9 girls rescued from India's red light district

Editor's Note: In the recent documentary "Nepal's Stolen Children," CNN followed actress Demi Moore and 2010 CNN Hero of the Year Anuradha Koirala as they try to rescue women and girls from forced prostitution, especially girls trafficked from Nepal into India.

A few days after the documentary aired, Indian police raided a brothel in New Delhi's red light district, rescuing nine girls. Rescue efforts like this are becoming more common in India as police begin to make it a priority.

By Mallika Kapur and Sumnima Udas, CNN

The suspected manager of a New Delhi brothel where police recently rescued several underage girls has been charged with kidnapping, rape and forcing girls into prostitution, a police officer said Tuesday.

One of the girls rescued is 10 years old, said Triveni Acharya, the president of the Mumbai-based Rescue Foundation, an anti-trafficking group that tipped off police.

The 38-year-old suspect has been charged with kidnapping, the kidnapping of minors, forced prostitution, rape and operating a brothel, Station House Officer Surinder Kaur said. Under Indian law, prostitution is legal, but profiting from another person's prostitution is not.

The woman has been jailed under India's Immoral Traffic Prevention Act. Kaur said she could not release the woman's name but described her as an Indian citizen and a former prostitute herself.

Investigators have 90 days to present their case to a court, Kaur said.

Meanwhile, Kaur said she hopes to arrest the brothel's owner soon. Brothel owners are rarely on-site and are typically hard to track down, Acharya said.

Five of the nine girls taken from the brothel have been confirmed to be underage, and tests are pending on the remaining four, Kaur said.

Three are Indian, and the remaining six are from Nepal - the source of a steady supply of sex slaves for the brothels of Delhi and Mumbai, many of whom are forced into prostitution by traffickers.

Great, now they can go to a 5 star hotel for a celebratory dinner and tell each other how wonderful they are.

Meanwhile – there are so very many more kids suffering.

Any fool can find such things in an evening in Mumbai or Delhi!

Get a grip!!! It's a step in the right direction! they saved some girls and in the past few years, scores more.... What is it that you want exactly ?? A perfect world overnight? THIS IS PROGRESS.. Be HAPPY about that.... Cup half empty for you obviously.... I see it as half full in this instance.... I'm happy for those little girls... yes I wish there were more rescued, but it's an entrenched underworld... Not so easy to dig out crime that widespread.

Sad to say some parents have sold their young daughters for money. A man raping a 10 yr old should receive the maximum punishment as he is a rapist and a peophiile. Women over 18 can legally do as they please, as in Las Vegas, it would be their choice. Forcing someone into the sex slave trade is illegal but as stated it's nearly impossible to find the brothel's owner......what will happen....they will find another place to set up "business" and it will continue.
They can't save all the under age girls. but saving some is a start.

Men need sex and sometimes we dont get it and need to.Its like food, going without food for days is unhealthy.Different cultures should not be viewed as our own.As you know, the age of consent is 16 and I am fine with that.Prostitution should be legalized, brothels should be for women over 16 and sex should not be stigmatized. We men need sex and will NEVER live without it no matter how many hurdles society places on us

Is this a step in the right direction? This is in the red light district, so there are many brothels doing the same thing; why did the police choose to save the girls from this particular brothel? What did this woman do to piss off the police? And what happens to the girls once they are "saved"? Are they put back on the streets? At this point, they only know how to make a living through prostitution. So unless they are given a safe home, an education, and a chance at escaping prostitution, they weren't "saved" at all, and this is just a big show so that we can temporarily feel good about ourselves.

I like your comment... As the story goes... Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work.

One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch up.

As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean.

He came closer still and called out "Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?"

The young man paused, looked up, and replied "Throwing starfish into the ocean."

"I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" asked the somewhat startled wise man.

To this, the young man replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die."

Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, "But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can't possibly make a difference!"

At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, "It made a difference for that one."

On the dot. People who profit from this and specificaly people who have sex with under aged girls should be publicly shamed and hanged to death. Then you will see how quickly this crime will end. Until the demand side is addressed, there will be always supply.
Also, pass a law to take away the illeagl money that can be used in rehabilitating the rescued girls.

Did you even read the story? There is no mention anywhere of slavery, beatings, or rape. in fact all the girls said they were there voluntarily to make a living, and refused to cooperate with the police. You are creating facts to fit into your political agenda! You don't like prostitution because it makes sex easier to obtain, challenging the traditional life styles of housewives being supported by men.

You call that decent living??? Seriously?? I take it you are part of the scum who attends these brothels. This is not a life for anyone more or less a child. If an adult chooses it then each their own but a child has no say. All because of the perverts out there whether it be male or female are looking for it out of delusional, sick minds. At least 9 were saved and hopefully many more in the future but I can tell you this, the world is changing and unfortunatley the end times are around the corner. Better be prepared people.

They were forced into the job. It wasn't their choice. Now, they have freedom. An intrinsic part of freedom is hope and possibility. Something all living beings need. "Only 9" is more than 8. And, way more than 0. In fact, 9 is one zillion if YOU are one of the nine. It's a step in the right direction. My respect goes out to all who participated and I hope the case goes well against the kidnapper. Demi, I'm glad you used your star power for positive change in the lives of the less fortunate. Kudos!

Wow Vince. Do you open your mouth and say things like that in real life too? The next time you feel the need to air thoughts like that, be sure to do so in front of a woman–preferably one with daughters of her own. I'm sure I'll read about the results in the news.

Did you not get the part about them being underage–and did you skim over the part about the one who was only ten? And while you're rereading (because by now I'm sure–or hope–that you feel stupid), do some more reading about what happens to prostitutes in developing country–their life expectancy, the violence they live with, and the diseases they both catch and pass on. And then, assuming you're not a pedophile (and I'd prefer to think of you as someone who simply doesn't think before he speaks), ask yourself if you know any preteens who you would relegate to this lifestyle.

@Vince In India, girl's are taken from their homes, or bought/sold by their parents because they don't have any money, and they think that is the only way to make money. Especially when the other option is working in a factory for less than minimum wage. AND the article didn't have to mention rape, beatings, or slavery, we pretty much know that's going on with grown men having sex with 14-16 yr. old girls. Come on! Your comment was from the lowest level of ignorance.

Wow, Vince, you're an absolute idiot. It must be a lovely world inside of your head where people always tell the truth and coercion doesn't exist. Can you please educate yourself about rape and then get back to us. I know you think that every woman is clamoring to get a piece of what you got in your pants but it's just simply not true. Prostitution in any country is disturbing because it is ALWAYS perpetuated by issues of gender, race, and class. These women know that if they speak out against their captors loved-ones somewhere will be hurt so they stay quiet and they lie. What they're hoping is that the pain in their face will communicate more to the person asking the questions than the words that they're saying. But then, I guess if you were the one asking the questions then that brothel would still be stealing 10 year old girls who say that "everything is fine".

        August 3, 2011 at 3:13 pm |

Vince I suggest you read "Infections and Inequalities: The Modern Plagues" by Paul Farmer. Then tell me about how great the life is of GIRLS sold into prostitution! Not only is it a world they can't get out of because they owe so much money from being bought, they are beaten, raped (yes prostitutes can get raped), have back alley abortions from many pregnancies, most also contract STDs and many contract AIDS. Now tell me how this is decent labor?! Why don't you move there and become a prostitute yourself and make a decent living without hard labor?!

I was in a small village in Nepal when a group of mafia thugs came with their guns and tried to kidnap all the girls between the ages of 7 and 12. Vince, you have no idea what you're talking about. My team successfully negotiated their release and I'm happy to say that some of the girls we rescued are still friends of mine today. The thugs were going to take their trophies, rape them and then sell them in Calcutta. Many of the girls are told their families are being held hostage and will be killed if they don't go along. Ggggg if you're such a supporter of prostitution, why don't you go and be one in India? See how you like it. I'd suggest bringing some medication, you'll probably need it within days. Actually, you might want a cyanide pill too.

how can one possibly consider the continuous rape of a child a means of "making a living?". What if these girls were boys? Would subjecting a young boy to rape multiple times a day be a reasonable way to make a living?

Are you kidding??? A ten year old being raped? You think you are doing her a favor by leaving her there? Did you not hear the story about Dreamworld (or whatever they are called) that got exposed yesterday and 75+ arrests of child porn/abuse. There was a chat room that only allowed people to submit videos if it was of children being raped and beaten and crying. Yes, it is worth taking that little girl from being raped daily. WTF?

Dean and Aubrie gave a pretty good summary of what those girls were saved from; Vince, you have no idea what you're talking about. And incidentally, the fact that someone is 18 or older does not mean that a life of sexual bondage is any more "voluntary" than these girls; "Never on a Sunday" was a movie; in real life the sex trade is nothing like that for women (or men for that matter) of any age.

@Lance – Seriously dude – you should shut up if you dont know what you are talking about. Yes India is filthy , there is lack of education and yes there are starving homeless people in mumbai, but isnt that true for any big city? Lets see – New York – Check!!!! London – Check!!! Every place has its goods and its evils, no place is perfect. Child prostitution is a problem in India and it is also a significant problem through out the world!!! And as this article proves Indians are doing something about it – it may be little but then it is still progress!!! And it is not just the wealthy and the middle class that go to the west – it is also the poor (on scholarships for education and migrant jobs) and the west is not the only place – we also go to the east (aka singapore and australia) – everyone does the best they can to improve their lives and that of their children and families. What have you ever done for the poor and homeless in your country?? You are the one who is a SICKO and from your talks/thoughts a racist!!!

What's truly heartbreaking is that it takes national exposure via a well-publicized documentary to get the Indian government to act, otherwise it appears they can't be bothered. It's outrageous. Equally outrageous are the off-hand remarks from other posters about "making a living." For the love of God, many of these people are CHILDREN.

I am thankful they were rescued. It is appauling that prostitution is legal in areas there and involving such young girls/boys. This is a sad statement of how low our societies have fallen...its about time men stop being perverts and regarding nothing – the worth of a woman soul, but their own satisfaction. I reach out to those women and girls who have been caught in this web of human trafficking..There is HOPE:http://stephaniesprayercorner.blogspot.com/

Russ must have been to India. It is a crap hole. I guess the rescued girls will now go on unemployment, so they can feed themselves. In countries like India, Thailand, and Burma prostitution is often the only game in town; of course the USA will rescue nine girls and solve the issue – NOT. This is just part of the "holier than thou" attitude of a Christian nation run by morons who know nothing of how other cultures live. Whores have been big business for thousands of years, especially for guys who marry spoiled, shallow, clinging, worthless American girls. Every town in the US has a house of ill repute or at least a well know address where you can get laid for a few bucks without having to disturb your petty, fat, bitchy American wife. A friend married a Thai woman who was attending college here in California; hot, smart, petite, intelligent, and a sex goddess – notice it is a Thai woman not an American bitch.

BRB, your bitterness must come from being rejected by a woman, probably any woman with common sense. Gosh, I wonder why....could it be your loser attitude, your inability to please a woman or perhaps your overall nasty way of relating to human beings of any kind? I don't care if prostitution of kidnapped children is a cultural thing – it's wrong. I'd venture it's men who think it's cultural, not the ruined children. As has been mentioned, the United States had nothing to do with this – it's a Mumbai group that rescued them.

I would suggest some therapy for your misogynistic attitude and your anger problems, followed by an education.

That is surely true but don't forget it isn't just female infanticide by a few, it is very common in india to kill new borns by SELECTIVE infanticide as well by finding out that it is a female in a woman's womb and performing selective abortion against a female child. It is sad!!! India must end it now or we must pose a sanction on it.

      Hello Lance..
Here are some of the facts... US has about 12% of the people under proverty... and in recent years it is growing very rapidly.... India on the other hand have its proverty rate reduced to about 25% compared to what it used to be..

Talking about Prositution... can you please google with some special keyword and see how many sites you see that is based in USA vs India... you should note that 90% of the sites are from USA and about 20% of them are child pross..

Above all... more than 95% of the India's have sex with one man or women compared to 3, 4, 5 or 6 ....in some west country u r more particular

Clean your thrash before you talk about other countries... remember ... there are a growing number of outsiders working in India too...

It is GREAT to see some action against this crime, but the numbers of children ( estimated by CNN in their last article ) 10 to 30 million around the world make the one child brothel here and there a token to appease those of us who are outraged by the practice. The measure of a people is how they treat their young and elderly. Humanity falls far short on both counts. ( The policies of our governments the world wide sure do) The amount of money, as per INTERPOL at 28 billion US dollars a year, the graft and un-written policies to leave such operations alone. The non reporting of details ( 60 to 80 thousand girls brought INTO the US every year ) again a statistic from Interpol. Translate to a major change in international policy, and a major step up in International enforcement needed if this tragic practice is to be shut down......

      Lance and Isabella,

you are very selective on your observation. Lance you have already been answered by Chris and he has tried his level best to educate yo on poverty. Now Isabella, your allegations are somewhat true, but your analysis of things is purely due to ignorance or lack of education may be. If Indian men have never seen girls, then tell me why porno materials are so popular in USA, and why Americans rape almost everyday? People travel to other countries to educate themselves, but you came back with a comparison chart with USA. The things you did not see has driven India so far preserving its 5,000+ years culture. And, you are comparing with a 300+ years mixed culture !!!

That tells me that you have not seen higher education classes in US, and obviously comments like yours are a high probability from people with your level of intellect !!!

So next time if you visit India, to see the stuff you could not on your last visit. If not then stay within your current location and enjoy your life, but keep it safe from rapists, murderers, muggers and drug addicts!!!

      Good luck !!!

Oprah Winfrey did a show how the men of Europe and America swarm this country looking for little girls and boys. Yes, a lot of the parents do sell their children but I'm sure they do not know the type of suffering they are going to endure. This is a cruel world and children are at the brunt of it.

Kaka, factually, you are correct, but that was over 100 years ago. Many of the systems you describe have been wiped out over the years in favor of the new democracy that is being violently introduced throughout that part of the Earth, and including many parts of the Middle East. Who knows what future is best for people, and who is to blame?

What gets to me is that our generation and future generations are somehow expected to support the new ways of life being put to the test with very little money, in all of those countries including our own, and perhaps even teach democratic lifestyles to children such as those who are now free of their adult prisons. In my opinion, there is no real set of plans yet, for their economic futures as adults. And besides, unfortunately, there are people who believe, justifiably, that the same democratic lifestyles that created the rescue will ultimately lead people towards the West, where those lifestyles secretly originated, resulting in a vicious cycle. What is business, anyway?

We should, if at all possible, correct the initial interpretations here in the West as what constitutes "trade policy" in favor of answering what it is that we really trade in, and ways to improve our conscientious attitudes about how to prevent certain "human products" from being "overmarginalized" (so says my wife). In my own view, coming from the West, the maintaining and creation (like Brahma and Vishnu, "gods" of maintenance and creation originating from India among the Hindu people) of high-paying jobs there could be a new top priority, among India's "new tech-savvy generation of businesspeople" when it comes to what is considered "progress" civilization-wise, for the benefit of future generations of India's Earth-concerned people. (Does that sound too "green"? It wasn't really meant to).

In fact, I would also like to help, businesswise, in my own country, but, I would need large amounts of pre- and capital funding for such a series of projects, and, perhaps better attention from, and a more positive reception towards the common market for someone who's country is at an international crossroads, reputation-wise. (USA).

First of all, I'm Indian, and it's not a bad place. There are a lot of really progressive, forward-thinking people in India who are APPALLED by such things. Please don't generalize the views of an entire country that way. Yes, poverty is rampant and in lots of places women's rights are an issue. @kaka – WOW!!! you are not just ignorant, but also insolent and a complete narcissist at that – That combination is a really tough find buddy!!! First – the entire breakdown of indian caste system you gave – was SURPRISE – INCORRECT!!!! Secondly – Your definition of Sati i.e. The wife being killed off when the husband dies is SURPRISE incorrect and uneducated!!!

So let me try to eductae you on Indian Culture –
Indian women in the olden ages were so loyal to their husbands that they believed that when the husband died – they should go with him – so as to be united again with him in his next life. I guess this could/would not be understood by you – cause to most people outside of the Indian culture – marriage is a joke – they cant live together in one life, leave alone pray about living together forever!!! Yes this practise did turn evil – when some people pushed the widows to die along with their husbands – against their wishes, but that was India – a century ago. This is no longer a practiced now just like 'Segregation is no longer practiced in US'. Oh and btw – the caste system in India was not that different from the caste system in the west – i.e. Discrimination on the basis of race – So come out anytime you want from under that rock to live in the real world!!!

What are you going to do if you get married and can't orgasm because you don't even know what you like.....It is good to touch yourself and test drive the car before buying so to speak. India is actually one of the worst places in the world for not only prostitution but child prostitution! Estimates are that about 1.2 million children are being used as prostitutes in India! There are approximately 20 million sex workers in India alone. Prostitution is also legal in India. In the U.S. it is illegal in all but one state. The U.S. may lead in a lot of things, but this isn't one of them. Google is your friend.

@IndiaRocks I wondered if you would read this story. The other day you were on the web insisting that the USA is horrible and insinuating that India is dreamland. Well, I guess India is not heaven afterall. There is a huge market in India for child prostitutes. India also has the 3rd highest rate of HIV infection in the world. The country still practices the caste system–while they pretend
not to. Many of the cities are filthy. Dead animals float in the rivers. Cows are evidently more sacred than people. Of course Western countries have their problems, but you can be sure that most everyday people would love to get out of India and live in the West. You can rave all you want against the USA and I'm sure you will–but your raving will not change that fact that on the whole, India has more filthy living conditions per square mile, more disease and more families living in poverty than the US.
Your love of your country is admirable, but don't let it cloud your thinking.

Its beginning of perhaps a new change of attitudes from indian authorities, thats going to combat this ever increasing sexual exploitation in India. If you happen to follow any daily newspapers of India, you'll come to know how horrifying existence of a female person can be,living in any part of India,as the country itself is messed up with multiple problems from all directions.Still, lack of fairness and accountability from the top government officials in India,in their present corruption continued saga, has allowed criminals of all sorts to flourish, with ever increasing
violent crimes against females of any age,for the criminals know they can always manage to slip between the justice systems. The system system is a total joke, filled with suspicious judges and lawyers, each only concerned
with representing a "good show",as suppose to handing out death sentences for all sexual crimes. If you ever wanted to know what a real hypocrisy feels and looks like, you only have to learn more about "India's system of managing itself".The task of bettering their Indian society is immense,so hopefully the rest of authorities in India, will start making some really urgent changes to the severity of the punishments handed down to the all criminals in India.

The authorities have to first clean themselves because it is usually the people in the position of responsibility and power who do the most damage to the Indian society not the petty criminal in the street. These authorities must be ruled with an iron fist before the Indian society can begin to clean itself up.

It is a statistical fact that women are more abusive to children than men. Boys however are not taught to report sexual abuse by women and do not have access to the resources provided to young abused women.

India is making significant progress in the area of women's rights. Kudos to the people who are making a difference. Now go root out corruption from this land of sages and saints. The society must shun the people who are tainted with corruption, shame them, belittle them, hold them accountable, and punish them. The biggest of these despicable thieves happen to be in politics.

Women who are raped should have the legal right to kill those who rape them. They should also be awarded any assets owned by the rapist. BBC did a report some years ago and concluded that the sex slave industry is thriving at over 20 billion dollars per year. Some powerful super rich people are involved in this and that is one of the main reasons that the world "authorities" ignore it for the most part. Legalizing prostitution would have similar effects as those of legalizing drugs – both would be very sensible moves but would significantly reduce the income of some multi-millionaires & billionaires, who are so terribly F'd up that they can't get enough money.

I concur, but you may defect when i tell you that "killing the rapist" is inherrent in the Sharia law unless the woman choses to forgive:

"The punishment for rape in Islam is same as the punishment for zina, which is stoning if the perpetrator is married, and one hundred lashes and banishment for one year if he is not married.

Some scholars also say that he is required to pay a mahr to the woman."

    So unfortunate but so true.

India needs to END FEMALE INFANTICIDE to curb such atrocities against women. Every year in India according to reports, atleast 2 million baby girls are killed because they are not wanted by their family. At this rate there will be no girls left in the nation and there were be more brothels sprawling across India. The Female Infanticide so prevalent in India is possibly due to the nature of Hindu traditions of the "Dowry system" where by the family of a female has to give money to to the groom's family in order that he may marry her. Such a pathetic system!

China has the same problem, there will eventually be an overabundance of males and not enough females. Studies predicted border raids to capture females but that's a bit Hollywood, reality is parents selling unwanted females into sex slavery. But that still does not address the familial problem – who will these males marry to form families if all the females are taken? Who will take care of them in old age? Not the state – their custom is that families take care of the elderly if they can but no families mean no help when the extra males get old. That could lead to a type of warfare.

If the police want to find the brothel owner, follow the money! The manager has to give the earnings to someone or deposit it. The police in some areas are part of the problem, being paid off to look the other way. More than likely the girls parents sold them into slavery – females are like dust in that part of the world. This is a good heads up to those who want to legalize prostitution in America – even when it's legal there are still too many problems. I bet none of the "johns" will face any inquiry. Too many millions of people sliding through life in dire poverty.

Mumbai is progressive and I know that this could be among the plans, but is it definite for these 9 girls? It's easy to say and possibly even do the "rescue" itself and I completely commend that – but these girls are only rescued when they are provided food, water, shelter, and most importantly, an opportunity to eventually become self-sufficient, via education or a job contributing to the main society...I hope that's in Demi Moore's and Anuradha Koirala's plans!

    Also,
Most people routinely fail to recognize anything positive taking place in india. How about some new stories about the anti corruption bill being passed because of the hard work put in by a retired army man in his late 70’s. stories about India’s youth which has more honor students that the United states has students. How about reporting the terror taking place in the mountains of Kashmir and what india is doing about it. lets focus on the positives as well please.

Perhaps someday men will wake up to a world where the women are all gone. Period. Then maybe they will realize the value of women; when they are gone. Then all the men can rape and beat up each other, instead of abusing the opposite sex all the time. All I ever see are stories about female genital mutilation, husbands killing wives, boyfriends killing girlfriends, men raping girls, honor killings of women, and the list goes on. When the women are all gone, then what will the men do?

Well the budget deal is made so CNN is back beating the drums in the War on Sex. But, 10 years old is far too young to be into this....willing or forced. The problem with CNN's definition, and the federal govt's definition, of trafficking is that it does NOT require the elements of force or restraint to meet the definition. Because of this, they make it out to be a huge problem when it is not. Very few cases actually involve force or underage girls. That is not to say it is not a problem because these girls are far too young, but sensationalizing every case of prostitution into slavery or trafficking is misleading and deceptive. Do you opponents of my view point think you can understand that or will you respond with vile comments from a black or white perspective?

Everyone says their religion is the best and correct religion. Everyone says their religion is one of good values and morals, yet these same religions tell you to kill and die for your religion. Some religions even convince their people to kill innocent people. Some religions teach you to suppress your women and use them like tools. Some religions teach you that s.e.x with women is for procreation only yet s.e.x with another man or worse, a young boy, is OK? More wars have been started over religion than any other reason. Religion is bull s.h.i.t. Grow up and start taking charge of your own life. Stop looking to blame others or blame the "evil one". Take responsibility for your own life and your own actions. This goes out to all religions. You people need to take a close look at yourselves before you throw any more stones. Your religion teaches you to be tolerant yet you are the first to judge. Your religions teach you to be hospitable and caring yet you’re the first to hurt. Religion is a manmade tool used to control you.

These people are animals, so they take it however they can get it... Yes, little boys are forced victims too. In many circles they are preferred as they are less "risky"... ie; "priests" in the Catholic church and other self proclaimed religious "leaders".....

I'm sorry I can't remember the exact name of the movie but there is one with Donald Sutherland in a part as head of a legal organization and one of their jurisdictions is human trafficking. It may simply be called, "Trafficked" It is so worth watching altho hard. Girls and women are tricked into going someplace thinking there's a job waiting for them. They come from Europe, Southeast Asia....here in the U.S. the perps prey on run-a-ways.....watch the ads (Craigs' List) flourish in any city that hosts big sports play-offs. What is hard to admit is how any one who shops the porn sites may be directly supporting the traffickers. It is extremely hard to catch them....they move constantly and too often there is no where for the girls to go when they get busted for prostitution....they end up back in the hands of their 'owners'. Some are SO broken, they feel they can't go home. Their lives are stolen. Joyce Meyer's Ministry has a 'safe house' there are others... look up http://www.RunForFreedom.net or dreamagain@USA.com if you want to help these girls.

As an Indian man, I feel obligated to repond to some of the anti-Indian comments here.

Before I do that...I gotta say that if it was up to me, the criminals who are involved in this forced child prostitution ring would be hanged.

Now...to the reader who made a comment that when she went to India, Indian men gawked and stared at her – I say this. I'm sorry that that happened to you, but I hope you will realize that such a thing can happen anywhere and the inconsiderate actions of those men had nothing to do with their ethnicity or their race. Speaking for myself, I can say I've never made a woman feel uncomfortable, and hudreds of millions of decent Indian men can say the same.

As for the rich Indians living it up while their countrymen starve...the same nonsense happens in America and everyhwere else.

How come the Republicans are supporting tax breaks for owners of corporate jets when record numbers of Ameicans are struggling financially?

As an American I agree. Many of us around the world don't have a say in what the powers that be do (yes I vote), but in the end corruption usually wins. However, no matter where we live there is evil, there is disgusting things that happen, and there is good. We cannot say it's the Indians, the Americans, the Muslims, the Christians.....people are people and there are good and bad in every group. How much effort has everyone put on these comments to bash a different society? Isn't there more positive things to be doing?

Oh how awful! These poor girls! I'm 17 and I cant imagine how horrible it would be to be forced to be a prostitute. Seriously, what young woman or girl wants to be forced to sleep all day with nasty old men more than twice their age. It breaks my heart for the little ten-year-old! She was worse off than the rest, because she may not have fully understood sex when she was sent there, and her body was not physically ready for sexual intercourse with a full grown man, therefore her first experiences would have been painful as well as frightening.

More than likely she suffered irrepairable genital damage and had little or no medical attention afterward... I'm sure many suffer from massive infections and worse...... thus why it boggles the mind why men would go to a place like this in the first place. hedonism at it's best....

@Sunflower, you know, you're definitely right. I didn't even consider the fact of her not having medical attention (dumb me!). I'm already in training for the ministry, maybe a good idea would be to set up a mission to rescue girls like this and give them another chance at childhood, but there are so many mistreated children in so many different places, that, even though I'd like to help them all, there's no possible way I could help ALL of them alone.

    Nice bit of fluff, CNN.

Mmmaybe you could work on exposing the things destroying America (illegal immigration, exporting jobs, the rich elite bleeding us dry) so that mmmaybe American cities aren't such ugly slums in a few years and parents don't openly sell 6 year old girls to be used up that way in a few years just for enough $ to be a few paychecks from being homeless versus daily wages away...? But, no. Doubtless you are bought and sold by the Globalist Bankers who've created this filth and misery around the world and long to debase the people who made it possible, the Americans...

I am happy that 9 lives can be saved. Lets maintain our global patriotism here, and the facts. Prostitution is illegal in US. However the other aspect isn't, and that is equivalent in stimulating crime on children. India has come a long way, and the educated public are not the reasons for the above case. However, India is still suffering poverty, unequal wealth distribution. On the other hand if you see Pakistan and other Islamic countries, the educated public too are involved on crimes on woman and children. So whilst this incident should not be used to garner resentment on India, this incident is also proof that things need to change in India.

I hate when CNN posts stories such as these. The population of India is increasing at the rate of between 15 and 18 million people PER YEAR. It is INFINITELY obvious that human life there is so, so cheap that no one cares about 9 little girls having to prostitute themselves from a young age. This is going to keep happening and there are far worst stories than this to report. So please, don't bother describing in unending detail the social decay which is inevitable in all countries where they don't treat human life with the dignity it deserves.

When food supply increases, especially in the third world where having lots of children is so deeply ingrained in their psychology and culture, the number of hungry mouths will increase, and what is the good thereof? If you want to save that 10 year old from prostitution, make sure she isn't born at all if there aren't the resources to support her existence. That's it. Let's not have any more imbecile sentimentality which keeps people being born and having their miserable lives unnecessarily prolonged. Let's have genuine social reforms which will ensure guaranteed results.

This article states that "Five of the nine girls taken from the brothel have been confirmed to be underage".

So, that is to say, five of them were girls; and four of them were not girls... they were women.

And, what is underaged, there? If it is anything like here (18 years), then those women have been women for years by that time. They aren't girls, and if the government changes the legal age to 35, it wouldn't make under-aged 30-year-olds into "girls".

Forced prostitution and rape by kidnapping is a worldwide problem. This happens in USA, all European nations, Russia, South America and most all western nations just as much under the radar as these third world nations in the news. In this time of recession and depression world wide the resources are limited and there is more desperation by people committing terrible crimes selling their own children to criminals. Unless a worldwide effort is made with billions in resources to go after the criminals there cannot be any solution to this problem.

We should not use the tragedy of child prostitution as a proxy for venting our own misandry and misogyny. Most men are responsible, decent people can control themselves and who love the women in their lives dearly. The johns obviously are not. Most women are responsible, decent people who are rightly outraged over this human rights violation. They correctly point out that most such violations are perpetrated by men. Of course, men are more commonly in positions of power and are thus more able to abuse. Lacking the opportunity to do wrong does not prove virtue. There are many women who, when given the opportunity to do wrong, enthusiastically did so.

It's unfortunate that a lot of the commenters are not able to focus on the problem at hand and misguidedly malign a whole race of people.

The problem is the criminals in this racket – and their criminal acts have nothing to do with their being Indian.

Good and bad people are to be found in all races, and Indians , like members of all races, commit crimes.

To the Pakistani gentleman posting virulently anti-indian material, I say this – brother – whether or not you like to admit it, you're really one of us. Sorry pal. You may be a Muslim while I'm a Hindu, but we look the same, we eat the same food, dress the same, and we speak the same language. Hindi and Urdu are basically the same language.

Indians, and really anybody from a third world country that migrates to the US, regardless of how much (or how little) money they come from, are blessed to live in this utopia.

When slumdog millionaire came out, any Indian who has some money (including their beloved amitab bachan) came out and slammed the film writers for unveiling the dirty truth about indias slums. Now, one would think if there were so many 'forward' or 'modern' people in the country, then they would come out and rescue these children from the hell hole they call home. Instead, they gained more popularity and finally became content and forgot about the children after winning an Oscar.

I came from a slum.. the problem is not just a corrupt government, it's a corrupt upper and upper middle class that make the government. The ones that make me laugh are the ones on this forum that sit at home, sip their chai and try to convince themselves their country is mostly filled with 'modern' citizens.

Around the time of the royal wedding, I saw an article online about a young woman and her friend in England, both aristocratic (in fact, the woman is the granddaughter of a British Viceroy of India) who decided to start a business to HELP women in India make a living and help themselves. I will paste info below on how to purchase the inexpensive bag they sell (which I have found makes a wonderful knitting bag). They also sell lovely clothing, beyond my means, unfortunately! But buying a bag helps a little bit...and here's the link to buy the bag. (I've bought one for our daughters and my sister and her daughters - all lucky, free, educated women - just to help women who are not so lucky.)

    http://www.beulahlondon.com/bag.php

    The Story

Natasha’s great-great grandfather, Rufus Isaacs, was Viceroy of India in 1921. Her family has since maintained strong connections with the country. As Marquess of Reading, he was the only Jewish Viceroy from 1921-1926. He was a Liberal appointed by Lloyd George and therefore different from the normal aristocratic appointment. He was responsible for overseeing the Indian Chamber of Princes and in favour of guiding India towards self government.

Natasha’s family history prompted her first visit to India a few years ago and so began her love affair with the country. She was joined by Lavinia on a life changing journey in October 2009.

With a heart to help women who had been caught up in the sex trade, Natasha and Lavinia spent two months in the southern slums of Delhi, Lado Sarai, working with an aftercare home called “Atulya”, literally meaning “woman without price; immeasurable; unique”. They helped look after girls who had come out of the sex trade, or who were living locally in absolute poverty, by spending afternoons with them in a local production unit. The aim was to provide these girls with a place of safe refuge and to give them the skills and tools they needed to become financially independent. These skills would also allow for the girls to provide for their families and give hope to future generations.

During Natasha and Lavinia’s time in Delhi, they visited a number of aftercare homes through International Justice Mission (IJM), a human rights agency. IJM provides counseling, therapy and support to girls between the ages of 13-16 at homes such as St. Catherine’s aftercare home (one such home Natasha and Lavinia visited) with the aim of helping them heal emotionally.

Through Oasis India, a charity based in Mumbai, Natasha and Lavinia also visited an aftercare home for girls called Nirmal Bhavan. Oasis India is based in the slums in Mumbai and seeks to empower the community through education and training, as well as working with individuals trapped in sexual exploitation and situations of human trafficking to be equipped with new skills and empowered.

Through experiencing first hand the harrowing effects of human trafficking and the devastation it had brought upon the lives of so many women and children, Natasha and Lavinia were motivated to take action with the aim of making a difference to the lives of these victims. So, Beulah London was born.

Equal to Beulah London’s charitable heart is its desire to produce exceptional quality garments, without compromise. The brand stands for meaningful fashion, bridging the gap between high-end fashion and style, and ethical sourcing of products.

Kudos to everyone working to free children from sexual slavery, and to CNN for drawing our attention to a problem we would rather not face. Finally, CNN is doing something worthy of Ted Turner. Demi Moore doesn't have to do more than rest on her bank account, but she chose to make a difference for the less fortunate.. What a way to show the silly young crowd of narcissists what real beauty is. Our entire WORLD victimizes women, including women. Stupid movies joking about strippers and prostitutes, old Hef and his bevy of post-teens, obsessions with gyrating girls with their tongues hanging out, and yes, even tot beauty pageants–all show the fundamental devaluing of women endemic to all of us. So when are women going to make women their fight, rather than fight for the rights of men to do whatever men think they need?

This shows that even a smart comic like Carlin could be a jerk. Why not? Because prostitution victimizes women, children, and men who are forced to engage in it. The happy hooker is a myth. Do you really think anyone is happy with what they cannot choose? It's time for all of us to realize that this is not a funny topic. Comics, movies, and tv shows that make light of prostitution are only funny to the terminally immature.

Child prostitution, pornography, and abuse exists everywhere. Ever hear of sex tourism? One of the saddest things about the Asian tsunami was the use of orphans for child trafficking afterwards. It goes on right here in the USA. At the heart of everything is the idea that the weak are there to be used. Why does so much of society hate gay men? Because they see gay sex as violation, and they abhor the thought that they could be violate LIKE A WOMAN, like someone weaker than they are. It all has to do with our ideas of dominance, and greed. This is not funny, and we should not joke about it.

Prostitution is legal in India? I was not aware of this. Considering the conservative religious background of both the Hindi and Muslim population, that's around the opposite of what I would've expected. I mean, isn't this the country that wet itself in anger when an American actor kissed an Indian Actress during an awards show? Legal prostitution seems quite liberal for such a repressed people.

Prostitution is the act or practice of providing sexual services to another person in return for payment.

Rape is a type of sexual assault usually involving sexual intercourse, which is initiated by one or more persons against another person without that person's consent.

This is not prostitution. It is rape. These are children. They are not adults. And even if they were, they are not consenting. They have been taken as slaves. If these were boys would we for even a second consider the daily rape of young male children an acceptable way of making a living?

safe guard your children first then come out bragging your the biggest democracy in the world. the chinese would never do this to there children & none calls them a democracy when they are probably the biggest democracy in the world with just one or two tweeks to be sorted out.

Since many of you want to point the finger at one country are from the USA, let me point out the following story, also from CNN TODAY:

    http://www.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/08/03/us.child.porn.ring/index.html

"More than 50 members of a child pornography ring who engaged in what authorities describe as "horrific" and "unspeakable" crimes have been arrested for sexually exploiting children from 12 years old to as young as infants. The ring, based in the United States, reached across five continents and 14 countries.
Seventy-two members of the online site called Dreamboard have been charged in the United States."

Thats right.. in the good ole' "civilized" USA. I do believe that the following saying was credited to Jesus: "Before you remove the mote of dust from your neighbor's eye, be sure to remove the plank from your own." Judge not, lest ye be judged. This situation comes from good old supply and demand. The demand for sex is HERE in the USA. The supply of porn comes from the USA- from the two porn capitals of Atlanta and LA. So, take your self righteous cultural centric views to 'The greatest lil whorehouse in Texas' ok?
Also to those who want to further infect India with your Christian teachings. India has its own ancient culture. We dont have Christian priests molesting little boys...and we dont want them. Keep your Christian or Muslim teachings to yourself. We dont bother trying to convert you to Hinduism or Buddhism. We prefer that you treat us with the same respect.

Personally, I am glad that these children were rescued. I am against the abuse of children in ANY form, and animals as well. I hope that we can do more to address this situation GLOBALLY. I believe in sexual freedom for adults WITH OTHER ADULTS- Never ever with children. This is yet another situation where we have to THINK GLOBALLY and ACT LOCALLY.

Rescued 9. Its a good step to stop trafficking. Here are a few facts all of us should know(Indians as well as Americans)
    1. GIrls are trafficked from Nepal to Northern parts of India. Thats true. The nepalise parents sell their children(both boys and girls) to Indians. Bosy are used for work while girls are sold as servants to rich people or to idiots who turn them to s** slaves.
Not only india even US has the same problem.(http://www.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/08/03/us.child.porn.ring/index.html?hpt=hp_t2) This article was posted on CNN today.
Indian muslim girls are sold to Arab countries for money. Parents think this will end the misery for the kid as they will live with rich Dubai shaiks. But no one hears about them ever So bad. So Do I blame the bad Dubai shaiks for buying indian girls or the parents who are foolish to think so(its the same as the nepali parents..isn't it)??

    2. India has been fighting this problem for years and as everyone knows every society has good as well as bad people. So we still need to fight the bad where ever we are. So US is also doing the same. Please read the above article.
Hindu religion has nothing to do with this. Mata Durga is the highest of all gods and most of the good indians still follow that and treat women as equals.

US was not even in the world map untill 14th century. Once Columbus discovered the route from Spain, people moved to US to form this country.(please read history too – Recently CNN posted that most of the american kids dont know their old presidents either..isnt that bad) But do you know why columbus set off sailing? He was in search of India because it was the only rich country on the face of this earth. Ofcourse India is poor now because of constant invasions from people of every part of the globe. but still we preserved our culture and tradition. So stop talking bad about india. Just realize that its a viscous circle and every rich country will become poor one day. How about US which was a rich country after the second world war is now in debt of 14 trillion to the rest of the world and govt took 3 weeks fighting among themselves like spoiled children discussing about settling the debt(a program aired on HLN used these words'SPOILED CHILD'). So dont worry.

And speaking about jobs, please remember that we indians (ofcourse any immigrant) pays tax equally as you do and we dont have the benefit to enjoy the Social Security benefits. So that means we work hard and still we are the ones paying for your senior citizens and unemployed to live happy while you enjoy driniking beer and F**** bit*** in the bars. So who's doing good for the American society ??

This is not a blame game to keep blaming one another. Please all of you wether you are indian, american, paki or wat ever join hands and work together. I'm a christian too and I believe we all are the children of god and we should only help each other rather than blaming and scold
    ing others.

    Hey lavakava,

I sure hope you don't live in the US. You sound like a bitter, old Indian woman. You immigrate to the United States for a better life, but hold on to the same beliefs that chained you down in your mother country.

Boobs are enough to be blamed for something in Indian culture. You're forgetting what Bollywood was like back in its "golden age". The women who danced in the center of a room for men weren't just dancers, they were prostitutes (see: Mughal-e-azam). Also, the average age that american girls lose their virginity is 17. Let's not forget that many girls in India are married by then and have a few children. Early marriage in India is just an excuse to do ridiculous things to women because marriage somehow gives the seal of approval to do whatever the fuck you want. You can't even compare divorce to honor killings, satis, dowry, etc.

I find it so difficult to cherish my Indian heritage when I hear stories from immigrant women about the horrors of being a woman in India.

Women, this is our fight., with help from the more loving of our men. Time to stop supporting their causes and look to our own. Make up your own minds about things without the MALE intrusions of clergy, husbands, sons, or media. Raise your daughters to respect themselves and their sisters. Stop reacting to the trolls you see here. They'll never get it. We listened when they told us that the Equal Rights Amendment had to be defeated because women would go to combat and use the same toilets as men. The ERA was defeated, and we do. They kill our sons in stupid wars of pride and greed, and they buy and sell our children. Know anything about biology? We are the norm. We are the strong ones. Most miscarriages are male, and male infants with problems are more likely to fail. So why do we defer to them? Their fights are not ours.

You couldn't be more wrong. I'm married with kids who I don't want to see grow up like you, full of hate and hoping to prove something. A great group of gay men sang "Macho, macho, maaaan." They were mocking the sentiment. I'm not bitter, I'm not fat (though if I were, what difference would it make?), and I'm not even remotely conservative. Jackboot-wearing? Code word for "lesbian." I'm not that either, although it wouldn't matter either. Women pedophies? Oh, puhlease! Even if there were only one, men would point their fingers and say, "see?" Yup. Women can be sick too, but how many of them institutionalize it and call it "girls just being girls?"

India has become too big to govern and uphold social values that are in conformity with todays global norms. Racism, polytheism, prostitution, drug use, religious suppression, dehumanizing people, treating women like trash is rampant and out of control. time to break it up into smaller pieces like Sudan before the country implodes.

    Silence Does NO Good

If anyone wants to read about an awesome Indian man doing something awesome in India, then google "risug" and check out the information. Basically, it's an incredible new form of birth control for men which is hitting SERIOUS resistance from political groups, for the simple fact that giving the poorest men control over their fertility will lead to a drastic decline in the cheap labor pool the ruling class needs to exploit for profit. Anyway, he's my favorite Indian, by far!

What's with all these comments about eachothers religions? Everyone says their religion is the best and correct religion. Everyone says their religion is one of good values and morals, yet these same religions tell you to kill and die for your religion. Some religions even convince their people to kill innocent people. Some religions teach you to suppress your women and use them like tools. Some religions teach you that s.e.x with women is for procreation only yet s.e.x with a young boy or girl, is OK? More wars have been started over religion than any other reason. Religion is bull s.h.i.t. Grow up and start taking charge of your own life. Stop looking to blame others or blame the "evil one". Take responsibility for your own life and your own actions. This goes out to all religions. You people need to take a close look at yourselves before you throw any more stones. Your religion teaches you to be tolerant yet you are the first to judge. Your religions teach you to be hospitable and caring yet you’re the first to hurt. Religion is a manmade tool used to control you.
