Slavery's last stronghold

Moulkheir Mint Yarba returned from a day of tending her master’s goats out on the Sahara Desert to find something unimaginable: Her baby girl, barely old enough to crawl, had been left outdoors to die.

The usually stoic mother wept when she saw her child’s lifeless face, eyes open and covered in ants, resting in the orange sands of the Mauritanian desert.

The master who raped Moulkheir to produce the child wanted to punish his slave. He told her she would work faster without the child on her back.

Trying to pull herself together, Moulkheir asked if she could take a break to give her daughter a proper burial. Her master’s reply: Get back to work.

“Her soul is a dog’s soul,” she recalls him saying.

Moulkheir, who is in her 40s, told her story to CNN in December, when a reporter and videographer visited Mauritania - a vast, bone-dry nation on the western fringe of the Sahara - to investigate slavery in the place where the practice is arguably more common, more readily accepted and more
intractable than anywhere else on Earth.

Listening to her story, two facts became painfully clear: In Mauritania, the shackles of slavery are mental as well as physical.

And breaking them - an unthinkably long process - requires unlikely allies.

This world is just crawling with wickedness. It happens in the rich countries and the poor countries. There is just little to no respect for most poor, uneducated, useless people. This world has become very much godless, and it truly does show . Many people criticizes God and chants that God is evil, that Satan only murdered 5 people while God has killed millions.

Godless? Look around you. The world is enslaving with the permission of its religious books not in defiance of them. Religion is a scurge on this planet and until it is wiped clean from it, there will be no peace. Religion enslaves minds of the people who enslave bodies. Their conscience is clean if their book allows it. Women, and children are also property in the bible and the Quaran.

S.F.It is apparent that you have studied the quoran however not the Bible. Gods holy word states that a man is to leave his father and mother and become ONE with his wife. To love, protect and provide for her.The Bible further commands that we LOVE one another as God has loved all of us, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Mate, get a copy of the KJV Bible, read the New Testament and see what Jesus actually says about life generally.

In a sense, I agree. I think religious ideals are deeply personal and certainly should be allowed to guide a person in spiritual matters of the heart. For instance, if a loved one is dying we should certainly be free to pray for guidance and strength during such a challenging time. What religious ideals must NOT ever do is give anyone license to judge and/or harm another person. "Judge not that ye be not judged." We must instead seek to be tolerant and loving of others even if their beliefs fly in the face of what we believe. Tolerance, love, kindness and compassionate are the very essence of any true religion. Anyone not practicing these ideals is not "religious".

Hey Phil A, sorry to burst your bubble, but the Bible mentions slavery all throughout and even gives instructions on how to manage and deal with slaves (while never once denouncing it). It is you who doesn't know the Bible. Out of the 66 books that make up most Protestant Bibles, Jesus is only recorded speaking in 4 of them. It's interesting how you like to pick and choose a few unrelated words and thoughts in the Bible to try to prove your point, but I supposed apologists have been doing that for centuries. Check Leviticus 25:44-46, Exodus 21:2-6, Exodus 21:7-11, Exodus 21:20-21, 1 Timothy 6:1-2 for just a few examples. Even Jesus didn't seem to think there was anything wrong with slavery, and actually used slavery as a nice example in one of his parables (and seems to even approve of the beating of slaves!) (Luke 12:47-48). Enough said.

In case someone doesn't have access to a Bible:

When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her. And if the slave girl's owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave girl, but he must treat her as his daughter. If he himself marries her and then takes another wife, he may not reduce her food or clothing or fail to sleep with her as his wife. If he fails in any of these three ways, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment. (Exodus 21:7-11 NLT)

However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. (Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT)

What a ridiculous comment. The New Testament does NOT give "permission" for slavery. That is either a LIE on the part of the commenter who asserted it, or it is simple ignorance.

      • Mary Hughes

And 'John' is talking OLD testament. Jesus DIED in order to bring about the NEW testament – specifically because the OLD ways NEEDED to be corrected. Many people who sincerely consider themselves Christian don't understand that, but the Old Testament is most DEFINITELY not the entirety of the Bible. Talk about taking something SERIOUSLY out of context. The Old Testament also speaks of kings. John: Next you're going to say that Christianity promotes monarchy. Get real.

Yes, the bible does mention slavery several times, but the slavery that existed with the nation of Israel was not sadistic. Jews could sell themselves into slavery to pay off a depth. There were specific instructions on how to treat slaves which did not include the following: Raping, murdering, berating, or dehumanizing (Exodus 20:26,27)
The Slavery that existed more recently is not what took place in bible times. If you are an honest person you know the clear distinction. Slavery in bible times is not the same. It is amazing what some humans do to appease their desensitized consciences (consciences that don’t exist).

@Mary Hughes, exactly my thought ... we are no longer living in the Old Testament, but in the New Testament. This is why Jesus died, to save the souls of the lost ... back then, and now, and forever ... until the end of time.

IIf God is all powerful, all knowing, loving, compassionate, why does he allow this wickedness? Why does he choose his absentee father style of hands off parenting of the children he loves so much? Why does his word come strictly from disgusting, self serving hypocrites and pedophiles, human parasites, and liars? He could easily boom his voice out daily to let the masses know they needed to address something. If this God of yours is so Divine, why are all his failings so human? Skip the "you just have to have faith and He works in Mysterious ways speech.

Why did you ask that? Is that a call to be saved? Are you looking to argue online? Are you trying to dissuade others from believing? Or is it that you are trying to build your case for when you are standing in front of Jesus? The thief that stands in front of the judge, if he says that he is a nice guy though and he has a family and he didn't really mean to hurt anyone, will the judge let him go? No, he has to establish a rule of law so the murderer doesn't have a hay day. God has laid out his laws and expectations and even took further mercy upon us and showed us how it is done. If you have an inkling of a care for your soul, do the research yourself. It is all laid out in the Bible. You read, God shows your things that you never knew before and most importantly, gives you an understanding of the question you just asked. While we take for granted that it is a natural process, us reading and understanding, with the Bible, it is anything but. Read, seek out whether or not you believe and you will receive a God given revelation of the meaning of YOUR life.

To leave a child dying, can some normal mind even think about it? What happened to YOU people, how much of this suffering has to lay its hands in OUR world?

You are absolutely right. The scriptures do not fail in its predictions. They never have! Have you ever read 2 Tim. 3:1-7? The world condition that we are seeing today is described in this chapter. In other words, there is no escaping it. Men simply can not correct the world situation, he’s far too corrupt to do so. The few that do want to correct such situations are generally silence or crush into silence by the very evil that rules the world system.

Most of the ignorant liberals that use the term or call people racists have no concept of its orgins! African slave traders identified their tribal captives by the shapes of the skulls rather than by the color of their skin! Only in america is the history of slavery suppressed and affiliated solely with white owners, which is minor in time historically speaking! Slavery dates back to the time before Egyptians. This is a Democrats slant on history and brand of racial caldron stirring! ...this is all they have left!

Here's the problem with your rant – historically American slavery is incredibly different from Roman or other forms of slavery. Slavery is also not as much as a political or leftist issue as you would imagine, and I say imagine because you don't seem interested in knowing before you speak. Everyone can agree slavery is bad and blame for this lies with many people – you do realize that white propagation of slavery for 200 or more years hardly negates African liability and culpabiility? What an odd thing to do – blame Africans in a gneeral sense without acknowledging its history.

No one wants to be a slave and shouldn't be a slave. If each person did their own work instead of being lazy and looking for someone else to do it, this would have never been an issue – irregardless of race. Anyone who participates in this is one of the soul-less ones. There is never justification for FORCING someone else to do the work another should be doing.

Before Spaniards began bringing African slaves (sold by their own African brothers) to America, the Portuguese had already been having slaves in their African colonies and later in Brazil. Not much later English, French and Dutch were having slaves in their colonies in America. Don´t put the blame of slavery in just one country as the common way of thinking during those times was to accept slavery as something normal and even even justifiable by the Bible.

Slavery has existed since Classical times, it is something that likely existed in some form prior to people having the ability to write and record these events. What is known is that in the ancient world, the Greek and Roman Empires, as well as the Indian and Chinese empires, all had slavery. However, in 11th and 12th century slavery in northern Europe became increasingly unpopular, despite remaining common in Southern and Eastern Europe. In modern times, however, when slavery is discussed it usually refers to chattel slavery. Read more on When and How Slavery start visit http://slaverystart.com/ to gain more knowledge of Who is who?

African Americans are not black, their Hebrew. Scattered to the four corners of the earth. The Blacks, Latinos, and Central Americans that came from West Africa are the true descendants of the Israelites. We are scattered to the four corners of the earth because we didnt follow the laws, statutes and commandements Yahweh gave us and thus we fell under the curses in Leviticus 26 and Deutoronomy 28. Read those and tell me if the Jews in Israel today have had THAT much trouble befall them and the answer is NO!

      March 24, 2012 at 11:55 pm | Reply

Royal: Really? Because genentics tell us that the greater part of Native Americans (so too Latin Americans that are part native) are originally of Asian extraction. I realize science does not put a dent in the thinking of the religious but it is, none-the-less, the truth. As well, the mapping of the human genome shows that there does not exist a thing called "race". This is a cultural distinction. And while it has been used as the vehicle for horrible crimes (slavery in America, the Holocost etc.), it is never-the-less not a scientific point of view.

Lastly, even if what you asserted was true, you certainly could not make a good legal claim to anything like the land of the so-called tribes of Israel. The sooner people drop rediculous ancient land claims, the better.

It's very easy to look at slavery in another country or continent and feeling good condemning it. However, what about a prison system in which approximately 1% of the total population of a country is incarcerated because of some phony war on drugs? On top of that, what if that prison population is overwhelmingly black and the prison system is privatized and thus commercialized? That looks very slaverish to me too. Phenomenal! When it comes down to one of the most basic of the human needs, shelter, I have options to make my own. They hardly have sticks. They don't have a chance; no way out. The children are eating sand. Most ARE physically chained, with the need to eat. Praise God for the revolutionaries that are willing to go through such peril to shed light on such atrocities occurring in our civilized world. I cannot even put the word civilized in quotes for a facetious undertone. With such a stark comparison, that is one of the worst places in this world, barbaric. That is what this situation calls for is revolutionaries. What was weighing my mind today in my amazing life as a United States citizen, as I basque in the freedom I take for granted? Reset. Oh yeah, it doesn't even matter. The world is so much bigger and filled with purpose than every other small THING that happened in my day, or life, comparatively. We are called to work to give to the poor. If any of you are a Christian let your conscience convict you (or just if you are aware of the existence of your soul). Help! Have you ever seen anyone more poor? My next stop is "How to help end slavery in Mauritania"; then dictionary.com to learn how to pronounce Mauritania.

    Hell exists.

It exists in the physical, three dimensional realm, the emotional as well as others.

This is how it punishes those who did wrong. In the present birth or in a previous. The woman and the child – as horrible as that is – and will later, the murderous slave owner. Understanding how these dynamics work is not easy and often beyond our mundane capabilities.

I agree with you that we are paying now or will pay later for our inequities. Pierre Tielhard de Chardin (1881-1955) wrote "We are not human beings on a spiritual journey, we are spiritual beings on a human journey". We will be held accountable for our human actions (or inaction). Was'nt the United Nations formed to address issues like slavery and killing of innocents (like Syria today)?

Children are sold into slavery by their parents here in Ecuador because abortions are illegal. The church says that every condom used prevents a child from being born; I wonder who is going to take care of those children once they are born, the church certainly isn't stepping in and taking those children off the street and away from their "handlers".

When you say "the church" it sounds like thinking there is only one Christian church & it's only Catholic. The Catholic church is not the only Christian denomination/church. You should look into Protestant churches. Almost all different Protestant Christian churches allow condoms & other birth control.

Is the "master" Muslim? Is the slave Christian? Animist? The religion of those involved should be reported. The same goes for the Muslim "pirates" in Somalia who claim Mohamed was their model and that stealing from and kidnapping non-Muslims is moral. Gender is important to report and so is geography. Religion shouldn't be ignored.

Considering where they are in the world I'd imagine that they practice some sort of Islamic animism. I doubt they belong to any of the mainstream Islamic sects.

Slavery takes on many forms – the above example being most egregious. But so is wage slavery. Wherever those with greater monetary influence use itto force others to produce whilst they reap the benefits; slavery exists. This is the case in most every country in the world.

This story is a lie!!! There is slavery in the United States of America and many other countries on earth. The system of government in the USA that transfer money from working middle class citizens to low income racist and rampantly criminal thugs who have children out of wedlock that need to be aborted but are given money that comes from hard working middle class people is a type of slavery against working people. If you are poor and a thug then don't have children. I am middle class and am tired of being your slave!!!!!!

Agreed, although I'd probably phrase it differently. Income tax is a joke. Consumption tax is the only fair system of taxation.

Although you can be thankful in other ways for the US tax system. At least its a flat rate for everybody. The UK has a two tier system, with the higher tier paying 50% tax on their income

You are a slave. You will pay federal and many other types of taxes or you will suffer. Volunteer or be forced. There is no "free" choice but, it's better than full fledged communism, so far.

This story makes one cry. It is not only about slavery but about the heartless killing of an infant. Such societies need to be exposed. The killing of females in Indian societybecause of their gender is another aspect of culture that should be kept in focus and the practice abolished in India and elsewhere where it may exist.

If we had to follow the bible literally, it would be a literal mess, which it literally is. Please do me favour, the bible is full of contradictions-in the old testament, excuse my ignorance as i don't recall which book, god states if you find another town worshiping another God, you must kill all the woman, children and livestock and then you must burn that village or town to the ground and by the way-Thou shalt not kill.

There is slavery in america... prisoners in jail. If they refuse to work they will be severly punished. We all overlook this form of slavery due to the christian ethic of paying for your "sins". But call it what ever you wish... slavery under any other name is still slavery. There are many unemployed non prisoners who could use the work.

Slavery still exist near us. It happens not only in underdeveloped countries but also in advanced countries too. We just don't realize it or we don't want to notice it. Arrogance and ignorance make it worse and worse. It will continue under many greedy and selfish reasons. Therefore we should faces the problem for those minorities. It cannot be ignored.
