Hong Kong (CNN) – College students in Hong Kong stood on campus for 27 hours to raise awareness of modern-day slavery, in a campaign that ended on Thursday.
The “Stand for Freedom” event, which was organized by students from the University of Hong Kong's International Christian Fellowship group, raised HK$10,000 (U.S.$1,300) for human rights agency International Justice Mission. The funds will help support victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression, according to Christina Chan, one of the event's organizers. Chan grew up in the U.S. and first learnt about modern-day slavery at a conference there last year.
“It just seemed so unacceptable that we teach so much about how bad slavery is, yet it happens so much more today and no one even knows about it,” she said.
According to United Nations estimates, there are 27 million people worldwide who, through violence or threats, are forced into forms of slavery such as sexual exploitation, forced labor and armed conflict.
Hong Kong is a transit point for people from China and South East Asia who are trafficked for forced labor and prostitution, a 2012 report by the U.S. State Department found.
But the Chinese territory is also a recruitment center for traffickers, according to the report. Many women travel to Hong Kong voluntarily for legal employment in restaurants, bars and hotels but are coerced into prostitution under conditions of debt bondage when they arrive.
“A lot of people in Hong Kong are under the assumption that slavery is gone,” said Alfie Ariwi, a volunteer who stood on campus from midnight until the early hours of Thursday morning.
“They walk through Wan Chai or Mong Kok and they think that these sex workers are free. They don’t realize they have pimps and madams controlling them.”
More than 50 students took turns to stand on campus, in shifts that lasted from two to eight hours. The students collected the money by selling homemade bracelets and baked goods, and taking donations from passersby.
I stand from FREEDOM too,..."NEVER AGAIN" ! should be motto of every single citizen of earth not just Holocaust survivors. We have GOD given right to be free and arm ourselves to the teeth for self-defense !!!
Hong Kong is one of the countries with the most Philippino maids hired as servants, some of them earning an extremely low wage, working tremendous long hours, with bad living conditions and accommodations (often in storage rooms or kitchen) and treated badly as much as a slave basically. So when does Hong Kong disbands such modern day slavery and prohibit the use of maids or servants?
There are ONLY two options for you Philippines:
1. stay home without job and watch your whole family starving to death.
2. do the maid job in HK to keep your family feeded and meanwhile increase your little government's GDP
Don't push your lucky!!!
You are obviously not educated for saying that. Go read a book and help yourself please!.
Try to go India to protect their slavery caste system, you gonna get gang raped for sure.
Don't be afraid to look into the Lao Gai. Even if you face pressure not to from different arms of the Lao Gai supporters. Freedom takes courage. It takes more than holding a sign against things we all agree with (publicly). It takes the courage to look into the parts we don't all agree with. And call them what they are.
It's happening everywhere. Rising costs of living with no rising wages. It's mostly corporate America's fault because they're world wide these days. Low wages equal higher quarterly profits. History will repeat itself...
It's up to the government's of places to police themselves. That's their job. The existence of slavery in a territory is the fault of any government body that is involved or can do something about it but insn't. Corporations will sell based on profit, and cannot always use sound judgement. Even if corporations did care more about slavery, the slave drivers would just create a fake organization from which to indirectly supply corporations labor. Which they actually do many times. The governments of slave labor must stop it. It's a crime against all that is human, and no economic excuse should be acceptable!
