Hopes for better lives lead to slavery in U.S.
Editor's note: This is part of a series on the CNN Freedom Project on domestic servitude. Read more about some in domestic servitude who are so desperate to escape, they take their own lives. And get an update on the nanny in domestic servitude who suffered extensive burns when, she said, a Gadhafi relative poured boiling water on her.
(CNN) – One was sold by her impoverished parents, the other willingly left her family to become a nanny. But both found years of their lives turned to domestic servitude before finally finding freedom.
CNN's Martin Savidge tells the story of Isabel. Her mother sold her into slavery at around age 7 to a Taiwanese family who later moved to the United States in an upscale southern California neighborhood.
So as other children went to school, Isabel cooked and cleaned. Her bedroom was the garage, her bed the floor. Her food - whatever the family didn't want, often spoiled or soured. And there were the beatings, she says, often with a spatula and once, when her owner accused her of drinking a cup of tea, a toilet bowl brush.
Isabel finally met someone who helped her escape and is now in her 20s and trying to learn what many her age have already mastered: driving a car, ordering at a restaurant, understanding money. No criminal charges were brought against the family who brought Isabel to the U.S. from Taiwan. But she has settled a civil lawsuit with that family and is no longer in touch with them. CNN's Gena Somra reports on Laome, who was 17 in Nigeria when she thought she was getting an education in the U.S. in exchange for becoming a nanny for a wealthy Nigerian American woman, Bidemi Bello. Instead, she says, she had instead become a slave. Bello, Laome says, instilled that fear in her right from the beginning, abusing her almost every day.
She later escaped with the help of friends, and Bello was brought to trial. Found guilty of human trafficking, Bello faces 11 years behind bars. After that, she will be deported back to Nigeria.
For Laome, she says that with the trial behind her, she is finally free.

It was an exciting, and satisfying experience. So much that I wanted to do it again. And so we acted again. And thats when

I saw this report about the young girl from Taiwan who had been sold by her parents to a family that came to live in the USA, and still the slavery continued, which still exists in the USA. How could this family get into the USA with a young child that was not theirs, and what happened to this family now living in the USA...NO MENTION in the report about this either, they should be prosecuted and removed from the USA, but perhaps they had money so as to bribe corrupt officials, which is common in the USA....George
It is common for those kind of domestic slaves to be "adopted" by the family who has them, so when they moved to the states, she probably moved legally with them as an adopted daughter. Once in the states, and freed, there was little or no proof of her internment, so she couldn't bring criminal charges against her (essentially the court only saw her as a child who didn't want to do "chores") and without concrete proof of the beatings, there's not much they could do here either.
So, instead of bringing a case they couldn't win against the family, the woman's lawyers probably recommended to her to file a civil suit instead (which she did) and that way she at least received some compensation for her time and is now free to pursue her life. It's unfortunate, but that's the way the court system works– innocent until PROVEN guilty, and without concrete evidence, there was no proof. At least she is free to live her life now.
There is also the fact that many states have cut back on their court systems because of budget cuts, to the point that some states would take years for any trial. She probably brought the civil suit because at least it might help her get some schooling. At her age, she needs lots of schooling or she won't make it. I do hope that these people are deported; just the fact that there is no record of this young woman in the school system should be a clue that she was abused and not allowed to be educated; PROVEN by the fact that she struggles to count money.
In her case, though, she could at least prove that she never attended school.

George: We tried to get Isabel's case prosecuted but there were many factors that prevented us from moving forward. I'm glad she is doing well.

The minimum wage in Salvador is $5.56/day for apparel assembly which is $2.56 more per day than the average agricultural worker there. The minimum wage in Haiti is $1.73/day. Your information is outdated and incorrect. Companies may pay the bare minimum but they're not dipping under the legally required minimum wage. Of course labor laws aren't great there yet so I'm sure there are abuses, let's focus on those instead of outdated information.

Not that I am defending Disney but I remember in College writing a paper in regards to this subject. It is easy to say that Disney pays workers in foreign countries little to no money but in comparison to other jobs in those countries the pay is usually higher. I will reitterate I am not defending them but the day that person quits there would be 100 more people lined up for that job. The people in India that most think are morons stealing are jobs are on the same situation. The majority if not all are college educated and had to go through a vigorous interview process to get the job. Check out Tom Friedman, he has written many things on the subject.

Susan, it isn't the lower-priced goods, but the tremendous mark-up. Every time you walk into a store with shelves packed with goods, think a minute. Those goods sit on the shelves a bit before they are sold, and it is the TIME that costs so much. To pay workers, employers take out loans, which are paid back with INTEREST for all the TIME that the goods sit on the shelves. I worked in such a loan company 30 years ago; all items have this problem: "net 30 days," "net 60 days," "net 90 days." It COSTS. Cut out the lovely store (I include everything from boutique to giant discount store or upscale department store) and these workers might actually be able to earn a little more. Remember the catalog stores, and how much money they made for awhile? When people stopped shopping that way, it was kind of a shame, because those stores sold union (?!?) made items, made in the USA. Now nobody can afford to, because stuff sits on retail shelves all over America, which shoppers insist must look just so on the shelves or they won't buy. And look at most towns in America: filled with duplicate stores; where do you think all that stuff comes from?

Employees are force to work 12~18 hours per day, sometimes even in weekend, but without overtime pay. Companies force their employees to sign the agreement - “I’m willing to work for my company without overtime pay.â€
Two people died because of working too hard in my company, but there’re much more than two in the company called “HTCâ€. So many HTC workers died that people say there’s not only sweat but blood in those cell phones.
And how about iPhone? The component in iPhone is made in Taiwan. And the CEO of that component company tells his employees “If you are in good health, that means you are not working hard enough.â€
That’s the life in Taiwan. No one say we’re value, and we are so afraid to be a loser.

Oh Please! Though admittedly the Republican Party can at times be "tone deaf" when it comes to the concerns of the poor, many, many charities are run by churches in this country and no conservative that I know (including myself) would advocate the enslavement of people or even the "browbeating" of individuals who do not work hard enough. There is another side to the coin, however: Many people simply do not want to work and abuse social welfare programs, which is infuriating to those of us who are working, paying taxes and struggling to make ends meet. As someone who lived in a very poor neighborhood when attending graduate school, I have experienced such abuse of welfare, Social Security, SSI, etc. firsthand.
I asked around in the company where I worked. Everybody had health problems, almost all brought on by the conditions they were working (in the USA). Some people were told that they shouldn't have hobbies because it would take away some energy; the hobbies were not that difficult or long lasting, just an hour of exercise a couple days a week, which people should do for health. The higher-paid jobs had health problems too. Whether paid for overtime or not, everybody worked overtime and was worn out. But when people are fired or laid off, they are worse, because then they don't even get health insurance, so when they get sick, they just die.

To Isabel- I can see why you love your mother so much still. My dad wanted to sell me but my mother fought tooth and nail. My family was so incredibly poor, and that if I had been sold,-I would have been a help for my family. I wound up working like a slave so the littler ones can get by.

If a family comes to the U.S. with (false) papers for a child, how do they avoid enrolling that child in a school system? Wouldn't the truant officers be after the family? Wouldn't the family have to prove that the child had learned an equivalent education through testing if "home schooled?" This has to be the greatest example of injustice in the world today. Children being bought and sold into slavery should not be happening in this day and age. The only way that this will ever stop is if the guilty parties are sent to prison for many years. I think 25 years in prison should be the minimum and in most cases, life in prison. The victims have been given a life sentence, so their abusers should suffer the same.

I lived and worked in 17 countries from 1984 to 1992 including many third world country. I have seen with my own eyes the poverty. I don't know how anyone could sell their child, however I am not judging the parents as much as the abusers. I am sure that when these parents sell their children they are led to believe that they will be given a better life, The real crimes are commited by the people that buy these children and then use and abuse them and treat them as property. Give rights to women and girls, and populations go down to manageable levels. It's been proven. In some of the places mentioned, girls are married at very young ages, expected to have ten kids, and then there isn't enough food, so maybe some kids are sold. Give the girls rights and education, and family sizes are much smaller.
I just want to be clear that I think that the parents are victims too. They are obviously not knowingly selling their children into slavery and abuse. They are doing it because they believe their children will have a better life.

I am very disturbed that no charges were brought against the people who abused Isabel. If there is insufficient evidence for slavery,how about truancy or child abuse? Child abuse is easily proven. This child received no education: neither in the public schools or home-schooled. Children have a right to an education in America. This is a no-brainer; why can't the legal system figure this out, are they protecting this family? Are they diplomats? Business owners? Paid off everybody in the state? She might not be able to show bruises, but unless she is mentally disabled, her lack of education is proof positive that she was not cared for by her "adoptive" family. Yes, well, interestingly, a similar thing happened to me, only I wasn't sold into it, I was born into it. My parents decided I would be the family servant (in fact I was called "the little maid.") and used regular whippings and beatings to keep me at my tasks. I did get to attend school, but only because they knew that do keep me out would bring the attention of child services. But evenings, and weekends, I was serving a family of seven with cooking, cleaning, ironing, etc, while my parents sat in front of the television. Everyone at school – teachers, counselors, etc – knew the situation and about the beatings. It was accepted, though, that short of murder, a parent could do anything they wanted to a child. But parents beating children is legal and common in the US. If a parent wants to enslave a child, they can do it with impunity. This woman's tormentors were able to do what they did because children ARE slaves. If beating children were outlawed, they could not have gotten by with as much, nor could my parents.

The report makes it sound like the US is guilty, when in reality, it is the ways of people in ither countries that is at the heart of the issue. Real US citizens helped these people gain their freedom, proving once again that America and its citizens are still the greatest force for good in the world.
I agree that most people in the US have their heart in the right place. But immigration and deportation laws make it hard for people to come forward. What about the lady that everybody knows is a slave but would be deported back to Africa if anybody told? She would be in a much worse place. If she could be freed and take a more dignified job here, that would be much better, although the last few years there are so many Americans out of work that is a difficult subject too. But I'm sure that most Americans really would come forward and free any slaves they heard of if they felt that it would be in the best interest of those slaves. However, ANY child in this situation is not in danger of deportation, and would benefit by people reporting on it. My grandmother was sponsored by a family in Chicago in the early 1900's, and was their maid until she married my grandfather(and became HIS maid).She worked 6 day a week with Sundays off for church,and weekly stipend of $5 a week.Don't believe she was abused or anything,and was given an education. The civil lawsuit part irked me because it shows there is no criminal prosecution.They should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for kidnapping and physical abuse. If they are citizens, sentence should be life with no parole. Do the research and facts. If she slept in a garage she would have gotten carbon monoxide poisoning and died. Many home owners have their garages turned into bedrooms, so she basically had the biggest room in the house.
I grew up in a foster home since I was 5, and I did many chores cleaning, and then later cooking. When I turned 8 started doing more manual intensive labor work. If I didn't obey I’d get beat with a wooden paddle with holes in it. It only takes one long duration of multiple whippings to be obedient.
Fast forward to today, I am a responsible person who puts my life in order by prioritizing and that's first by paying bills, and everything else is second.
Note to the wise in the big cities if you don't work in a big building then you are a person living in a big city working for the person in the big building, so don't complain if you work at star bucks, or deliver fast food, do your job and shut up or ship out. Please do not follow Gerry's advice of moving to smaller cities. There is no work in my smaller city, or rural areas around it, and people are moving from here... to the big cities, or anywhere they think they can get a job. The article said she filed a civil case, so as long as she fought back legally she should be okay. I wish her luck, and welcome her to America. Sorry that the possible welfare system didn't check up on her adoptive family. My guess would be that a theory that rich people probably don't fall under the radar of the welfare department if you’re a child in a wealthy family. I know that the key is assumption is the failure by welfare department, but what about teachers?
I actually ended up going to a possible adoption home after I left my foster home, so I started fighting with kids at school during recess. The teacher noticed my changed behavior and popped me a question as to asking if everything was alright at home, and I told her I was being abused, so the teacher called welfare department of child services and had my case looked at.
In a psychology course a teacher would learn the small signs of either acting out, or being complete quiet or shy. These signs should alert the teacher while the Taiwanese girl was growing up at school or in the community to where she was.
The Penn State case is a prime example leading others to come out now. Hopefully the victims will be vindicated, and the victimizer brought to justice.

My husband has cancer but still works a full time job. His pain killers are not very effective. For high school students to feed up two slaves may be a way to misleading the relationship between the parents and their only one child, while the latter is much more like some pet in the family rather than any child servant.
