Shelter from horrors of slavery

By Jenifer Fenton, CNN Abu Dhabi

United Arab Emirates (CNN) - From the outside it looks no different from the luxury villas that dot this affluent emirate. Inside the modern building, though, are secrets: stories of depravity and horror that sound out of place in the 21st Century.

The Ewa'a shelter is an oasis for women and girls whose lives have been filled with pain and tears.

We meet a 15-year-old girl, who will not tell us directly who she is or about what she has experienced. The other six victims we are introduced to are older, but in the past some of the victims who've passed through the shelter have been as young as 11 or 12 years old. All of them, shelter officials say, have been trafficked and sexually abused. The officials recount how these women have been raped, locked up or forced into prostitution.

One woman tells us she came to the UAE because she was promised a job at a supermarket. When she arrived she was forced into what she says was "not good business." She will not elaborate. Another, we are told by social workers, was locked up by her captors for a year.

Most of these women came to the UAE in search of a job. "The traffickers, what they do, is bring them with a good salary, with a visa basically. It is all a lie," says Madawi al-Saud, Ewa'a's media coordinator.

The shelter, whose location in Abu Dhabi is a secret, opened in 2009. That year (for which the most recent statistics are available), 38 women and children sought refuge.

Ewa'a is a non-governmental organization that receives funding from groups including charities set up the UAE royal family. It also runs two other shelters in Sharjah and Ras al-Khaimah. Victims are usually referred by the police, embassies, hospitals or religious institutions. In addition to providing shelter and protection to the victims, the women receive medical and psychological care. Computer and language classes are offered. And legal assistance is also provided.

Most women spend two to six months at the shelter. When appropriate, the women are repatriated, according to the administrators. "Some of the victims, their parents either sold them or they just don't want to go back home for certain reasons," says al-Saud.

If a victim does not want to return to her home country, she is referred to UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency, which helps find another country where she can be resettled. The UAE does not grant refugee status.

The shelter says by helping victims at every stage of the police investigation, as well as in the courts, it helped convict 28 traffickers in 2009. But that, it says, is just one step in the fight against trafficking.

"My target, my aim in the future (is) to close all these shelters. That means my country (is) free from human trafficking," says Sarah Shuhail, the executive director of Ewa'a Shelters.

"Human Trafficking, according to UAE Federal Law 51 of 2006, is the recruiting, transporting, transferring, harboring or receiving persons by means of threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, abduction, fraud, deception, abuse of power or of position, taking advantage of the vulnerability of the person or the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person for the purpose of exploitation. Exploitation includes all forms of sexual exploitation, forced labour, enslavement, quasi-slavery practices, or detachment of organs."

Good Lord, can CNN please hire an editor to spell/grammar check these articles? Preferrably someone with an English degree? There are so many errors in this article it's very difficult to read. This article gets a 'D'.

Carol, the point is not the grammar but the issue, we are talking about humans here and good grammar is at the background. I m sure you understood everything ... yes you are clever enough.

I think Carol's point is valid. If there are grammatical errors in an article it calls into question the substance of the article. Did the author research the article in the same haphazard fashion as they wrote it? I do not think it is too much to ask for a minimum of proper grammar and spelling at a professional news organization.

No article on slavery is complete without the mention of drug addiction and people being enslaved by debts. Because of these two, 70 or 80% of Americans are in slavery either to Mexico or China.

So Ms. Lulu, the more important the issue, the lower our standards can be when reporting it? Do you apply the same philosophy to all aspects of your life? Anything that really matters you figure you can execute with incompetence, leaving careful work for the unimportant?

        Sorta sounds backwards, no?

There were kids sold in UAE from India and other countries for camel races. It was a State sponsored trafficking as Royal Family members used to love camel races. In case of women trafficking; it is a welcome step for Ryal Families to aid charity missions.

If all you can see when you read an article like this is grammar errors then maybe you should try writing one. Think about how the writer felt after listening to these stories and seeing the aftermath of the lucky ones. The ones that are no longer held in modern day slavery. I would be physically ill, the content means more than a few errors. When I read this all I felt was sympathy... unfortunately it's not something you can buy though it might benefit you.

I know that sounds harsh but I think you need an unedited opinion of what other people think about your comment.

Slavery in Muslim world! Is that really a news? This has been going on for ages now. Islamic countries are the only ones that legally allow slaves in this century.

Ever wonder why Muslims from third world countries migrate to US/Europe and not oil-rich backward Islamic countries.

Battered women and other shelters in the U.S.A. usually only allow the victims to stay for 2 weeks. Allowing the victims a longer stay so that they can really have time to heal is a much better system. Many rich countries have trafficking: think about Denmark. It's what they do for the victims that makes a difference. I wish that America did much more than it does.

Islam4fools – I'm sorry, you are an id..i.o.t. Human trafficking is a huge problem around the world and not just in UAE. In the US alone over 20K girls are forced to sex slavery and in Europe it has become a 10+Bil industry. Everyone should get their blinders of and do whatever it takes to stop this problem (remember – when it will affect you its too late then). I personally know a family (in US) with a daughter abducted when visiting Europe. Anyone who thinks that Europe or US is does not have this problem is a fool.

VERY TRUE! it's unfortunate that people read these stories, and then somehow think that the problem is specific to one country. My philosophy? If it's being done in one country, rest assured, it's being done in others...including the United States and Europe.

Human trafficking is a huge problem. The vast majority of victims are young BOYS who are trafficked for purposes of forced labour. Unfortunately, in the bigoted man-hating feminist west, the only suffering that counts if female suffering. Hence, once again, a made-up story about a made-up problem that simply does not exist.

There were 18 to 24 slaves that lived there. They had 100 adaitiondl slaves that worked in the city outside of the property. They had doors and windows and you usually don't have that much privacy as a slave. The quarters are larger than most areas. The paint had very rich colors that were very expensive. Slaves living on the plantation had more freedom to do what they wanted; especially in church.

I do believe from what I read in both Soldier of Fortune and National Geographic that Saudi Arabia is the worst nation when it comes to luring people with job promises and then forcing them into slavery when they arrive. Not only that is that the Saudi princes love to come to American and abduct people, especially children for – I won't elaborate. However I will say this, if our gov't was to publicly acknowledge that number of people who are being abducted by the Saudis each year, they would have to declare a stare of emergency. Yes, my fellow Americans, it IS THAT BAD. Those kids you see on the walls and milk cartons, well it fails to mention that they are more than likely NOT in the USA any more. Yes, our government knows about this, but like always, good relations with their oil rich bungy buddies is ALWAYS much more important than the lives of a few thousand working or middle class nobodies.

What kind of parent would sell her daughter into prostitution? And why don't they want them back? Because they are "damaged goods" that would tarnish the family honor? These parents are no better than the traffickers.

Children are not just sold away for sex, they are also made to work as servants; made to clean and wash all day long. Even educated people like doctors and engineers in the entire Arab world "buy" these children and pay little or nothing providing only sleeping place and food. I write because I have personally seen this going on in my landlord's home in an Arab country where I used to work in the past. My landlord was a respected gynaecologist, but his wife made the young female child work all day at scrubbing the staircase, washing clothes of the entire family, etc. The child was about 10 years old. I suspect the child was from a very poor beduin or Palestinian refugee family. Slavery in the Arab world is nothing new. It has been going on since centuries. It is ingrained in the Muslim culture.

Yes Mary I am serious. I read the book and whctaed the film very closely. And trust me, I am well aware of men in mountainous regions and their connections to the Confederacy. I am a descendant of these very people (or rather, the Northern Alabama variant), who by the way, owned slaves and supported secession. My point, which you should have picked up if you were paying attention, was that the author casts all Confederates as the same with the same opinions on the issues that they were somehow duped by the slave-holding class into fighting a war to protect a rich man's wealth. This is repeated over and over and over again in the book and the film and it is absolutely not correct. Yes, some people felt this way but most did not. I have read their letters and diaries and can attest to this point with numerous examples. I used Inman to make my point precisely because the author used him to make his. It was done for the sake of argument .perhaps a subtle one, yes but a valid one. Thanks for the comment, by the way always happy to argue with you

Believe it or not, there is this thing called "Karma." What goes around, comes around. Yes, these men and women who traffic in human lives are egregious. However, bad people are allowed to do evil things because good people allow these things to (continuously) happen. There is a Chinese proverb that says: "Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. " How wonderful if everyone writing (and in agreement that these are horrific acts), would do just this . . . it would magnify the problem and perhaps the solution(s). "Muchos pocos hacen un mucho." Many littles make a lot.

The question is if we believe that all children are sacred, do we just talk, write or consistently act (like good, grown up human beings)?

As also is said in Spanish "Lo que en la calle no puedes ver, en tu casa lo has de tener ." What you don't like in others could be in your own house. And while the grammar in the article may not be "good," that is not the worst thing about the article. For in the seconds it takes us to read and write about this global inhumanity, thousands , if not millions of children and women are being tortured. What "good" will you do? Or will your behavior be as "bad" as the grammar?

@Islam4fools .... If i point out 10 cases of sex trafficking and slavery within non Muslim countries in last 6 months where the criminals are not even Muslim, will you delete your ‘offensive’ comments and accept Islam as your religion?

@ruemorgue ... Really? hmmm. Can you please share a source on which you are basing the claim that it ONLY happens in Islamic countries? I actually recall an article from couple of days ago on this very site about a non Muslim woman streaming abuse of her daughter over webcam to entire internet public ... but I guess you would not have read that article.

Human trafficking with sexual abuse happens EVERYWHERE!! It is a real problem. What you have missed in this article is the fact that we do not even know if the criminals are Muslims or not? The women as stated in the article have come to look for a better life style TO A MUSLIM COUNTRY. People responsible for putting them into this horrific trade should be given the hardest punishments and not the Muslim world because it is trying to provide a better life style to people who are looking to get away from their own country for any specific reason. I am really amazed to see comments from some of you "educated" people and how you are racist against Muslims. I am a Muslim but you will never see me bad mouth Christianity or any other religion simply because of the fact that even though my English grammar and spelling is not great, my mom and dad taught me to never bad mouth ones beliefs or their religion and stand against what’s wrong and stand up for what’s right regardless religion, skin color or country of origin.

I am a soldier currently in Iraq. I've been in Bosnian and Kosovo for 4 tours. I do not like violence and I don't even agree sometimes with what my country is asking me to do. I do this because I feel people deserve a right to choose and to me that’s worth fighting for. After saying that, I cannot think of a higher honor as a citizen of this world than attacking and killing slavers. You cannot imagine some of the atrocities I've seen, but at least those people are dead. A slave isn't even given that option. They are forced to live through it all. To be a involved in the slave trade, I cannot think of a more heinous act against man/woman kind.

It's called extreme poverty. If your family is starving, the family figures that if they sell some children, at least they will live; the family doesn't want those children back. That doesn't make it right. Birth control is better, but many people want big families because of the status, but then can't feed them all. A government that encourages birth control doesn't get votes; large families make large voting blocks, so it is defeated, so the whole world is having a population explosion that will kill us all.

When Mohammed took the wives of those he had just slain and had sex with them that very night, what were they? Slaves or willing? It not that there aren't good things about islam, its just that there aren't nearly enough. We should all know more about the perfect muslim Mohammed. About his vicims, those he killed, enslaved, and raped. About the many "satanic versus" that he had to trim out of his own teachings after the contradictions in them became too much to defend. Unfortunately, CNN and other media have decided that islamists are a protected class than can never be criticized. Not even when their own coworkers are taken and gang raped in broad daylight.

Slavery won't go away until Islam does. Having non-muslims as slave's is a gift from allah to his faithful. If it weren't so, Mohammed wouldn't have said so, and wouldn't have had so many slaves himself. And Mohammed was the perfect muslim. So how can you condemn slavery without condemning islam?

The "religion of peace" is a cult of death and destruction.

It was the realization of Christian thought and teachings that finally ended the practice in the West, but islamic thought and teachings promote it.

To begin with, the Quran justifies slavery, and often mentions slaves. Here are some relevant verses:

33:50 – "Prophet, We have made lawful to you the wives to whom you have granted dowries and the slave girls whom God has given you as booty."

This verse clearly shows that Muslims believe that taking slaves in war was a God-given right. These slaves were considered 'booty' or the spoils of war. As the saying goes: to the victors go the spoils.

23:5 – "... except with their wives and slave girls, for these are lawful to them:..."

The passage's context here (not quoted in full) details how Muslim males are allowed to have sexual relations with their wives and slave girls. Implicit in this is that Muslim males had slave-concubines. 70:30 is basically a repeat of 23:5.

Ibn Sa'd's "Tabaqat", gives a clear description of Muhammad having "relations" with at least one of his slave girls. Muhammad had sexual relations with Mariyah, his Coptic slave. Mariyah and her sister, Sirin were slaves given as gifts to Muhammad. Muhammad gave Sirin to Hasan Thabit, the poet. Ibn Sa'd says that Muhammad "liked Mariyah, who was of white complexion, with curly hair and pretty." [Taken from Ibn Sa'd's "Kitab al-Tabaqat al-Kabir" (Book of the Major Classes), p151].

Ibn Sa'd also writes that Mariyah bore Muhammad a son named Ibrahim. He died 18 months later. Sa'd writes: "If he had lived, no maternal uncle of his would have remained in bondage", p164. This shows that there were other Coptic slaves owned by the Muslims.

The Quran also instructs Muslims NOT to force their female slaves into prostitution (24:34), and even allows Muslims to marry slaves if they so desire (4:24), and to free them at times as a penalty for crime or sin (4:92, 5:89, 58:3) and even allows slaves to buy their liberty, if they meet certain of their master's conditions (24:33). [90:10 'freeing of a bondsman' refers to Muslims ransoming other Muslims who were slaves of non-Muslims.]

While I think it's nice to allow a slave to obtain his freedom, (at his master's discretion) it is tragic that Islam allows them to be enslaved in the first place. That's like robbing a bank and giving some of the money back to the bank, and thinking you did the right thing!

The above verses show that taking slaves was ordained by Allah, and that it was permissible for Muslim males to have sex with their female slaves. It also shows that slaves were a valuable commodity to the Muslims, otherwise, Allah would not have imposed the penalty of freeing a slave to make up for a crime.

There are hundreds of Hadith that deal with slavery. Whole chapters of Hadith are dedicated to dealing with the taxation, treatment, sale, and jurisprudence of slaves. In addition to this, numerous Hadith mention slaves, and their relation to their Muslim masters. Here is a selection of Hadith on slaves: [all Hadith are from Sahih Bukhari, unless noted.]

Vol. 7-#137 Narrated Abu al-Khudri: "We got female captives in the war booty and we used to do coitus interruptus with them. So we asked Allah's messenger about it and he said, "Do you really do that?" repeating the question thrice, "There is no soul that is destined to exist but will come into existence, till the Day of Resurrection.""

Here, Muslims had taken female slaves, and had sex with them. Muhammad approved of this. He only admonished them not to practice coitus interruptus.

Vol. 5-#459 [This Hadith is similar to the above. However, additional details are added]. Narrated Ibn Muhairiz: "I entered the mosque and saw Abu Khudri and sat beside him and asked him about coitus interruptus. Abu said, "We went out with Allah's messenger for the Ghazwa (attack upon) Banu Mustaliq and we received captives from among the Arab captives and we desired women and celibacy became hard on us and we loved to do coitus interruptus. So when we intended to do coitus interruptus we said "How can we do coitus interruptus without asking Allah's messenger while he is present among us?" We asked (him) about it and he said "It is better for you not to do so, for if any soul (till the Day of Resurrection) is predestined to exist, it will exist.""

Here, the Muslims attacked the Banu Mustaliq, and took slaves. The female slaves were distributed as booty to the Muslim soldiers. Being away from home, the soldiers became horny, and want to have sexual relations with the newly captured female slaves. They went to Muhammad and asked about coitus interruptus. He told them not to practice that, but to complete the sexual act with the slaves. Related Hadith show that they didn't want to get the women pregnant because they wanted to be able to sell them later on. Under Islamic law they were not allowed to sell pregnant female slaves.
In effect, Muhammad okayed the rape of female prisoners.

Vol. 3-#765 Narrated Kuraib: the freed slave of Ibn 'Abbas, that Maimuna bint Al-Harith told him that she manumitted a slave-girl without taking the permission of the Prophet. On the day when it was her turn to be with the Prophet, she said, "Do you know, O Allah's Apostle, that I have manumitted my slave-girl?" He said, "Have you really?" She replied in the affirmative. He said, "You would have got more reward if you had given her (i.e. the slave-girl) to one of your maternal uncles."
Here a woman frees a slave girl, but Muhammad says that she would have gotten more (heavenly) reward if she had given the slave one of her uncles, thus keeping the slave in slavery.

Vol. 7-#734 "....At the door of the [Muhammad's] room there was a slave to whom I went and said, "Ask the permission for me to enter".....
This is a long Hadith, and the quote reveals that Muhammad has slaves working in his house.

Vol. 7-#344 Narrated Anas: "Allah's messenger went to the house of his slave tailor, and he was offered a dish of gourd of which he started eating. I have loved to eat gourd since I saw Allah's messenger eating it."
This Hadith shows that another one of Muhammad's slaves was a tailor. #346 gives additional details.

Vol. 5-#541 Narrated Abu Huraira: When we conquered Khaibar, we gained neither gold nor silver as booty, but we gained cows, camels, goods and gardens. Then we departed with Allah's apostle to the valley of Al-Qira, and at that time Allah's messenger had a slave called Midam who had been presented to him by one of Banu Ad-Dibbab. While the slave was dismounting the saddle of Allah's messenger an arrow the thrower of which was unknown, came and hit him....."
This Hadith shows that Muhammad held a slave, who was struck with an arrow.

Vol. 5-#637 Narrated Buraida: The prophet sent Ali to Khalid to bring the Khumus ([one fifth] of the booty) and I hated Ali, and Ali had taken a bath (after a sexual act with a slave girl from the Khumus). I said to Khalid, "Don't you see this (i.e. Ali)?" When we reached the prophet I mentioned that to him. He said, "O Buraida! Do you hate Ali?" I said, "Yes" He said, "Do you hate him, for he deserves more than that from the Khumus."

The note for this Hadith says "Buraida hated Ali because he had taken a slave girl form the booty and considered that as something not good." Here Ali took a newly captured slave girl, and had sex with her. When Muhammad was told about it, he approved of it. Note that slaves were considered as booty, and as a man’s property, they can use the female slave for sex, i.e., rape them.

Vol. 5-#512 Narrated Anas: ".....The prophet had their warriors killed, their offspring and woman taken as captives...."
This Hadith details the attack on the Jews of Khaibar. Again, many of the women and children were taken and made into slaves.

Vol. 5-Chapter 67 Narrated Ibn Ishaq: The Ghazwa (attack upon) Uyaina bin Hisn waged against Banu Al-Anbar, a branch of Banu Tamim. The prophet sent Uyaina to raid them. He raided them and killed some of them and took some others as captives.
Here, Muhammad sent out his men to attack another tribe. The killed some of them and took others as captives. Once again, the Muslims attacked a neighboring tribe.

Vol. 5-#182 Narrated Aisha: "Abu Bakr had a slave who used to give him some of his earnings.

Vol. 5-#50 Narrated Amr Maimun: "....The slave of Al-Mughira..."

[another Muslim who owned the slave that killed Umar.]
....Al-Abbas had the greatest number of slaves.... [Al-Abbas, the future Muslim leader had many slaves].

Vol. 9-#462 Narrated Aisha: "...Furthermore you may ask the slave girl who will tell you the truth". So the prophet asked Barira (my slave girl)...

    Aisha had her own slave.

    Also, volume 7-#s 845, 341, 352, 371, 410, 413, 654, ch. 22, ch. 23, and

    volume 1-#s 29, 439, 661,

    volume 9-#s ch. 23, ch. 32, #293, 296, 277, 100, 80.

All these Hadith detail that many other Muslims owned slaves.

According to the Hughes Dictionary of Islam, slaves have few civil or legal rights. For example:

    a) Muslim men were allowed to have sex anytime with females slaves – Sura 4:3, 4:29, 33:49.

    b) Slaves are as helpless before their masters as idols are before God – Sura 16:77

    c) According to Islamic Tradition, people at the time of their capture were either to be killed, or enslaved. Shows you that they were at the bottom of the barrel to start with.

    d) According to Islamic jurisprudence, slaves were merchandise. The sales of slaves was in accordance with the sale of animals.

    e) Muhammad ordered that some slaves who were freed by their master be RE-ENSLAVED!

    f) It is permissible under Islamic law to whip slaves.

    g) According to Islam, a Muslim could not be put to death for murdering a slave. Ref. 2:178 and the Jalalayn confirm this.

    h) According to Islam, the testimony of slaves is not admissible in court. Ibn Timiyya and Bukhari state this.

    i) According to Islamic jurisprudence, slaves cannot choose their own marriage mate. – Ibn Hazm, vol. 6, part 9.

    j) According to Islamic jurisprudence, slaves can be forced to marry who their masters want. – Malik ibn Anas, vol. 2, page 155.

Slavery continued in Islamic lands from about the beginning to this very day. Muslim rulers always found support in the Quran to call 'jihad', partly for booty, part for the purpose of taking slaves. As the Islamic empire disintegrated into smaller kingdoms, and each ruler was able to decide what Islam's theology really meant. Usually, he always found it in support of what he wanted to do. Their calls of jihad against their neighbor facilitated the taking of slaves for Islam. The Quran and Islamic jurisprudence support the taking of slaves, so, those petty Muslim rulers were following the Quran when they needed slaves.

i have checked what you mentioned about hadith and what is mention in Quran, it didnt show any of what u stated and i have searched for translatation and it was clear that
mohammed has really order to stop slavery .....i dont know where did u get this info, maybe from corrupted people who hate muslims.

but let me remind you one thing. the worst slavery in the history was in the ages of rome and AMERICA, and Europe, you people used to divide community according to class , think it is called the dark ages of christanity. then came the US where they used to use black people like me for slavery.

as a black person i have read the Quran and it is mention that GOD does not differentiate between colors and gender. we are all one in front him and it has order to stop slavery.

i think u are those who believe in one color which is white like you. thank GOD i am muslim , and as colored person i am proud to be one.

What about the time when the spanish colonized South America with the proverbial "3 C's" ( Commerce, Civilization and Christianity)? As result they went about ethnically cleansing the aboriginal racial people of South America by taking new born babies by the legs and banging their head against the bark of a tree whilst the baby screams in pain. They used to kill aboriginal babies in the presence of a padre until the brains of the babies oozed out of their nose, eyes and ears and the baby eventually died. What about such practices that was actually legislated by the Roman Catholic Church at that time and was considered very "Christian" which was later on stopped.

There had been a history hypocrisy in Roman Catholicism and the Catholic church regarding their life of celibacy. Even recently there had been case where a Roman Catholic preacher or pasteur had been accused of child molestation secretively. I mean that is only a case where a member of the Roman Catholic Church got caught for such behavior, what about all the Christian padres who goes about being promiscuous without being caught? What about all those unaccounted crimes committed by the Roman Catholic Church.

At least Islam is not as hypocritical as other religions such as Christianity that tries to undermine the very natural characteristic of human beings which is the desire for sex.

Islam is willing to talk about sex and sexual relationship in a rather frank and a healthy way where people of all generations, of all time, of all cultures can relate to. Salvery, was an institution that was present at the time when Islam descended on mankind and Islam therefore addresses these issues according to the customs and norms of that time. Quite obvious;y at modern time when slavery is abolished and eliminated, those norms will no longer be in practice.

At least Islam is not hypocritical like Roman Catholics regarding advocacy of celibacy as the ultimate purity of a man neither is Islam unnatural and absurd like those Protestant Americans in USA who are gradually legalizing homosexual and gay rights in their own country to create another Sodom and Gomorrhea all over again and actually advocate homosexuality as a choice of sexual orientation.

Islam is a natural, impartial, and a very productive way of life, far superior to the ways of life presented by all other religions of this world.

I have to let you all know that the US has a slave problem as well. People have been smuggaling women and children over from south america for years. Many illegals that americans hate so much dont choose to be here they are forced so that american men can pay to have sex with them. The women are promised freedom and thats what they get... Its closer to home then you realize. I am a canadian married to a veteran of the US marines and he will tell anyone who will listen that because someone is muslim does not make them agree with these things you all are talking about. You can not classify a whole group of people for one individuals actions. He says some of the kindest people he met were muslim when he was in iraq. He will also say that a lot of american soldiers were the ones doing the raping even to women they were serving with. He says its sad but the men would get off because when you say your with the us military you can get away with anything. Americans think you are all heroes when there are some but not

I agree with you that the sex slavery is not a Muslim problem. It happens in many democratic countries. The problem is global and should be resolved globally, not for one or another country.

As for the US soldiers raping when on war, even their military female colleagues – I think that there should be a Military Court for that – no matter who you are, the crime is a crime, the victim is a victim. It's something that remains for the whole life and there should be a justice. No woman or a child deserve it, no matter where they live.

I greet CNN for that Great Project, because this is a problem all over the world, not only in the UAE. The fact that a media with an international reputation as CNN stays beside fighting with this evil, shows that there is a chance to change things. Sex slavery is everywhere, where poor people live and are allured with promises for a better life. There should be a better informational campaign for finding a job abroad and a better control of the process. After the slavery, at all, has been forbidden and the technological revolution lets that happen, it's the last point where we will know that the people on the Earth live freely, no matter where they have been born and raised.

Taking a worker's apssport is exploitative. It is also probably illegal. It even be kidnapping. It is not slavery.Let's talk slavery for a moment:Do the worker receive no pay? Does the law consider the worker property of his boss? Can their boss sell the worker to another boss? Can the worker walk away? Can the worker escape without being chased by slave catchers? Are the children of workers slaves by birth? It is somewhere between absurd and offensive to seriously compare the issue of exploited workers to slavery. Have we so quickly forgotten what slavery is? And no, 1,000 detected does not necessarily imply a lot more undetected. By that logic, the more we "free" the more there are "enslaved." And that kind of logic makes my head hurt.

Samui, I agree with you 100% about the roman catholic church, I was raised catholic and then when I actually questioned it I realized the teachings are sooo backward, they will never admit there was a female pope, pope joan was her name. I actually dont agree with any religion, they all have there good and bad points. I believe religion is and always has been the downfall of humanity since the begining of time. We are all just people looking for the answers and no one will have them until we die. I believe everyone is intitaled to theyre own beliefs no matter if I think they are twisted. Whos to say im right or wrong. I believe in being kind and to forgive others. There is some things unforgivable like crimes on children and those who cannot defend themselves...

Bottom line.....human trafficing is a world wide catastrophe. Women and children are enslaved for various reasons and it is such a vast problem that even the Human Rights Organizations cannot keep up with it. As with everything in this world, demand creates the supply. Until we as a human race stop this it will go on until infinity. Religion, race, age, etc. has nothing to do with it. It's human greed.

So, does this mean that like if we get "Rock Star Rich" instead of losing half overnight to a trophy wife we can just set up a mansion in Dubai and have a few Fillipino/African, other "Trafficked" women slaves. Cute little maid costumes? Belly dancer costumes? A dungeon to spank them in when they get naughty? Of course it's an Islamic country so no drinking booze in public and be very polite, respectful, etc. in public, that's fine:-)

I applaud CNN for focusing world attention on modern slavery. Human trafficking, slavery and the horrific abuse that victims suffer are crimes against humanity. By bringing modern day slavery out into the open and through supporting and listening to the stories of survivors, we will be better able to identify the perpetrators and beneficiaries and hold them accountable. I grew up in a middle class " Christian" family in a western country and as a child I was subject to physical and sexual abuse within my own family – I was my father's sex slave and "prostitute". I eventually escaped by running away and becoming a street kid. Life for a teenage girl in this situation is often just a repeat of the abuse already suffered, and it was only when I saw a program on TV interviewing Miriam Saphira about the sexual abuse of children within the family that I realised I was not alone in my pain and suffering, and a break through occurred for me. To see my reality being publicly acknowledged on TV and to hear IT WAS NOT MY FAULT changed my life.
Around this time in the west the Womens Refuge movement began, as well as public education about the extent of sexual abuse of children within the family and the institutional, personal & societal factors that contribute to it happening. Programs have been established to support victims and to bring the abusers to justice.
It is wonderful to read about the work of the refuge in Abu Dhabi. I know on a personal level how much of a difference they will make in the lives of the women they help. It is the responsibility of all of us to do whatever we can to expose and prevent modern day slavery in all it's forms and to support the victims and survivors to begin their healing.

Thanks, this is a great list. I’m now following around half the folks I’ve commented on – so for me this has been a double win – the comment and the further reading material that helps me and my blog!

I’m amazed, I must say. Rarely do I encounter a blog that’s both equally educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you've hit the nail on the head. The issue is something too few men and women are speaking intelligently about. I am very happy I stumbled across this in my search for something regarding this.
