U.S. President Barack Obama has declared January 2012 as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month.
The presidential proclamation says: "Human trafficking endangers the lives of millions of people around the world, and it is a crime that knows no borders. Trafficking networks operate both domestically and transnationally, and although abuses disproportionally affect women and girls, the victims of this ongoing global tragedy are men, women, and children of all ages.
"Around the world, we are monitoring the progress of governments in combating trafficking while supporting programs aimed at its eradication. From forced labor and debt bondage to forced commercial sexual exploitation and involuntary domestic servitude, human trafficking leaves no country untouched.
"With this knowledge, we rededicate ourselves to forging robust international partnerships that strengthen global anti-trafficking efforts, and to confronting traffickers here at home."

There are more enforcement officers along the border since Obama has been president than ever. There have also been a record number of deporations under his watch. In otherwords, he is doing more to secure our borders than any president in history.

Although this is an important issue, I would prefer to see a national congress do your job month, or maybe a national reduce the deficit month, or how about a national (you fill in the blank) month.
Are you really so naive and ignorant that you do not see how many people human trafficking affects?! If human trafficking can be ended, small-businesses and non-profits can be started by those helped and the economy will become more dynamic and sustainable with less illegal activity and more participants. It is not an overnight process but when people like you are so ignorant and focused on themselves, nothing can be accomplished.
It is an act of TREASON by Obama to legalize the dumping of 12 million illegal aliens and their naturalized children into this economy and let the unemployed American citizens pick up the tab for their crimes, healthcare and children's education.

The area of al qaida sleeper 6 unit and its larger City Buffalo had opted for non-timely services for one former HUD employee who had left job due to her inability to think at a higher level (head injury) and the churches had called her a Prophet as she went to seek help from a praying situation, they had hoped (at best & this is not good for the working part of ones life) she would need the drug/alcohol rehab services w/counseling solely and they would eventually get to her... I did see al qaida go by before 911 day, Arafat was illegally on USA soil and in open space in Niagara Falls downtown area/s and most recent sightings have been top 10 terrorists wanted who have gone by un-acknowledged by me at the time and then Ahmadinejad in 2009 & twice. Therefore, the actual reality of our environment has changed; yet it seems that the people had hoped for different services to be rendered & they were paid in advance of time to show up in local area & to me and to act as such. Weird..no terrorists but just counseling suggestions and for drugs/alcohol I don't consume.
My students and I have been working on fighting trafficking for the past six years. We have started an organization called Breaking the Chain Through Education. We have been working in the Lake Volta region of Ghana. We are building a school for a village who agreed to release all of the trafficked children in the village. We are happy to see that CNN is taking on this important topic.
Breaking the chain through Education seems a programme for children in Ghana. If a chain can be broken, what will happen to those children in the US, who are not permitted to fall behind as President Obama once declared two years ago? If the society has become internationalized, what doe trafficking children really mean to the national leaders?
Evan, I applaude you and your students for your work. Trafficking/modern slavery (even when conducted abroad) affects us nationally. (Trafficking is a trans-national issues , and thereby by default has a ripple affect on the US.) Unfortunately, this dynamic is difficult for some to grasp. How anyone can make such horrible jokes about human trafficking is beyond me. Human Trafficking on a global standard is estimated at 36 billion .. yes I said BILLION dollars a year! Over 27 Million... yes I said Million woman, children and men a trafficked against their will in the SLAVE TRADE! Yes Modern Day Slavery exists people. Here in the great USA it is growing at a record speed and guess what... the main target.... AMERICAN WOMAN AND GIRLS. Not foreigners... our own sisters... mothers.... daughters.... and we let it happen because we think it can't happen here in the USA. I started a charity in Buffalo New York called United Hands of Hope House for DOMESTIC female survivors of Human Trafficking. United Hands of Hope House is the first safe house in Western New York to try and help the victims. Our youngest AMERICAN victim is 12 year old.... our oldest victim is 62! Open your eyes and stop making jokes about a serious crisis that needs national attention. Thank you Obama for recognizing this issue.

I haven't seen the movie yet. But my first thought when I read about it was terpty much as Mona's ~ I've read much on the slave trade still going on in the world. I came across this article in my surfing for my post on child pron and Rust-Tierney yesterday. We have put an end to legalized slavery in this country. Other countries have not. So it's still happening in this country as those who are bought in other countries are sold here.
