticed the government has 3 months to file charges or accept enough bribes to not press charges. He is still in business. They need the bricks-demand is high. Greed dictates how that demand is met and who profits the most.

This is India. NOthing will happen. The government employeee who caught the owner he will be released in no time also the case will be dropped as well. Because the owner will bribe the gov't employee and everything would be back to where it was. But not instead of 500 it'll be 1000. India is called a free country. Free from the Great Britain but not from the effed up government. Also the Indian Embassy in US (especially Washington D.C) they treat all customers like shit.

Jesus on the other hand probably was a middle eastern "brown person" and taught a message of forgiveness. Don't you remember, "Do unto others......... "

I was thinking as I read the article: that sounds about like an American company before Christmas: "volunteers" working 14 hour days with no breaks, on your feet, and can't stop. Of course, we have benefits, but no pensions, and if we save, that goes away in stock prices falling. Used to be that banks gave 6 percent interest. Now they say save, but they have almost no interest on FDIC protected savings, and no protection on anything else. Why are we allowing ourselves to be enslaved by these big corporations?

Bonded labor is slavery and should be called bonded slavery, not bonded labor. Forced slavery is when the victim is captured against their will to be placed into a forced labor situation. Bonded labor is when the victim is tricked into the same situation by a cash advance.

The only idiocy I see here is in your failed atheist logic. You obviously do not understand the freedom that comes from this particular faith. Christianity would do wonders for the convoluted mess that Hinduism has made out of Indian society and culture.

JustEven, Really? you really think so? Have you ever seen a Bagavadgita? I suggest you pick one one up and go through. I won't say you will be enlightened as that would be super stretch for you, but may be just may be, you will be able to peek your head out of the ignorant bliss you are completely immersed in.

While the Midival world based on skewed ideologies beat each other up, India prosphered as their belifs doesn't make them go through the in secure ideology of forcing their views on others. Hinduism helped India survive numerous invasion by self centered masses with ridiculous beliefs. In fact Hinduism is not some thing that you can tie up into a simple segregating term such a religion. Hinduism is not a religion, it is a life style, despite which god one prays to as long as they believe in the term "Manava Seve Madhava Seva" (Helping fellow being is helping God) they are Hindus. This is reason why Indian Muslims don't succumb to the turmoil that engulfed the rest of the Islamic world and Indians as Hindus, Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, and Jews are able to survive in harmony and peace. Don't bring your silly religious propaganda into this. You can't compare these silly monotheistic religions to Hinduism as these religions first don't understand the concept of God. Hinduism sees God every where and in everything, that is the simple reason why it survived thousands or years of ideological invasions by self serving cultures. Coming to the article, these kind of things are happening all over the world, as long as Man acts on his selfish terms, these will repeat. Our job as humans is not to succumb to such temptations and move forward united against these atrocities .

Christianity is all about slavery, have you read the old testament. The white people in colonial times in the US used the bible to reason why slavery was all right. I don't know where you got atheism out of the original statement, but I am an atheist and all that means is that there hasn't been sufficient evidence to support a divine being idea. As far as slavery, most atheist are against it, but slavery and atheism are not intertwined subjects.

        June 29, 2011 at 10:51 am |
      • Ryan in Michigan

@Waves – Since we're talking Old Testament, let me bring up the Atheists Old Testament, called the Origin of Species, which also supports slavery. It claims that people of African and Australian Aboriginal origin are considered between chimpanzees and neanderthals on the evolutionary ladder and can be kept as pets or working stock (in essence, livestock). Therefore, Atheism is all about slavery as well. Many of the ships that brought over slaves from Africa also brought Charles Darwins book and ideals along with them.

Indian Muslims have avoided that? You've got to be kidding me. Violent (commonly involving fatalities) conflicts between Muslims and Hindus make the news pretty regularly. Seems like it's usually the Muslims who start it, but the Hindus are quite ready to retaliate. I realize this isn't *all* Muslims or *all* Hindus, but there are certainly people within those faith traditions who are willing to use violence, so don't try to frame it as if that's not true.

The Koran (or however you care to romanize the spelling) essentially calls for spreading Islam by any means necessary. People of "The Book" (that is, Jews and Christians) are supposed to be tolerated and allowed to practice their religion if they don't convert (but that seems to be honored more in the breach than in the observance), but people not "The Book" (and this would include Hindus), well, it's open season if they refuse to accept Islam from their conquerors.

Before anyone jumps on me, yes, I realize many Muslims today do not practice this (going out and conquering lands and converting them at gunpoint) but there are certainly some who still try, and others who sympathize with them. At the same time, it remains pretty difficult to be a Christian in a Muslim country, and hard enough to call impossible to be a Jew in Muslim countries (although this is not in keeping with what the Koran prescribes for the treatment of Christians and Jews in Muslim territories).

4.) Technically speaking the Bible does not clearly state that slavery is wrong. In fact there are several passages on how a slave is supposed to behave.

Christians who are slaves should give their masters full respect so that the name of God and his teaching will not be shamed. If your master is a Christian, that is no excuse for being disrespectful. You should work all the harder because you are helping another believer by your efforts. Teach these truths, Timothy, and encourage everyone to obey them. (1 Timothy 6:1-2 NLT)

      Hey JustEven and Zelda,
How about I throw some light into history as I understand that you are very poor at it. The same bible reading Christians slaved India for 350 years and India got its independence in 1947 after lot of hesitation by the British. You religious zealots do not think that one religion is superior to others.

Let's stick with the topic. If you want to know what kind of slavery exists in a most modern country like US listen your radio once in while. Or Read a book by title "Tomatoland". The abusive slavery methods is what serving TOMATO needs your fastfood chains to everyday kitchens. In the bad lands of Florida where tomatoes are grown round the year on sandy soil are being picked by thousands of asian slaves. I am not talking about 180, 1990's.. this is still happening NOW as of 2011. This is just one kind of crop, imagine what's with dozens of other labor intensive crops. So, why don't you religious zealots drop your scriptures and visit those places to help the situation.

Having lived in India for two years, Tamil Nadu, actually, and having attended church service there almost every week, I can't say that the congregation was any better than those who weren't Christian. Atrocities can be commited by either side, not that this is relative to the article at all, and having a Bible does not protect you against what I assume you would label as sin. Their "own language" is Tamil, by the way, at least in Tamil Nadu.

Btw i've heard from so many sales people about how they dread Chinese, Indian, and Jewish people. I wonder if some Jews feel Jewed by Chinese or Indians sometimes feel that Chinese or Jewish people are so cheap. In general, these people are so tight with their money, it's not funny. "...They should be given Bibles in their own languages and crush forever the self-defeating ideology that hardship from injustice is a fate."

You mean the same Bible that was in vogue in the US when good christians and founding fathers of the US owned slaves? The same Bible that was used by the White evangelists to enslave Africans? Here is what Bishop Desmond Tutu (the Noble Laureate) said of the Bible and the White Man, during his struggles against apartheid in South Africa: "When the White Missionaries first came to Africa, they had the Bible and we had the land. Today we have the Bible, and they our land".

Zelda, how about trying some other Book, instead of the Bible. The Bible is a proven and effective tool FOR promoting slavery. Pastors and Priests in the US borrowed heavily from the Bible to mentally enslave the Black slaves in the US. When the slaves cried out to the Pastors as to how God and the Bible justified the horrors perpetrated on the slaves by their Christian White masters, the Pastors had this to tell the slaves, "Serve your white masters on earth, as you would serve your heavenly master after death". In other words, slavery was an opportunity provided to the black slaves to sharpen their devotion to their human masters here on earth, as a rite of passage, to be able to serve the Lord after death. The underlying message was to NEVER STEAL away to freedom from their white masters.

Since we are at it, one of our very super Christian Founding fathers who helped author seminal documents like the 'Declaration of Independence' and treatises on human rights and who declared that 'All men are born equal', himself owned slaves. Not only was he a strict slave owner, he was infamous for sexual dalliance with some of his female slaves, and even sired illegitimate slave children from some of his slave women. As you can well see, the Bible didnt do much to defang slavery here in the US. So I wouldnt go Bible peddling as a cure for bonded laborers in India just yet.

If it helps you sleep better tonight, let me enlighten you that a person of the lowest caste authored the Indian constitution, people from the lowest caste in India have become President. The Chief Minister (Governor as they are referred to in the US) of INdia's largest state is a woman from a low caste.... the American equivalent would be California having a Black woman governor 60 years after independence...that would be 1836, when infact they were busy picking cotton in slave farms. Why 1836, and why 60 years after independence, well here in the US you had 'Whites only' signboards as recently as 60 years ago. Black soldiers from the 'Negro regiment' of the US Army, were not allowed to drink from 'Whites only' faucets in train stations, even when they were being mobilized for war overseas...more than 150 years after independence. Do you know that even TODAY, in this day and age, there is a US Army base in the South were onofficial 'segregation' is prevalent?! The same black/white soldiers who do not mingle in that base unless officially required while in that base, become buddies when transferred to other bases...such is the stranglehold of centuries old tradition of segregation that continues to rear its head in that US Army base to this day.

In other words, my dear friend, when you point a finger at someone else, you may inadvertently have two of your own fingers pointing right back at you. For all its greatness and grandeur, the US isnt exactly the poster child of 'human rights' that Americans like to project themselves to be. At least not to the extent that merits the kind of brash and ignorant arrogance that comes naturally to you.

Most religions have goofed up history including Christianity. That is because all are created by men. All contain basic human wisdoms along with a lot of crap. Have to say though that India's caste system has to go. No place for that kind of thinking in a free society. Europe thought the same way once and you were born into your station in life with very little means of changing it. We still fight or need to fight those tendencies.

"The owner was set free. I just dont get it!"

Stop wracking your brains too hard. People here in the US are routinely 'set free' by the US court system, after the accused pay BAIL. I am sure you do GET IT when crooks in the US bail themselves out, right?

Now just use the same 'get it' part of your brain to extend the same courtesy to the crooks in India who use their money to furnish bail and be 'set free', till they have their day in court.

That 'set free' is nothing but 'Bail'. The journalist is obviously trying to sensationalize, else they would have used 'out on bail' instead of 'set free'. These journalists know how to push the buttons of the uninformed to get the waterworks going.

  8. International Dalit Solidarity Network

Despite being prohibited in many countries, slavery is widespread in South Asia. Bonded labour, in which a person is bonded by a loan advance taken against their work, resulting in a loss of control over labour conditions and terms of work, is rooted in the caste system and related types of customary feudal agricultural relationships.

Dalit bonded labourers: Those who are employed as bonded labourers in South Asia are predominantly Dalits, also known as ‘untouchables’. According to an Anti Slavery International report, the vast majority (80%-98%) of bonded labourers are either from communities designated as “untouchable” or from indigenous communities. Weak economic positions and lack of access to resources increase Dalits' dependence on wage labour. Extreme poverty forces Dalits to take up loans and they hold no other assets to lever their debt other than their labour. In addition to poverty, practices of social exclusion of Dalits push them into bondage.

When Dalits try to exercise their rights or resist abuse and exploitation, they are faced with extremely hostile and sometimes brutal resistance by the higher caste villagers that uphold the hierarchy. Consequently, when Dalits resist their oppression, they risk complete boycott, cutting them off from land use, access to markets and employment. Other retaliations against Dalit assertion include killings, gang rapes, looting and arson.

To Zelda – oh really! if bible is the answer to all the problem of the world then why not Tora, Kuran, Gita, and other religious scriptures? No true religion is superior to another, as all true religious teaching teaches same basic things. And if BIBLE is the solution then there would be no slave in USA and other parts of the world. Not many decades ago slavery in USA is an example. People who read BIBLE were the biggest slave owners......

As an American and a Christian, I would point out that the evangelical far right is a small but very vocal minority of the faith that is practiced privetly by most of its adherents. Just as all Muslims are not terrorists, all christians are not intollerant. That is why the founding fathers of America (who were largely humanists, i.e. Payne) made such a point of prohibiting the endorsement or suppression of any particular faith. This is admittedly a work in progress, but most of us are trying and we have not changed the constitution yet.

@Sheriff – It seems Atheists are just as intolerant, if not more so. They refuse to tolerate any religion beyond their own, strike out against other religions very vocally, and force their ideals upon our children in public schools.

@syama – Really? What about the slave owners who ran entire countries? People who had them working on commune farms in Russia, China, and other places. People like Vladimir Lenin, Josef Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao Zedong, and Kim Jong Il. It seems that a slave owner from the 18th Century with, at most, a thousand slaves would hardly compare (logically, not morally) to the Atheist men of the 19th Century with millions upon millions of slave workers running their countries for them.

While, other students with great scores lose out on the admission, dalits still get in to schools and colleges due to this law passed by Gandhi...

If you don't think so, travel in the slums around the world. Keep to the point of the article. Someone told those people to take the money and do the work. Usually it is their own kin. Life is hard and there are too many people on the planet and too few resourses. WWWIII will happen for these two main reasons-survival of a nation and resources required.

I do agree that welfare system needs to be changed to be more of a outlet to get people back on their feet and less of a never ending financial umbilical cord. I don't put much faith in complete capitalism (sp?) nor do I put faith in complete socialism, I believe a balance is the best way to go. I disagree with the republican and tea party because they both use fear as a tool.

I am not sure if we need to be happy that these people are rescued. I would say we need to be more cautious. We have a corrupt government in India which is being controlled by Sonia Gandhi (she somehow got the Gandhi name attached to herself, making people believe she is a Gandhian!). What will happen next is that all the criminals who are "caught" will have to pay bribes, depending upon the crimes and then there will be a "repercussion". All these people who are caught will go back with vengence to the villages and hound the men, women and children. At that time, neither CNN, nor Mallika Kapur, nor Saju Mathew will be there. For CNN and all others, they have gotten the limelight, made their money. To be honest, the people who are rescued have moved into the fire from the frying pan. The fire will burn them later. And when that happens, none of us will know. The cycle continues. We need India to be taken over by the army. About time.

All these arguments based on religion are stupid. In the end, God=LOVE, nature = LOVE, peace = LOVE. At least one of these three components will stick out in someone's belief system no matter if you're a christian, a buddhist or an aethist etc. If you believe in evil, well then, you are evil if you worhip torture, hatred, murder and greed. These fights over religion are a waste of time....who was here first, the chicken or the egg. Humans EVOLVED though trial and error, though survival of the fittest (im throwing in the Darwanian philosophy here because organisms including bacteria, plants, diseases, brains, neurology, history, EVERYTHING EVOLVES and the strongest ideas or organisms survive). We are HUMAN, we are NOT PERFECT. But we can reach out for perfection and always learn from our experince and thorugh others. We can read books, and we should be open to other cultures, other beliefs, other views. We don't have to agree with them, but the more we know, the more we learn, the more powerful we are becuase we are growing within. So now some people learned that bonded labor still exists; that's great that we all learned it, but now, someone might do something about it and help in some way. Every little act counts. So instead of closing your mind and just believing in one thing and not even opening that thick skull of yours to see, feel and try to understand anyone else other than you, reach out and open that door to expand of what you know about the world.

There are many thousands of bonded laborers from India working in Dubai. They were shipped there to do construction, and they are not allowed to leave until they pay back the advance they were given. The problem is, because of the financial crisis, there is no work for them, so they aren't getting paid. They are forced to live in labor camps, and their passports were confiscated and will only be returned when their advance is paid in full...which they can't do as long as they are not allowed to work. On top of that, they are charged for room and board, which is added to the bill they must repay before their passport will be returned.

Yes. India has a long way to go. However, it is in a much better shape than its neighbor Pakistan. We paid them $20 billion. They still are biting the hand which feeds them. There they want to execute a woman under some blasphemy law just because she is Christian. Evolution seems to have stopped in Pakistan. India has its own issues but it still seems much more advanced than Pakistan.

Oh yes India is so much more advanced than Pakistan.
That's why India has almost double the poverty rate of Pakistan.
41.6% of India lives on less than $1.25 a day. The corresponding percentage in Pakistan is 22.5%.

And India is the worst ranking Asian country on the hunger index. The only countries with worse hunger than India are in sub-saharan Africa.

America continues to have its own very profitable form of slavery. This is called ALIMONY. This is where a man is captured to be a slave after a failed marriage. Is major flaw is studying hard in school and sacrificing for his family. He is then forced to be the slave of his ex wife–a human who has sworn to be his enemy even if he just wants to get on with his life. The CNN "freedom project" never talks about alimony clearly violates the 13th amendment of the US constitution. Some will say no one who is subjected to alimony slavery is forced to work. Well, if you are a man in America and you don't work, you don't eat. Eating is a necessity for life. You cannot lock a bunch of people in a room and drop a canister of poison gas in it and then claim "no one forced them to breathe; they chose to breathe of their own free will". Please end this hideous act of slavery and involuntary servitude along with sex slaves, child slaves and all other forms of slavery.

I'm sorry, but there is NOTHING shocking about this. I'm an American living in Bangalore, India. This is happening on every other street corner and at every construction site throughout India. If you don't see this then you're NOT paying attention. And the government officials don't give a hoot about it! This article is a joke! The government is a huge part of the problem why this problem persists. This article gives a false sense that government officials care about the disenfranchised of India. A vast majority of them do not. It's why the system is so prevalent.

CNN and Mallika Kapoor should first look at the indirect bonded labor system in the US. Immigration is its name. With all the technology in the world, do you think US cannot prevent illegal immigrants from entering the country? They want illegal immigrants do their shitty jobs. Why is US neither legalizing nor deporting illegal immigrants but let them always live under uncertainty. So that they can be exploited by its citizens ? Several illegals are living in dumps and working multiple jobs, long hours, no benefits. How is this any different from the Brick Kiln in India?

ok nice start but what about the other "30million" slave in india? hmm. i was horrified the last time i was in india. there was a family that was clearly not poor. any way so this family mom, dad, and toddler, and a girl no older then 12 in bleached out old clothes "was the nanny/maid/house keeper"(she very dark skinned where as the family was very light skinned) they where out at the open air market. i pointed out this family to my companion and asked if she thought that the girl was part of that family. well the answer was yes! then i said 'lets just tag along and watch'(i love watching people[not a peeping tom] but how they interact with each other). then the dad did not like something the girl in rags did/said and gave her a very heavy slap. she cried. i asked companion 'does that look like something a father would do?'. point being that she was most likely sold off by her parents because they were in debt or something of that kind. sad to say but there are millions like her out there in the world. not to mention all the sex slave out there not only in india or third "world" countries.

the larger issue is that these people need education, skills, job training and yes jobs. this is a terrible cycle that will never end. there is to much profit to be made and the human being is just a greedy animal that wants more and more and more. i am not rich but by the standards of the people in this report i would be considered rich. i really need to pinch my pennies as well.

It is sad to know that there is such a digital divide in India. We only get to meet the educated and fortunate ones here. However, there are so many poor, hard working people living there working so hard to make a living. The working condition for these people is almost unbelievable. Government in India does not seem to enforce laws.

Why such commotion involving religions in slavery? It has been an ancient institutions. Perhasps ha phase of evolution of collective human history where greed and exploitation of weak by the poerful prevailed. Its mention in is in oldest of all Faiths Epics of Hinduism bearing the titles of "Daas" and "Daasi"(for frmale slave). Hindu gods were merry making with the assortment of "Dassis" as their divine previlage. Judo-Christin old and nre testaments have not dondemned the Practice. Islam in 700AD has accepted as natural division of human race. In 1400 BC ratio of Freemen ro Slave was 30:70. In 700BC to 1000AD it was 50:50. Because nit evry one can be Master. There had to be slaves to completr thr human Society and achieve Progress. To day we have under ground slabe shops in EU and US often raided by Police. INDIA'S

"Jack Hinton of Kenney, Ill., was sentenced to jail indefinitely after falling behind on a court order that he pay $150 a month on a debt of $6,440. Hinton, a self-employed roofing contractor, said he had broken his neck and back in a fall, but the judge noted that Hinton used $1,000 for other bills rather than his court-ordered payments. He was ordered to the county jail until he could come up with $300.

After three hours in a holding cell, his wife got him released by borrowing on a credit card. "I couldn't pay, and I was stuck in jail until I did," Hinton said. "How is that any different from debtors prison?"" Or for that matter any different from "bonded labor".

Exodus 5:4-18 But the king of Egypt said, “Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor? Get back to your work!” Then Pharaoh said, “Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working.”

That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers and overseers in charge of the people: “You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks; let them go and gather their own straw. But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don’t reduce the quota. They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’ Make the work harder for the people so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies.”

Then the slave drivers and the overseers went out and said to the people, “This is what Pharaoh says: ‘I will not give you any more straw. Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced at all.’” So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for straw. The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, “Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw.” And Pharaoh’s slave drivers beat the Israelite overseers they had appointed, demanding, “Why haven’t you met your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?”

Then the Israelite overseers went and appealed to Pharaoh: “Why have you treated your servants this way? Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told, ‘Make bricks!’ Your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people.”

Pharaoh said, “Lazy, that’s what you are—lazy! That is why you keep saying, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.’ Now get to work. You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks.”

So it is up to the Indian government to provide free education even at remote places around India so kids finish school and have a better future.

I know of the fact that these days, more and more people are attracted to cameras and the subject of pictures. However, really being a photographer, you need to first commit so much time period deciding the model of digicam to buy plus moving store to store just so you may buy the lowest priced camera of the trademark you have decided to select. But it isn't going to end now there. You also have to take into consideration whether you should purchase a digital dslr camera extended warranty. Thanks a lot for the good recommendations I received from your website.
