Obama: Every nation can tackle slavery

President Barack Obama called modern day slavery "barbaric" and "evil" as he spoke out Tuesday against trafficking and praised companies, organizations and individuals fighting the traffickers.

He also signed an executive order strengthening protections against human trafficking for domestic federal contracts, and tightening anti-trafficking rules for government contracts abroad worth more than $500,000.

Speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative, Obama said: "It ought to concern every person, because it's a debasement of our common humanity. It ought to concern every community, because it tears at the social fabric.

"It ought to concern every business, because it distorts markets. It ought to concern every nation, because it endangers public health and fuels violence and organized crime.

"I’m talking about the injustice, the outrage, of human trafficking, which must be called by its true name–modern slavery."

Obama praised businesses taking steps to fight trafficking in their industry, church groups for using their faith to tackle slavery and individuals trying to make sure the products they buy are slave-free.

He said: "Our fight against human trafficking is one of the great human rights causes of our time, and the United States will continue to lead it."

Obama also spoke about modern-day slavery in the U.S., from child sex slaves to migrant workers who have their documents taken from them.

He said: "Last year we charged a record number of predators with human trafficking… We are going to do more to spot it and stop it."

Obama said that would include working with train and bus employees and teachers to help identify potential trafficking victims.

He added: "Everyone has a responsibility. Every nation can take action."

The Obama executive order says contractors and subcontractors working in the U.S. on federal projects cannot use misleading recruitment practices; charge employees recruitment fees; and destroy or confiscate an employee's identity documents.

All those techniques are often used by traffickers as a way of luring in victims vulnerable to trafficking.

Internationally, the order says contractors and subcontractors on jobs worth more than $500,000 must have a trafficking awareness program, and a safe way to report trafficking suspicions. The contractors must also guarantee both they and workers or companies they hire are not involved in trafficking-related activities.

A White House news release read: "More than 20 million men, women, and children worldwide are victims of human trafficking.

"Companies around the world are taking steps to eliminate the potential for trafficked labor in their operations and supply chains, and President Obama is committed to protecting vulnerable individuals as government contractors and subcontractors perform vital services and manufacture goods procured by the United States.

"As the largest single purchaser of goods and services in the world, the U.S. Government has a responsibility to combat human trafficking at home and abroad, and to ensure American tax dollars do not contribute to this affront to human dignity."

Obama isn't enslaving people in this country he already has – just ask that part of the 47% who have to depend on the government for their support when in fact they want a good paying job.

Where's the good paying jobs he promised – there aren't any – all he talks about is taking wealth away from those who earned or have it and using that to make larger government.

Government doesn't build the economy – businesses do and to date we have lost over 4 million jobs within the last two years because of Obamas opression.

Excuse me? I am white and I am Irish lady! Not a single one of my descendants owned any slave. My family did not even come over to the US until the late 1800's AFTER slavery was abolished. Not to mention after my 3/4ths Irish, I am 1/4 Native American! So don't talk when you don't know.

How could one think that every white person's ancestors owned slaves? Where do you get your data? There were few plantations but they owned many slaves and they are the rich men who paid others to fight in the war in their place. The white man that you seem to hate was the poor share cropper that had no money to pay someone else to fight for him when he was drafted. Every nation in the world has at one time owned slaves but the USA is the only nation that can't seem to get over it.

My family became very, very wealthy from the black slave trade, using you worthless creatures for profit. This wealth has been passed on throughout our generations, and I now enjoy a very luxurious life of pure comfort. No work, no house bill, no car bill, and I can do whatever I want to do, at any time.

Black slavery was only possible in the United States because Africans sold other Africans to Europeans, but you don't like the truth much, do you?

      • rt4y

Raven, first you are an idiot. Not every white person in America owned slaves. Second if you want to throw blanket accusations with out a shred of evidence to back it up, all you africans descendants are benefiting from selling your brothers and sisters into slavery for your own gain. And on the first topic, I have no slaves, don't know any slaves, and pretty sure outside of stories neither do you. Move on, there are many things that happened that are not nice. If you hold on to your hate over something that DOES NOT AFFECT YOU and really don't even know what you are talking about, you will look ridiculous.

Hmmmmm....I know which side of the Bible you work on. First off, You don't respect peoples opinion. You may have gotten rich off of the slave trade. But all the money in the world won't do you any. good. You don't need money where you are going. I love all people no matter what race they are. They have bad people in all races, as they have good. If you read the Bible, Revelation will tell you exactly what is happening in the world right now. Rumors of war, mass confusion, Nation against Nation, Kingdom against Kingdom. The only way to survive is through Christ our Lord Jesus Christ. I don't care if this makes you mad. The truth usually hurts. Have a great day and God Bless.

If you actually READ something, you would know that Obama has deported MORE illegal Aliens than ANY OTHER RECENT PRESIDENT !

      http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/wp/2012/08/27/obama-is-deporting-more-immigrants-than-bush-republicans-dont-think-thats-enough/

As of July, Obama deported 1.4 million illegal immigrants since the beginning of his administration — that’s 1.5 times more immigrants on average than Bush deported every month, according to official numbers from the Department of Homeland Security*. But that’s only part of Obama’s deportation strategy: The administration’s stated goal is to prioritize the deportation of criminal, dangerous illegal immigrants. And it’s promised to make a new program called Secure Communities mandatory by 2013, which would force local law enforcement to share fingerprints of those arrested with the Department of Homeland Security, which has immigration records, through the FBI.

you ever consider the idea that with the worst American economy in over 80 years that all those illegals decided it was best to go home, and the quickest way to get back home, and the cheapest, is too get caught by ICE and driven/flown there? That is why we have spike in deports, not because this administration is actually trying to deport more. Name one policy they have enacted to increase deportations.

This is just a subliminal attempt to get latino votes. The best way to end human trafficking is to make the immigration process transparent. But that does NOT mean giving amnesty to illegal immigrants. It means deporting them, and forcing immigrants to do it the right way or no way at all. Our national may not be at "war" in the legal sense, but we are being invaded by a mass of restless, uneducated, unskilled people who come here and make demands at tax payer expense. There are some who do well here, but we need to stop hiding behind political correctness and admit that most of them are a drain on the system.

No a drain on the system would be to have those illegals come in to the country legally. Right now, with no social security number they are not eligible for government programs. Have them come in to the states legally does not change the fact that most of them would be skilled laborers. So now they would be skilled laborers with rights such as food stamps, medicaid, medicare, etc... which would make them a drain on the system. As it stands now, their labor keeps things cheap in the southwest because they don't have to make minimum wage. It's why home prices in Texas are next to nothing.

Mitt Romney's new friend Mr Milo Minderbinder Dick Cheney has a dark past... Obama speaks out about human trafficking... Did you know that Halliburton, DynCorp and KBR were all suspected of profiting in human tracking...Halliburton and DynCorp were called out on this in the late 1990's in Bosnia..Suspected of supply women to our own military bases in Bosnia... And again in Afghanistan and Iraq all three Halliburton, DynCorp, and KBR, were suspected of supply women to our own troops..some of these women were forced against their will to provide services... As late as 2005, 2006 Donald Rumsfeld was defending these companies in Congressional Hearing ...and they were still receiving government contracts...Donald Rumsfeld defended the companies saying it was not company policy..but just a few employees in the companies doing this...but where did the profits go....Did they end up in the company bank accounts..were the profits handed out in cash to the higher ups.... When the same companies keep showing up on the suspect list of human traffickers ...something is very wrong with those companies..and these companies keep showing up..

@amniculi, sorry but bringing up Bush isn't a logical response to the claim that Obama is a top 5 President. There were 42 Presidents before Bush. Also, Bush will likely be seen differently in 20 years than he is now. While he did begin two wars, both were overwhelmingly supported by Congress and the public initially. You can argue about the exit strategy or lack there of, you can argue about the evidence used to invade Iraq. He gave more AIDS relief than any other President to Africa. He established law that requires states to conduct criminal background checks on prospective foster and adoptive parents. He turned around a slipping economy after the Dot Com crash only to have another disaster (9/11) rock it further. Reduced the estate tax for farms and ranches. These are just a few items there are many many others. You just have chosen to listen to every liberal friend, every liberal media source, and every liberal celebrity, that claimed he was an idiot, claimed he hated black people, claimed he was killing America, but then Obama does similar things and he is touted as a hero, as a top 5 President of all time, that he did the best he could dealing with Bush's slip-ups.

BTW he is NOT a junior. His dad is George H.W. he is George W., not George Jr.

I'd love to see slavery abolished once and for all, but if you look at what defines slavery, it exists here in America everyday. A person who actually is reliable, wants to get up and work to pay their bills, save for retirement, save for family is a slave to the others who don't do anything. Exclude ages of people who have retired or are about to retire. Look at the number of people claiming disablility that are not disabled, look at the government handouts and waste. The Working Class is the slave to the Poor in our country. Look at the amount of money going to SNAP now, look at the number of illegals abusing our healthcare, look at the cost to have inmates, just look at our education system in shambles thanks to the Unions running them, costs going up every year. Look at our new healthcare law, federal poverty is 11,400, so 400% is 45,800 a year. Wonder if you can write off that healthcare policy before paying tax on that money on the IRS. The healthcare legislation is nothing more than a series of taxes, and the proceeds go to people who don't work, because they will get the handout in the form of tax credits. The Rich are getting richer, and lawmakers are bending rules and writing legislation that impacts us all un-equally. I'm all for helping someone, but at what point do we come to a conclusion about the person and determine that enough is enough? There are several people around my area that have several college educations 2year, some 4 year, enjoying living off the system. They just get another stupid degree, and continue on at my expense. What is happening here in America is treason, just about every politician and lobbyist should be considered for treason.

The nagger slaves didn't built a damned thing, don't be fooled. They picked cotton for 16 hours a day, and cleaned up after us so our lives could be that much more enjoyable. That's it. Do you really think we'd allow them to attempt to build anything at all? Keep in mind, we attempted to show them how to properly wear pants when we first brought them to our country, and after 400 years, they still don't get it.

That is very misguided. Slavery is when one person owns another person, whether legally or illegally. Nobody is forcing anybody to use food stamps or go to work every day. That person has the choice to not use the food stamp or to quit their job. A slave has no choice other than suicide.

I think you truly don't understand what slavery is. Something tells me you have had a relatively easy life compared to the people that Obama is speaking about. I bet you have never had to do anything while forced at gunpoint. I bet you haven't had to wonder if you would be fed after working a 16 hour day before. I bet you haven't been forcibly separated from your family. I bet you haven't had to work for years without being paid a cent for it. You clearly are an ignorant man who doesn't understand the gravity of real slavery, instead you try to bend it to a tool of your own political will whining and crying about how the big bad government spends to much and somehow has made you into a slave.

You cannot be speak out against slavery with a blow horn in one hand while the other hand is pressing KILL buttons on drones that decimate entire villages.

The entire region, where drones roam, is living in a state of Orwellian terror. Big brother is watching and without a court of law, the USA is executing terrorists and any child that is inconveniently in the way. Disgusting!

Sometimes I feel like if a politician you didn't like legitimately cured cancer people would say "He's just taking away gods natural way of killing people, who does he think he is?" Once again government funding to support this where we do not have the funds to do so. A possible solution is the countries that deal in the slavery market we withdrawl part of all of their financial aid an other support. Request their ambassadors to leave our nation and we do likewise. Obama is the biggest perp for enslaving people – Of the 47% of our population that depend on the government in one way or another for their support quite a few of them don't want to, and want a good paying job.

If they had good paying jobs they would no longer be enslaved to depend on the government

Where's the jobs, where's the good paying jobs.

All Obama talks about is taking more money away from the wealthy and redistributing it to the rest of the population. That's not the way to build an economy. Apparently he hasn't taken Economics 101 in College.

It's the businesses in this country that makes a strong economy – not people who are enslaved to have to depend on the government because they can't get a good paying job.

    They will do NOTHING to:

    1. Stop illegals from flooding the country to destroy the wages an American can demand. It's only over or under the table they argue about.

    2. Exporting jobs – often at a loss that tax money/debt money makes up.

    3. Lowering and destroying labor/living standards while they put up tons of cameras.

    4. Starving whole countries to death by manipulating markets.

But, whoa... If a WHITE MAN somehow still has money, and he decides to go on a "Fun Trip" overseas, or perhaps visit a "hose of ill repute" inside the USA... Well he's a CRIMINAL, a SLAVER...

You can all see what happens when we let the monkeys out of their cages.
Let us please bring the cages back.
Peace and order, are far more important to an established democracy than the rights of a small fringe group of animal criminals.

How dare he say we are going to fight slavery when we do so much business with countries like communist China,India with their slave labor, child slave labor and trafficking, and all those other countries that pay substandard wages, refuse to adhere to EPA rules for our safety.Dont even get us started on Obama and his illegal alien debate and how they are being imported as slaves and union busters.

This is a good example of why President Obama retains the respect of the American majority. This was a pertinent speech on an issue that should not even exist in 2012.....opposed to Romney's unintelligible and off-topic political gibberings. Once again, he looked like a fool.

We finally have a president whom we can trust, who is smart, who actually cares about the growth, safety and welfare of 100 percent of the citizens of this country and one who understands the incredible importance of maintaining world peace. No need for expensive, unjustified wars that kill innocent people! Obama gets it. Therefore, I plan to keep him four more years! News flash- no more fascist, elitist republican ideology plaguing our nation's image and making the world hate us. Clearly the " every man for himself and God for us all" crew had eight years in the White House and nearing brought this country to its knees. HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN???? RE ELECT BARACK OBAMA so that we keep moving forward.

If USA is against modern slavery and really care about human rights; then this is the right time to take action on human trafficking, rape, torture and abuse of African immigrants by the Bedouins in SINAI. ( boarder between Israel and Egypt). Obama please act as you promises!
