Hope for Vietnam's children of the dump

By Natalie Allen, CNN

Twelve-year-old Dieu wears a bright-green top sprinkled with yellow flowers as she squats in a pile of garbage with her mother.

The two talk and laugh while their hands work quickly, sorting plastic from the discarded food and waste.

A full bag will bring their family just pennies. But this is their life’s work. They live on a dump in Rach Gia, Vietnam, part of the Mekong Delta.

Dieu’s little sister, one of nine siblings, watches from the family’s two-room shack. One of her brothers sits on a nearby tombstone with his dog. The dump lies on an abandoned cemetery, and the above-ground tombs are the only places to sit that aren’t covered by trash.

Some 200 families live on this and one other dump in Rach Gia. They are three generations of Cambodians who fled the brutal Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s. It’s the only home they have ever known.

What they eat and what they wear is often from what they find in the trash. For the longest time, the children didn't even know flip-flops were supposed to match.

But there is a danger here far worse than filth or poverty.

Human traffickers prey on these poor people’s desperation. Children are bought and sold here, some for as little as $100. The parents sell because they are tricked into believing that the buyer has good intentions, that their children will have a promising job and a promising future. They so badly want to help their sons and daughters escape poverty.

Oftentimes, however, the children end up as sex slaves.

“The trafficker looks like your mom, (the trafficker) doesn't look like a bad guy," said Caroline Nguyen Ticarro-Parker, who founded the Catalyst Foundation to help Dieu and other children in Vietnam's poorest communities.

The kids are sometimes stolen, too, when they make their long walk into town to sell lottery tickets.

“When we started, we knew of a house that was at the entrance of the dump, and we know girls were being taken in there by traffickers and being raped,” Ticarro-Parker said. "If they screamed, then they were let go. If they didn't scream, then they were taken. And the girls were as young as 4."

Lessons for survival

After leaving Dieu’s dump, I arrive at another one just as a sanitation truck leaves behind a fresh pile.

People scurry with picks and bags and start sorting. They work day and night alongside their children. At 1 a.m., when the last truck of the day arrives, they all don headlamps to work in the dark.

I follow a mother who carries her baby to the family’s shack. One could barely call it that; it is nothing more than tarps strung together for shelter. Bowls of discarded food are covered in flies. Clothes dry on barbed wire.

The mother lays her baby in a net strung up as a hammock. After rocking the baby to sleep, she heads back out to work in the dump.

Another parent offers me his baby when I arrive. He is cradling a little boy, months old, wearing a colorful striped hat. The father swats flies away from the child’s face. He mistakenly thinks I am here to buy his baby.

Ticarro-Parker’s family fled Vietnam when she was a child. She returned as an adult to give back to her homeland, bringing clothes to the poor. But when she stumbled onto the families of the Rach Gia dumps, she knew much more had to be done.

She went back home to Minnesota, started raising money and eventually opened a school for the children of the dump.

Lesson one: Arm the children with cell phones so they can call for help.

“It sounds weird, but we gave the prettiest girls the cell phones first,” Ticarro-Parker said. “They’re most at risk.”

Lesson two: Teach the children to read so that if they are taken, they can read city signs and call the school to let them know where they are.

That happened in 2008. Four girls were taken, but the traffickers were caught because the girls had a cell phone and knew how to read a road sign to give their location.

Lesson three: Teach the children to run if strangers approach.

That’s exactly what 13-year-old Hanh did when men, presumably traffickers, chased her and her brother as they walked home on the last day of school in 2010. She did what she was taught and ran. But while getting away, Hanh fell into a canal and drowned.

Ticarro-Parker fights back tears recalling the tragedy: “She died doing what we asked.”

Before she died, Hanh was interviewed for the school’s first brochure. Next to her picture is a quote of what hope meant to her: “Hope is my school.”

School is the only hope for these children, Ticarro-Parker says. It strengthens the entire community.

"When we started it was 99% illiteracy,” she said. “None of the parents (at the dumps) knew how to read and write, the children had never been to school.”

They are now down to 40% illiteracy.

“The children are understanding that they could be the generation that doesn't work in the dump,” Ticarro-Parker said.

The school also teaches parents the cold hard truth: what will really happen to their children if they sell them.

In 2006, before the school opened, more than 37 girls from the dumps were sold to traffickers by their parents, Ticarro-Parker said. In 2011, only four were sold.

'A catalyst for change'

Inside one of the school’s two classrooms, a boy writes in his notebook. He clutches a blue pen with fingers covered in dirt, black under all his fingernails. The children are dirty, but their maroon-and-white school uniforms are crisp. Across their backs reads, “be a catalyst for change.” And they all wear shoes that match.

Outside is the sound of a power saw. Volunteers are here to build a playground for the school, which was built on a rice paddy on the edge of the town.

It will be the first real playground these children have seen.

One Vietnamese woman helps the volunteers with sanding and toting wood. She is working to pay off a debt to the school. She sold her teenage daughter to traffickers – twice - and the school helped get her back both times. Now the woman works to pay off her debt.

When the playground opens, the children are waiting. They swarm. Up the climbing wall, down the slide, over the monkey bars, onto the swings. They have to be taught how to pump their legs and pull the ropes to make the swings move. They don’t have any idea how it works. They learn quickly, however, and are soon flying high.

Dieu, on the seesaw, screams with joy as a row of girls fall like dominoes onto the sand in hysterical laughter. Seeing their smiles and hearing their joy, it is hard to believe these children live on a garbage dump.

"Over the last year and a half, the boys and girls have been happy,” Ticarro-Parker said. “They want to be singers and teachers and doctors and architects. Suddenly they have a career in mind. …

“We're not going to eliminate trafficking. We are not going to change this whole culture of girls feeling unworthy of themselves. But we're going to change this group of girls. We're going to change 200 girls. It's going to happen, one girl at a time."

@Valentino – Interesting that a vicious hater chooses the moniker of a famous lover. Talk about irony. How is it that someone reaches adulthood without even the teensiest bit of humanity or compassion in their soul? What happened to you Valentinyheart? Mommy didn't hug you? Were you bullied in school and now hate the world? I feel a lot of pity for you even though your comments deserve nothing but contempt. Personally, the sight of a young girl and her mother picking trash out of a dump breaks my heart, but having heart isn't something you'd be able to relate to.

Stop feeding the trolls, people. They're here for the attention, and you're giving it to them. Your outrage fails to discourage them. Far from it, it's the reward they seek. Ignore them, and they'll find some other place else to entertain themselves.

I really do feel for these young girls. But a part of me agrees with Valentino...a small part and for very different reasons. I feel that we should help our own first, We have the poor, the uneducated, and the ill here on our very streets. Lets take care of this problem before we go out to help others. Its pointless to save someone else who's drowning while drowning yourself.

I have inlaws in Vietnam. All of this mentioned is true. Seen it with my own eyes. Some family members subsidized their living this way until our vist in 1994. We have since helped (4) families with semi-annual funds to assist their living, the children getting better educations rather than peddling on the street resulting in better jobs and living. We in the US don't know what true poverty is. You haven't seen the look on their faces when you hand out the equivalent of one dollar of their currency to them. It means a better meal for several days. Vietnam economy is getting better, however these conditions still persists in some locations, with extreme manual labor the norm in the countryside.

Russell, thanks for being someone who saw a problem and acted on it!! Too many Americans really have no idea what people in some countries endure. If we each took it upon ourselves to help one or two people in need, the world would be a much better place! We can't expect only the super rich or governments to solve these problems. We all have to be actively involved in solving these problems. It's frustrating when people say "but what can I do?". "A heck of a lot" is the answer!

I have a 3 yr old son and reading this article made me cry imagining if my little prince would have to live this way. I guess you'll understand better of the situation if you have seen it with your own eyes. I saw this many times before I left Vietnam a long time ago. thanks for this article to make me realize it still exists.

At least Valintino has no allusions about what he thinks. The rest of you are preachy jerks who contribute nothing to the cause but a finger to point.

Our time's worst's human tragic scenes or cases are making all mankind or world innocents not be able to repress their astonishment. Because they have the slightest conscience as a human being even though their world or global community had been being weighed down with a lot of the vandalism of man and the wreck of time are committed everyday for a variety of reasons. This unworthly and mere low-educated world innocent urges all citizens of the world not to lose its primary meaning of the innate value of a human being, and also, not to be forfeited repsect due to owns inhumane acts/deeds. Unfortunately, those same crimes against humanity are being rampant through the whole countries, particularly, the worst's communist states or the puppet military regimes, whose their whole life intend to perpetrate crimes against humanity and an outrage against mankind. That is a prime example of why those all were forfeite respect or being criticized itslelves in the strongest terms. (From Seoul, South Korea)

Besides, you should understand Barack Obama cant represent every of your thought, our government doesn't represent us. But what Catalyst Foundation and sponsors and CNN and all the great work have been done represent Justice and Humanity. They have been fighting with many challenges to let you see, not to ask you for money. I hope you got happiness and toleration with your own life, your family, or even your irritating colleagues or boss... as you can see... these people have been living in a much more tough condition. Please tolerate every thought, and care every one. Thank you.

You are an idiot. Take a look around you and notice why don't you the demographics in the Ivy League Universities. What racial background is highest within the medical and engineering fields?. These are not dumb people. They have been forced into a situation by way of Khmer Rouge and doing what they have to do to survive. They don't have internet or any help other than what is in front of them and unfortunately, it is a dump. People like you would wither and die (not really a bad thing, it appears) as adversity weeds out the weak. Given an opportunity to do otherwise, trust me... they would. They do not want to live that way. There are some countries where the line between the poor and rich is huge. There is no middle class. Of course, there are some right here in America that don't have any class at all.

Y'know, Valentino, I used to live in Viet Nam. Two of my three children were born in Sai Gon. Yes, the economy in Viet Nam is booming, but there is still a lot of poverty there, and they have very high inflation. You can get at least 15% interest on a CD denominated in VND. No kidding.

I'll tell you straight up that compared to places with *real* poverty, there is no such thing as a poor American. Even our poor typically have running water, gas, electricity, and a TV. Most of them even have cars.

@Neal – capitalism is the reason that VN's economy is booming and poverty has been reduced so much in the last 20 years. It is communism that has failed in VN, just like it has everywhere else.

The Buddhist and Communist faiths of that region has encouraged child exploitation. It is great to see that Caroline, after being saved by Jesus and being inducted into Lutheran Evangelicals, is now saving the children in Vietnam and Cambodia so that their souls can be harvested for Jesus and their bodies can be adopted by Loving Christian Parents of US. The love that a Christian Father of the Blessed Nation of US can give a child from untrue faiths is equal to the Love of Heavenly Father to the True Christians who have saved their Souls from Eternal damnation that faces all others in afterlife, and garbage dump in this life.

I believe that there is at least and always will be a Buddha or Jesus in your heart, and your hand. It is YOU who help these people, or it is your God (Buddha or Jesus or else) helping us through you. Everything is possible if you believe. And i think these people and CF. do have a strong belief in all they do; that's how they survive.

      Hello,
I just read this article which was disturbing, but necessary for me to read. Thankyou for posting something about the solutions that are being done to rescue the children physically and spiritually. I am a follower of Jesus Christ am watching carefully for ways to reach out to children and their mothers, to bring real transformation to them. I am very encouraged by your post.

The only thing smart about this post is your name... everything else is dumber than a door knob. How does religion become a part of this story? And if Christianity is so moral, how about the priests exploiting young children? Or the good christians from the west travelling from Thailand to Cambodia to engage in underage exploitation. Religion has nothing to do with human behavior. Monsters and opportunists do not care what religion they follow. I am tired of Dumb Freaks like you turning this into a religious issue. Also i am pretty sure Sandusky is a good christian..and see what good thigs he has done to young kids near Penn State....

You're right, not all people who claims to be a Christian will follow the Living Words of God. I do understand history shows the ugliness of some so-called Christians. But I assure you there are many who exemplify the Word of God, and live by them. How many more atheist who killed in the name of mankind? When man takes matters into his own hand, and redefine morality, there will be problems. Only by the living Word, and a true relationship with our Loving God, can we live life by serving others, not so we can feel good about ourselves, and not by our power, but by every strength God has given us.

Did you know that you are 100 times more likely to run into a child molestor in the teaching community that you are in the clergy? Yet, because it involved religion, the church scandal took a center stage unlike any other child molestation scandal. The scandal does, however, remind us how we need to remain vigilant against child predators ANYWHERE, and to not be tolerant of them for one second. Having said that, the reality is that religion, by and large, is an overwhelmingly positive catalyst for change and hope across this world. If you have a problem with that positive change, I can see how you have a problem with religion. Otherwise, independent of what your beliefs may be, you should be happy that so many people are inspired to help their fellow man through the strength of their faith.

      • james stings

Please don't berate another's religion because you've been brainwashed into thinking your beliefs are somehow superior. So if the child refuses to accept "your" god, will you continue to help? Seems like there is good intention behind your words, but the vehicle in which you deliver your message is missing at least two wheels. Let's all just agree that the children of the world deserve better than what many of them have to deal with daily.

@RM – you're the dumb freak in this picture. The fact that some monsters and false priests exploit God's church and innocents for their own ends does not make Christ any less real, or His church any less valid. Christians have done, and continue to do, more good in the world than all others combined, because we are called and charged with doing so. Those who ignore the good that we do and point out only the failings of a small minority of people who call themselves Christians but may or may not actually be that are making it quite clear whose side *they* are on.

Leave religion out of this. You shouldn't disrespect Buddhism without looking at your religion first. You know what I'm talking about, priests raping boys, condemning the gays. It is man's interpretations of the lord's teachings that are the root of evil.

      February 14, 2012 at 1:48 pm | Reply
      • Z

So, Jenn, you do not know any Christian's who does good in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ? Ravi Zacharias, Michael Ramsden, Greg Laurie, Ken Ham, Billy Graham, and many unknown names. Yes, there will be people who claims to be Christians and commit crimes against humanity. That's why in the Bible, people ran up to Christ, and said many good things to Jesus, and he turned them away, saying I never knew you. And warned us about wolfs in sheeps clothing. I do hope you find the only one that knows your heart more than anyone around you, and that is Jesus, our Lord.

        February 14, 2012 at 11:11 pm |

No, the root of evil is in man ever thinking there was a lord to giving teachings at all.

        Jen,
You are correct. Priests rape young boys and girls, church knows, church send priests away to another parish while paying victims some hush money.
How many times have we read about pastors banging some married female followers?

While not all Christians are evil, for those who tout the whistle on Christianity being morally superior, you are nothing but an arrogant fool. Clean up your backyard first before pointing finger at someone else.

I'm pretty sure that Buddhism does not encourage a person to be impoverished. Your claim is ignorant. Christianity happens to be the main religion in Uganda and yet they are one of the poorest nations in the world. So do some more research before you make a claim.

..."one of nine siblings". My heart is breaking when i read such articles... These children suffer exactly because of the ignorance of their parents! 9 children? Oh, we will just sell a few of them, so we can feed the others! 9 mouths to feed?! These people should be also taught how t procreate less... having only 2-3 children will make them cherish their offspring more, and also have more food for them! Please, while teaching them how to read, teach them also how to use protection!

Usually the poorest are the ones with the most children because they don't know any better. They have no education and making love is probably their only means of entertainment. I believe educating the parents should also be part of the system in saving these families.

Thank-you for the article. This issue needs constant and enthusiastic coverage. I taught in Vietnam for many years (albeit in Hanoi) and while I agree with Hannn in that Vietnam has come a long way, it would be naive to think the issue is not still a massive consideration and a terrifying reality for children and families. It also scares me to read and hear that it seems so prevalent in the United States as well. I dare say that part of raising awareness is understanding that nowhere in the world is completely free from trafficking.

Without trying start any kind of religious debate, I sincerely wish that we could all recognise that religion is quite irrelevant here- the fact is, children are being subjected to the kind of treatment that none of us would ever, ever wish on our own kind, as and regardless of our faith, we all as human beings need to rise to that emergency and without any thought but to bring them to safety.

Once again wonderful article, I will share as often as I can and hope to be able to visit, donate and perhaps contribute in the near future.

      Sandy,

You must have no heart at all. These are kids we're talking about here. But ultimately I think it is ironic you say "God bless our service men and women." Should God not be the Vietnamese? Should God not be with all children? Maybe you ought to think twice before you condemn others and ask God to bless America in the same sentence.

Sandy, I am sorry you lost your brother in Vietnam. You should educate yourself of the war root cause and how Uncle Sam got America involved. Please don't educate yourself with Uncle Sam's propaganda literature. Your hatred is nothing more than a reflection of your stupidity.

About your sons, there is no military draft. They joined the military on their own choice just as everyone else who choose their employer. No, don't expect me to thank them or you for fighting for my freedom. As an American I do not see our servicemen and women fighting for American freedom other than those Americans who have big stock holding in our military industrial complex and our big oil corporates. I hope that your sons come home safe and sound and for you to live your life with a little less hatred in your heart.

There, all those who called them self leaders, are heartless, uneducated, immoral, selfish, un-patriotic, and most of all inhumane. As we all are struggling with our lives here, but lets not forget the people who are being supressed by all those idiots. Lets take a stand, lets raise our voice. Together we will make a different, not only for them, but also for us and our children and the children of our children. I don't know why the site won't let me respond to ME, who I am responding to, but... You're too young and uninformed to know what happened and you sound as if you're one of those who, apparently, thinks the US is always in the wrong. The people the American troops were fighting in South Vietnam were an invading force. The South Vietnamese people did not want to be communists and before we were in the country were fighting the invading North Vietnamese military which sprung from a totalitarian society that could order its citizens to do what their leaders wanted which was conquer South Vietnam. North Vietnam could have lived peacefully, but instead it chose war against a neighbor that simply wanted to be left alone. We didn't invade North Vietnam, which would have ended the war, because we didn't want to spread the war even further by involving China, as had happened when North Korea, another war-loving totalitarian society, invaded South Korea and we kicked their ass back to the Chinese border and had 2 million Chinese soldiers cross into North Korea. Vietnam simply wasn't worth another mess like that – and the South Vietnamese, a relatively free people, proved not motivated enough to oppose the totalitarian North that later proved its military nature by invading Cambodia to end the reign of the crazy Pol Pot. The US policy behind the war was containment of communism. It was such a ridiculous system that didn't accord with human nature (asking motivated people to work hard and give the product of their labor to people who didn't work hard – from each according to his ability, to each according to his need) that it was destined to self-destruct sooner or later (and, having lasted something less than 100 years, turned out to be sooner in the grand scheme of things). So wherever it attempted to expand, we opposed it which gave us quite a number of small conflicts without the need for an all out war against communism which would have been the disaster of nuclear war. We won – everywhere.

*Fight for the communist paradise? They fought to have their own freedom. Not to be the slave of another country. The same thing the USA did against the UK! In fact, Ho Chi Minh was a fan of the USA, appealed to the USA for help only to be squished because he was Asian! You seem quite knowledgeable of history, the mistake the USA made was not helping VN be an independent! Instead we tried to force our ideals down another country’s throat using a gun!

It is amazing that more than three decades already passed and there are still people singing the song about us, the USA, went to Vietnam for the sake of the South Vietnamese people's freedom.
Ho Chi Minh was America's allied during WWII. He appealed to the TRUMAN to recognize VN as a sovereign nation and to NOT AID THE FRENCH to come back and re-installed colonial slavery.
Truman rejected Ho's plea and foot 100 percent French war expenses to occupy Vietnam under the excuse/allegation that Ho was a communist agent working for China and Soviet Union. The true reason was simply because Washington preferred another European power to be dominant in the region to secure America's military foot print.
The South Vietnamese govt, headed by Ngo Dinh Diem, was a puppet govt. Diem was in a monastery in New Jersey when Senator Mike Mansfield found him and chose him to head the Saigon puppet govt.
Unfortunately, once in power, Diem started talking back at Washington instead of being an obedient puppet. Kennedy therefore gave the CIA the nod to take him down. Diem and his brother Nhu were overthrown by ARVN generals and were murdered by garroting inside an armored personnel carrier in Cho Lon.

We went there, not because of freedom or liberty. We went there simply because we were ignorant of the country, its culture and the politics. We went there because we were trying to exercise the "containment policy". The South Vietnamese people were merely pawns.

South Vietnam fell in April 1975. In 1979 Vietnam engaged a border war against China. It spoke loudly Vietnam desired to be an independent nation, not a slave of France, United States or China.
Immediately after the war ended in 1975, Vietnam tried to normalize diplomatic relations with the west, that included the USA. However, we still sore over the bloody nose and did not let bygone be bygone until Clinton came to the White House.

I am a Viet vet and had visited Vietnam twice after the war. I met and had cordial talks with former NVA vets. I did not encounter the kind of hatred I see in many of my fellow Americans such as Sandy. I asked one NVA vet how he felt toward me, an American vet. His response was " you did your job, fighting for your country. I did my job, fighting against you for the sake of my homeland. I lost my two sons in combat fighting against you. However, war is over, it is the past, you are always welcomed here as a friend/visitor but we are always ready to fight you again if you come as an occupier." We drank good beers and had good conversations.

These are ethic Cambodians living in Vietnam. It is unlikely for the government of Vietnam or Cambodia to take any notice. It is sad that these people were able to escape death by the Khmer Rouge but suffer a fate that is no better, again due to humanity's neglect.

For those "patriotic" Americans – these people were not participants of the Vietnam War conflict. In fact, they were the victims.

Remember 58,000 thousands American died but according to some estimates 4 millions Vietnamese died in the senseless conflict borned of ideological differences which was exploited by those people who sought power on both sides of the Pacific. Who was the bad guy here? I don't know. I do know that 4 millions and 58, 000 of somebody's sons, daughters, mothers, fathers – good people died in a senselss conflict.

I get so angry when reporters feel the need to make excuses for people who are doing something deeply evil...just because those people are desperately poor and uneducated. Those who sell their children are not ignorant of the likely outcome of the sale. They may TELL themselves they are sending the child to a better life, but it's ridiculous to pretend that they don't know. It's been going on for generations.

Communism is the reason? Really? It seems like there are a lot of poor people living in the wonderfully rich capitalist USA. A land filled with drug addicts, theft, corruption, and a non-ending list of wrongs. In addition, the USA (where nothing goes wrong) is the new location for traffickers to ship their slaves! Don’t completely blame the system of government.

As stated in this Article, these children are ethic Cambodian groups whose grandparents/parents fled from the Brutal Khmer Rogue regime in 1970s. I wonder about the nationality and citizenship of these children. As I can see in the articles, the children may not have a permanent Vietnamese citizen registry in Vietnam. If possible, the Catalyst for Change should contact with Vietnamese local government in order to ask for Vietnamese citizen registry for these children and their parents. With Vietnamese citizenship registration, these children and their parents may enjoy some much more favorable conditions for education, basic medical supply and other benefits from policies of eradicating hunger and reducing poverty launched Vietnamese government.

@Pham Thi Minh Phuong: You're either clueless of what's going on in Vietnam or a daughter/son of vietnamese officials speading propaganda here. There's no such thing as "favorable conditions for education, basic medical supply" in Vietnam. It doesn't matter if you're vietnamese citizens or not, there're many places like this in vietnam. The vietnamese communist government can careless about it's own citizens, all they care is their pockets, stealing money, robbing it's own citizens.

They are ethnic Khmer living in Vietnam. So they are Vietnamese not Cambodian because they were born in Vietnam. Throughout the region (Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Kampuchea, and Vietnam) there are different ethnic groups living on the borders that are denied citizenship because of their ethnicity. Monarchies, Capitalist and Communist governments (with USA backing) all equally discriminate against these people. Until they have a permanent home with an address, they cannot apply for citizenship.
If you really dig a little into that history – the USA backed the Khmer Rouge (KR) and their genocide because the KR were at war with Communist Vietnamese.

"Some for as little as $100." Is that even necessary? Is ANY amount of money adequate to sell children to predators? $1...
$1,000,000 ... $1,000,000,000,000... It makes no difference. It's wrong. The phrase suggests that if a predator was paying a larger sum of money it would be less offensive.

I pray communism will be toppled and extinguished from this earth. Caroline was a born-again Christian and her works will be rewarded eternally in heaven. As Jesus is the only Way and Absolute Truth, she is demonstrating her faith by building the schools to help these children out of poverty. I'm in tears and pray that all the unfortunate children anywhere in the world to know Jesus is their Savior and provider. Because only in Him, there will be peace and joy.

        @NoJesusFreaks

You're wrong now and you will be wrong when you're dead. But keep on with your humanistic approach because of God's wrath for unbelievers are coming.

        From Hebrews 3:7-15

        Be Faithful
7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says:

“Today, if you will hear His voice,
8 Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
In the day of trial in the wilderness,
9 Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me,
And saw My works forty years.
10 Therefore I was angry with that generation,
And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart,
And they have not known My ways.’
11 So I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest.’”[b]

12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; 13 but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, 15 while it is said:

“Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”[c]

Be forewarned and repent of your sins and come to the true Savior, Jesus Christ before it's too late.

Its obvious that there isnt a recyling sorting recover system set up. I see that as a great oppourtunity for someone who understands that system. A plant could be built, the sanatation seperated from the living, my god, babies in that.Anyways, back to topic. Modernization done properly could solve the baby selling by offering security in an industry that obviously needs workers anyhow. Play the cards dealt to you with some genuine help?

But then again, it's America! Laziness runs rampant; just look at the overwhelming majority of morbidly obese people. Lazy body, lazy brain!! It is a discrace to all humanity that this stuff goes on and we will all live with the long lasting effects of it as long as it continues, regardless of where or how far away it is. This is a small world.

I don't want to generalize, however it seems people have lost their compassion. We are not talking about the adults here; the school was not built for the adults, but for the children that rely on the adults for food, safety and education. This will end when the children know they have options...options change just about every dire situation. Instead of criticizing...come up with a better solution, or just any solution. It is easy to sit in judgment. It is easy to make hateful, salacious, ignorant and hurtful comments. Apparently it is courageous this day in age to have compassion….just sad.

You can actually see this footage and pictures of these children suffering and then ask WHY someone would choose to adopt a child from a THIRD WORLD COUNTRY? ??? There are ENOUGH children in need of homes all over this world and it doesn't make them any less worthy just because they were NOT born in the US! They are not fashion accessories they are CHILDREN, those that are adoptable are ORPHANS in need. Have u ever gone to a orphanage in a country like Vietnam? Have u ever held a malnorished child starved for food and human affection? I HAVE and the second u do it will change ur life forever. Maybe u should try it and u might develop some sort of compassion towards these children. Yes there are children in need here in the US and if that is where ur heart lies then I urge u to adopt as many as u can but DONT judge those of us that feel there is a GREATER need elsewhere in this world and have put our actions where our mouth is and have actually done something about it. Tell me again HOW MANY children in NEED IN THE US you have adopted?

THere is something called self control and there is something called self defence. Women are stronger than men and if they want, they can disengage their so called rapist. Because the simplistic means you're so passionate about came from a very, very simple mind. It's because of you that there are words like uneducated, ignorant, stupidity. Please think, and I know this is a stretch for you, if it is so simple, why hasn't it been implemented? Wait, let me catch your train of thought here..."Everyone that has the power to do something is stupid, and I, Aaron, the smartest person on this earth, have a solution but no one is listening to me. And because I am a great thinker, that's what I do, I think, and don't really need to take any kind of actions, even though my solution to end such devastation is soooo simple. As a matter of fact, if given a chance I will bring this up to the United Nations and offer up my great solution. And while am at it, I will suggest for the United Nation Security Council that in order to end world tyrany, we should look to all races that have had tyrants in the past, and sterilized all of those women, just so we can ensure world peace."

I think the world has always been a horrible place since the begining of time. Everyone had to fight to survive in caveman days. Today in 2012 it is heartwrenching to see that this can still exist. It makes me sick to see rich people complain about being taxed. Or people who waste thier money buying too many name brand purses, clothes, electronics or even the Pairs Hiltons in the world who just don't care. In our great USA we do have people who eat out of trash cans and live like animals. So the world should take notice and do something

I hope these poor kids get a chance. It's sad that multi-million dollar resorts, hotels, and high end homes are being built all over Vietnam but its government still allows some of its citizens to live this way. Half of the foreigners that visit these poor Asian countries are predators looking to molest these kids. We like to think the world is a nicer place in this century, but the truth is the weak are still horribly abused just as they always have been. A Roman slave two thousand years ago was generally treated a lot better than these kids.

Until people are able to be free, self sufecient, and have access to all birth control- poverty and child rape will exist.
It is nice to help people but this will continue to be an on going problem- especially in poverty nations and if they have nothing to keep them out of poverty- they become dependant on aid. Much like most os north Africa and this aid has enabled the people not to find their own solutions. We must do what jesus said, though i am an non beleiver- teach a person how to fish and they feed themselves for a lifetime. Charty is fine but we have to help people have sustainable income. A whole country in Africa stopped taking aid and are now prospering. It was on PBS.

Poverty / political oppression are two causes. It is a hard fact of life for one to say that there is no end, maybe just relief for a lucky few.

Not that many Canadian's spend much time there but a few tourist go through when returning or going to the more resort island of Dau Phu Quoc. What is most frustrating about many of these countries is that even when bringing in donated charitable goods, there is often complications created where bribes are expected. I would imagine without this more help could be given and business assistance provided. Or joint ventures started by other than the largest corporations. Have others found the same ?

He went over to meet his bride, the sister said that she wanted to come to America and he wanted a wife so he flew to Vietnam to meet her. She had just turned 19 years old. They have been married for about 3 years now and live in Nebraska. I understand that she wanted to come to America and he wanted a wife, but to me I value that marriage is based on love and to me you should love a person before you marry.

One of the truly sad portions of this story is the unwarranted bias; as if most, and maybe all of these parents sell their children to "give them a better life." It's a fallacy, and a bad attempt at a "feel good after we make you feel bad" news story. For the 99% of the individuals that comment on stories like this, who haven't ever been exposed to extreme poverty or even been to another country, you likely don't, won't or can't comprehend that humans are inherently evil. It's much easier to be selfish, angry, and nefarious then it is good and caring. Most of these parents sell their kids to lessen their personal burden, while hoping against hope that they'll make enough money off of them to buy themselves food for the next week. This may be unwanted commentary, but it's a fact, and one I see often in my work. The parents are the roots of this issue.

I'm amazed by the ignorance of some of the comments on this post. These are children, who are having their youth stolen from them. Also we can uplift and disallow the parents from choosing the sale of their children as the only option. Meaning that even if we must put cash in their hands and books and learning before the parents and children so that they are enlightened out of oppression and against the predators, we in fact can enlighten the earth with education and fearlessness and eternal choice : we even far away can exert ourselves to destroy the liberties of the predators , they are the walking vice; we need to save the children from them and collapse the circle that is foul.

Wait, why is it that women should be sterilized, but not men? Even if I agreed with your argument (which I don't), you get far more bang for your buck by sterilizing men, who can impregnate several women at a time than you can by sterilizing women who can have only 1 or 2 (and very rarely more) children in any 9-month period.

That does not change no matter what you believe... but for those of us who dare call ourselves Christians, let this be a warning to us! Mark 10: 13-29. How much are you giving of your own money and time to help the poor? I have been outside this country and seen this with my own eyes... WE ARE THE RICH. Do you worship your wealth or your God? Will you give it up to go and help these little ones? Will you stop at only words?

I feel for these kids, I really do, but their are poor people around the world. It is better to help the poor in a more stable area then in places like this. The poor in better areas will have a much higher chance, probably, of making something of themselves, and giving more back to society. That has a tricle down effect that helps the poor in the worse areas. Anyway, that is why I don't donate to humans anyway, I'm more of a preserve nature kinda guy.

The complete and utter sadness of the world is that Professional Atheletes make more money in a year than many of us will see in our lives, so ask them to save the 3rd world, not us average Americans. CNN isn't talking about anything new....these issues have been there forever. Why should we help ourselves (Americans) first? Sorry, Lorax and Aaron, I actually only agreed with your position that the ultra rich are primarily responsible for helping the poor and causing their impoverishment. Also I really don't know why any grown man who never out grew playing with a ball should be rewarded as if he is a demigod. Or why the vast numbers of those who are in human services are so overworked and paid so poorly. I also don't know why the vast number of American's feel we can not drop enough bombs on other parts of the world but then manage to have one excuse after another why we should not feed the hungry and clothe the naked and teach someone how to fish. BTW, I'm an atheist but I have read the bible and many of the other "one and only TRULY inspired books of God." And while you can find in any of them passages telling someone that a particular God is the one who can beat up anyone else God...if that is all your God is good for then you can put me down as eternally at war with Him/Her/It.

My understanding of the beginning: The Supreme Power-God created this earth for all human beings, with many nations, with people of different races, religions and languages with rules to live by -'do unto others as you would have them do unto you'. I think this is where Satan took over and became the 'Ruler of this World'. Now all we have is man's inhumanity to man. Politics and religion have brought war after war, different nations fighting for power, money and conquest of the citizens of that nation. The leaders of all nations have become greedy, corrupt, power hungry and soulless. The basic rules of religion, all religion's were supposed to be good, but have been invaded by leaders that are like the leaders of the nation's, wanting power, riches and the largest congregation of members to support their Church. There really isn't a lot of real Christianity left in the world, if there was we would have some many bad things happening to the helpless children and poor disenfranchised people of the world. My heart and soul hurts for the sadness I see in the eyes of children. My God give them a life with a joyful heart in the hereafter. That will be their only salvation.

The tragedy of poverty in Vietnam lingers on. To this day, I recall the plight and visual images of orphaned children (many of them Amerasian) struggling to get by with even the most basic of necessities (shelter, food and clothing), let alone much needed medical care. That was during the war and this article serves only to inform that for many (especially innocent children), life in Southeast Asia is not much (if any) better now than it was when I witnessed it first hand some forty plus years ago. Why most of comments are about politics (boring). Don't comment about VIetnam as if you were Vietnamese or were living in Vietnam, pls. If anyone of you want to talk or discuss anything about VN, come to my country first and see what is going on. Dont sit in anywhere in the world but VN and discuss about my beloved country like that. Poverty now happens in anywhere in the world even in the US. Are you sure that no poor people in the US or any developed countries? Are you sure that all of people in developed countries satisfied 100% with their governments? Instead of discussing politics or telling history stories, do something more useful please. Most of you are not VNese, therefore, you dont understand our culture fully and for sure you dont know why we fought for the reunion of North and South, so again pls do not discuss about the people you dont know. We should respect the history instead of pointing out who won because nobody could change anything now. Welcome to Vietnam to see what is going on here. We overcame the scars of war already and now are trying to have a better life for us and our next generation. ^_^ Co 1 so ban cung co the la nguoi Vietnam nhung hinh nhu dang bat man voi che do. I have been living in Vietnam for 22 years, I have my own company and employ around 50 Vietnamese. In addition, my wife is Vietnamese and we have a few children.

During the past 22 years, I have seen a society develop from a respectful, hard working and honest culture to a society that is based on greed, dishonesty and focussing on me, myself and I. It has been sad to watch the norms and values of a great country and people to be destroyed so quickly.

The new Vietnam shows up in many different ways regarding daily life and doing business in Vietnam.
Regarding doing business, the long-term business relationships are generally based on corruption. As long as you are paying money under the table to get the contracts one has a relationship. Unfortunately, when the Vietnamese can find another company in Vietnam to pay more money under the table, the relationship is finished. In addition, corruption has been increasing during the past 22 years and escalating during the past 5 years. This is my experience and this is a topic that is discussed in the Vietnamese press and English language newspapers etc etc in Vietnam on a daily basis. This has put a bad taste in the mouths of the Vietnamese who see other Vietnamese driving around in fancy cars, buying houses and villas etc etc. They want it too and they want it now not tomorrow. And they don't want to work for it.

This corruption, dishonesty etc also affects how the Vietnamese see each other. The Vietnamese do not trust other Vietnamese. The only people they trust are family members. The Vietnamese are also not interested in developing long-term relationships unless they are benefitting from it personally. In addition, most Vietnamese friendships are very superficial compared to the relationships in the west. The Vietnamese are generally incapable of seeing a customer beyond today. What can I get from that business reaction now, little or no thinking about tomorrow. Therefore, the Vietnamese will cheat, if they can, another person. Most of it is Vietnamese with other Vietnamese. For example, when a person from Saigon travels to Hanoi, they are being ripped off from the minute they land in the capital. Ask the Vietnamese.
If the Vietnamese are going to steal and cheat each other, how do you think they will treat a tourist?
Probably worse because they know that this person will not be returning and they don't care. They want everything today. I have some sympathy concerning this ideology of the Vietnamese because it was probably derived from war time when they had to find food to feed their children today and not really knowing the future.

Regarding misunderstanding the Vietnamese due to a language issue, possibly but probably not. I speak more Vietnamese on a daily basis than English. In addition, if one understands the Vietnamese communication system, one will find that the Viets are indirect communicators. Therefore, even if they know that you understand their Vietnamese, they will still say disrespectful things directly to you using indirect language and they also use body language to disrespect people.

The Vietnamese culture is complex but if you take the time to study and evaluate it, in particular, the new norms and values of the society, it will be highly disturbing.

First, the US supported Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge by supporting them in the United Nations as the legitimate govt of Cambodia, in addition, by sending weapons and food through Thailand to support them in the war against the Cambodian govt that was supported by Vietnam.. Furthermore, you forgot to include the USA bombing of Cambodia which killed about 500,000 people. Ignorance is Bliss!

All kinds of flames with only a few comments alluding to the basic problem of World poverty. It is sheer madness to think that impoverishment can be ended when less than 1% of the world's population "owns" more than the bottom 60%. And that disproportionate wealth keeps becoming more and more concentrated with the inevitable result of more and more senseless poverty and the inevitable crime that the poor end up committing primarily against themselves. I would love to know who goes to these child brothels because I'll bet you my life it is no one on welfare. America has more weapons of mass destruction than any other 2 countries on the face of the Earth and more people in prison than any dictatorship on the planet. Gingrich, a Catholic, recently said, "We should kill all of America's enemies." I'm really not sure if he included in that list both himself and all of the CEO's of the military industrial complex that produces so many WMD for profit like Do a google for the images of that and the cost in money and human misery that causes to assure that we are not only, and rightfully so, the most hated country in the World but utterly devoid of all spiritual values fit for a Nation deserving to rule...even its own toxic dump of hatred.

Good job to Natalie Allen for this awakening coverage....great effort by the Catalyst Organization....one suggestion...what we are dealing here is more than the need for education, instead, we need to instill awareness and give these kids the audacity to hope for more in life......therefore, i suggest to help these kids to get accustomed to the idea of an internet. Providing an access to internet is gonna help them have a vision beyond what they see currently! This method of outreach was tried out in some rural parts of India by National Geography with amazing results. Just a thought!

In the program it is stated that there is no word in Vietnamese for 'seesaw'. What a load of rubbish. It's in my Viet-English dictionary and my Vietnamese wife tells me the same. It took me10 seconds to find it. It's "bap benh" for those who want to know. If the program can't even get this right I worry about some of the other material presented.

Of course if Americans spoke English they would no it is called a 'seesaw' not a 'teetertotter" or what ever they call it then they wouldn't have this problem.

Lets face it. Vietnam is still a poor country with limited resources so has to concentrate on its own citizens.

I agree It's great what foreign volunteers are doing but it's not representative of Vietnam.

One wonders why the Cambodians are still in Vietnam if they escaped the Pol Pot regime which was overthrown with Vietnamese help when noone else was interested decades ago. Maybe they should go home and help in the rebuiding of their own country rather than living on a rubbish dump in the Mekong Delta. Thousands of Vietnamese soldiers lost their lives fighting in Cambodia so the Cambodian people would no longer suffer under the Pol Pot regime.

Also "Phuc" is not pronounced the same way as the English "F" word so if people actually pronounced it correctly there'd be no problem.

WAKE UP David! These people have been living in Vietnam for decades and are Vietnamese in reality. They speak Vietnamese, their names are Vietnamese and they know nothing about Cambodia. Also what are they going to do in Cambodia? They have no skills or education, dont speak the language etc. I guess you would prefer that they live in a garbage dump in Cambodia. Go read a book!

To those of you who are asking why is this mother having 9 children and in poverty, would you please think before you speak? First of all, the mothers have never had education, they don't know how to read, they don't know how to write, they don't know what birth control is. And you know why they have 9 children? did you read how they earn their money? Yeah, by sorting recyclable items, that means they think they the more children they have, the better their work efficiency will be when their children are grown up, and they will have something to fall back on when they're old. There is no such thing as a "social security", or "welfare" or anything like that in Vietnam, put yourself in their shoes, can't read, can't write and see if you would do anything differently. Please open your brain before you open your mouth.

LET ME TELL ALL YOU A REALLY STORY HERE:

I'm a Vietnammese and I have lived here from when I was born until now. So, maybe I also understand it clearly and espcially that I know clearly about life and government in Viet Nam. If you want to know why there are so many poors lke that, you just need to ask my government ...-:}} ...., they understand more than anyone because.......!

If someone ask a Vietnammese that: DO YOU LOVE YOUR COUNTRY? => Almost people aslo say YES

But if someone ask that : DO YOU LOVE YOUR GOVERNMENT ? => Almost people will say " NEVER "

And then maybe all you will feel it's opposite, but it's truth ! And reason is all Vietnammese also understand, no need to explain more

Everyone only can live once in this world but maybe it will take hundreds years or thousands years is Vietnammese can live really like a humman. Look, even a student graduated or staff who worked for a long time, all they also cant live good. There are very many people have to live in a room with 3 m2, there are only a few of them can live comfortable. But almost all people here is workers and u also know how they live worse

Opposite with all civilians, our government or State company have a good life although salary who they are paid very slow . What it is so fun ! -:)))

Sometimes I think maybe Uncle Ho Chi Minh who fighted for freedom of Viet Nam will be very sad and disappointed now because his civilians have to live a life which is very difficult and poor. I hope there will are the second Ho Chi Minh appear to change or support all bad systems of Viet Nam. I dont care who he/she is or where come from or which country, I just care they can help civilians , it's not ways like government do.

I dont know that i can live until that day or not . -)) !

    Valentino, your compassion is heartwarming.

First, remove your head from that dark cavernous smelly place you keep it and learnsome facts. To say that an entire group of countries are "bragging" over how good their economies are is like saying trees are bragging about how green their leaves are. Countries can't brag. People can. Just like people can help others in need, or they can be like you.

OK, put your head back up where it was. It's not doing anyone any good out here anyway.

      June 28, 2012 at 11:22 am | Reply
      • Sự thật là vậy sao

Catalyst?

It would appear that once an individual has assumed the Cole Haan Nike air they actually don t want to go back to other trade names of footwear. This is because there is such a leading divergence that is mentioned when wearing the Nike air shoes. Next, begin to improve upon your past mistakes. Put all extra money towards paying off the account with the highest interest, and only pay the minimum on all other debts..A jam jar with a screw-on lid, or a small, wide-topped bottle will do. Don't wash the receptacle out with soap, but sterilise it as best you can by rinsing several times with boiling water (but do not use boiling water in glass, use baby equipment sterilising tablets instead, then rinse out with generous amounts of very hot water). jordan space jams

Why do you need to know so many when we have electronic interpreters in 2012 and all speak English?

Jim, are you saying that American's live in a sheltered bubble from the rest of the world, and have no idea what third world countries are like? If so, I agree!!

    Why bash Americans? Democracy?
How aware of the rest of the world do you think these poor people are?
And truly, WHY care -when the ONLY right solution to poverty, BIRTH CONTROL, is taboo?
-to be blamed? forced to watch? guilted for adapting to a sustainable 2.1 birthrate? for going to a Starbucks?

Moderators, if you have a problem with Fuc will you accept "Nam ou ah yee ah da Phuc." It is a rather untranslatable Buddhist blessing in Vietnamese which basically means, "May the Buddha hold you forever and help you attain Enlightenment." And while I don't know how to spell it in Vietnamese I give you my word that the notorious four letter Anglo Saxon "f" syllable is actually the Vietnamese sacred word for Buddha or God. And it really wouldn't hurt any people in this country to learn that what they see of another language or when they hear it spoken doesn't necessarily mean what they think it means.

Saigonjohn, Thanks for the reply. Of course the vast majority of Americans will go out of their way to not even do a google translation for what you said because we have such a wonderful education system that those same American's not only pride themselves on ONLY speaking English but even that not very well. But hey, when you have more weapons than any other country on the planet to show how badly you want peace and to bring Christianity and the Bible and sterilization to every other country whether they want it or not...you can also easily convince yourself that you are in addition to NOT being the bully in the fight but that you are doing the right thing as well. May Phat, or at least what ever there might be, bless you.

Correction... The correction should be made... It is not the United Nations for the Refugees... It is The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
