Actress Demi Moore partners with CNN Freedom Project for a compelling documentary.

A passionate advocate for victims of human trafficking herself, Moore travels to Nepal to meet 2010 CNN Hero of the Year Anuradha Koirala and some of the thousands of women and girls Koirala’s organization has rescued from forced prostitution. How were they taken and where were they sent?

Hear the emotional, first-hand experiences of these young survivors. And follow along with Moore as she searches for answers in the fight to end this form of modern-day slavery.

Along the way she hears horror stories from former sex slaves, plays games with their children, and joins one woman making the daunting trip home.

The group also has a hospice for women with HIV-AIDS, a learning center for women hoping to make a new life and a band of border guards trying to stop women being smuggled in the first place.

Are you people seriously arguing about something irrelevant to this specific blog. This blog is to comment on the documentary and modern day slavery. Not for you to be ignorant racists to each other.
People like you are the reason we will never have peace. You really need to get your perspective on what's important in life checked. These are some harsh words yet you throw them around not worrying about the impact they have on others. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs just respect each others.

I am from Mexico. Last year we sent a ship with humanitarian aid to Haiti after the earthquake. This was shortly before the Swine flu outbreak (scare I should say instead) that started in Mexico. Haiti rejected the cargo from Mexico out of fear that the merchandise could carry the disease. We are already used to this kind of ungrateful attitude. Just do good and don't expect any reward or recognition. If it comes, it's fine. If it does not, it is Okay also.

"Actors, thriving on publicity, have historically claimed for themselves the right to champion 'causes,' the term of art being 'Their' disease. This hucksterism may, in fact, have done somebody good, and more probably, did harm to nothing save the actor's understanding of his place in the world...these happy dupes reward themselves for feeling superior to their own country..." why else than a career now in the rear view mirror and a boy toy husband's own career taking off. We at least have from her a film on stripping.

how come these stories don't show 2 clear realities – 1) Nepali political protection of the traffickers and even at time political parties benefiting financially from such trafficking, and 2) most of the trafficking is happening to India where such slavery exists, what is Indian authorities doing about it? CNN should throw its weight behind these core causes.

In reality, this is world-wide problem. Even in places like New York. So many young women and underage children (runaways) in this country wind up in big cities and are sold into prostitution and drugs.

It is only a matter of degrees. It may be more in India, than in Nepal or New York City.

      But it is problem nevertheless.

i agree this is a worldwide problem in various degrees, it is more a matter of stopping the men (im sure women at times too) who are buying these services. its the mentality of people that needs to be stopped and changed so there is no market to exploit the women. i think its called having a moral standard, does anyone remember what that is and has this world ever had one? victimizing women is animalistic, we are human beings we are supposed to know better. lots of prayers for the world is needed.

The USA Constitution and Declaration of Independence stand for freedom; it might be a good idea to remove that from your screen name, because you have nothing to do with the USA. And no, slavery does not make things cheaper; it makes Americans lose jobs, so that they cannot afford to buy anything, but we still have to pay our high prices for food, rent, mortgage, phone and internet fees, healthcare, college, etc. etc. etc.

As BBC news reported a few years ago, there is a thriving sex slave industry that generates over 20 billion us dollars per year. The situation in Nepal is a tiny slice of that. Thanks CNN for reporting on the problem in Nepal – i look forward to seeing this program. Please do a major report on the 20+ billion a year sex slave industry that is thriving in the western world, and largely ignored by the big politicians... who cave in to pressure from some billionaires who are involved in illegal and immoral activities – like the sex slave industry.

Nepal needs freedom of conscience(religious freedom) and literacy. Literacy rate – 48%

    June 19, 2011 at 9:34 pm | Reply
    • Elizabeth

Literacy is tricky in Nepal. The "Hilary Schools" (set up by the first British climber of Mt. Everest) was meant to give education to all, but these schools have been used less for education than for indoctrination. Nepal has different factions: Hindu, Moslem, Tibetan Buddhist. Some have a traditional desire for literacy. Some memorize without understanding how to actually read. Across the world, education needs to be consistent. When I hear about schools in the U.S. that cut back hours, take away courses, do not have the support of the parents or communities, or raise the cost of higher education and get rid of requirements such as history, I think of those countries that fell into illiteracy, and how those countries have fallen apart. We should take a cautionary lesson from this.

I agree that education is something that can help to curb sex trafficking. However, education is not only the solution. Literacy rate in the Philippines is over 90%, but the sex trafficking in the Philippines is worse than Nepal. I guess socio-economic problems in the society are also associated with sex trafficking.

You know I love how willing Demi Moore and Ashton Kutchner are to lend their celebrity to address the international issue of human trafficking. But I'd really like to see them use their "powers" to help domestically. Everyone wants to help the kids you see in the poster, looking sad from some poor country. But no one wants to give a damn about the girls, and boys, in our own country who are sexually exploited as well. There are more domestic victims of human trafficking domestically in the US than there are international victims in the US but the majority of resources are devoted to the minority of victims. The issue shouldn't be focused on domestic versus international but treated as one in the same. Give damn about kids in our own communities, cities, and towns.

      You said it yourself.

It is one and the same, saving kid here is the same as saving one some other place. But education and dollars, etc go much farther in developing countries than say in Ohio or NYC.

Some things like food & water shortage, sex trade, drugs, child abuse, medical help, natural calamities have no borders. Helping any way, helps, be it in NYC or the Sudan.

It's not how far the dollars go in the U.S. It's the sense: do we want to make college only affordable by the rich? Do we want to get rid of curriculum such as history in colleges, so that students do not know about such things as slavery anywhere? Dollars and sense. And NOT voting for people that take away all our resources to line the pockets of the very rich. I'm in Ohio, and teachers cannot collectively bargain; our parks now can be drilled for oil; waste water from Pennsylvania is pumped into our ground water: all to keep the top percent of people in Ohio from paying taxes. Our state will be a moonscape before people wise up; but do people want to see the real consequences of these policies? It is much easier to see an example in a foreign country, and ignore what we are doing to ourselves at home.

  16. Worked in Asia

We should put public pressure on the companies in Asia whose business customs include freely handing out gifts of sexual services to their business guests. Of course, the receiving party's employers deserve public scrutiny as well, especially since a very large number of them are American and European companies.

Many of the sexual providers involved are young girls (and boys) and because many of these Asian companies are doing so well financially, the sex traffickers they depend on can expect a very steady, and growing, source of demand.

There is plenty of human trafficking going on right here in the U.S., yet ironically, no one gives a hoot because for some reason going to Nepal to stop human trafficking is more politically correct. Hundreds of thousands of people from Mexico, Nicaragua, Guatamala and other countries are lured to criminal smuggling rings who steel their money, kidnap them then hold them hostage in the US until their families pay ransom demands. When demands are not met, girls are raped, fingers are cut off and sometimes these folks are killed or forced into slave labor. The human smuggling rings are in cahoots with many farms, factories, etc. to provide cheap labor in poor working conditions. Being a nation who looks the other way to the atrociities associated with illegal immigration will go down in history as a sin as big as slavery. Shame on people like Demi Moore for going half way around the world all the while ignoring what's goin on her own back yard (literally).

So, don't vote for people who look the other way. Seriously, the power of the vote has been ignored.
Elderly people, whose birth certificates do not have their parents' names on them, if they move, and don't have a driver's license, might find it very difficult to register to vote. A whole city: Washington D.C., does not have any representation in Congress. These are treated as non-citizens. Those in Indiana who cut off the ability of poor women to get healthcare because they were getting healthcare from "Planned Parenthood" (which does a lot more than abortions), are the kind of people that import slaves to work in hotels and elsewhere. Our border guards are told to look the other way when a big business brings in its slaves. People have to stand up to these rich slave owners, not let them into your churches, your clubs, and especially do not vote for them for any office, local, county, state, or national. And then demand that the justice department stop these practices.

It is nice to note that worldwide famous American celebrities like Demi Moore enthusiastically engage in efforts to help human trafficked victims. We should give her our big hands. On the other hand, such modern ills may not be eradicated but can be largely wiped off by helping theunder-previlleged class in every society, by handing down harsh punishment on criminals without any mercy speedily.

I am happy that this is out in the open but we should not wait until a celebrity does something for us to care about these serious situations. Human trafficking has been going on for years n it doesn't matter if it's here at home or over seas pain n sadness is the same wherever you are. As for the ignorance of people leaving stupid comments are people that have nothing good in their lives so they start dumping their failures on others. GROW UP!

The real problem is sexual addictions of all types! Some people get hot and bothered by animals, some by children, some even by infants! SICK, SICK SICK! People need to learn respect for all people's bodies including their own! A person has a God given right to be a virgin until she or he dies. People talk about having control of their bodies, but the first control is the absolute, God given right to say no to sex for any and all reasons.

I disagree with the person who said that religion should be kept unmentioned when such questions as the present one are discussed. The more he or she studies History, the more one sees the filthy role played time and again by those who view Daughters of Eve as responsible for all the bad things in the world and treat them accordingly... feeling self-righteous about it. Whenever you see or read ab out a woman stoned while her "sinning" partner goes free, the more you see fathers or uncles killing their precious girls in the name of family "honor," the more you can see products of the myth of original sin: blaming some for the crimes of others, making every non -male human being a target of scorn, exploitation, discrimination and all too often, death.

After reading so many of CNN's articles on modern day slavery throughout the world, I did my own research and found some outstanding organizations that are working to stop human trafficking. I just joined IJM (International Justice Mission), but there are other organizations: Free the Slaves, Not for Sale, Polaris Project, the Covenant Homes ( in the US) etc. If we all help in any way that we can, we can help these victims of human trafficking, and put out of business the monsters that are forcing these girls and boys into prostitution and slavery.

    The heart of the market
In these movement patterns, a significant destination is Europe, which possibly has the highest prostitutes-to-populations ratio – alongwith the USA.
Commercial Sex – bigger than movies and music
BBC reports that “in Britain, it is estimated that some £770m ($1.2bn) is spent on prostitution every year, more than on cinemas or many other forms of entertainment.” In Switzerland, prostitution “generates an annual turnover of SFr3.2 billion ($2.65 billion).”

Strangely, there are no cross-country, comparative reports on marriage and prostitution. The modern West, which seeks to measure every aspect of life (they call it econometrics) especially if it involves the Third World, has done no such study on prostitution and marriage.

Another report points out how “the influx of peace-keepers and other international personnel may lead to increased trafficking of women and girls for prostitution”.

In some parts of EU, prostitution is recognized as another profession with a State taxation policy in place. For instance, “5%-10% of the estimated 20,000 prostitutes in the Netherlands pay taxes.” Belgium is considering “estimated 50 million euros a year. It represents an attractive option for a country currently struggling to balance its budget deficit”. At “€14 billion-a-year prostitution industry”, Germany is the biggest market by value, for prostitution.

Easier said than done, dai ... sharing almost all the border with India makes it really complicated to implement VISA system. Moreover, Indians are also trafficked to Nepal. It goes both ways. And we rely more on India for survival than our own country. VISA system will endorse more taxation and service charges ... more human resources at entry check points ... simply put, we are too poor than Indians to afford border security and VISA system.

The Houston Chronicle reports that my hometown is one of the hubs of human trafficking for the United States. Being a port city, and thanks to our previous mayor, a "Sanctuary City", human traffickers flourish and their trade is lucrative; VERY lucrative. This scourge has to be fought on ALL fronts; in this country, and its countries of origin. Human beings are going to be one of the highest-price commodities in the times to come. The enslavement of people has been with us since time immemorial but we can help stop it. We MUST stop it.

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher attended the opening of my photographic exhibition and book on modern day slavery at the 2010 Freedom Awards in Redondo Beach, California. in Nepal more than 12,000 ppl get trafficked every year... and this organisation "Maiti Nepal" has been doing great work since its establishment over a decade ago. Hats off to Maiti Nepal. I had the opportunity to go to the main office in Kathmandu and from the look of it, they are doing wonderful job. The government should learn from this organisastion..

Please CNN, the trafficking stories are all so sad.
But , obviously, you chose Nepal ,because that useless peice of S*#T of a former actress
Demi Moore has no acting to do ,so she decides she needs something to do with her time. She NOW she wants to be a, humanitaion.(remember Angelina who is truely An actress and humanitarian)
Making a documentary is a way of exposure which DEMMMMI needs (badly) now that hubby is working and she obviously is not. CNN I love your journalism but be more selective. Human trafficking is a much larger problem in Asia

Now now, show some respect mister. Our country which has relied on foreign aid to survive ever since it was f*&ked by illiterate politicians have no rights to complain if helping hands are willing to sacrifice their time and resources on us. Demi wanted to help, so she came forward. Brangelina couple wanted to help, so did they. Fame is like wielding two edged sword. It cuts both ways. If they don't help, they are criticised for being selfish ... and now if they want to, we blame them for wanting more fame ?

Respect isn't something you can borrow....nor is it something you should "have" to earn. Respect should just be out of human decency something that ALL people should natural do. Racial comments are true not welcome here and should be voided. Its pieces of crap like them that keep this world from evolving into a better place. The U.S does try to crack down on human trafficking as there are articles on CNN speaking for farmers who traffick illegals for their work pretending the will become neutralized here in the U.S. Educate yourself a bit better before posting something that isn't entirely true. One step to making things better anywhere about anything is better than no step at all.

Why do "superstars" always have to rush in and put their name stamp and tag onto the works that others have done? Before this is over Demi Moore will the the face of this womans hard work..
Why couldn't she have just stayed in the background as a producer of this show? But no, she has to be on camera too... making some kind of "humanitarian" name for herself.

i don't see that Demi Moore is trying to make a "humanitarian" name for herself. i watched the entire special and in all humility she admitted to Anouradha Koirala that what she has done to stop human trafficking is so small. we just have to accept the truth and reality that we need people like Demi for us to be aware just like Princess Diana on HIV/AIDS and Mother Teresa on Poverty/Dying & Destitute. But I am sure that Demi Moore is really involve & sincere and not just making a name for herself. Also, I want to thank her for making the whole world aware of human trafficking & poverty.

Being a Nepalese, we don't care who is on the spotlight. As long as the welfare is done and people are saved, we could even worship her as a God. It's a win win situation. She gets famous, earns reputation. Brings in more charity and saves more people. 🙂

      Dear Jennifer Biernat,

Sad to hear that someone was lost in the Himalayas. It is extremely hard to find a lost person in those areas where an accident could only mean death. If she is gone missing for more than a year in that high altitude, there are extremely rare chances of finding her. My guess is, if she came across Nepalese Army barracks in remote places alone, or Maoists barracks, the chances are that she was probably raped and killed. I pray to God that I am wrong and wish that she'd be found.

Money is generated. So is TAX. Avoid Tax by charity. Charity goes to Anuradha. She helps save girls. The show is success. Everyone is happy.

Once again, we see a "Hollywood Harlot" who made her millions and got her fame, by showing off her naked body.
She is part of the sex slave problem. She puts her nasty self out there for the world to see and lust after.....then the men who are driven by lust seek out sex anywhere they can get it....thus, she helps fuel the sex slave problem. Now she wants to look like some kind of do-gooder by joining the fight against the sex slave industry. PLEASE! Most likely she is getting an education about all of this so she can make a movie about it, show off her naked body again, and fuel more of the sex slavery problem. She's using these poor women – mark my words. Before you know it, she'll have a movie out about it.

Obama is GUILTY of failing to address the ongoing SLAVERY problem in our country and globally. Obama has made it worse by talking like a typical ignorant black person incapable of comprehending that SLAVERY is bad when it happens to white people and women too. And children. We liberals need to not use the phrase "modern day slavery" because it waters down the issue. Slavery is slavery. FUCK OBAMA for going to Africa and saying Thank God Slavery is over. Factually untrue and VERY DAMAGING to the cause of ending slavery. Note: from the day Obama was inaugurated up until this moment more people have been brutally victimized by slavery than in the totality of those in the USA African phase. Think about that. Our WITLESS lazy affirmative action "president" apparently needs to be educated FIRST before the rest of the nations.

Demi Moore? Really? She was inarticulate and she looked drugged out like an old Angelina Jolie – the skelton/botox look was so distracting! It's like a car crash – you can't stop looking at the bones and face and wondering if it's crack or heroin stashed in that purse she holds so close to her. Sorry – the story is compelling but with the wrong messenger. This is a 50 year old woman who tweets bikini clad pictures of herself to the world – not saying much for respect for women.

Just be thankful or appreciate what Demi Moore is doing even if she has different motives. There are hardly any people who speak for women's rights in Nepal. People in Nepal hardly help those girls or women diagnosed with aids and treat them worse than animal. So just be thankful and don't criticize them. Yapping or criticizing through your computer and sitting on a chair is easy. When times come you wont even help those women at all.

I don't get why anyone would treat a person like a toy that they can rip, get dirty, and break. All of us are equals, and I think everyone should treat each person like an equal.
I don't think that lying or mistreating people will get you anywhere. In the end it will just hurt you and the people you love.
So what I want to know is how a twelve year old girl could help out?

It's odd how here in the US when a celebrity lends his or her name to a cause, and travels to a place most of us would never dare set foot in, much less for a humanitarian reason, suddenly people sit down and start typing on their laptops from the comfort and safety of their own homes, to completely blast them for it with every negative bit of so-called 'news' they've ever read in a tabloid or seen on a tv celeb gossip show.

There are certainly lots of particulars like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to convey up. I offer the thoughts above as common inspiration but clearly there are questions just like the one you deliver up the place a very powerful thing will likely be working in sincere good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around issues like that, but I'm sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game. Today, I went to the beachfront with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic but I had to tell someone!

I mean, what you say is important and all. But imagine if you added some great photos or video clips to give your posts more, "pop"!
Your content is excellent but with images and video
clips, this site could undeniably be one of the very best

One more thing. It's my opinion that there are lots of travel insurance web-sites of trustworthy companies than enable you to enter holiday details and get you the quotations. You can also purchase the particular international holiday insurance policy on the net by using your credit card. Everything you need to do will be to enter your travel details and you can see the plans side-by-side. Simply find the system that suits your budget and needs and use your credit card to buy that. Travel insurance online is a good way to check for a dependable company with regard to international holiday insurance. Thanks for revealing your ideas.

When you think of the best massage chair for sale, you may think of only the type of chair that is going to massage your legs. That's not the best massage chair for sale, however. A good massage chair should give you an overall comfort experience. If it doesn't feel right, it doesn't work, or it makes your body feel sore, it's not the best chair for sale.

Local Law 196 is a NYC DOB law that requires workers and supervisors at most NYC construction sites to obtain a SST card by completing specific courses through a NYC DOB approved training provider. Able Safety offers multiple packages to complete this training at great low prices. All our SST classes can be completed entirely online from any device (phone, tablet, pc/mac). The NYC DOB’s SST compliance deadline was originally set for September 1st 2020. The deadline has since been extended to March 1st 2021. By this date you will need the following to be allowed to work on most construction sites in NYC.

It is indeed my belief that mesothelioma can be the most deadly cancer. It's got unusual properties. The more I really look at it the greater I am persuaded it does not act like a real solid human cancer. If mesothelioma is often a rogue viral infection, in that case there is the chance of developing a vaccine as well as offering vaccination to asbestos exposed people who are vulnerable to high risk associated with developing upcoming asbestos linked malignancies. Thanks for discussing your ideas about this important ailment.
