One dress raising awareness of slavery

Last year, Amy Seiffert learned that her hometown of Toledo, Ohio, ranked 4th in the United States in the number of arrests, investigations and rescues of underage victims of sex trafficking. So Seiffert decided to do something about it.

She pledged to wear the same dress for six months and donate the money she would have otherwise spent on clothes, and raise money and awareness for The Daughter Project, a local organization building a shelter for girls rescued from sex trafficking.

She blogged about it, she spoke out about it, and before long, others were inspired to follow in her footsteps.

Do what we did. Wear the same dress. It seems simple but really raises awareness and money. The girls in college gave the money we raised to the daughter project. You can do the same. If you want more information on the daughter project visit http://www.thedaughterproject.org/

Group with other folks. Take video of street hookers and with law enforcement, make citizen arrest on them. Of course, know the law. These hookers and their pimps will go to other areas. Those areas they will move to should do the same things and they be run out of business ! With a camera, get pictures of 'Johns' also and publish them on FaceBook !
Do what Chris Hansen on Dateline NBC To Catch a Predator do ! Hey you might catch a serial killer !

Leave the girls alone. The girls provide a service even Tiger Woods liked and he was married. Go after the pimps and the Johns.

      • Grace

Got to agree with Ramrod on this one, why persecute the women? They are the ones that we are suppose to be trying to help. And persecuting them isn't going to do any good.
You need to go after the pimps and handlers they are the ones most of the time that are keeping these women locked in this vicious cycle.
Good idea go after the victims, how lame is that?

@Ramrod The girls aren't providing anything if they're slaves, it's being stolen from them. The Johns are raping them if they have no choice.

Easy. Find a small child anywhere from 5-10 yrs old, kidnap her and sell her to a middle aged man or woman. Preferably one in the political field but clergymen will work just as well.

They didn't say they did not wash them. Before this was a throw away society..people had work cloths, play cloths, sunday church cloths or your good cloths, you wash or rinsed out your cloths (gentle or personal) that evening for use the next day because you had but one or two. Friends that would abandon you while working on such a humane cause, I'd say see ya later....I can do better, elsewhere!

My home-state of Ohio has long been known for its female sex slaves transported in 'herds' in trucks through the U.S. Interstate system I-71/70 and I-77/70 splits. Thank heaven our Ohio State Patrol officers are supportively vigilant in their actions to stop and apprehend heinous perpetrators.

This idea is very weird. Just the thought that you need to buy new dresses so often points to a very bizarre attachment to consumerism at its worst. Is she saying she needs to replace her dresses in less than six months? They can't even go out of fashion that fast. A good quality piece of clothing should last for years if properly cared for. What the heck is this woman and her followers doing to their clothes ?? How much are you spending on clithes that NOT buying a new dress would amke any significant impact on charitable donations? This is why people are going bankrupt and in foreclosure. They CANNOT stop buying and spending. This is a mental disorder. She needs to get help. Please enlighten me. I don't get it.

I think the point behind it is two-fold. (1) To raise awareness. Obviously those people who see her multiple times over the course of the 6-months will notice that she is wearing the same outfit. That sparks a conversation where she can tell them about the project. The idea is that they will, in turn, tell some of their friends/family/coworkers about the charity and hopefully some of them will donate. Which brings me to the second point. (2) To raise money. I don't think this woman is saying that she goes out and buys a new outfit everyday. But, over the course of 6 months, the average person will spend SOME money on clothes – whether it is for a special occasion or to replace worn-out clothes. It is relatively easy to figure out how much you spent in a prior 6-month period on clothes, and then just donate that same amount to the charity.

I can see how this would raise awareness, and focus the person on the issue. In terms of saving money, unless the person usually constantly buys clothes, I'm not sure how it would do that. As others point out, the dress will ultimately need to be replaced. In the meantime, the dress will have to be washed every couple of days, which uses fuel and water. Of course, that expense might be justified by the increased awareness.

@iamthefredman. If you wear the same dress every single day for 6 months, yes, it will need to be replaced. She's not just refraining from purchasing new clothing for six months, she is wearing the same thing. Of course if you had actually taken the time to read the article and let it sink in you would know that. I'm sure that you only have 3 outfits(a formal, "grungy" for yardwork, housework, etc, and a work outfit) and only eat 1200-1500 calories a day, do not drive a vehicle, turn off every light, take 5 minute showers, etc, THEN you can say how others spend their money. I do not know a single perfect person in the world that does every one of those things. Everyone spends. If no one spent, the economy would be worse off than it already is, as nobody would have jobs in retail, and manufacturing. Obviously you don't get it, cause you didn't read the article completely.

You can slam @iamthefredman all you like, but I was confused, too (and I DID read this very brief article). Perhaps this is a matter of where a person lives. I could show up in the same outfit for a considerable while before anybody would see it as odd enough to comment on. I imagine that if I lived in the world of "Sex & the City" there might be some comments from my friends at tea, but not here in small town Canada. Wearing a button would bring faster attention.
Also, nothing I spend on clothes in any six month period would be worth a CNN article. I do shop, just not so very much, and not for clothes, shoes, handbags or whatnot.
That said, I support any plan to change this dreadful situation. If it works in your circles, do it. If you live a different lifestyle, you should try something else.

I am a senior in college in Columbus, Ohio and a group of about 12 girls just finished wearing the same dress for 10 weeks. It was amazing! Students were able to see us in our classes, in our dorms, all over campus. And it was very effective. We were able to share about the campaign to raise awareness and even some men got involved by wearing the same shirt or colors every week. We worked with an organization called DOMA (which means 'home'). It is a safe house in Columbus for victims of trafficking. We also had a huge event at the end of the quarter called "Sex Speaks." Hundreds of people attended. A judge who handles cases in sex trafficking to help free women spoke as well as a woman who shared her testimony of what it was like when she was involved in trafficking. People left changed. The campaign was extremely eye-opening and something we will never forget. We were inspired by Amy because she decided to take a stand against human sex trafficking in such a unique way. We not only raised money but raised awareness that trafficking occurs right here in Columbus and it's an issue we need to address.

How much does a woman spend on clothes in 6 months? I think the amount donated was $0.00 and she probably got a lot of dollar donations.

Honestly, there are so many anal people here! Apparently she spends some money or she would not have bothered using this as a means to gather money to donate. Just because you wear things until they fall off your body does not mean everyone does. I am by no means considered a 'clothes horse', nor do I buy designer anything, but I do spend several hundred dollars in any 6 month period on a new shirt or pair of pants here or there. It's a great idea so why can't we just applaud her idea and expand on it instead of ridiculing it?

THAT is one contributing reason why this country is in the toilet, financially. The cause is just, but the support of all the materialistic ladies just highlights the SECOND principle at work here...the one of "HOW AMERICA ABANDONED FUNDAMENTAL LAWS OF FINALCIAL LOGIC."

Slave trading is some awful stuff. Yes, I saw the movie "Taken". But like illicit drugs, it is almost impossible to stamp out as long as there is a demand for it. And unfortunately there are certain scum out there who demand it.

With that being said, not too clear on how wearing the same dress for a while helps the issue. Does she also not shower or use deoderant? Is the idea to stink as much as possible to raise awareness? Admittedly I did not read the article. I am a busy person.

It's very sad that it takes something as awful as human sex trafficking and slavery to get women to realize what men have been complaining about since the beginning of time. They waste so much money on vanity it leaves little time for a man to do anything but work to support her bad habit. While you're at it how about one pair of shoes and give the money back to your husband so he can enjoy life too!

a large hat shaped like a block of cheese would be just as effective as a conversation-starter and have a smaller carbon footprint, assuming the dress was washed frequently with the usual soap, electricity use and gallons of water.

This is a situation that is getting worse and worse.
Recently during, before and after the Super Bowl agents at airports, bus terminals, cab driver's, train staff all underwent special training to help them spot suspicious activity that could be related to sex trafficking. Apparently around the time of the Super Bowl wherever it's held this heinous crime increases in that area.

I would also like to direct everyone to a new designer by the name of Katie, her company Elegantees.com works towards the prevention and education about sex trafficking. Please visit her website, check out her designs they are beautiful and extremely decently priced. Profits go towards an organization that works directly with those who are victims of this crime. Please check it out, it's another way to help.

Raising awareness about an issue like this is not nothing. Sure, wearing the same dress for six months isn't exactly a sacrifice, especially if you wear different stuff with it to add variety, but even this simple thing is more than most people are doing. She's raising awareness. There is no way to know what the total effect of that will be. Yes, some of the comments here are indeed cynical, including yours.

She did more than you did. Takes a real loser to criticize someone who tries to draw attention to a serious issue rather tha going about their life only caring about themselves - you know, like you. Don't worry, she isn't trying to get rid of the hookers so you'll still be able to go under the bridge and find one willing to "service" you.

#1: CNN where's the data on this? I don't believe it (namely the trafficking stats on Toledo Ohio in the US)

If you really read and listened to the article, you would have known that she did this to RAISE AWARENESS. Simply put for you and you alone, she did not know sex trafficking was such a problem and when she realized it (her brain, unlike yours, actually can put 2 and 2 together) she did something to make others aware. When people are aware, they look out for suspicious occurrences and can report them to police. That was not so hard, was it?

I started setmaeeting.com to help wtih this problem. I was very frustrated by people who wanted to wait until everyone gave thier availability before they responded with thier times to meet. This made scheduling a meeting in a reasonable time frame difficult. setmaeeting.com or SAM helps fix this problem by sending out automated reminders to the invitees until tehy respond. It also allows the invitees to see the available times for people who ahve already responded.

The problem I have of the US being labeled as the "largest" or major user of sex slaves is that supposedly our government is spending billions and listen to phone calls to Auntie Em and uses the Patriot Act to bypass our rights. If the government is so great at finding information, do you really think the US is a major player in the world slave trade? I don't.

"our government is spending billions and listen to phone calls to Auntie Em "

This is simply not true. This notion that the government is listening to everyone or reading all our e-mail is just silly. They only actively use those powers when they have reason to believe someone is a person of interest. So unless your Auntie Em has done something to attract their attention no one is paying any attention to her.

We need more people like Amy. Americans tend to be poorly informed about the issues facing us, but when Amy became aware of a problem, instead of making some cynical comments about it or just feeling bad about it for 15 minutes and moving on because it didn't affect her directly, she accepted an unpleasant reality, chose to learn more about it, and decided she would try to do something to help combat the problem.

It would have been easy for her, and attractive woman with a good life to stay in her comfort zone and avoid the unpleasantness that invariably accompanies learning about something as ugly as this issue is. It's also cool that she was able to recognize the extent to she was lucky to have the advantages she had. Very cool.

On the lighter side, how many clothes does one person really need? I buy clothes may be once a year...some new jeans, shirts, shoes. Great, her one dress campaign will raise for sex slaves for six months but when she returns to buying clothes, what, every day, she will be a part of the child slavery going on India to make her clothes.

I have a four-step precoss1) Set up a view that makes anything where I'm just on the CC list automatically italic, and anything where I am the only recipient automatically larger font.2) If I open an email, right then and there I either (a) respond, (b) delete, (c) flag or mark unread this way I never lose' emails3) About twice per day view Unread messages and precoss4) About thrice per day view Flagged messages and precossAbout once a month I sort through my inbox, getting from the 1000s of emails down to a couple of hundred.Best of luck!-Jeremy

There is a lot of cynicism on here. A woman saw an issue that needed awareness, thought of a way to do it, albeit a bit different than other awareness campaigns, but at least she did something about something. All of you on here bashing her and others who have done something, have any of you done anything?
True, it may have lasted only 6mos and maybe she went back to her life as before, but she rose awareness and someone that learned from her will keep the cycle going, maybe in the same way, maybe in a different way, it's called the ripple effect.

Now about you men on here complaining in generalities about how much money women spend on clothing, or as one poster stated being 'vain', and complaining about her and other women consumerism, tell me, how many of you have a TV that is flat screen? How about over say 26 ins? And how many channels do you get with that fancy remote you won't give up? And what about the tools in your garage? Or for others the toys in their office? How many of you play games and watch movies on that really awesome phone?

What I'm trying to point out is that men and women spend money on different things. Most Americans are caught up in consumerism, which is a catch 22, if we don't spend the economy suffers, but if we spend too much then the economy suffers.
So leave the woman alone at least she did something other than complain. And no one has the right to tell someone else how to spend their hard earned money.

Remember: If you're not a part of the solution, you're part of the problem. And any small amount can make a difference. And all of us no matter what our situation we can help others. This msg thread is so full of negativity all over a person trying to bring awareness to an ugly, heinous, crime that happens all too often right here in the US, and maybe that's why there's so much anger on here, the truth and ugly truth has hit all of you square in the face and you can't handle it, so you deflect. Well shame on those of you who have put this woman down. Do some research and open your eyes about this issue. Someone stated to get started find a child between the ages of 5 and 10, think again, it's toddlers and infants also. And rich American men go on vacations, that are specifically geared for going to foreign countries, usually those in the Asian areas, for the sole purpose of having sex with children. This is a very sick and secret society that exists and they abuse these children in countries where they know that the chance of getting caught is almost non-existent.

if in fact cnn was really interested in stopping the slavery going on in the world they would strip their clothes off on their next update and show their viewers that they are supporing slavery and empressment of the young by purchasing the clothing that they are wearing. There is slavery and impressment going on in this country and it can be stopped but the politicians in this country are worried about getting reelected not living by american standards. We need to force american companies to bring manufacturing back into this country. Raise importing taxes on products being brought into this country by foreign manufacturers and american companies who outsource their manufacturing to countries that use slave labor and child labor. So cnn stop spinning stories that can be fixed simply by you requiring your employees to wear clothing and use products that are manufactured in the united states. The usa is not perfect but their is a chance of stopping slavery and child abuse in this country, all we have to do is force our elected officials to their jobs and stop worring about their reelections.

The shot when you're walking down the street is in Sylvania, not Toledo. Also, Toledo is one of Ohio's largest cities, I know that doesn't mean much in the scope of cities like New York or LA, but we're bigger than Detroit now a days. Not exactly "small-town America". We have a major University, that had one of the first distance learning programs in the country; We're the Home of Jeep, Owens Corning and Libby glass; We also have the most famous Minor League Baseball team, The Mudhens. Don't write us off as "small town" just b/c we're not as big as NY, or b/c we're in "fly-over space"!

Also, being from Toledo, I'm always amazed that people are shocked by this fact about our area (not just our city). We have 2 major interstates (I-75 & I-80) that intersect here and we're very close to Canada. Everyplace in the city has easy access to the highways; an abductor could vanish with their victim so quickly. I guess it's just the coping mentality of "that can't happen to me/here" that people develop to make themselves feel safe.
