Director: We can change the world

A powerful, new documentary film depicting the horrifying and dangerous practices of human trafficking and modern slavery on a global scale airs this weekend on CNN.

Oscar-nominated director Robert Bilheimer says the movie could be key to unlocking public awareness and calls for action.

"People do not recoil from this. They are angered by it and horrified by it. I think it's genuinely possible that we can move the dime on this, that we can put this in the forefront of the public consciousness. That's all you need," he said.

Filmed on five continents over four years, "Not My Life" shows survivors and anti-traffickers with dignity and compassion, and depicts the unspeakable practices of traffickers.

"Not My Life" features inspiring testimony from survivors; depictions of trafficking, exploitation, and slavery in all parts of the world including forced labor in Africa, street begging and garbage picking in India, sexual trafficking in the United States and Southeast Asia, and various forms of child enslavement and abuse in both North and South America.

Bilheimer said: "The potential of "Not My Life" is in its timing – in that it's a time when all these anti-traffickers and law enforcement and government people are coming together, and then there are things like the CNN Freedom Project.

"I think the ground is fertile, and I think "Not My Life" really does have an exceptional opportunity to push to that proverbial tipping point.

"If we are successful in getting this film before the eyes of the millions we are trying for, and if we do make it accessible, then it can become viral, and that may be this one time we can create an example of how a film, literally can change the world."

While acknowledging that trafficking and slavery are universal crimes, affecting millions of human beings all over the world, "Not My Life" zeroes in on the fact that the vast majority of trafficking and slavery victims are children.

This fundamental truth raises profound questions about the very nature of our civilization, says Bilheimer, who was nominated for an Oscar for his anti-Apartheid "Cry of Reason" documentary.

"What kind of society cannibalizes its own children? Can we do these sorts of things on such a large scale and still call ourselves human or civilized?" he asks.

And one leading face of the anti-Apartheid movement, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, offers an answer. In "Not My Life" he observes: "Each one of us has the capacity to become a saint."

Wouldn't it make sense to air it on all the CNN station and air it online so that it could be more accessible? Seems like CNN is going about this a bit half-heartedly.

Reply to those who watch the clip......When your big oil/mining firms come to bribe our governments to buys the oil field for cheap, that is equivalent to putting the whole country into Slavery. I wish CNN will publish those things and stop these NGOs looking for money all over. If you understand he language the man standing next to the child in the short clip speaking, you will notice that these children are being forced to do this clip. Most foreign NGOs in Africa, are just enriching themselves and using aid as a disguise.

I have been to Ghana many times including the region in this clip. I have never seen this army of sullen children who don't want to play. Children work in Ghana. Not necessarily a horrible thing. If you want to change it, fine. But stop calling it "slavery" and stop projecting these misleading images of abused children. kzs

I have also spent time in Ghana and while there are some rare stories of children being kidnapped and forced to work in the cocoa bean plantations along the Ivory coast border everyone I spoke with about thought it was rumor used to disparage against one of the local tribes in that area. Ghana has been independent since the 50's and does not tolerate foreigners taking advantage of their people, i would be as skeptical as our friend Kwame!

first things first I am African, from Eritrea born in Asmara. secondly what I was saying is that it is not only a problem in Ghana. it is all over the continent of Africa (happy now) they are taken from there homes in raids by other tribes yes and sold to arabs, who then sell them to the highest bidder( so not forced by parents idiot) this is a very serious issue that is still going on now. they are sent to Europe mainly England and also the the middle East nations, to work as housekeepers and nannies and told if they leave or seek help their family would be KILLED. They are also forced to to manual labor in mines and other such duties. so please do now speak with such ignorance and do not assume I am ignorant just because you are unaware of something that is happening out side of your precious bubble.

Ok, Yaya. I'm African too and I certainly appreciate you informing us on what is happening in Eritrea. But Ghana is not Eritrea. This clip was not about Arabs or children being sent against their will to Europe and the ME. This clip was about youth labor in Southeastern Ghana. And I am questioning the accuracy of what the film is depicting in that specific region.

you know I am so sick and tired of fellow African brothers and sisters. REFUSING to join together. can you imagine the force we could be in the world if we unite together??? there is no slavery going on in Eritrea that I know of now used to be in the 80's but not anymore since the war. I meant all over Africa as a whole. no particular place but YES it is happening. and it should be made known and given notice... everyone knows about what is going on in Mexico/south america/ and the east European nations.. but NO ONE is speaking out about what is going on in the mother land.

        Dear Kwame,

I also live in Ghana and the problem is real. Parents sending their children to fishermen to get some training and learn a profession. But instead the kids are exploited as you can see in the video.
This is happening now in our country!

One of the first problems with fixing slavery in the world is, getting people to believe that it still exist! DENIAL won't fix the problem. Making people do things and they don't receive a salary for it, is SLAVERY!!! Beating, raping, maiming and abusing victims is not just a "normal day at the office" for civilized individuals.

There is a big difference between child slavery and child labor, or children helping their own parents' trade/work. We are quite familiar with the slavery situation in the Lake Volta region of Ghana. We're leaving in 3 weeks to build a school there for children who have been rescued from the horrors of child slavery. Instead of denying it exists, why not join us and make a difference?

Well part of the solution is to no just send money and food. You have to change it from the top down. That is why what has worked better is to set up micro economy's there. Something self substaining and marketable to others. Also if this place has most of the minerals.. ie diamonds, gold , oil. Who is stealing it. Give them a better piece of the pie. Not nessary to have wages like the west .. but give them living wages and have obama go over there and push for shovel ready jogs. He just shovels it here. the US should not be everyone's Teet to fix everyone.

An often-cited statistic is that there are more slaves now than there were during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. This is likely true but misleading. While there are more people enslaved, there are also far more people alive today. Because of this, the number of people is more even though the percentage of the world's populaation enslaved is actually far lower. Though obviously we should still fight hard to end slavery altogether.

Its easy to look at something from the outside and criticize it. I am from Ghana, and yes there are children who unfortunately have to work for their livelihood- there are those who are given to rich relatives as house help while their school is paid for, although these situations are not ideal, the alternate is much much worse. Ghana doe snot have a government with funds to take care of all its orphans, it does not have an established foster care system- but there are ways that the existing system can be regulated to protect the children while ensuring that they are still taken care of- educationally, physically, emotionally etc.
We need to stop trying to impose western fixes on other countries- not all countries are set up like the U.S, not all countries have the resources that the U.S has, and most importantly, they do not have the history /background that led to the current status of the Child Welfare System in the U.S

The guilt ridden producer gave a good effort in trying to put a white face on Americas human trafficking situation, unfortunately for him the facts say otherwise. Thanks to illegal aliens Phoenix Az has the highest rates of human trafficking / kidnapping in the US,, and is second only to Mexico City for highest rate in all of N. America.
The 'whites as oppressor' narrative must be maintained.

DO THESE ALARM-SOUNDERS ACTUALLY WANT ANYBODY TO HELP OUT AND STOP THIS??? No. They don't. They want you to take these issues into your psyche and spit them out from your wallet. That's it.

They enslaved back in the day when everthing was based on tribalism, they sold millions of these tribes into slavery to the Arab, Jew, and Christian, and now they still practice it generations after Lincoln. CNN doesn't allow any comments that point out their shoddy journalism by people that live in these areas and deal with these issues every day. Bottom line: Most NGO's are evil, they create and perpetuate problems that don't exist for there own economic survival and well being. This special will raise millions for the NGO's and do nothing for those truly in need of help. Way to go CNN.

THERE IS ESTIMATED THAT ONGOING GENOCIDE TREND WILL CONTINUE TO GO ON FOR AT LEAST ANOTHER 50 YEARS IF NOT DESTROYED(is completed only 30% so far) AND IS ONLY MATTER OF TIME WHEN YOU ARE NEXT IN LINE FOR THE SAKE OF MULTICULTURALISM(TERRORISM)...

911 WAS CREATED FOR PEOPLE TO WAKE UP(deliberately by CIA)....HOWEVER, WAKE UP EITHER WHAT IS TRUTH(sanity) OR WAKE UP TO LIES(insanity = with what your self elected governments have brainwashed you when forcefully jobless/persecuted....therefore, I want you to think about "WAKE UP" when watching next time ALEX JONES = CIA)

WHEN YOU WAKE UP, I WANT YOU TO WAKE TO YOURSELF AND NOT TO SOMEONE ELSE'S DREAM (ZIONIST/COMMUNIST/LIBERAL DREAM CATCHERS/THIEFS, WHO PLOTTED 911 TO WAKE YOU AFTERWARDS WITH ECONOMIC OPPRESSION IN A WORLD OF LIES !!!)

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT TRUTH IS !!? WHATEVER YOU WERE BORN IS WHAT YOU ARE(truth therefore) AND FOR WHATEVER REASONS YOU HAVE CHANGED(distorted yourself) SINCE 9/11 IS WHAT YOU ARE NOT !!!

IS IT INDEPENDENCE THAT WE CELEBRATE OR DEPENDENCE (what are your credit card bills or alimony saying about it) !!? HOW IS YOUR DIABETES AND LOST MARRIAGES !!? FORECLOSURES AND JOB SEARCH !!? THAT IS THE QUESTION TO BE OR NOT TO BE !!! IS IT LAND OF THE FREE OR STATE OF TERROR AGAINST OWN WHITE POPULATION !!? IT IS TIME TO LET THEM KNOW WHAT COLOR ARE THE STRIPES ON OUR STAR SPANGLED BANNER !!! TIME TO DETERMINE WHOSE INDEPENDENCE/AMERICA, WE CELEBRATE TODAY(who wants to erase us and denies us the right to exist) !!! IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW WHOM WE ADDRESS WITH "PRESIDENT" (STOP HUMILIATING YOURSELF) !!!

YES , WE CAN..YES , WE CAN..WE WILL WIN IN WAR ON TERROR (30 whities or what are terrorists will never come back alive due to Afghanistan helicopter crash...thank you lord..aamen).

Whitie is fighting war on terrorism just to come home and be pronounced as terrorist...turned in Timothy, jobless, homeless ..YESSS, WE CAN....FISH CAN & TENT CITY USA CAN...GABBY OPENED HER EYES CAN(psycho Tucson)

ALL THESE JUST SO YOU CAN CLICK AGAIN ON ELECTRONIC VOTING MACHINES WHICH CAN BE ALL CONTROLLED(AND ARE CONTROLLED OR COMPUTER OPERATED) FROM A SINGLE CELLULAR PHONE(for entire USA)...JUST SO YOU CAN CHOSE AGAIN BETWEEN WHATEVER WAS ALREADY CHOSEN FOR YOU TO CHOOSE FROM BY ZIONIST/JEWISH LOBBY IN WASHINGTON DC.

Don't worry O(s)bama, you have just saved lots of Dollars in your DEBT DEALS(DEAD & ILL) as those America best (Navy Seals) would also grew older and then you already know how it goes !!!

EVEN IF IRAQ WOULD BE WAR FOR OIL, VETERANS WOULDN'T NEVER EVER HAVE TO BE HOMELESS PEOPLE THE WAY THEY ARE AND NOR WOULD OUR PEOPLE DIE ALLOVER THE PLACE THEY DO AND TO VERY TODAY(never ending war story)...BECAUSE EVEN IF WAR WAS FOR THE SAKE OF MONEY, MONEY SHOULD BE USED FOR AMERICAN CITIZENS AND NOT WHAT THE CASE IS OR AGAINST WHITES(66 YEARS AFTER WWII, THEY HAVE EATEN YOU IN AND OUT LIKE IN GERMANY PRIOR TO WWII...all your sacrifice during WWII was for nothing and the worse is yet to come in America)...

Genocide of whites??? So what was happening when eventually blacks were freed from slavery in 1865... with very little in the way of education as a whole because they were never allowed to learn. So finally freed they had to fend for themselves. And when allowed to vote in their districts whites moved away (because blacks were the majority and would vote in people of color) along with all their tax dollars (whites had better education or some educations were as blacks had little or none so whites had better jobs ). So minorities were left with poor schools.. next comes segregation not even allowed to go to a better school forced to stay in the poorly funded colored only schools.. segregation ends in 1964... 1964 1964. SO FINALLY minorities are allowed to have the same opportunities as the whites. However, in the meantime after all those years and years of mistreatment by local governments a lot of blacks have to deal with the posttraumatic syndrome of being treated like second-class citizen's animals less than whites. So the government says, 'hey... we are sooo sorry.' (Democrats) we'll give you a handout to get you on your feet... food stamps (hardly enough to feed your children, so they maintain good mental growth, and of course, you won't be able to afford fruits and veggies...)we'll even throw in some crappy bottom of the barrel healthcare...(get sick, and you are sure to die cause you will not get the medication you require on your health insurance plan) and some really cheap public housing... but here is the catch... Your men are not allowed to live in the house... yes for your own good we will check the closets and makes sure of this. Even send a spy to watch your house from time to time. You let your men in, and we take away the help... Yes, perhaps it would be better for a man to live in the household to raise his children, so they do not grow up to be hood rats, and you would have a better shot at completing higher education and possibly keeping a job. But hey WE KNOW BETTER THAN YOU.... you are just a black woman... so less than us (say the self-righteous Democrats) and believe us this is so much better than giving you a voucher to get an education maybe learn a trade.. so much better and here are some drugs to make you swallow all this BS down a little easier.

This subject is truly a horrible story, BUT the country of Communist China has enslaved whole nations. The magnitude of Mr.Robert B.'s film is tiny potatoes comparet to the story of slavery in Tibet, for example. If he wants to be a hero of oppressed and enslaved people, he should take his cameras where the slavery occurs on the magniture of whole former countries in Southern and Western now-China.

Commie China is all the more horrid because it is now a modern country compared to, say, African ones, and Commie China has leaders who should know better and who have the power to release the enslaved. Instead the current supreme leader of Communist China displayed his power by killing and jailing Tibetans... thus showing the ruling Party that he is the man to take the job of enslaving the whole of Commie China.

CNN,,,, lets see you report THAT story, but you never will with your sub-HQ office in Commie China!

Communist China has enslaved more people by magnitude of millions compared to this "Director's" discovery of a few, horridly treated people.

CNN: the story of slavery is in your back yard... take the new train from your Commie China Headquarters to Tibet and film some real and massive slavery!

The love of money, the yawning gap between the rich and the poor'the monumental gulf between rural and urban centres and existence of social AIDS i.e.Acquired Integrity Deficiency Syndrome are factors which fuel modern-day-slavery.CNN has begun a good FIGHT against this multi-faceted EVIL.Genuinely supported by all and sundry the battle can be won and the world made a etter place to live.

No human deserves to be treated unkindly. Yes, there are children who have to help support their families. That is a very sad truth. But there are many children who are being robbed of a child hood and stolen from their families.
Why spend your time arguing here over who is right or who has a better point?
Shouldn't that time and energy go into something more productive? From what i have read, all here are very smart individuals who coudl do their bit to change things. even if it was for 1 child.
I am trying to work on it myself, as a mother, i would not want my children to ever need to live in fear. and if i can make the life of 1 child safe, i would be a happier person.
and it does not matter which country or continent you are from. no child is more valuable than another.
