slave labor is a serious topic, but I mean when a consumer goes to buy a product there is almost seldom a chance the consumer can determine the exact factory it was made, or what labour laws were enforced in its production. Slave labour or child labour needs to be combated at the government & retail level not a consumer. Made in _____ country it far to vague of a label to put on a product for a consumer to know the full manufacturing process. Legislation needs to be passed, harsh penalties increased and heavy handed enforcement at a state and federal level to combat if slave labour is used a company should be not allowed to import and companies assets in the country seized and management sentenced to mandatory imprisonment. .

The rug Industry has lost credibility. The handmade rug business is very open to abuse due to the complexities and vast variations in materials, quality, origins and designs.
Always always buy from someone established, who has a reputation and who has been open for business a long time. I am the fourth generation of a rug-making family and believe me, it's a very small industry and everyone knows what everyone else is doing. I am all for transparency and these types of "certifications" like Goodweave and Rugmark. However, at the end of the day, if a merchant engages in these unethical practices, truth always always comes out and they don't stay open for very long.
This is a good start but anyone who cares about slavery, children, wildlife or the environment needs to understand that everything Made in China purchased in your country contributes to the abuse of the people who work in the factories. We call for a total and immediate Boycott of China as the only way to get that government to stop their abhorrent practices and join the civilized world. Go around your house and check the labels of everything you have bought, regardless of what company's name is on it. Then go to the retailer where you bought them and tell the manager that you will not shop at their store until they stop stocking goods Made in China. There is nothing manufactured in China that you need and which cannot be found from another country. Boycott China. Enough Already!

Child labour undoubtedly is a heinous crime and should not exist in any form in labour intensive industries or elsewhere where there is risk on the very life and hinders the physical and mental development of a child. It should be stopped immediately and you and me can do it together. So, next time you buy a rug, make sure that it has GoodWeave child labor free certification label on it. If you stop buying rugs without GoodWeave labels, rug manufacturers will be forced to manufacture rugs without child labor. “Let’s all make a small effort, be socially responsible and do what we can do to bring smiles on the faces of children”.
If that is the situation, then why not we buy the GoodWeave certified rugs? Think once.
Buy from a reputable retailer. In this age of twitter and Facebook, reputation is everything.
Could the average American afford most products if we eliminated slave labor?
Another fine organization is Care for Fair which has been doing this for years. They have built many schools in Indian rug producing areas, provide health care and other services. It is an organization well known to the rug trade and it seems strange that some traders found it necessary to start a competing organization rather than supporting and expanding an existing one.
Are there perhaps some egos at work here??
Does Care and Fair inspect and monitor rug producing factories? Building schools and and providing few vbasic services does not stop child labour. Unless we tighten the noose in neck of rug producers to stop using child labourers, child labours will continue to exist in the rug industry. Strict, fair and regular inspection and monitoring of rug producing factories is the the only way to control the use of child labour, which GoodWeave is doing in the rug producing countries, and on the basis of which it certifies a rug from being produced under child labor free environment.
Actually, this is a good alternative to the unions. Would be nice to make some products in the US once again and be able to compete with products we can build at price points we can make money. Looks like the kids are having fun just pay them in candy.
We have Republican governors trying to take us back to the days of child labor. Go Rep. Govs., make those lazy poor kids work.
Buy made in America you won't need to worry so much.
