Real men join stars in fight against slavery

Don’t miss: Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore talk to Piers Morgan live on “Piers Morgan Tonight,” Thursday at 9 p.m. ET on CNN.

Movie star couple Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher are launching a new campaign Monday against child sex slavery.

A host of other stars, including Justin Timberlake and Sean Penn, signed up for "Real Men Don't Buy Girls" aimed at stopping people buying underage girls for sex.

The Demi and Ashton Foundation, or DNA Foundation, hopes to raise awareness of the global problem that is also a curse in small towns and big cities across the United States.

Kutcher told CNN: "We want to create a cultural shift in the way men and women view young people selling themselves for sex."

He added: "Sex trafficking is an elastic trade. If you can raise the price for sex you can actually reduce the demand. As you reduce the demand that raises the price.

"[That means] you can, ultimately, put it out of business, and the way to do that is by attacking the demand because the supply is endless."

The "real men" campaign highlights the brutal reality of children forced into prostitution and gives advice on how people can help, even without leaving their home.

It features videos of male stars doing "real man" jobs like shaving and ironing, and then offers users the chance of a supporting role by getting their own photo into the videos and sharing it with online friends.

Join the campaign and check out more videos

In the United States there are 100,000 to 300,000 American children between 11 and 14 who are vulnerable to being sold for sex every year, according to Shared Hope's 2009 National Report on Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking.

The report emphasizes any child can fall victim to the sex traffickers but highlights abused kids, children of drug users and runaways as particularly at risk.

Another problem identified by Shared Hope is that child sex slaves are often misidentified as prostitutes, and therefore criminals, rather than a trafficked child, and therefore the victim.

Kutcher said: "Right now most of these girls, if they are arrested, end up in juvey being prosecuted as opposed to be treated like a victim of rape. For the most part the guy is not charged with statutory rape which he should be."

To cut the demand side of the sex trade, Kutcher said: "First and foremost is do not participate, either you or your friends. If it's your friend then you say "I don't want to hang out with someone participating in that because you're hurting people."

"Secondly people can advocate for stronger laws supporting the rights of the victims. There are only six U.S. states that treat the girl like the victim."

He added: "I have seen guys make that decision to buy sex and when the girl shows up it's not something to brag about but at the same time it's not something anybody considers to be that awful.

"If we are going to make a social shift it can no longer be acceptable."

The DNA Foundation aims to eliminate child sex slavery worldwide. With its "real men" initiative it hopes to educate Americans that the problem is in their home towns as well, and includes American kids suffering.

Kutcher said: "The best way to measure success of "Real men don't buy girls" would be the number of people who drive through to our action tabs [on the website] and start taking pro-active steps like cleaning up the web by flagging those pages where there is most likely underage solicitation taking place.

"The internet is littered with this kind of stuff. If people put on their 'internet police badges' and they start enforcing that their internet is not going to have this type of transaction on it we will be able to see those metrics."

What in the world? No one can campaign against one social problem unless they campaign against another social problem first. Why? How about we applaud their efforts to stop the sexual slavery of children? That seems like a GREAT place to start.

No, no, no, before you do anything you have to first do something else. And that other thing you did first doesn't count unless it was preceded by another thing which in and of itself must be qualified by being done after another valid thing, etc. and so on.

        Didn't you know that?

we need to fight against prostitution first because here in Kenya when you go to the street where sex worker find their customers you see small girls who are under age from i2 to 18 years old and i feel so sad,and i don't think their are doing this because they want to.

They should get his economics straight. If you reduce demand, the price goes up? Since when? And also how is he going to increase the price in order to reduce demand? Put a tax on it? Would the higher price only increase the supply? That entire paragraph didn't make sense at all. But the purpose of the effort is still worthy, I guess.

The protection of animals is very important as is the protection of people. There's no choice here...both need protection and neither one of them should be sacrificed for the other. They both deserve our utmost efforts. As a matter of fact, animals need more protection...they're totally innocent and unable to protect themselves from predators out there. People can speak up and get what they need.

Post that stuff in forums where it belongs and allow these people to get on with their important work.

No. Illegal immigrants are in a position to be taken advantage of to some degree because they are not here legally. Slaves are not infrequently raped numerous times per day as their body is rented out by a pimp. There's a subtle difference. Also, they ARE getting their own house in order–slavery is a problem in the US as well as around the world. Emphasizing the US population at risk helps get the public engaged, which helps end the problem for everyone.

Fighting about things done hundreds of years ago is far less important than working to prevent and to stop the slavery that is occurring today. Today, no person–regardless of whether than are a first-generation legal immigrant, a native american, an undocumented migrant worker, or a random middle class American teen from Ohio or Nevada–should be held as a slave.

Yago–It is all a matter of perspective and how far back you want to take it. By your reasoning, anyone living outside of Africa is an immigrant as that is where all our ancestors originated. The movement of people around the world has a checkered history, some good, some bad. None of us has any say in where we are born. We only have some say in what we do and where we go after that. I don't know where you live or how long your ancestors came there. If you feel strongly about the justice or injustice of the movement of people around the world and think everyone should return to their ancestral lands or have to accept the blame for whatever injustices you wish to assign to ancestral immigrants, i hope you are prepared to apply the same standard to yourself.

The point that's being made with this campaign is that we need to change the way we view forced prostitution in general and child prostitution in particular, so that men no longer view either practice as acceptable. While the supply is endless, the demand can diminish if laws against slavery were enforced and those who engage child prostitutes were charged with statutory rape. Reform in this area of law enforcement and jurisprudence would go a long way to removing the appeal of cheap sex and put doubt in the minds of johns.

Cultural shift, however, is the key. Some men will bristle at yet another intrusion on "masculine culture", but men are also husbands, fathers and brothers. It may seem a throwback, but appealing to the protective side of men will get them on board.

Man you are all clueless. No one is an immigrant and no one is a non-immigrant. People come to the land they are on from other lands since the beginning of time. So... who owned the land originally? Who is the first to have their land stolen from them by others? The answer is simple= pond scum is the first ethnic group to be robbed of its' native lands. Yep! Some stinking piece of pond scum evolved into a slimy toad and crawled out onto land and formed a coalition with other slimy toad like creatures and they forcibly removed the pond scum from the water to make it cleaner and prettier looking for slightly less slimy lizard creatures to build mud hut style condos on the water front.
I am forming a commission to study the historical dessimation of pond scum in the beginning of time. Please send money orders, cash, or credit (no checks please) to the following adress.................... and remember, your money really helps eradicate the social and economic injustices inflicted on pond scum for all these millions of years. Thank you and Satan bless thy day!

This is an issue that is close to my heart for a number of reasons. I am happy that People that society looks up to have taken a stand on this issue. Sex Slavery is an issue that is mostly overlooked. Its a huge problem that effects alot of young people all over the world, not just in the places that most people expect.

I have to agree with you Moris. Also, why is CNN trying to promote this by using celebrities that may be an underlying cause to the problem. I would have more respect for Celebs who at least showed change in their own lives. No one is asking for perfection, but displaying self control and some type of morality is a component of these issues, and Hollywood displays none of this.

Seriously? Someone who is well-known and well-liked, even if you dislike him, is speaking out against slavery, and your response is he probably caused it? Praise people for the good work that they do–even if you condemn them because you believe they are immoral for doing something else. And do not insult someone by saying they are responsible for child sex trafficking when you have no evidence. Hollywood can do more to help. Don't condemn them when they try.

Yeah, a perfect example is the new Camelot series on Starz. I just watched most of the first episode 9 I fell asleep before it finished). There were nude sex scenes with each of the central characters except one (that's at least 7 characters if I remember correctly) plus clothed sex going on in the background of a few scenes. There was so much sex that the show came off as a high grade soft porn flick more than a dramatic retelling of the Arthur legend.

Here is what it is all about. It is not about slavery. It is about prostitution. You see, women cannot bear the thought of a willing woman benig available to a man for uncommitted sex. They loose control of the situation when they can no longer use sex to control men.....and they talk about slavery.

Many of these women also say abortion is thier right. So they think women should own thier body with respect to abortion, but the State should own that same body with respect to prostitution.

Naked women in food commercials, naked women in toiletries commercials, even household commercials is disgusting. Why don't they have naked men in all of these commercials? Sex slavery has a source, attack that source then you solve the problem.

I do agree that a big part of the problem is American marketing/advertising via movies, video games, music, commercials, etc. Sex is constantly pushed in our face to sell something. Our God-given sex drives are not the sin, but corporations using our sensitive sex drives to sell products easily is a sin. American corporations are marketing experts targeting our emotional/sexual hormonel. While sex is constantly thrown at us, it's unnaturally increasing our already strong sexual emotions. It's by the sheer goodness of God that everyone in this country are not a cheating, child-molesting, homosexual freak.

Just take a look at the music videos and how they exploit women. Yet we continue to give these "entertainers" awards and promote their music by buying it and listening to it. Every day that passes it seems we have less and less principles. Pretty soon they'll just lower the legal age of consent to 12 or 14 and it won't be illegal anymore. That's how we fix things in the US now, we just lower the standards.

These are all the same actors and Hollywood scum who can't understand why the U.S. won't drop charges against Roman Polanski. Roman Polanski was applauded by the actor's guild and motion picture academy. So are they saying if you're a Hollywood mogul, it's alright to have sex with minors?

      April 11, 2011 at 8:46 am | Reply
      • mjbestever

Roman Polanski got screwed up in the head when his then wife of just over a year, Sharon Tate, was murdered by the Manson Family in his home while he wasn't there, along with 3 other friends. Not only that, but she was pregnant with his baby...that same blood used to write "Helter Skelter" all over the walls of his California home. Searching for happiness again, he then looked for that rising "star" just like Tate was and hooked up with a younger 15-17 year old. A year after that...a 13 year old. That was 30+ years ago. Definitely not ok, but that is why you may not see as much venom being spewed as usual. Some tend to show understanding of what was happening to Polanski at the time and why some wouldn't mind to see him be able to come back. Right, wrong, or indifferent....real talk.

the man raped a 13 yr old. then he ran away and hid from prosecution. he did not serve his time. anyone else who ran from prosecution would be held accountable. bad things happen to people from the time they are little children and defenseless that help to create their adult world. we still prosecute their criminal behavior.

        April 11, 2011 at 10:56 am |
  6. Ken

This is getting annoying! people say that they are trying to help the children, but what about these children who grow up to be women? They are still treated like criminals. If a girl/woman wants to sell her body to make a little cash, that's fine with me. It shouldn't be a crime to a woman to entertain men, it should be a crime for men to pay for this service. If one were to offer all of these horrid scum bags buying the girls three hots and a cot for ten years then you would see supply drop because demand would fall. The internet is full of porn and the scum would rather stay home than face a possible ten year sentence. but this will never happen because it is the politions who are the largest comsumers. Take this fight to washington and you will most likely see some lobbiest say we should not violate the rights of consumers. Just make it super illegal to purchase and 100% okay to sell then youi will cut demand. For the child traffickers this should be a life sentence. I would allow my taxes to be raised to pay the cost of housing these animals for life! But this is only a dream, because everyday you can see another polition getting busted for buying a girl/woman for sexual RAPE. It is the same as rape to pay a girl for sex so you should be charged with raoe. Most of them were forced into tjhe business by rape and the people supporting this by purchasing should be charged with RAPE!

    Thank you

I agree to a large extent. Legalizing it, having women tested and licensed regularly would go a long way to making underage prostitution a thing of the past.

      April 11, 2011 at 8:30 am | Reply
      • Sam

What problem would that solve exactly? Legalized prostitution isn't going to make people want underage kids less. All legalized prostitution will do is make it easier to hide among the legitimate. It will also expand the client base making policing and legislating even more difficult. And testing would be a wonderful idea if it was practical. You have to wait at least three weeks after infection for accurate results for HIV. Do you think the prostitute or her clients are really going to wait that long to have sex before they get their results back? The same effect applies to other diseases too. It's too misleading to say that will make prostitution safe. It won't. I get the that adults should be able to do what they like. I'm really not opposed. But what you suggest is only going to make the problem worse and get a lot of people unnecessarily hurt.

        April 11, 2011 at 12:09 pm |
    • spikette

countries that have legalized has found sex slave increase. then the police are hampered on stopping the crime. sweden has found criminalizing the buyer and not criminalizing the prostitute the most effective way of dealing with the situation. the criminal element of the equation does not go away, but increases, with legalization.

      April 11, 2011 at 9:45 am | Reply
      • Phil

What you don't know about Sweden is that it now has the highest increase of rape. And the highest amount of rape complaints in Europe. If you think Sweden has solved the problem, then you are totally mistaken..... Sweden never had a prostitute problem. There were only around 2500 women working as prostitutes at any given time. Now the problems have magnified in other areas. Instead of actually lessening the problem Sweden now criminalises men. Men who are non lawbreakers. And apart from the mess it has created, Sweden authorities now assume they can invade the private lives of two consenting adults.... like I said in an earlier Sweden is the KGB.......Individual rights there are being gradually stripped away by fanatics who think they know the solution to a problem when they don't........

        April 11, 2011 at 10:29 am |
      • spikette

the reason was the increase in sex slaves do to the high demand and low supply. they did not have enough women willing to sell their body for male use, so criminals brought women and children in to be used by men for high demand. THAT is rape. also.

      • YouKnow

You can play dumb all you want. But the rest of us know and undeniable so that animals start mating after they've clearly reached adulthood. Adult male animals don't mate with adolescent or teenage versions of adult females like perverted child-molesters. When a human girl is 8, 11, 15, 17 years of age, it's clear she's not reached adulthood in height, weight, hormone production, brain development, maturity, etc. Furthermore, animals care for their offspring more than perverted, child-molesters. Adult male animals want strong adult females to raise his children. Child-molesters don't even care for the children of the children they sleep with. All they care about is an erection and so on and are willing to rob the innocence of children to do it. They are willing to sacrifice their offspring to the care of an incapable child. Same thing with homosexuality. Other than a strange dog or two we've all seen during our long life-spans, male animals don't sleep with male animals. Oh, and most girls do not start their cycle at 8 years old, not sure where you got that one from. Lies to save face are invalid. Tag.

But the man shouldnt either if its done under consent in a proper manner. If its rape god only knows what, yes the man should be arrested and jailed. The background of the girl should be taken into consideration whether she be a dug addict...if so then she should be helped not jailed. Perhaps she sends money home to her poor family. Either way if she is 18 she has every right to consent to paid sex...if thats what she wants.......these so called dumb arse celebritys...why dont you get a life and find a better cause to throw your money and time on...

On what planet can supporting such an endeavour be a bad thing? Of course there are other problems in the world that need addressing but that in no way diminshes the value of these efforts.

To argue, as many people here have, that this endeavour should not be supported because there are other causes that should be supported first, or because there is argument about the cause of the issues, des not change the fact that this IS an issue and it SHOULD be addressed!

If the energy applied to arguing the details and techicalities were applied to the issue itself, then much good could be done!

Here is a very simple equation: Do you believe that child sex and slavery is right... I.e. Would you participate and "purchase" a child for your own satsfaction?

It is as simple as "yes" or "no" people! If you answer yes, seek help... you have a problem and are exactly the sort of person this campaign is aimed at.

If you answer no, then get behind this and support it! Stop being precious about whether it addresses the entire issue. Every step, any step, in the right direction makes a difference!

I commend DNA and all those public figures who have chosen to support this issue and I wish them every success. Succeeding here benefits them personally not a jot... but it may make a lifetime of difference for many young people!

It would be nice if it was just a matter of economics. But this is dealing with what a man's sexual impulsions are. If a guy is driven my his impulses to seek out little girls, that is what he will do. Whether it's a trip to the Phillipines, or stalking the local playground. Telling him "you're not a real man" is probably not going to deter these people, sexual imprints are pretty much hard wired once they are set in place. Try telling a gay man he's not a real man, for instance. Not gonna work. Is it a sick world? Yep. And no campaign is gonna change that. Still, nice to see Demi and Ashton in the news again. I missed them.

Our thanks go to all those speaking out against human trafficking. Demi and Ashton and everyone deserve our praise, not rude comments. There is no justification for slavery. It continues in an atmosphere of greed, laziness, lust -not love-, domination and disregard for our fellow human beings. It exists to keep the wheels of commerce turning. It struck fear into the hearts of the hidden hungry slave families when the unknowing public didn't buy enough product they made to pay the keeper to keep them. Would he close the trap and not return? Slaves were sometimes cheaper to restock than feed. Later new ones cleaned the trap and got motivated to work harder than those who were there before them....How's about you blow mouths try to stop the atrocities just described?

The thirteenth amendment, I want to say 1860-something. But that only referred to legalized slavery. Illegal slavery continues today, and slaves are cheaper and more disposable than ever.

Bravo for taking on this issue. There are WAY too many sicko's out there hiding behind their keyboards. Predators need to be shunned by normal people. Anyone who thinks "she looked older" is an excuse need to be introduced to the inside of a jail cell. These young people - girls and boys, yes boys - need to be PROTECTED and RESPECTED by adults.

Because it's sick, emotionally and physically destructive, oppressive, exploitative, causes dangerous pregnancies, spreads fatal diseases and it's illegal. Just for starters.

That's because these "hot girls" are CHILDREN. They are not consenting adults. Even those who are close to legal adulthood (16, 17, etc.) are still legally children. And most of them are NOT voluntarily selling themselves; they're doing this because they are desperate or afraid – trying to earn enough to eat that night, trying to pay for a drug habit, or trying to make enough money for the day so their pimp won't beat them up again. They don't have the maturity to make rational decisions in these cases, and there are always those who will take advantage of it. I have no problem with a woman (an ADULT) giving or selling her body if that's what she wants to do and she is not being coerced in any way. But forcing a child into that position (no pun intended) is WRONG.

It may be that Islam is the source from which the poster derives his or her moral compass. Being a Muslim may be relevant in the same way being a Christian would be–e.g. I know right from wrong or good from evil in part through the guidance of my faith, and this is against everything I stand for.

I am totally against anything that is forced upon people against there will and I wish this could be stopped.
One thing I do have to point out that is off topic and to do with prostituion. Although I have never indulged in the sex industy IE having to buy sex, 95% of the people out there arent as wealthy/goodlooking etc as your celebs who can potentially get any partner they want. So a lot of people/ men who don't have much to offer to the opposite sex would indulge in the sex industry and that's all good aslong as it's something thats not forced.

Since when are wealth/good looks the only standard for attracting mates? There's an entire world of people respecting others and enjoying love/relationship/marriage. Indulging in Prostitution doesn't help anyone attract real affection!
Besides, the age of these slavery victims is 5 , or any age. This thread has mentioned 11-17, but children are the ones who have been tortured by this. Anyone who throws up their hands about this, or doesn't care is guilty of promoting it. If some scum kidnapped your child and did this to them-you'd want more than imprisonment to be his punishment!

It will stop some. "John Schools" and similar methods can be successful, because frequently the people who are paying for sex don't know that the woman (or child whom the buyer is choosing to perceive as an adult) is in fact a slave. What I have learned from the people who teach at these schools is that some people you will never help, they will go out and do it again–but others are horrified, and had no idea, and it can make a difference.

Sounds like they're offering other ways to help (for those who would not even dream of paying for sex, let alone paying for sex with young children) – for example flagging online ads that appear to be offering minor prostitution. There will always be some pervs in the world, but anything we can do to help save some of the children, is for the better

I think some posters here didn't quite grasp that Ashton and Demi's campaign is targeting people who buy CHILDREN for sex–not the issue of whether or not adult women should be able to work as prostitutes However we feel about legalizing prostitution, we all hopefully agree that selling minors to sexual abusers is wrong.

I do kind of wish the slogan had been "Real Men Don't Buy Kids/Children" or something along those lines, as underage boys are victims of sexual trafficking too, more so than many realize and with comparatively less attention given to their plight.

I'm sorry, but the spot shown to me doesn't seem very effective. Do the producers really think that the men and women who purchase, rent or otherwise arrange underage children are going to be dissuaded by Justin Timberlake with a chainsaw?

I would also take the campaign more seriously if they could actually write in the language correctly. The second slate read, "CNN's Freedom Project is highlighting their work in curtailing the demand for child forced into prostitution."

Years ago in the mid-70s I was an 19yr old sailor on a submarine that had pulled into Subic Bay Naval Station in the Phillipines. I went on liberty with a friend and I had barely left the base, walked across a bridge, and was confronted by a middle-aged Filipino woman offering me the services of a 12yr old girl who was standing behind her. The girl was smiling and was certainly willing from all appearances. I was far from perfect, but I had my principles, and this situation was clearly outside of mine. It is reprehensible that any man would engage in sexual relations with an underage female. Having said that, these girls are most often the victims of their own culture which is rampant with corruption and collusion. The villains are as often as not the social workers, policeman, and even members of their own family that sell them for profit.

I know of slavery problems in Times Square, in the DC-Baltimore Corridor, in Atlanta, San Francisco, Mexico, Canada, Germany, Russia, Moldova, Albania, and dozens of other countries. But there are also people who try to stop it, and some incredible stories from the people who survive it and go on to help others still enslaved. Look up the Polaris Project or other anti-slavery NGOs for more info.

I would like to see a similar or a "Real Men Don't Sell Girls" campaign promoted by rappers and others who generally have been idealizing "pimpin'" and keeping girls as prostitutes. We need a cultural change on a larger scale. Even the language has to change: when "ho" is more or less synonymous with "girl", how could we expect anything except a depreciation of women overall?

And you know what, that sends a message to the entire planet about who we are as a nation, as a people.

Oh yeah, one other thing, it degrades and actually hurts those women. Yes, I know he pays them. But do you think they will ever be comfortable going back to their high school friends. (Even their actual friends...)

The muslims make terrible mistakes, that's true - and sorry, I look at our country and see that it's not much better.

girls and women need to be educated that their role as being female does not make the to be public toilets for men. The gender mind set in the world now is disgusting and I think those ED pills have a lot to do with it. I would not be surprised it they tested public water supplies for ED drugs we would be amazed how much of it is in there that we all consume . including women and children without knowing it.

That fact that you liken male sexuality to defecation gives way to the fact you have deep rooted problems.
The fact that you want to determine what an adult woman can do with her own body, and consider any one that does a 'toilet'....speaks volumes.

I hope they have a name, and treatment, for your type of issues.

I agree. Some "men" think they can just use women and children - then they throw them away, like used tissue. Sex is the act of procreation - the fusing of two human bodies - it's supposed to be intimate, the most intimate bond besides the bond of mother and child, where the child actually comes from the mother's body. It's not about "getting your pipes cleaned" or "getting some" or any of the other heartless, ugly euphemisms men say for using and discarding a human being. The men who do this have lost sight of their own humanity, their own power to be a lover, protector and family member with their mate.

You don't seem to understand so I will explain it to you. When rappers refer to women in a derogatory way, the women they are referring to are the women who want to be with them because of who they are. Tupac talked about it before. It was something along the lines of this. When he was a nobody a lot of women wouldn't look at him twice but the week after his first big album hit and women recognized him they all flocked to him. Those are the women they talk about. The ones who want to be with them because they have money and fame.

I was walking in a mall on Easter weekend one year, and a record store had their doors propped open. As the passing grandmothers and grandfathers, parents and little kids, teens and everyone passed the rapper shouted over the speakers, "So I shoved my fist up her (insert derogatory word for female body part here)." That was the day I lost 100% of my respect for rap and rappers. Every man involved should be disgusted by that kind of talk, but they glorify it instead. Sick doesn't even come close.

        April 11, 2011 at 12:26 pm |
      • JeanV

Oook - it's not one man, it's the entire genre, the sub-culture. They glorify the sexual abuse of women as a group. That doesn't mean that an occasional individual or an occasional song doesn't have something to say that's valuable. But when 98% of the sub-culture and genre are silent, accepting, even laughing and applauding and supporting the worst kind of misogyny? Then yeah, I'm going to call them out for it. I lived in Paris for most of a year. I was alone and not comfortable going out in my neighborhood at night. I watched a lot of French TV that year, and at night French TV will broadcast things that would be considered too pornographic in the U.S. Flipping channels in Paris, I came across some of the most vile music videos by rappers - it was glorifying the most horrific attitudes towards women. I don't care if rappers think they're only putting down certain kinds of women, they NEVER show any other kind of woman in these music videos. It's all ho-ho-ho-ho-ho. News flash, you will be judged by the company you keep, by your choice of words, by how you treat the people around you. Behave like a disgusting misogynist and you will be thought of as a disgusting misogynist. And yes, that goes for the exploitative glam rockers, too.

        April 11, 2011 at 1:47 pm |

What sexual abuse does rap or rock champion? Talking about sleeping with consenting adults is not sexual abuse. I have never heard a rap or rock song say child sex is a good thing. The rap song you were talking about glorifying a horrific attitude towards women, how many women were in the video. Chances are there were a lot of women. So its ok for these women to be in the videos helping the song become popular by with skimpy clothing dancing but then men who sing/rap are wrong?

In the late 70?s I was a sex slave for a very short time, and I was taken to Holland to work in a bar, by a guy I thought loved me, It is very easy to finish sex slavery, go to all these bars with girls in Belgium, Holland, Germany etc and arrest the girls to protect them and find out who their pimp is.
All these girls in all those bars have pimps who they give the money they make to, or better still, just Close the bars down. But that will not happen would it???

If you had any idea how much some high class prostitutes make then a woman might re think her career. So you're suggesting that sex shouldn't be part of a relationship? What an absurd idea. How many people in relationships have sex free ones and have fulfilling relationship?

Prostitution and sex slavery seems to have been somehow co joined due to the lack of knowledge about either from most media. Not every woman working as a prostitute is there against her own free will...Human trafficking is an abomination against civilisation however to label every prostitute as harmful to society is wrong and misleading.

And what about single men? Should they be deprived of their right to enjoy sex? How many lonely men are there in the world who don't have the choice? Those who are not physically attractive or those who are disabled. You have somehow managed to state that all prostitution is bad. When you couldn't be further from the truth

out of all the strippers and prostitutes i know, i have yet to find a rich one, or educated one. we are always told about how rich they are, yet the ones i know cannot pay their electrical bill, firstly.

you are the one suggesting that men have to pay for it one way or another, that there cannot be a simple relationship of two people enjoying each other. i am merely saying, that in todays economy there are more women making more money and fathers are staying home. so, does that mean that the women are now paying for s*x? it is a male whine to hear some men say they are paying for it one way or another.

women, too, are s*xual beings. i am not seeing your concern for the ugly women or handicapped women not getting s*x.

And indeed ugly and less attractive women have as much right to purchase the services of a male prostitute. And should they be degraded and criminalised for it? According to you ALL men are creepy if they purchase sex. But reverse the situation and if a woman does it. She would be lauded or pitied.

Funny I read a report about what some prostitutes make, There are some who make 150,000 USD per year. Of course they were the top shelf. Its like the pecking order in other areas of life.....

ya, i see it as creepy to buy a body to use at will.. i dont make a call on the legalizing or criminalizing. i do argue opinions given that are untrue. if you are going to argue legalization, know that it creates more problems than criminalized. if that is the choice a nation makes, so be it. but to pretend legalization will create a "pretty women" scenario, is wrong.

        April 11, 2011 at 11:31 am |
      • Phil

I think you would find that research has shown that legalisation of prostitution has done more good than harm. But child and human slave trafficking is a completely separate issue......You talk about the act of an adult male paying for the sexual services of an adult consenting female as if it should be criminalised. I gave the example of Sweden(where I sometimes reside) as not being successful. As it shifts whatever problems occur to another area...... an area which creates more problems than it solves....I too know strippers and escorts who earn a very large amount of money. And they are quite happy to ply their trade without interference from ill advised authorities or people who just have no clue....

        April 11, 2011 at 11:40 am |

and you seem to have a vested interest phil. i do not. i can continue to repeat, google... is your friend. EVERY country that has legalized ahs had a significant increase in sex slave. valid reasons. cops cant get into the areas. the demand is high. not enough women willing to sell themselves. they have to force others, women, children of both gender to meet the demand. EVERY country that has legalized are now looking at ways to solved the increase criminal acts.

        April 11, 2011 at 11:49 am |

You would have to interview every prostitute to see whether or not to see if she is doing it against her will...... Good luck. To criminalise it makes you Sweden.... Where you have absolutely no privacy whatsoever........Wanna see a modern version of the KGB, then head straight to Sweden.....

Buying GIRLS is illegal everywhere in Europe and in the U.S.A. The campaign is about men buying underage girls to sexually use and abuse. No 10 or 11 or 12 year old wants to have sex with creepy, filthy, abusive older men. If they are being forced to do so, that is human trafficking, sexual slavery. It destroys their lives, exposes them to the extreme dangers of physical damage (fistulas), dangerously early pregnancies, fatal sexually transmitted diseases, permanent psychological damage, etc. It's EVIL and this campaign is about pointing out that men who are not EVIL don't buy girls. You seem to have a lot of trouble understanding this.

I'm glad someone is taking action. However, Kutcher says, "As you reduce the demand that raises the price." This is not likely to be true. If you reduce the demand, this will cause the price to DECREASE! When demand is decreased, this leaves excess supply and people more willing to sell themselves for less! It is very unlikely that this will erase the business all together like Kutcher claims.

If you increase the price it will decrease demand. However, as demand decreases prices will fall. We need to come up with another way to end this problem.

Yes, Reducing demand lowers the price–which decreases the incentive to produce a supply, which lowers profit margins and makes it likely that fewer slaves will be trafficked in to satisfy demand.

Statistics are manufactured to make it look like a problem, because what they are really targeting is prostition. This is a moral crusade to stop adult prostitution. We should stop these moral crusades. Learn from the war on drugs, and leave people alone!

There is practically no demand for child sex, anywhere in the world. There is a demand for teenage sex. But that is completely different, because teenagers are not children. There is a constant effort to stop prostitution of any kind by constantly referring to older and older people as children. For example, there is an effort to raise the age of consent to 21. I wouldn't be surprised if they try to make illegal any sex outside of marriage. This whole effort has nothing to do with children.

Technically speaking, if someone hits puberty they are capable of sex.

        pu·ber·ty (pybr-t)
The stage of adolescence in which an individual becomes physiologically capable of sexual reproduction.

        puberty [ˈpjuːbətɪ]
(Life Sciences & Allied Applications / Biology) the period at the beginning of adolescence when the sex glands become functional and the secondary sexual characteristics emerge Also called pubescence Related adj

I'm not saying that a 10 year old who has hit puberty is able to consent to sex tho.

        April 11, 2011 at 11:54 am |
    • spikette

a 5 year old is capable. you mean capable of preg. but that was not the question. i have heard a group of males claim, at puberty, free game. you say we make our adults as children, ergo it is really not child s*x slaves. we are talking 10, 11, 12, 13. is that adult to you? free game? per your argument.

Whatever you said makes no sense but whatever. Biologically they are capable of reproduction which is a key purpose of sex. I said I wasn't saying they are able to consent but their bodies hitting puberty means NATURE is saying they are.

oook, that really has nothing to do with anything we are talking about. so what? at 5 they can have sex. we dont say ok to the 5 yr old. if you think the reason people are hving s*x is to have babes, well.... a lot of recreational going on, too. but none of that matters. poster said that we have adults classified as women. i wanted to know if poster is a believer that once puberty, free game. i hear that from men. i wanted clarification.

Spikette – that's exactly what some (sick) men claim. There's the whole gamut from the ones who think it's OK at 8 to the ones who think it's OK at 16. They just want to use and discard human beings as fantasy sex "objects" without having to even try to care about the human being they're using. If she's a terrified run-away being beaten by a pimp? They don't care. If she's an 11-year-old being kept on drugs by a filthy brothel? They don't care. They only care about getting their mack on. They're disgusting, emotionally stunted human beings who need some hard time in jail to teach them to STOP using and abusing young, vulnerable people. And no, I'm not talking about a Romeo and Juliet situation between kids. I'm talking about "men" using youngsters as disposable sex "toys". They're HUMAN BEINGS. Not things.

Slavery remains a very real and significant problem. People are not manufacturing statistics, although you do get a wide range of them because definitions of slavery change and it is difficult to get an accurate picture of a criminal phenomenon. I suggest you talk to a cop who has dealt with human trafficking, or with one of the NGOs that counsels survivors. I know of one place busted a half dozen blocks from me.

      April 11, 2011 at 12:40 pm | Reply
      • Vince

I know how the statistics are produced. I am an ex-cop. Everytime we busted a 16 year old for prostitution, it was listed as a slavery case because she was under age. And overwhelming majority of these cases are teenage prostitution cases. Slavery is extremely rare, and it is a very serious crime. Now, there is a reason why people distort these statistics, because they want to end prostitution. But they should be honest about it. Some of us want the prostitution to be completely legal. But it is impossible to have a serious debate when one side constantly distorts the issue.

Age is a separate issue which also requires debate. There are no 8 year old prostitutes, at least not in this country. And no 8 year olds who are consenting to sex with anybody. So, another red herring. Another attempt to shut off the debate. The age of consent in Canada is 14. There is no rash of child prostitution in Canada because of it. Theyb don't even have more teenage sex that we do. making everything crime only creates a police state. It doesn't solve any problems, especially when you don't have a problem to start with.

Vince-why aren't you a policeman anymore? You've seen prostitution and you think it's a good thing that would benefit humanity? Perhaps youve seen too much and have given up on all people-even the good ones.

        April 11, 2011 at 11:45 am |
      • JeanV

It doesn't work that way, Tina. What happens is that the legal brothels enable and hide the child sex trafficking. The man who wants the kids goes to the brothel, whispers a few words to the owner, money exchanges hands, and a number is passed off to him, or he's shown to a back room - the corrupt people who run brothels get to hang out a shingle, so to speak. It facilitates the child traffickers and underage traffickers.

        April 11, 2011 at 12:43 pm |
    • spikette

there are also common sense repercussions tina that you do not think about. that many countries did not think about before legalizing, but have since learned. with legalization the demand increases. there are not enough women willing to prostitute themselves. pimps then have to import and enslave women and children of both gender to fill demand. cops cannot get a hold on it because the legalization has tied their hands. do you really think the criminal element is going ot lose their bread and butter because it was legalized?

Thank you for taking a stand on this.

This isn't about adults making choices about their sex lives, this is about child abuse.

Horrific child abuse – the child suffers physical trauma, emotional and verbal abuse. Then, the child is ostracized by society – often including her family, her friends. Then, if the child tries to escape, or is unlucky, she also gets arrested, marked for life as a criminal in every job interview. All this damage can last for a lifetime and it is very difficult to dig yourself out of this life – you'll be haunted by STDs, potentially sterile, rape trauma (PTSD is a common side effect), a criminal record, and no support system. Tack on a drug addiction, a common method to "control" these slaves, and it's a wonder anyone ever makes it out of prostitution at all.

I agree with the objective and appreciate their efforts. But Ashton is not an economist. If you reduce demand then the price goes down as the sellers are now competing for a fewer number of buyers. If the price of gasoline goes up the demand for large vehicles goes down. The car lots have to reduce the price of gas guzzlers to sell them. I agree reducing demand is a good thing but that won't make the price go up. Reducing supply causes the price to go up. Since Libia has reduced production of oil supply is down and prices are up.

Not true. There is a cost-benefit ratio at work. If a child prostitute was as rare as hen's teeth, the price would skyrocket, further reducing demand. The way to break the cost-benefit ratio is to prosecute the heck out of johns and pimps and madams. Lock them up, confiscate their money and property, put their name on a public, searchable website. Most of the "tourists" in this trade (not the most hardened pedophiles) would stop participating if they knew that conviction would be tied to their face and name on a "facebook of child sex abusers" for life. It would become vanishingly rare and very, very expensive - nearly impossible to find - saving millions of children (girls and boys) from becoming victims.

A true demonstration of love:” This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for each other.” (1 John 3:16)
Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. (1 John 4:7-8)
If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. 1 Corinthians 13:3-7
Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them. 1 John 2:9-11
Love one another with brotherly affection [as members of one family], giving precedence and showing honor to one another. Romans 12: 10

Little children, let us not love in theory or in speech but in deed and in truth (in practice and in sincerity). 1 John 3: 18

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is (springs) from God; and he who loves [his fellowmen] is begotten (born) of God and is coming [progressively] to know and understand God [to perceive and recognize and get a better and clearer knowledge of Him]. 1 John 4: 7
He who does not love has not become acquainted with God, for God is love.
    1 John 4: 8
But God shows and clearly proves His [own] love for us by the fact that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5: 8

I think their hearts are in the right place by focusing on the demand. This will increase awareness but not sure how far it will go in actually decreasing demand. There are alot of sick pups out there that are only too happy to take advantage of a child, and this campaign I'm afraid is going to do nothing to discourage them. But overall, I do think it is a good thing, and I hope it makes a differance in some children's lives.

It could be as simple as this. I go to a bar and approach an attractive woman. I buy her a few drinks and maybe something to eat. While I do all this my goal is to hopefully have sex with her. In a way I am buying sex.

        April 11, 2011 at 3:00 pm |
      • spikette

wrong. you are buying her a drink. if she is not a participant of this contractual interaction, she is not agree to $ or drink in exchange for s*x, she is in no way being "bought" by you purchasing her a drink. later, she might suggest or agree to s*x, but that has nothing to do with money changing hands or being bought. some of you men really have to get beyond the thought of paying for dinner is paying for s*x. it is merely paying for dinner.

        April 11, 2011 at 3:23 pm |
      • oook

And when you buy a prostitute you are paying for her "time" and whatever you decide to do is between two consenting adults. However you want to spin it its still the same thing. You really think some random guy in a bar cares if you want another beer or dinner? Chances are no. How often do you go somewhere and buy something for someone else and not expect something in exchange? I'm going to guess not often.

        April 11, 2011 at 4:19 pm |
      • oook

My point wasn't to say she is agreeing to sex in exchange for a drink or dinner. My point is you pay for it one way or another. Cash or dinner.

        April 11, 2011 at 4:26 pm |
      • spikette

again, wrong. if you are buying her a drink, that is all you are doing, you are not buying s*x. it is that simple. if you have s*x and no money has exchanged hands, you are not buying s*x. BUT i refused to go out with a man unless we went dutch, or i paid for part of the evening so men like you did not paint me as a wh*re being "bought" because i may want s*x with them. and every man fought me on it. wanted a date, i paid my share. it is men like you, who equate a date to woman being a wh*re that is the problem.

      • For the Children

Oook- it's not "as simple as this" buying dinner you keep going on about. It's much darker and more horrific than hooking up with someone in a bar. being held captive-abused, tortured, starved and forced to be raped by multiple sickos every day is torturous and a disgusting crime to humanity. The fact that the victims are children make it even more nauseating. Children who can't protect themselves or escape. Their life is nothing like the woman you met in the bar.
You wouldn't last a day in their reality- you are clearly too bent on satisfying your own desires. Imagine not even eating for 3 days. I bet you couldn't.

When when people face the facts. $ex is a basic human need. Not everyone is a famous actor who has women throwing themselves at them. Some people won't get any unless they pay for it .Legalize and regulate prostitution. Increase the legal penalties for those who don't register. That will protect everyone involved. It will prevent children from being drawn in.

Maybe that alone doesn't but if you drastically increase the penalties for those who don't comply it has a lot better chance than what's being done now which obviously isn't working. What do you think the answer is? Please enlighten me.

Some policies effectively combat it. In Cambodia, for example, the publicity it has gotten has made it much less acceptable. Additionally, police training can make it easier to get victims help, rather than revictimizing them. "John schools" for first-time solicitation offenders can also be successful. There are lots of things we can do to help prevent human trafficking from occurring and to mitigate some of the negative effects.

Bruce Rubin said: "America was built on Human exploitation. First it was slaves, now we outsourced it to third world countries."

You need to brush up on economic history, Mr. Rubin. Slaves were rarely used in the industrial north prior to 1850 and virtually never after that, and that is where America's early economic strength came from. Slaves only made economic sense in the South's agricultural fields, which did little to build America - and slaves haven't been used in this country (outside the sex trade, apparently) for 150 years. As for your assertion that overseas outsourcing is somehow building American economic power...there isn't an economist on the planet who would agree with that. It is, in fact, tearing away at the American economy.

A girl who has reached menarche in no longer a girl; she is a young woman. That she is called 'underage' is a legal fiction created to prevent older women from having to compete with the younger ones for husbands. She is mature enough to bring forth children; nature names her 'of age.' Our culture forbids her participation in the biology of our kind because young men and women of that age cannot compete for jobs with which to support a family. So we tell them to wait for 6 or 8 years to realize their biological potential... then castigate them when they do not... so let's not confuse the 'Slavery' issue with the 'underage' issue... teach your daughters (and sons) how to avoid becoming enslaved by those who would use them, then throw them away...

You're about as well-educated on this point as a gnat. Look at the rate of maternal mortality, infant mortality and genetic defects. Too-young mothering is incredibly high-risk and dangerous to mother and child. Her pelvis is too small. Her eggs aren't mature enough. She is neither mentally nor emotionally prepared for the rigors of pregnancy, childbirth or child rearing. This has nothing to do with competing with older women (a common myth put forward by disgusting perverts) and everything to do with protecting underage, underdeveloped young girls from human PREDATORS who prefer to prey on girls that are too small, weak, shy and powerless to effectively fight them off.

Shaving with a chainsaw, and even the slogan "real men don't buy girls", come on. I wish they could have been a little more serious as Sex trafficing is anything but funny. 2nd, Why have Eva Longoria at the end? She is standing there in tight leather pants and in a sexy voice says "Pierce Morgan is a real man, are you" the last thing they should promote when talking about sex trafficing is sex. 3rd, Mr. Kutcher you are right in saying raising the price lowers demand, but saying lowering demand raises the price is false. Lowering the demand actually lowers the price. Obviously this is silly to point out as i don't really want to haggle over the economics of sex trading, i'm just saying his statement is false. Again, props to everyone giving thier time to this, i just think they are going about it in a very different way then i would have.

The root cause of this problem is personal desire. People make movies, videos, etc to fill a demand; someone desires to look at that. I don’t care how many movies I see that exploit and feature young girls I don’t desire that and it doesn’t make me desire that. We have to get to the root cause of the problem “A persons need to control another, to feel above or better than another, self esteem!” That is evident on these posts about who is an immigrant and who is not. We are all citizens of this planet called Earth. We have to stop with the “I am better than you!” We have to start with empowering and educating these girls all over this world. It is a tragedy that in this day and age women and children are still second class citizens everywhere and that men still feel their self esteem threatened by this. When we change that with education and enlightenment we change everything.

"Sex trafficking is an elastic trade. If you can raise the price for sex you can actually reduce the demand. As you reduce the demand that raises the price."
Really? If you raise the price, you lower the demand...and if you reduce the demand it raises the price? What sense does that make? Basic economics would state that raising demand raises price, and lowering demand lowers price. This guy, who doesn't know about basic economics....He's going to be in charge of a campaign to end something that has gone on since the beginning of mankind? Something so intricately deep and woven into every society (some more than others), something that needs to be taken seriously and with a lot of force....
He is making a mockery out of THE evil of the world. If he was serious about this, he wouldn't get himself involved except to donate funds and use his money to influence those who do take it seriously.
Ashton and Demi make me sick.

Sex slavery should be legalized. There are too many people living on earth. Put at least some of them to some use. Earth has not enough space for 7 billion of free people. With such a high population density, the majority need to be slaves.
In overpopulated societies th majority will necessarily live in misery, if you call it slavery or not. Having a low-paid job that only permits to eat and sleep and pay off debts is not much different from slavery. So why not legalizing slavery right away? Particularly sex slavery would make life much more enjoyable for many of us.

It's important that the message of child sex slavery gets out. My problem is that the title's focus... "Real Men Don't Buy Girls" is naive and misdirected. While a nice sentiment, one might as well start asking drug cartels to reconsider the errors of their ways. By the time men start buying children for sex, I doubt they're much concerned about their own consciences or others' opinions of their masculinity... to say nothing of Justin Timerberlake's or Demi Moore's. I'd say the title's focus should be about strengthening existing laws and law enforcement resources, perhaps something more along the line of, "Real Men Don't Get Put Away For 120 Years in a Supermax."

His screwed up economic theory aside, who here would stand idly by if they saw children being sold as sex slaves? And do we really need Ashton Cucher's help help bringing awareness? I don't think it is the norm in society to go out and buy sex like you go out and have a beer, and oh if you happen to get served this brand, do not drink it because that company exploits its workers. "Let's boycott buying underage sex workers" is not really an inspiring slogan.

It should be called "Real Men Don't Buy Kids" because boys fall prey to this victimization, as well.

Ashton Kutcher is an idiot, I mean the cause is good, but his logic is flawed. If you decrease the demand, the price will drop to compensate for lack of demand. Like floppy disks, they're almost free. Ask any economist, his first part is right, increase the price and demand will fall, but decrease demand and the prices will go down.

I think that this article is somewhat of a double standard. It talks of 'real men' not buying sex from girls, which I believe is a great thing, but that's part of the problem; it only talks of men. If Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore both campaign for this cause, shouldn't it be that not only 'real men' but 'real women' don't support the sex slave ring? It it not only girls or women that are victims to sex slavery, there is also boys and men who are forced into it as well. I think that what they are doing is a great cause, really, this is still a very large problem for society and the criminal justice system, but a campaign shouldn't appear to exclude women from supporting the cause, or men from being victims.

I do think the problem is rooted in the presentation of women as sexual objects. The sons of men are greatly captivated by what they see.

The above is NOT an attempt to justify child sex abuse BUT a direction to the root cause, calling attention to it so as to curb this culture.
As to the Hollywood couple who attempt to fight this culture, I'm on the line of reasoning that they fuel the engine that runs the machine of child sexual abuse for they propagate the mind-set of perceiving women as sex objects, a la sex idols.

Only God Almighty would eventually rid us of this culture, why, Satan is at the helm, the wicked one dominates the affairs of these times. Until he is ousted, it'll remain. But God is soon to do away with him.

I don't agree with anyone being forced to be a sex slave but what I don't understand why people are blaming certain people. Hollywood gets the blame, instead of blaming the women who star in the movies. Nickelodeon gets blamed but no one mentions the parents of these 14 year old girls that are allowed by their parents to dress and act the way they do. It's the men who are the ones at fault for some reason but you keep failing to see that women are just as much, if not more responsible. They are the ones staring in movies that are showing young girls its ok to wear makeup and dress a certain way. The rappers and rock stars are at fault for not respecting women when its women who help make them famous and allow them to talk negative about them. Are there women and children forced to do things they shouldn't have to?
YES, but not all women are victims.

Crazy concept here, but these slaves are being sold in range of prices between $0.50 and $100. Mr. Kutcher recently put his old "bachelor pad" on the market for $1.6 million more than he paid for it, assuming he truly is a humanitarian and not in it just for the publicity then I would say that it would be fair for him to keep $800K as profit on his investment and use the other $800,000 to buy the "freedom" of the people who claims to care so much about. Let's say at an average price of $50 he could afford to purchase freedom for 16,000 people. Though I bet he's got a nice car in mind instead, and the attention (what little there is) this "campaign" will generate.

This is a nice idea but it doesn't actually work. Yes that money saves people, but it also gives money to human traffickers who just go out and buy more people. There is simply to much of a supply of possible trafficking victims. Giving money to these people would only increase the problem.

The point is that most any problem you're faced with can be quashed with the good old dollar (no matter how much people like to say othersise). Spend $800,000 on the people, spend $400,000 on XE (Blackwater) to take care of the problem afterwards, we're in agreement that slavers are scum, so stop the problem at the source. Private money and interest can do a whole lot if these celebutantes acknoledged their status in society and used it to better the world and only get 1 Koenigsegg instead of 2.

I was a Ward of the State of TX at the age of 15. I had an eighth grade education, at the time. I was forced into prostitution by a pimp who pretended to work as a bail bondman and who was also in cahoots with Dallas police officers.

The "Johns" don't care about the victims plight at all. I can't recall how many "Johns" I pleaded to help me get away from my kidnappers.

Unless you've experienced this situation you really can't really know the horrible-ness of the experience. The victimizers justify their actions in trafficking and violence and abuse by blaming the victim and telling her that she "asked for it."

It's all so sick and un-necessary. If the victims really wanted the abuse then why have the kidnapping, threatening, and forced slavery system in place. Why the secrecy? Why all the hiding?

And, as far as I'm concerned, the "general public" is just as sick. They also blame the victim. They stigmatize the victim with the word prostitution - when it's really torture, POW style torture, abduction, slavery, and de-humanizing behavior that is the greatest threat to freedom and liberty.

I'm so sorry to hear your plight. It takes a lot of courage to tell such a history. From what little research there is, it seems this is a very typical way that American girls are exploited in our own country, and within our own systems. You should consider working for some of the amazing groups that work to change laws in this country and/or groups that help girls and women get off the street. A lot of legal activists here in the US have been working for some years to convert to a system like Sweden where only the purchase of sex is a crime. It was criticized when it was put into place but has been a resounding sucess and model for other countries. It's had the effect of making it too dangerous for low life pimps and too humiliating for men who buy sex. In Sweden, people feel that real men don't buy sex at all and that anyone who sells it is likely in a vulnerable position, worthy of assistance – as you were. You have a compelling story and the ability to help change the world for the better as a result of your past pain. I wish all the best to you!

Good start, but why stop at children? Studies show women in this life usually started young, at the hands of a pimp. Sweden has nearly eliminated traffiking in people of all ages by decriminalizing people who sell sex and only criminalizing people who buy it. They said it would never work, but it's been a smashing sucess. In Sweden, the social attitude is that Real Men don't buy sex at all.

"If you can raise the price for sex you can actually reduce the demand. As you reduce the demand that raises the price."

Careful here, Kutcher. The difference between "demand" and "quantity demanded" may seem indistingushable to a layman, but in this case the difference becomes crucial, as you will se. You mean that if you raise the price, quantity demanded is reduced. (Fewer will buy at that higher price.) That is correct. Then you turn cause and effect around. Your statement seems logical but isn't, and the reason is your confusion between "demand" and "quantity demanded".

You really meant "quantity demanded" in your first sentence since "demand" in the sense used by economists (and as being different from "quantity demanded") cannot be changed by a change in price. On the other hand, you cannot possibly mean "quantity demanded" in your second sentence because that makes no sense. You cannot reduce "quantity demanded" in any other way but through a change in the price. Thus, you cannot raise the price by reducing "quantity demanded" (because how are you going to then change "quantity demanded" if price is the effect,
and not the needed cause to accomplish that effect?).

The only possible interpretation of your second sentence is if you by "demand" really refer to "demand", and not "quantity demanded" (as in your first sentence). However, "demand" in an economic sense cannot be changed by raising the price, but, hey, let's pretend that would be possible. Unfortunately, you are running out of luck here: A reduced demand causes a LOWER price – not a higher price. The effect is the same with a layman's definition of "demand": If my house is for sale, and nobody wants to buy it (low demand), then I have to LOWER the price until
someone is willing to by it. My house is certainly not going to get more expensive if demand is reduced!

Good cause you are working for, but before you deliver any more statements of economics, make sure they are not both confusing and wrong at the same time! (It makes it such a pain to explain to you what's wrong with it...)

    The article states:
If you can raise the price for sex you can actually reduce the demand
    true, increased prices decreases demand.
    The article further states:
As you reduce the demand that raises the price
    false, lower demand reduces price.
    Finally, the article states:
the way to do that is by attacking the demand because the supply is endless
Well, if the supply is endless and past history has proven their is a demand, then attempting to raise the price to decrease demand is futile.
Please review your econ 101 notes.

"In the United States there are 100,000 to 300,000 American children between 11 and 14 who are vulnerable to being sold for sex every year, according to Shared Hope's 2009 National Report on Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking."

I'm sorry, but those numbers are bullshit. They're probably exaggerated by a factor of five to ten.

Those numbers are actually pretty low. You are Lucky to live in a part of society that does not see this much sex trafficking/child abuse. Just bc you don't see it does not mean it is not there. I was sold for sex in trade for drugs- everyone one of those men who had sex with me (starting at age 5 by the way) was just a 'regular joe' they looked normal, attended church, had families of their own. Open your eyes sir. There are many more of us victims than you can fathom

Very true. Last month, the Village Voice looked into the "100,000 to 300,000 child sex trafficking victims in the U.S." claim and learned that it was utter crap. The "study" was based upon completely bogus science. You can read it about here:

Not surprisingly, the people running many of these nonprofit child sex trafficking organizations are not career social workers or child psychologists or any other social advocates, but rather, their career fields are almost exclusively in – LOBBYING! Child sex trafficking seems to be the new moral panic. Look, I'm all for doing everything to eliminate sex trafficking, but deliberately hyping the problem using bogus statistical methodologies doesn't help the cause at all. It only hurts it by destroying your orhanization's credibility.

Um... this is a forum about Kutscher and Moore's effort to stop Child Sex Slavery...not a forum to proudly proclaim how proud you are to be a non immigrant.

I applaud the efforts of anybody to effectivly stop injustice. I am not a fan of either of these questionable actors, however, their lack of employment at the moment is being put to gut use. Mr. Kutscher sounds downright on the ball with his arguments: keep up the good work...it is effective and in the right direction.

Regarding the discussions of if and when Mr. Kutscher's economic ideas will or will not work, I remind everyone that just becasue something is hard to do, does not mean it should not be attempted. If there is less demand for the services, then less people will be interested in getting involved pimping children, becasue there is too much competition and not enough business... perhaps I failed eco 101..

The scariest thing about all these discussions is:

    1. How quickly the argument turns to a vanity issue of people discussing how good a non immigrant or American they are: HOW VAIN ARE WE?

    2. Most amazing is that I assume interested, relativly intelligent people are reading and contributing to this forum... and the volume of sceptism that is evident here is overwhelming... it makes me wonder how we as a society can agree to do anything important...

Why are so many people so bitter and hateful about this obviously happily married couple's relationship? Forty-three year old men marry women who are 27 all the time. Not a peep out of anyone about it. Reverse the gender and people act like she kidnapped him and held a gun to his head. They're both very attractive, successful ADULTS and they love each other. Why begrudge them their happiness? I'm not a big fan of their work, but that's no reason to hate them or be hateful towards them.

CNN, Kutcher & Demi, with woman also playing the role of kingpins in human trafficking for domestic slaves and sex trade, your campaign slogan of "Real men dont buy girls" definitely needs change to address both men and women as perpetrators & boys and girls as victims, which otherwise to a lay man (more to woman in this case) implies that men are the only perpetrators towards girls.
To quote Ashton saying to CNN "We want to create a cultural shift in the way men and women view young people selling themselves for sex".

My mother used to sell me or trade me for drugs starting when I was 5 (that's the first I can remember anyway). This lasted until she got cleaned up and off of drugs. I can tell you that all kinds of men 'buy' young girls to have sex with-what I mean is they look like normal, everyday men with families of their own. It's a mistake to think you would be able to tell by looking at some one if they are closet pedophiles or not. When this happens at such a young age you truly start to believe that it's normal for men to always want to have sex with you, even when you are crying and the women glare at you and call you names because you are a 'slut'. I will never forget the way one mans mother looked at me after she found out her 18 year old son had sex with me- I was barely 5 years old. She glared at me and he yelled at me for not keeping it 'our secret'. I still have the occasional nightmare but it's been over 35 years ago. So please, not only do we need to teach that 'real men don't buy girls' we need to teach women not to hate the victims.

I wonder how many of the folks here are underage themselves, considering the ridiculous comments like comparing Demi Moore's age and so on. There is an underlying fact here: The basic premise for relationships here is that if you are under 18, you cannot consent. Talking a 14 year-old does not mean she consents. It is rape. Same for boys. They cannot sign a contract either for the same reason. It requires a guardian.
Quit getting bogged down in the clumsy way the "supply and demand" argument was presented. Quit dragging up how old Mohammed's wife was (How old was Mary? Most estimated her as about 12). That was then, this is now. Sure, sex sells in commercials, but they should be consenting adults. At some point a person with some semblance of values should have alarm bells going off when they see a child, however cute, attractive, etc., being treated as an adult. This is not a particularly high bar for standards in society, but its a darn good start.

It never hit home until it happens to you. NO CHILD, TEENAGER, or WOMAN should be forced to be someone's commodity! PERIOD. And most prostitutes, (male and female) were abused as kids! Now this is a great initiative, but this is why movie stars need to stick with making movies and not dabble in economics.

    Here, for example:
"Sex trafficking is an elastic trade. If you can raise the price for sex you can actually reduce the demand. As you reduce the demand that raises the price."[That means] you can, ultimately, put it out of business, and the way to do that is by attacking the demand because the supply is endless."

The first part is true, though I am not sure how you magically "raise the price" of sex, market forces drive that, not a central sex bank.

If you reduce the demand on a good with the supply remaining equal, the price DROPS. Morever, if you increase the price of a good, even if the market shrinks, you encourage manufacturers (or in this case, pimps and prostitutes) to take advantage of that market. That would lead to more pimps and prostitutes in the market, not less (remember, there is a certain point at which people will sell themselves, remember that Winston Churchill joke?)

To put it out of business, you would have to, in effect, make prostitution so cheap that no one would sell their bodies, not make it so expensive that it would be unaffordable. That would remove the supply.

But wait, Ashton Kutcher tries to make sense here:

"First and foremost is do not participate, either you or your friends. If it's your friend then you say "I don't want to hang out with someone participating in that because you're hurting people."

Wait, nevermind, what he just proposed is going to lower to price of sex, and not raise it like he originally suggest.

Seriously, Hollywood, keep promoting these good causes. Just don't give your 2 cents, because they never make sense.

Since when does someone have to perfect in order to protect our children?? Well?
I have been a victim of child sex since the age of 5 and reading these comments just confirms to me that most people dont care what happens to others as long as it doesn't happen to them or THEIR family.

When u buy a gift for your partner I would like to think it's bc you love them and not bc you are thinking it is payment for sex. So, with this line of thinking when your girlfriend/wife buys you a present then it must be a 'penalty payment' for hooking up with a douche.

Many men confuse Love and Lust like you are doing. God's kind of Love is directed toward others not inward toward our selves. It is truly not selfish. Lust is only wanting to take care of our own sexual desires, money problems or because we are lonely and does not care about others. Yes we may do things for the person we lust after but that is because we want sex, money or friendship in return. That is being selfish.

I give gifts, take ladies to dinner etc because i enjoy their company, sharing interests and their friendship. I do the same with my close male friends. you are using your money, friendship etc. to buy sex nothing more. Be a real man with compassion, caring and love for others and stop being selfish.

You are correct about stop buying women women for sex. Here in Thailand and many other countries lets look at the real problem. There is no child support laws so husbands and boyfriends have children with their partners and leave home for another woman as the don't want the financial responsibility to take care of their offspring. This leaves the women to find enough money to take care of their children. Most of these girls are from poor rural areas so their parents can't help out. I have talked to several people running for government offices about having a child support law. The women running for office are interested but said they would loose an election if they even mentioned it. The men running for election would not even listen or talk to me about the subject, they just walked away or told me to leave. If there was a child support law 90% of the women in the sex trade in Thailand would be able to live in their villages, work their parents fields or a minimal paying job as they have only a limited education. Living here for more than 20 years I know for a fact dead beat dads is the reason for most of the sex trade in Thailand.

Well, finally someone who appears to know something about Thailand. The hystericals rants of 12 year old girls marketed on the streets is just BS and anyone who has been there knows that.

Thailand certainly has its political and cultural problems. Having a Thai wife, I know many Thai women, who are not prostittutes and never have been. Many are professional women with jobs and educations. They got there because they refrained from sex before marriage. Many Thai women are virgins on thier wedding day. That is no longer the case in America.

These sucessfull Thai women did not endulge in a counterculture of casual sex before marriage. Does that phrase sound familiar? Like a movie, starring Demi Moore, called "Casual Sex". This was one of her many steamy sexually charged movies from the 80s and 90s where Demi used her sex appeal to gain fame and popularity only to turn against men later with her hatred.

I have heard Demi Moore talk. She exploited her own sex appeal as a teenager to gain fame. Now she comes out in a hypocritical stance against it and with tremendous hatred against all men....the same people she appealed to as a teenager.

The arrests and conviction numbers just dont support the wild estimates state here. Where are the busts, arrests, and convictions. Reminds me of the Super Bowl deal where they warned of all this child exploitation at the Super Bowl. I did not hear of a single arrest or bust. Not one.

There needs to be a huge differentiation made between slavery, child abuse and prostitution. It is all well and good for people who earn more in one year than most of the world will earn in ten lifetimes to work to stop prostitution. How about the people whose choice, if they even can get it, is to work in a factory for 80 hours a week, with no breaks for meals or toilet for 100 bucks a month or work as a prostitute for which they can earn the same in a few hours? In Thailand, the most beautiful of the rural poor are sent by their families to the tourist areas to sell themselves, often so that the male children can get an education and provide for the family later. Yes, it is a terrible situation but the problem is not selling sex, it is a world where the privileged spend more on a meal out at Spago than a whole family in a third world country spends on food for month. If everyone who earns more than $1 million a year gave 10% of their accumulated wealth and 10% of their income for 10 years, every starving child in the world could be sponsored through established charities like Save the Children, World Vision, and Children Intl. With the current financial state of the people involved and their families, prostitution is often the only means to avoid destitution, squalor, misery and sometimes starvation.

Sure, real men who, although they have no real talent, get paid millions of dollars to act like twats and have women standing in line to share their celebrity. Everyone else either has to spend a fortune taking a woman out hoping for boring sex, or just eliminate the mind games and endless hassle, and pay one for good company, laughter and great fun. Like a wise man once said: I don't pay them for sex; I pay them to leave in the morning!" I know women in Nevada who make over a quarter of a million dollars a year. There needs to be a distinction made between fighting against prostitution and fighting against child slavery (perpetrators of which need to be publicly castrated, whipped and then imprisoned for life)

"Real men don't buy girls"... That's stupid. VERY few men – percentage wise – ever buy a human being (trafficking). That's like saying "real men don't murder". On the other hand, if it refers prostitution, then it is equally silly. Real men – just about every fertile, heterosexual man – "buy girls" all the time. Every time a man buys a diamond ring to a woman, or pays for their dinner out together, he buys access to that woman, whether it be half-way or all the way to bed. Women want to be bought, but they put it in different words. If this wasn't true, women wouldn't care so much about a man's income.

And if we are talking about ordinary prostitution, than I don't see anything not "real" about it as long as the man pays the agreed-upon price, and treats her with respect, dignity and care, whatever is realistic to the situation at hand. Today, lots of women too are buyers in prostitution, often in the Carribean or Africa, and I apply the same standards to them. They are also "real" (women). A service is a service, and as long as the seller isn't forced into it, then one must respect her or his choice to sell. Real men treat others with fairness and dignity, but they also don't bullshit around with terms like "real men", making moral judgments on adult people's consensual sexlife.
