iReporters take a stand to end slavery

Over the next several months, the CNN Freedom Project will shine a spotlight on the horrors of human trafficking, highlight some of the success stories and share ways that everyone can make a difference.

CNN iReport and GOOD are partnering on a series of creative challenges that you can do to raise awareness about this crisis. For the first assignment, we’ve invited people to share a photo of yourself holding a sign that says “I’m taking a stand to end slavery” or a video with the same message.

It may seem small, but it’s a first step to gather what we hope will be a huge group of people around the world, all committed to spreading the word about an issue of which most of the public is unaware. Together, we hope to make a big difference in future Freedom Project challenges.

So far, iReporters in nearly 20 countries have taken the pledge. As Salome Van Leuven of Farnham, England, eloquently put it, the problem “will not be resolved if no one is aware of it.” She added, “a good campaign will make people start talking.”

How about you? Will you take a stand to end slavery? Take the pledge so you can take part in future Freedom Project challenges.

According to the media hype There was supposed to be hundreds of thousands of under age child sex slaves kidnapped and forced to have sex with super bowl fans. At the Dallas Super Bowl 2011. WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL OF THEM????????????

Well, as I predicted it was all a big lie told by various anti-prostitution groups and the Dallas Women’s Foundation which is a anti-prostitution group that lies in order to get grant money from the government and charities to pay their high salaries. As proved in the link below:

Top FBI agent in Dallas (Robert Casey Jr.) sees no evidence of expected spike in child sex trafficking:

“Among those preparations was an initiative to prevent an expected rise in sex trafficking and child prostitution surrounding the Super Bowl. But Robert Casey Jr., special agent in charge of the FBI’s Dallas office, said he saw no evidence that the increase would happen, nor that it did.
“In my opinion, the Super Bowl does not create a spike in those crimes,” he said. “The discussion gets very vague and general. People mixed up child prostitution with the term human trafficking, which are different things, and then there is just plain old prostitution.”

    dallasnews.com/sports/super-bowl/local/20110302-top-fbi-agent-in-dallas-praises-super-bowl-security-effort-sees-no-evidence-of-expected-spike-in-child-sex-trafficking.ece

This myth of thousands or millions of underage sex slaves tries to make every sports fan a sex criminal. No matter what the sport is, or in what country it is in.

Brian McCarthy isn't happy. He's a spokesman for the NFL. Every year he's forced to hear why his customers are adulterers and child molesters. Brian McCarthy says the sport/super bowl sex slave story is a urban legend, with no truth at all.

I do not like the idea of people getting the wrong information and believing lies, no matter what the topic is. The Sex trafficking, slavery issue is one of the biggest lies being told today. It is amazing to me how people will believe such lies so easily. The media is to blame for this. I wonder why they feel such a need to report wrong stats, numbers and information about this topic without doing proper research.

While this may happen in very rare limited situations, the media will say that millions of people are sex slaves without doing any real research on the topic. Only taking the word of special interest anti-prostitution groups which need to generate money in the form of huge government grants from taxpayers, and charities. These "non profit" group's employees make huge salaries, therefore they need to lobby the government, and inflate and invent victims in order to get more money into their organizations. If you look into how many real kidnapped forced against their will sex slaves there are, and not just take the anti-prostitution groups word for it. You will be very surprised.
Where are all the forced sex slaves? I would like to meet the millions of slaves and see for myself if they were kidnapped and forced against their will.

These groups lobby the government in a big way, getting Politicians to truly believe their lies.

This is an attempt to over inflate an issue in order to get more government money to these organizations. As a tax payer, voter, and resident I don’t want the government to mislead me.

I would like to see a news organization do a full investigative report on the lies, myths and exaggerated numbers being told about sex trafficking slaves. The articles about the super bowl sex slaves, has been proved wrong many times, but news organizations still report about it, as if it were fact.

There is a lot of controversy over the numbers of adult woman who are forced sex slaves. The real factual answer is that no one knows. There is hard evidence that the sex slavery/sex trafficking issue continues to report false information and is greatly exaggerated by politicians, the media, and aid groups, feminist and religious organizations that receive funds from the government, The estimate of adult women who become new sex slaves ranges anywhere from 40 million a year to 5,000 per year all of which appear to be much too high. They have no evidence to back up these numbers, and no one questions them about it. Their sources have no sources, and are made up numbers. In fact if some of these numbers are to believed which have either not changed or have been increased each year for the past twenty years, all woman on earth would currently be sex slaves. Yet, very few real forced against their will sex slaves have been found.

Sex trafficking is illegal and the pentities are very severe. It is very difficult to force someone to be a sex slave, they would have to have 24 hour guards posted and be watched 365 days a year, 24 hours per day. Have the threat of violence if they refused, and have no one notice and complain to the authorities or police. They would need to hide from the general public yet still manage to see customers from the general public and not have the customers turn the traffickers in to the police. They would need to provide them with medical care, food, shelter, and have all their basic needs met. They would need to have the sex slaves put on a fake front that they enjoyed what they were doing, act flirtatious and do their job well. They would have to deal with the authorities looking for the missing women, and hide any money they may make, since it comes from illegal activity. They must do all of this while constantly trying to prevent the sex slaves from escaping and reporting them to the police. They would need to prevent the general public from reporting them into the police.

This is extremely difficult to do, which makes this activity rare. These criminals would be breaking dozens of major laws not just one. Kidnapping itself is a serious crime. There are many laws against sex trafficking, sex slavery, kidnapping, sex abuse, rape, sexual harassment etc. If someone is behind it, they will be breaking many serious laws, be in big trouble, and will go to jail for many long years. And do you actually think that there is a long line of people who want to have a career as a sex slave kidnapping pimp?

Sex Trafficking/Slavery is used by many groups as a attempt to outlaw all prostitution around the world by saying that all women are victims even if they do it willing. This hurts any real victims because it labels all sex workers as victims. This is done by the media, aid groups, NGO’s, feminists, politicians, and religious organizations that receive funds from the government. There are very strong groups who promote that all adult women who have sex are victims even if they are willing, enjoy it and go out of there way to get it. These groups try to get the public to believe that no adult women in their right mind would ever go into the sex business unless she was forced to do so, weather she knew it or not. They say that 100% of all sex workers are trafficking victims.

They do this in order to label all men as sex offenders and wipe out all consensual prostitution. Which is what their real goal is. There is almost no one who challenges or questions them about their false beliefs. Therefore, the only voices you hear are of these extreme groups. These groups want to label all men as terrible sex offenders for seeing a willing adult sex worker. No one stands up to say this is foolish, the passive public says nothing.

These groups even say that all men who marry foreign women are terrible sex predators who take advange of these "helpless foreign women wives".

These groups believe that two adults having consensual sex in private should be outlawed. Since they believe that it is impossible for a man to have sex with a woman without abusing the woman in the process.

This is an example of feminists and other groups exploiting the suffering of a small minority of vulnerable and abused women in order to further their own collective interests. For example, getting money from the government and Charity into their organizations. Rather than wanting to find the truth.

    == World Cup 2006 ==
Politicians, religious and aid groups, still repeat the media story that 40,000 prostitutes were trafficked into Germany for the 2006 world cup – long after leaked police documents revealed there was no truth at all in the tale. A baseless claim of 25,000 trafficking victims is still being quoted, recently, for example, by the Salvation Army in written evidence to the home affairs select committee, in which they added: "Other studies done by media have suggested much higher numbers.” Which has been proven by the German police to be completely false. Yet people still talk about these false numbers as if it were fact.
    ==World Cup 2010 ==
Again using the made up number of 40,000 prostitutes trafficked:
The behavior of fans in South Africa has run contrary to what was predicted prior to the start of the tournament after David Bayever told World Cup organizers in March it was feared that up to 40,000 extra prostitutes could converge in the host nation to meet the expected demand. Bayever, deputy chairperson of South Africa's Central Drug Authority (CDA) that advises on drug abuse but also works with prostitutes, warned: "Forty-thousand new prostitutes. As if we do not have enough people of our own, we have to import them to ensure our visitors are entertained."
But the tournament in 2010, if anything, has seen the modern-day soccer fan attracted to art galleries and museums over brothels.
A trend that has seen a drop in revenue across the board for the prostitution industry, which is illegal in South Africa. "Zobwa," the chairperson of Sisonke - an action group representing around 70 street prostitutes in Johannesburg - said business had been down over the last month. "The World Cup has been devastating. We thought it was going to be a cash cow but it's chased a lot of the business away. It's been the worst month in my company's history," the owner and founder of one of Johannesburg's most exclusive escort companies told CNN.

    edition.cnn.com/2010/SPORT/football/07/09/prostitute.gallery/index.html?iref=allsearch&fbid=0Ox1WH9NNpl

In recent years, every time there has been a major international sporting event, a group of government officials, campaigning feminists, pliant journalists and NGOs have claimed that the movement of thousands of men to strange foreign countries where there will be lots of alcohol and horniness will result in the enslavement of women for the purposes of sexual pleasure. Obviously. And every time they have simply doubled the made-up scare figures from the last international sporting event, to make it look like this problem of sport/sex/slavery gets worse year on year. Yet each year it is proved false.

This myth tries to make every sports fan a sex criminal. No matter what the sport is, or in what country it is in. These anti-prostitution groups need to in invent a victim that does not exist in order to get press attention.

    Let's move from acknowledging
"A Crime So Monstrous; Face-To-Face With Modern Day Slavery"
to writing a new chapter to
"A Challenge So Monstrous; Steo-By-Step to Eradicating Modern-Day Slavery"

I came across a book titled "A Crime So Monstrous; Face-To-Face With Modern Day Slavery" three years ago in 2008 and the book was written by E. Benjamin Skinner with foreword by Ambassador Richard Holbrooke. The author shocked me with numerous, extensively research of lives of child labor and bonded labor in India, sex slaves in Tokyo, Paris, Amsterdam .....

    I was bewildered and flabbergasted by the horrific stories, It was simply beyond my wildest imagination. My soul was bleeding and touched with trepidation. I could not help but keep asking myself;

"Is this really happening today, and seemingly so widespread and rampant?"
"How could human being be so cruel and senseless to other fellow human being?"
"Where is our compassion for others?"
"Who in their right mind would exploit others who simply are less fortunate?"
"How can we eradicate this "monstrous crime"?".

The sadness and suffrage of children in India, young girls from Eastern Europe was simply beyond me.

I was courageous in finishing the book from cover to cover. Yes, I was thankful to the author for opening my eyes, but I was frustrated and "MAD AS HELL". The stories were so vivid and it left an impact on me ever since.

What is the cause? What is the solution?
Is it poverty? Is it education? Is it cultural?....
I am afraid there is no short answer to this, it is all of the above.
"A Crime so Monstrous" is the title of the book.
The challenge to eradicate such crime is equally monstrous.

We human being from all corners of the world need to begin to write another book.
"A Challenge So Monstrous; Steo-By-Step to Eradicating Modern-Day Slavery"

In case you are also following CNN, three years later today, CNN is finally picking up on the issue and as I see it I thank CNN for writing the first chapter of this book. A good beginning never too late to start.

Having spent the last 14 years with the UN directing and conducting research projects and developing trafficking/unsafe migration prevention programs for minority peoples in Thailand, China, Cambodia and Laos, I have yet to see much benefit from endless repetion of the mantra that trafficking is "a modern forms of slavery" (sometimes, but not usually), "a worldwide scourge", "a crime that shames us all", and "getting worse" (little evidence; it is in some places, but not others).
1)The "Hidden Population" idea is used to excuse whatever unsourced, made-up numbers - no matter how ludicrous - anyone wants to toss around. Kevin Bales makes a serious attempts with his estimates - one can agree or disagree - but they are serious. The same can't be said from some of the other "experts" that you cite. John Miller's quote by Skinner is simply silly; there has been considerable scientific work on how to estimate hidden populations.
2)The real problem in estimating human trafficking is that it is a process not an event. While some people are kidnapped from their homes, for most people trafficking is migration gone terribly wrong. Depending where along the migration process the person is encountered, they will fall into very different categories - displaced person, refugee, labor migrant, illegal alien, etc., or trafficking victim.
3)Trafficking/unsafe migration is a complex of complicated issue impacted by questions of legal status, discrimination, stigma, land rights, political persecution and a number of others. It is great that these young women believe in "Freedom and Love", and are "Taking a Stand Against Slavery", but what "stand" are they taking? Will they pressure governments to allow labor to move across borders as freely as capital so Shans fleeing Burma won't need 'facilitators' to survive in Thailand? Will they check their shrimp to make sure that it does not come from one of the factories that imprisons workers without pay? (Remember - if you boycott all shrimp, you are hurting poor people who work in the factories that don't abuse there workers.) If they will do things of this sort, great; if not, despite their good intentions, it is simply another case of feeling good about feeling bad.
      4) What is CNN doing "joining the fight to end modern day slaver"? What other fights have they joined - to prevent AIDS, to cure malaria, to ban landmines, end female genial mutilation? These are all important causes. However, CNN is supposed to be a NEWS organization. CNN is supposed to report - which they actually do, when not self-congratualating about "the best political team on television" or obsessively thanking their reporters for doing their jobs. A news organization should not be a PR firm no matter how worthy the cause.

Starvation is worse than slavery. Ancient systems of slavery have been there to prevent starvation and annihilation of enemy tribes since mankind has evil nature, and because anything is better than hunger and death. Work against starvation, too. Providing education is what people need from this vicious cycle. The ladies in the photo need "justice" as a part of their slogans. "Freedom" and "love" alone sound fools. I'm already supporting Christian missionaries who comat slavery, but this is a good thing CNN is doing.

I have just been to U.A.E and chatting to the taxi drivers, people working in hotels etc. uncovered a side of Emirates I did not know. The wealthy families "employ" these people, I met people from Pakistan, Nepal, Phillipines, Uzbekistan, and HOLD THEIR PASSPORTS so they cannot leave! This is slavery, and this system needs to be exposed and stopped. The place stinks, massive buildings bilt on debt in the middle of the dessert, giant concrete penises pointing into the sky to show the world how much money they have, yet many are have built as they have run out of money, backing from banks etc. I got the impression that this was hell on earth – greed keeping beautiful people trapped in slavery, fueled by their desire to live a life based on false realities and commercial dreams. Lets go back to the simple life, mutual respect, honour, living in harmony with the land, true fulfillment, family values, joy in the smile of a child, teh discovery of a new plant, a bountiful harvest, celebrating the rain, honouring mother earth...

    The CNN Freedom project!?
...how about revealing a true story about the 9/11? which gave USA the reson to invade countries and take over their natural resources.
It's realy time for the west to recognise that our "leaders" (together with media!) are selling us an illusionary freedom!
Dear media (CNN included) – you can not condemn ie. Gadafi and find his dictatorship unacceptable for the humanity while not REACT on hard proof and eye oppening evideces giving you a serious reason to doubt and rethink if the official 9/11 story is realy the truth!!
I'm more than sure you're well aware about this (and videos like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8T2_nedORjw).

It's hard to accept positive intentions of projects like " The CNN Freedom project" in full and find CNN media as credible, while failing to provide an objective view on 9/11 – which is made USA an agressor country.

If, at first look, your "Freedom Project" seems a fair and necessary fight, I think that it is not necessary to send correspondents around the world to denounce modern slavery. It would be better to analyze what is its major source.
Today’s slavery today find a major part of its source in the United States, for instance on Wall Street, and could be explained partly by the lack of morality of those investors whose only occupation is to produce more money from money and secondly the lack of rules of liberal and limitless capitalism.
Since its creation, the United-States are capable of the best and the worst. The best is the quest to liberate people from their yoke of dictatorship, their occupants, to bring them to democracy, the worst is the acceptance of a capitalism without rules, for those brought to its firmament for which money is the sole raw material and whose only aim is to produce more money from money, by forcing boards of directors to increase their annual sales and profits and to achieve this there are only two solutions, sell more or produce cheaper. And it's always this need to produce cheaper, which is the largest source of modern slavery.
Hidden behind this other invention that is the "marketing" and that reverses the values of a product put on sale. Before this sacrosanct spread of "marketing" it was necessary to produce a product and the one who was producing the best quality at the best price was the one who sold the most. Advertising was a way to showcase the product and selling its merits.
Now this is not the case anymore, the one who has the best department of "marketing» achieves the best! You produce poor quality goods to the lowest prices, manufactured by the today’s slaves, and you make them wear by all these "people" and "VIP" that you pay a fortune to do so, fortune representing the biggest part of the costs, and to complete you launch your campaign of “advertising”, which today is no longer to understand the characteristics of a product but only to know who is wearing it or using it!
The solution? Simple! Do as for the cigarettes, announcing their danger on their packages, you mention on the boxes of the concerned products in a legibly way and in their advertisements the following:
    • where they are manufactured
    • by whom
    • at what hourly rate
    • and what social rights they workers enjoy.
Tax the profits and losses of investors and lower the taxes on corporate profits that adopt a charter of non-exploitation of human misery and recognize human rights and social minimum to all workers wherever they are.
I can assure you the United States are not responsible for everything. The second source of modern slavery can be explained by the policy pursued by the leaders in each of the countries where it occurs.
Military dictatorships, political dictatorships, religious dictatorships, or countries where the leaders confiscate the power once they get it or attempt to transmit to their children, system inherited by a tradition of castes, in short all countries where human rights and minimum social rights are not respected.
That's precisely in those countries that those companies produce their products at lower costs!
In light of current events taking place in some Arab countries it would maybe make sense to stop producing in those countries. Their population would be forced one day or another to riot to achieve democracy.

I have heard and read what cnn has been reporting on sex slavery on girls and underaged. Its a good thing you are doing.Bringing awareness to the world and stressing the need to combat it. Unless CNN does not go one step further, such as advocating for capital punishment on those who have been cought directly involved in the sex slavery with proof, nothing is going to change. There will still be victims after victims and the people who refuse to call for death penalty on these traffickers are to be blamed also.
It is the duty and the obligation of right minded people to do what is just. Its not just to offer humanity and human rights to those who inflict torture, pain, subhuman treatment and humiliation and totally destroy the sound mind of a child. That child does not deserve it. If we,who call ourselves civilized and caring and responsible to the protection of these victims of these traffickers, then you must support the death penalty on such traffickers, even if they may be in thousands.Only then, can we put a stop or make a difference and save the sanity of these victims. Perhaps CNN should ask the victims of their opinion. If death penalty is a deserving punishment for their torturers.
If CNN is caring enough and not just treat this issue as another news item for them, then they should believe in the capiital punishment on these traffickers who willingly destroy the lives of these youngsters, just for their gain and satisfaction. What is the need of such a human life? Why should the civilized world try to keep them alive, so that they may be freed after ffew years, only to repeat their acts of torture on these poor girls and boys.
There are many who might say that we have no right to take a human life.It wouldnt be civilized. Just ask yourselves,Is it not the duty of society to condemn and put to death, those who harm in milllions. Would it be civilized, to allow these people few years of jail sentence, and release them to repeat such acts. Many victims of sex slavery die, as they are not strong enough to withstand the pain. Many in Asian countries commit suicide as its a shame to them. What about those deaths. Are they not important. Is it not the fault of society for allowing the deaths of such victims.
It seems that the laws in most countries are in favour of the traffickers, as they are released even after solid proof, only to harm, torture and brutalise many innocent children.
Society needs to demand that their countries change the mild laws on traffickers and put the death penalty as a solution to end these crises once and for all. That would be actually helping the victims and put a death to such businesses. To many victims, its better to die then to live a life of a subhuman.

    Dear CNN,
We are regular viewer of CNN, from long time. In crowd of TV news channels, we like to see the reports and news of CNN. Like ‘Back Story’ , ‘World Report’, ‘Quest means Business’ , ‘International Desk’ and others.
I’m not sure, if its possible but we would like to see more News from around the world, from Asia, Europe or USA. But mostly we are able to see here news from Africa only or on ONE TOPIC like Egypt, Libya. Maybe one of the reason is, nowadays Arab countries are so UNREST and its good to keep eye on the situation. But we like to say that try to put some more news about other countries too. We are living in West Africa and like us a lot of other nationality people are living here and they also like to see news from his home country. I wish soon we can able to see some more news around the world.
I would like to add here, that yesterday we saw ‘THE FREEDOM PROJECT’ on CNN , with hope that it will be a good report on ‘slavery’ and other ‘drawbacks’ of society, but telling the truth it was such a disappointment and shock to see the news on “bounded labour” in India. It was a good topic but sorry to say that “REPORT WAS TOTALLY WRONG”. That is not only the Truth about labour at Brick site in India, as it was shown in report. The story/reality is much more different then, as it was shown. Labour to work at Brick sites they come to work from far away and they took high advances from the BRICK OWNERS and sometimes owners face huge loss bcoz they took the advance and never reach on the place for work. They always make the ‘contract’ for a limited time. its not FULL LIFE WORK WITHOUT PAY. Its not at all like this.
On this report “Madam SARA” work hard, I respect that work but the way how it was telecast, it can create more problem for Indian Brick Owners and for labour too but not make any solutions. After this report, it can possible in Indian political parties can make huge problem for Ruling government, and then Government will make very hard and strong rules against it, and in all this, in the last Labour or owner will suffer but nobody will get solutions.
Purpose for, THE FREEDOM PROJECT should be, show the problems which are present in the society and people/government can be more aware about them and try to stop them.
Like so many people are LOCKED UP in JAILS in india without face the trails. They are inside the prisions for years and nobody have time to see if they are really guilty or not. Overcrowded Jails, Corruption in Government bodies, hold of MAFAIS in government and on higher positions. The process for justice and court work in India It’s super slow , so if you can show something which can push government to solve the cases fast it will be a meaningful purpose of THE FREEDOM PROJECT and some people somewhere on the earth, will be thankful to you.
In Africa, we and so many other nationality people are working but sometimes we also shave to work under circumantance which we are not appropriate, this is also a kind of ‘slavery’ but we have to work here, we also don’t have other options. Bcoz of my own security, can’t describe all this, but I would like to say if you really want to show meaningful THE FREEDOM PROJECT, then go for such topic which are really hurting and suffering people. And don’t show just one side report.
I hope this email will come in knowledge of responsible people of CNN and we can see some action in Future.
    Thanks for reading the email

    Dear CNN,
I do agree human trafficking is one of the underlying cost of child prostitution and child labor n which is infact an institution of slavery. But did you know that right in the USA there are companies and factories engage in another form of
slavery? For example, there is a refregurated trucking company base in Salt Lake City UT by the name of CR-England INC, that recruits recent graduates from various truck driving schools with the sole intent of employing. But once those students go through through their screening process and pass, instead of hiring them as company drivers, they (CR-England) push the drivers into a lease program and deny almost every driver a company position.Once into the lease every penny made goes to the trucking company. Tey depatch you on loads that can give you weekly millage just enough to make your lease payment but never enough to pay your personal bills and feed your family.
Oh! u may ask were you forced tosign the lease? And I will say no, but they trick you into coming to be a company's driver, with that assurance you leave your less paying job for a higher paying one and all you get is to be enslaved to CR-England INC. Sounds familier how millions of young females are easily tricked and sold into sexual slavery? So my friends their are so many of my fellow truck drivers out there enslaved working as leased owners operators for CR-ENgland INC. In Salt Lake City UT and Burns Harbor IN.when will we hear their untold STORIES?

    Many Thanks Steve.

As i was former child labor, how is life in child slavery, I am proud to whom who gave me freedom and education. Today I know life in freedom, education and meaning of humanity. Now one of my goals in my life is to make life difference. I would like to try and help stop child slavery around the world becasue of my life give me the courage to do this .I am always proud to whom who has given thousands of children their lfreedom back and determined to achieve goal to end child slavery and human slavery. I think freedom is not free untill all human slavery get back their freedom. Imagine all the children working and tortured, and life without meaningful. How would you feel if you had no control of your freedom or life.

The Village Voice has a good story about human sex trafficking in the March 24, 2011 issue

Here is the latest News about the Sex Trafficking Myth:

Government Officials, and various anti-prostitution groups: Traffick911, Not for Sale, Change.org, Polaris Project, Salvation Army, The Dallas Women’s Foundation, and many more, which are anti-prostitution groups that tell lies in order to get grant money from the government and charities to pay their high salaries, and get huge amounts of money into their organizations.

Latest News fresh off the press:

John Stossel, a libertarian, plans to discuss the legalization of prostitution on his show Thursday, March 24 at 8 pm mountain time on Fox Business News channel.

    http://sextraffickingtruths.blogspot.com/

    http://bebopper76.wordpress.com/2010/11/09/sex-trafficking-lies-myths/

These groups even say that all men who marry foreign women are terrible sex predators who take advantage of these “helpless foreign women wives”.

These groups believe that two adults having consensual sex in private should be outlawed. Since they believe that it is impossible for a man to have sex with a woman without abusing the woman in the process.

Major News organizations have been telling lies about sex trafficking, and sex slavery.

There's an old saying in journalism: If your mother says she loves you, check it out.

It's a facetious way of saying: Trust no one, verify everything.

Yet some of the biggest, most respected media outlets in the country failed to perform their due diligence when it came to the Schapiro study's ridiculous claims about a nationwide child trafficking epidemic.

In an era defined by fast-paced blogging and doing more with less, reporters have precious little time to document the information they're regurgitating. This leaves readers vulnerable to pseudoscience and quackery.

    Dear All,
I could see lots of people talking about the countries where slavery is shown as a big problem where actually it is very less in comparison to the total population of the country and the workforce available there. Lets talk about middle-east nations. No!!!!! why not!!!! Middle east is the place where modern day slavery is most active and unfortunately most of the media people shy off in talking about these countries. Interesting fact about middle east is that not only the blue collar job holders are exploited but also the so called white collar workers are the victims including engineers, doctors and accountants. South Asian countries are the most common victims. Their passports are confiscated. They are paid less. Preventing resignations by threats and much more. I hope CNN will come out with a extended report. Beware, we are taking about the world where there is no democracy and media is supposed to report only what is allowed by the rulers.
    bye

I wonder if India will get worried about the truth comming out about their major trafficing buesness?? I was over there during my millitary stint doing some training. We had to post extra guards to prevent the thefts of our millitary gear by many of them trying to break in to end up trying to sell it BACK to ones stolen from in first place! Or the ones trying to SELL their daughters to us for a free VISA to america! It made us sick to see the attempts and the scams they tried to get free ride to america..! And its even more sickening to see a father who tries to SELL a 12 year old girl into marriage like a guy here sells a work horse on farms.! And reason wanted to sell to a american is because wouldnt have to pay a dowery like to another Indian guys family!! And was slobbering about his WHOLE FAMILY STATUS BEING HIGHER caste than others then.. And would not understand the word NO and got extreemly berligerant when told that. We were glad we left there. Women and children ARE NOT ANIMALS to sell...!! Period!
