Argentina bans classified ads offering sex

BUENOS AIRES – Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner signed a presidential decree Tuesday that bans classified ads that offer sexual services in Argentine newspapers. The decree, number 936, entered the Argentine Official Bulletin and became law on Wednesday.

Like newspapers around the world, many Argentina papers are filled with sex-related advertisements. Kirchner said many of the women featured in these ads are victims of human trafficking and forced into prostitution. She said the move, though, was not an attempt to isolate or embarrass them.

"We will never condemn any woman. In most cases, no one has the chance to choose the life that they live," Kirchner said.

In her announcement at the Casa Rosada in Buenos Aires, Kirchner was critical of media outlets that garner major revenue from sex ads, accusing them of "double morals and hypocrisy."

"Newspapers can't print headlines demanding that we fight human trafficking, while their back pages present ads that humiliate women," said Kirchner.

A new government agency will be created to monitor classified ads, but it is not clear yet what consequences, if any, newspapers will face if they violate the new law.

        Nobody will stop being a prostitute if one can't announce in newspapers. This is a ridiculous action to make newspaper look more "respectable".
        They will still announce in the telephone booths that still exist in Argentina, they will still announce in internet. This has done NOTHING to stop prostitution and has done NOTHING for any woman being forced to work as a sex slave. This was completely ridiculous.
        If they want to stop prostitution, they shoudl close the "Whyskerias" (brothels) that abound in Argentina.

        The overwhelming majority of women (and men) who sell sex do it freely because they find it pays well. The constant drivel we hear about "trafficking" is baloney meant to distract us from the fact that many consenting adults choose to buy and sell sex. The right wing conservatives and left wing feminazis can agree on a common perspective on the issue, each for their own reasons. They have formed a coalition to claim that women who sell sex are being exploited by men. This serves both of their interests for different reasons. The truth however is that the overwhelming majority of people who sell sex do it freely and voluntarily and are not being "trafficked" by anything other than their own personal desire to engage in that type of employment.

        Are you afraid of them getting rid of your sources for desperate times. Who are you to say that most people consent to it? Where do you get this information from? You have no idea what goes into that kind of lifestyle and how many of those who do choose to get into the industry end up leaving it and not just because they get old. Of course some perv would be supportive to the exploitation of women and children. You have to be a really pathetic, selfish, miserable person. So stop spreading your ignorance just because you happen to enjoy peoples suffering. You're sick....

      @Avenger
      Maybe in your country things are like you say, but in latin america it's not. I go (and will continue going even if it's banned here) to brothels every weekend. During 15 years I go every weekend on brothels, I become friend of girls, owners, others customers etc... ALL women that do it in the brothels I go are brazilians, independent, some from rich families others from middle class families, 70% of them is on college and 100% of them are there because they want to, they live in the city, they born in the city, they have families, car... In your country, that I don't know what country it's, maybe is like you imagine, but don't try to imagine how things works in latin america and here, no right-wingers, no fascists and no feminazis will ever bans freedom, if they do we will continue to do what we want to do because we have Constitutions that protects our freedom. Argentina made a big mistake just to answer for a pathetic and useless report made by USA conservatives nazis and that makes no sense, because entire universe knows Colombia is the most violent country and the country where most of human trafficking and sex slavery happens in latin america and on this useless toilet paper they call "report", Colombia is painted in blue. They can ban women of freely work here, but this will be only letters on a useless stinking paper, because in reality they will continue working and I'll continue buying because my Constitution, that's sovereignty over anyone who call themselves authorities or legislators, allows me and the women to freely do what they want to do. And I have one message for USA nazis who think they can put their nose into our life: Here have no place for you, take care of your own country (it's needing a lot of care) and make reports only for your country and your bootlickers like Colombian dictatorships, rest of latin america is free and we don't want USA reports fucking with our freedom.

        Jose- you are an idiot. Hence your only capable of paying for companionship. You would not know what to do with a women less you were paying her to act as you can handle. Little boys like you are a waste of space. Your lack of real experience, not the fantasy you pay for, is hysterical. Get a life and consider not leeching off of others. And please, you are a male, you have no clue what the reality is behind the women you frequent. Everyone has their story. If a culture, as history has proven, has a large population of prostitutes, it symbolizes the failure of that society to protect, advance, educate and/or offer a equal chance at a life that does not require a woman to sell her body as the only alternative for the lack of the latter mentioned. Some cultures, women have no choice but to except this fate or starve. You little boy may contribute to the women surviving, but don't kid yourself. They are not your friend. They don't like you. You just provide them with the money they need. You are a sick boy and definitely part of the problem. Narcissistic fool.

      Ridiculous. Ads will offer 'special gym classes', 'wonderful meat', 'beauty services', 'intense massages'. Prostitution, freely excersised, is business. Ban ads doesn't combat slavery, which is what the government should be doing –starting with the police and justice systems, partners in that and drug trafficking.

    I live in neighboring Brazil and that's pretty much how the powers that be like to do things down here. Criminalize the behavior, but never address the underlying causes of such behavior. And it's all the more laughable when there are dozens of Argentine web sites advertising sexual services. Pretty soon, Kirchner will become aware of that and try to outlaw them too, but those sites will simply move hosting abroad and keep running, and all the while NOTHING concrete will be done to help those women who are in a vulnerable situation.

      I live in Brazil too and I know dozen of women who do it because they want to do and not because someone forced them to do. Bans anything will never work mainly in Latin America, you know how things works here. They must regulate and policy the brothels, copy stupid laws like Swedish one will simple create a black market and make it much more dangerous. And the ones busted will never be prosecuted, because we all know that who pays 250/hour for a girl have 10,000 to pay a good lawyer and overturn any law that bans and censure (brazilian constitution guarantees the rights of women freely choose profession).

    The overwhelming majority of women who sell sex do it because it pays good money and they consider it to be a good job. Nobody is "trafficking" them except themselves. This narrative of women who sell sex as being oppressed and exploited is so overdone and tiring.

      I agree with your comment that some women do put themselves in prostitution willingly; however, they are doing it because the think they do not have any other options, which is likely the case. Most of them do not have a high school diploma let alone a college degree or any job training. Prostitution is guaranteed money because there are sick men out there who have to pay for it! Needless to say, I guarantee that not one single women enjoys selling her body and losing her dignity. How about you rethink your statement and do a little research to get your facts straight before even considering that this world should give up on standing up for these women and children who do not have a voice! If you had a daughter who was a prostitute would you give up on her?! Take a walk in their shoes before you are quick to judge their motives.

        Well your statement assumes that there is inherently something horrible about selling sex. You say you guarantee that not even one woman enjoys doing it? I know women who have done it. Sure they dont' really "enjoy" it, but who enjoys going to work? I know several women who have done this to earn money and it's a good way for young women to earn money at a time of their lives when they are a student, dont have the potential to earn that kind of money yet. How many men enjoy being construction workers, or welders, or strawberry pickers? It's just another kind of job for many people. The overwhelming majority of people who do it (sell sex) do it because they choose to. Nobody is "trafficking" them. This babble about "trafficking" comes from people on the left and right who each dont like the idea of prostitution for their own political reasons. From an economic standpoint it would be pretty stupid to go through the trouble and risk of "trafficking" people when so many women want to do it because of the high pay that they're breaking down the door to do it. It's pretty absurd to imagine that businesspeople, however crooked, would go out of their way to "traffick" peopel for a job that so many woman want to do of their own volition.

        @Frank
        first off i'd like to say that a lot of people enjoy going to work, be it a job where they weld construct or pick berrys. The main difference between these jobs and prostitution is the whole deal of having to share their most intimate physical relation with people who usually dont care about them and use them, they see these women (and men) as a simple means to their own personal satisfaction.
        I would like to know where your whole idea of trafficking not existing comes from, because i can assure you that the numbers say otherwise and that there are hundreds of police reports that say quite the contrary, especially in countries like argentina.On an economic standpoint its really not that stupid to traffick people, considering that that high pay will go straight to the pimp or trafficker the prostitute is a slave considering he wont pay her if she is a slave.

        @Frank

        It's obvious you're trying to justify your own action in using women for your personal satisfaction. Must be hard to find a girl you dont have to pay for if you're that ugly and dumb... your comments don't justify you at all. So where do these women who sellls themselves willingly go when they get older? What support do they have when their youth is gone? Prostitution cannot be compared to a job. Jobs are there for security and bettering your life. Jobs give you benefits and when you're too old to work you'll have that money to retire with. If prostition is a job then what do these women get out of it? Living in crack houses where their pimps get all the money? That's a great life to live... Who wouldn't want that? (That's sarcasm btw..) If you actually learned the facts of the aftermath of selling your body then you'd understand why it's so wrong. Of course only a selfish sick person like you would take enjoyment out of the suffering of women and children. Do you take pride in dying a lonely misrable person? Get a real personality and stop leaving your ignorant shallow comments. Its people like you that need to be locked up and put away forever... I'd like to see you spend a day in the shoes of a trafficked vitcim.

    If u want to curb prostitution; u should enhance people's life so that less women sell their body. also if the culture finds sex trade attractive even to average income women; then it is a cultural issue to be addressed thru education. addressing the root of the problem is the solution not taking stupid steps like ban on Ads. It is a move in the right direction, but superficial...

    The problem is that you can differentiate between the women who by themselves offer their “services” from the pimps who exploit them or even the places where they are retained against their will, doped up without ever seeing the sunlight until they finally get rid of them, that is, kill them. An Even bigger problem is that the police protect the slavers because they are strongly bribed.
    But this measure is not to combat forced prostitution, the government is at odds with the opposition newspapers and just want to make a stance while cutting a chunk of their daily revenue from the ads.

    As long as people think sex is "dirty" and providing sex for money is "immoral" you will have such irrational laws. Fight trafficking, forced prostitution and sex with minors by all means but leave the regular sex trade alone. There is nothing "degrading to women" in prostitution nor any reason to prosecute Johns.

    Nothing but a patch, they could do way more. They know the addresses and owners of bars where thousands of women, most of them Paraguayan and Bolivian, are being exploited but don't do much about it.
    Meantime women who are and aren't exploited are raided, abused by the police force who take away their money, phones and ask them for bribes to let them out.
    Banning classified ads doesn't help them much.

    You know, getting a prostitute, now and than, would be cheaper and less painfull than having a wife. The women would be happy 'cause they got all the money they need and can fool around all the time like they want to. Fighting would slow down, 'cause there's less relationships. Its win, win, win.

    Currently, I live in latin america. I know a few things about how the human trafficking is conducted and why. This is a useless move by the Argentinian bovernment. They just acquiesced to the pimps and panderers. This will not stop prostitution in any way. If anyone wants to talk to me about prostitution in latin america seriously, contact me at miltruiz506@hotmail.com. I have run into prostitution ads in Spanish sites (and by Spanish, I mean that they are run from Spain) by trying to contact women who are happilly married, on single personal ads(because the spaniards don't regulate their ads like craigslist), and it was someone pranking them out of frustration, and some of these women even cried, and you can believe I denounced those ads to the site, and then I called up the next ad, and it's a pimp. Called the next ad it's a girl asking how much I'm willing to pay. Long story short, on the internet, you will not find a girlfriend down here. Only prostitutes (not that I have anything against prostitutes). And it's the fault of these Spaniard sites. Like Mundoanuncio. Please close that site down, because it needs to be closed. down.

    GREAT INITIATIVE, THERE IS STILL LOTS TO DO.....

    Prostitution is when a woman is conscious of her own acts however....

    SEX SLAVES IS SLAVERY There is no conscious yes or no; I don't want to prosittue myself tonight or yes I need more cash for rent. Slavery is forced!!! The worst type is child sex slavery, these children are tied up and drugged for years!! Barely living day by day so that Demonized people can rape them while they are in and out of consciousnesses.

    read the story in wikipedia as well as (if you can stomach) the website of kidnapped teen – Johnny Gosch

    Don't for one second believe that this issue is as superficial as Julia Roberts in the movie Pretty Woman. There are millions of women and children that at this moment right now they are being tortured in the most demeaning way and videotaped without their consent! Even killed for their organs or killed for fun! The devil is working hard but I can be hell's worst nightmare when it comes to this issue and if I had supernatural powers I would save every single man, woman, and child from sex slavery

    @frank... clueless moron. @everyone else. Ok time to face facts. Prostitution is not going anywhere. If you want to protect these women then legalize, regulate and limit to 10 to 12 percent the amount the pimps of working girls agent can take. Make the pimp take a hash loose in their income and forcing them (the pimp) to report their income you take the illegal incentive away while bringing the worker closer to mainstream. By treating these girls as members of society and limiting the amount pimps can take you will empower the workers, while reduce the lowlifes that prey on them. Also by allowing those to keep their profits this will allow anyone in the field to save and get out. There are several models around the world including the USA (Nevada) that support this argument. However keeping it controlled by the underworld guaranties that it will stay a black hole that women and men will fall into and never return. This problem is solved by wresting control from those that prey and giving it to those that work. I realize this is not a popular viewpoint, but I am more concerned with solutions rather than political correctness. If you are willing to step back from your current perspective and look at it as a Labor/management issue it is possible to improve the lifestyle of the downtrodden and cripple the pimps that profit. Take the profit incentive from the pimps and the trafficking slows to a trickle.

      The additional benefit would be especially in puritan uptight superficial society like the USA that legalized prostitution would over time help decrease sexually-related crimes by 50%. Old people, handicapped people, perv's, insecure people will have a legalized channel to fufill sexual need that they can't in a competitive alpha-male society.

      What I meant was that the paper could not yell “rape!” because larcely they did not have the specific claim that she was.On the surface, this is a convincing argument. It's the same reaction I had both to this and to much of the other raped by elves stuff I've seen in the archives here. The thing is that if you take a step back you realise that this is completely ludicrious.To take a completely random example, on the BBC news website at the moment, there is an article about the theft of some pigs. The description of the crime is: More than 500 pigs have been stolen from a farm in south Staffordshire . The newspaper isn't worried about being sued in case it turns out the pigs went missing of their own accord. If we applied the no specific legal terminology rule to thefts, this article would have to read 500 pigs walked off of a farm in Staffordshire .The difference between rape and theft is that if 500 pigs go missing, everybody accepts that a crime has been committed, the only question is by whom. It's only in the case of rape that we take presumption of innocence to mean presumption that a crime has not taken place at all.

    Hunger,thirst,rest and recuperation after being ill and of course cohabitation without strings of responsibility are all like natural or zoological let ups which need to be looked as natural calamities. they necessarily follow with lots of thrill and later on relief if the consenting parties are nevertheless just driven by passion and instantaneous love. But with the ingredient of money in picture as a considerantion for providing enjoyment from either side only justification is health and mutual agreement to take it with acceptable levels of absolute mutual liking and there should be no exploitation from either side. The remuneration for offering such a service should be neat clear acceptable and enough to provide with necessary supports. Each of such orientations of temporary nature should be under supervision of doctors and law enforcers so that a quick and unreproachable endearment ends happily causing no injury to the parties concerned and society at large. there should be some contribution towards pension and savings from the person who uses such services besides a fee towards health service charge to take care of hygiene and health of person provided service. There should be a roaster and record of such people. There should be a law for day dating on one to one basis per diem. and the SUNDAYS EASTER DAYS AND CHRIST MAS DAYS ARE TO BE EXCLUDED FROM SERVICES. During the professional routine if one begets children they should be taken care of by the society. And from the begining of conception the Government should give ideal support and treatment and rest from duty.The contributory funds can be made use of for this. Any systematic approach will reduce the evils and incidentally the good relations florish and better families too may rise from these temporary but carefully nurtured relations. Calamitous part of the act should be carefully removed from the minds and a happy one to one rendezvous should be applied for a healthy society.
