The boys' choir from Zambia sang in churches, schools and shopping malls across the United States. In exchange for their hard work, the boys were promised an education, wages that could be sent home to family and a school that would be built in Africa.
People who heard the 12-member a cappella choir were touched. They reached into their wallets and purses and offered up donations. The boys, ranging in age from 12 to 17, sang a mixture of gospels in English and their native tongue. They brought in more than $1 million, yet saw little of it. They received room and board and the occasional token payment, but no wages, no education, no school back home.
The boys are among the faces of modern-day slavery - in their case, trafficked into the United States under the guise of a faith-based organization that preyed on them.
"They were brought here for a specific purpose and that was to get as much out of them - with no regard for them or their futures," says Sal Orrantia, a U.S. immigration agent who worked the case.
The number of people ensnared in modern-day slavery ranges from 12 million, according to the United Nations, to 27 million, according to leading anti-slavery activists like Kevin Bales. Another prominent activist, Siddharth Kara of Harvard, estimates the number could be as high as 30 million. The broad range is the result of challenges associated with tracking a practice hidden in shadows and finding a consensus on how best to define and measure it.
Experts agree the vast majority of slaves today live in Asia and the Pacific, where they are held against their will as a result of debt bondage in agriculture and domestic work. Millions of others across the globe are used for sexual exploitation.
"To me, slavery means one person who is completely under the control of another person, that they use violence to maintain that control, they exploit them, make money out of them and that the [victim] just can't walk away," says Bales.
"Those are the fundamental criteria really for what slavery has always been about throughout all of human history."
Bales heads Free the Slaves, an organization that works to liberate exploited men, women and children across the globe and make sure they remain free.
"Our ultimate goal is the end of slavery on planet Earth. We really believe that's possible," Bales says.
He says modern-day slavery must be attacked on four fronts - politics, business, religion and society - for it to be eradicated. He compares the current fight to the global determination to eradicate small pox decades ago.
Today's slavery differs greatly from the trans-Atlantic slave trade, when from 1501 to 1867 an estimated 12.5 million Africans were shipped to the Americas. Back then, slave owners were typically prominent members of society, and a massive economic system was based on the global institution of slavery.
Today, enslavers are mostly shadowy figures lurking in the fringes.
"Slavery has been pushed to the very edge of society," says Bales. "It's really standing on the brink of its own extinction. And if we understand that and get together and give it one really hard boot, we can kick it over the edge into extinction."
Bales' mission began more than a decade ago when he first met a young woman named Seba in Paris. At age 9, Seba was taken from her home in Mali by a family friend, who promised the girl a better life in France. Seba cooked for the friend's family, looked after her children – and was often punished with beatings.
"Once in 1992, I was late going to get the children from school; my mistress and her husband were furious with me and beat [me] and then threw me out on the street," Seba told Bales in his 1999 best-seller, "Disposable People."
"I had nowhere to go; I didn't understand anything, and I wandered the streets. After some time, her husband found me and took me back to their house. There they stripped me naked, tied my hands behind my back, and began to whip me with a wire attached to a broomstick."
Seba was freed when a neighbor heard her screams and called police. She had been held for so long she didn't know her age when she was freed.
Across the globe, the stories of modern-day slavery bear a similar theme.
In Ghana, a 9-year-old boy hauls heavy equipment from boat to shore in a fishing village under the midday sun. At the end of a long, hot day, sometimes he'll only get a beating.
In Haiti, a group of teens stand frightened just before they're raped - initiation into forced prostitution. The ring is run by criminals in Port-au-Prince's notorious Cite Soleil slum, a trade that survived last year's massive earthquake and continues to thrive.
And in Texas, the voices of the Zambia Acappella Boys Choir were used to profit their captor, a Christian missionary who recruited the boys from Africa and brought them to the U.S. in the late 1990s.
The missionary, Keith Grimes, ran a faith-based group called TTT: Partners in Education. The federal government began investigating in 1998 after church members in Texas filed complaints raising concern about the treatment of the boys.
When Grimes died of natural causes, the investigation ended. In 2001, the U.S. Department of Labor ruled that Grimes' group was liable for nearly $1 million in back wages and civil penalties for the members of the choir. To date, none of the boys has received any of the money because Grimes died and his company was bankrupt.
Across the globe, dozens of organizations like Bales' work with governments and groups on the front lines to crack down on slavery.
In northern India, a rehabilitation center called Bal Vikas Ashram helps children ages 8 to 14 recover from enslavement by carpet loom owners. It also helps organize raids on slave owners. In the last year, the group helped free 111 children.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, human rights groups work to free slaves being used by warring factions in mines rich in gold and other metals. In some cases, villagers are snatched at gunpoint and forced to work; other times, women and girls are forced into the sex trade around the mines.
In the United States, groups work with women and girls to recover from the trauma of forced prostitution, where they are raped and held against their will by pimps.
Shamere McKenzie says she became enslaved at 19. She needed $3,000 for college and met a young man on the campus of St. John's University in New York who said he could help. He turned out to be a pimp who kept her captive for a year and a half.
"When I told him I didn't want to do this anymore, I remember being choked until I peed on myself," McKenzie says. "I was just choked, beaten up, thrown on the floor and beaten.
"A lot of people asked why did I do it for so long if it was something I didn't want to do. But being in a situation like that, you're controlled by fear."
She says her pimp had anywhere from three to 12 women and girls under his control at any time. On a typical day, McKenzie says she would wake up around 9 a.m., be sent to a strip club around noon and work the streets until 7 p.m.
She and the others would then sleep until 10 p.m. before being sent back out. McKenzie tried to run away three times, but her pimp would threaten to kill her and harm her family. "All the girls were afraid of him."
McKenzie's prostitution ended when police stopped the car she was driving. Her pimp and other prostitutes were in the car, including a 12-year-old girl. Even though she was being held against her will, she was charged with transferring a minor across state lines and convicted. The pimp was convicted as well.
Tina Frundt is now helping McKenzie in her recovery. Frundt is the founder of Courtney's House, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit group that helps women and girls who have been exploited by the sex trade.
Frundt says she was forced into prostitution at age 13 in Cleveland, Ohio. Since Courtney's House began in 2008, the organization has helped 500 victims escape sex trafficking. The average age of girls being forced into slavery in the U.S., Frundt says, is between 11 and 14.
"In the U.S., we commercialize forced prostitution and pimping - we glamorize it with 'pimp this' and 'pimp that,'" she says. "And so, of course, we make it look like it's a choice. ... And overseas we make it look sad and that these girls are forced in.
"But the truth and reality is: In Thailand, girls call their traffickers 'pimp.' In Honduras, girls call their traffickers 'pimp.' In the U.S., the girls call their traffickers 'pimp.' So there is no difference."
She says Americans need to wake up about the realities of what is happening on the streets in their country. "We have an epidemic."
"Being raped, held hostage, tied up is not something that you choose to do," she says. "How did I get out? Unfortunately, it's how many of our kids get out. I ran to the police and they arrested me."
Even though she was a child, she spent the next year in juvenile detention because prostitution is illegal. Her pimp remained at large, Frundt says.
It's an all-too-common theme for those combating human trafficking.
"These are people, whether they're from another country or whether they're enslaved at home … who have been trapped in a situation that they can't get out of," says Luis CdeBaca, who heads the State Department's Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, an office created in 2000.
CdeBaca, an ambassador-at-large, was appointed by President Obama in 2009 to coordinate U.S. government activities to bring an end to modern-day slavery.
He says traffickers prey on the vulnerabilities of the victims - who many times are seeking a better life - and "they pervert it."
"Instead of being the opportunity that the victims want, it becomes the trap," says CdeBaca. "One of the things that's horrible about the human trafficking situation in the 21st century is that you can sell a person over and over and over."
He says governments must better train law enforcement about the proliferation of human trafficking, and that non-government organizations must continue pushing governments to do more.
"If you don't have a cultural impact where people have decided together to say 'no' to modern slavery, there's no reason why law enforcement should be out there doing this on their own," he says. "It really starts when the cultures change."
This is what the Republicans have wanted for all working people for half a century now and for the last decade, the Democratic politicians have pretty much been the same. This seem perfect for the huge corporations which supply the majority of the funding for election campaigns.
You comments imply that you do not have any understanding on slavery.
You think you hard boy I finna teach you a thang or two.
First!!!
Idiot!
I bet you're last place in life
CNN's PROJECT FREEDOM (for another distant country outside of our US HOMELAND)... yea another bravo to a very humanitarian effort. But before our govt hand them our tax money like the usual, don't we have to solve our own first ? Not to be mean and heartless, but the priorities should be taking care of our very own first !
This is specially true for our famous actors/ actresses.. they're always into assisting people from distant countries, other than their very own ! (i.e. Celebrities dopting somalian children instead of our very own, etc).
I understand that you would want to help your fellow Americans first, but often people who are kind to others, are also the most kind to themselves or their own kind.
The problem is bigger in other countries and it filters here. Sadly, no matter how much money is thrown at the problem people will find new ways to enslave and harm others due to Ego, the need for power and wealth. We all need a strong dose of reality by being treated as we treat others. Stand to the mirror and think of yourself being treated as you believe in and maybe you will see.
The celebs go over seas to adopt for one reason. It is cheaper, less complicated & time consuming to fly around the world to adopt. The moutains of paperwork & money involved are unbelievable in the US. A coworker of mine ended up shelling out $60,000 to adopt a baby by the time it was all said & done. The process took over a year. Watching her deal with that process was heartbreaking. I'm no softie either. Heck I didnt even sniffle a little when " Old Yeller" died.
You have been sadly misinformed. We chose to adopt overseas, but not because it was cheaper, but rather because of the unstable adoption laws in the USA. Our costs were considerably higher than any of our friends who have adopted here in the USA. Not only did we have required agency fees to pay, but we also were required to make specific dollar amount "donations" (mandatory) to the orphanage our children were being adopted from, plus we had to incur outrageously high airfare costs, as well as hotel accommodations for the three weeks we were abroad. And, we waited much, much longer to bring our children home than our friends who were adopting here in the USA. As for the Hollywood scene who are adopting abroad, traveling half way round the world to bring a child home is difficult no matter who you are! It's a long hard flight to sit on an airplane for 36+hours....But, it sounds like your friend might have been taken advantage of by one of our own! Sad...
The adoption issue is a bit off-topic, but I agree with the fellow poster. US adoption laws are tricky, and sometimes they are tweaked years after adoption has been completed with very problematic results. For instance, in the early 1980's there was a stream of cases in which courts granted some African-American biological mothers right to disclosure of where they children were because it was ruled that some adoption agencies around 1969-1972 had mishandled incentives to give up babies for adoption.
There have been reported cases in which biological mothers, upon agreement to receive financial contributions for prenatal and childbirth care, had later decided to keep the babies AND sued the would-be adoptive parents so that they should continue to pay for care while the mother decided whether or not to actually give the baby – after birth!
(Born in N America, lives in Asia)
I think it's ignorant to speak on behalf of a demographic but I can tell you that anyone who has visited a third world or developing country like Cambodia feels compelled to help because of the heartbreak they witness. I lived in SE Asia and I would welcome a 3rd world adoption. You see children running around naked, starving, sick...
Ok. Head smack! That was 3 reasons.
Alexander, I strongly disagree with you. True, lots of Americans are struggling and we should help them. But I believe that since we are all children of God and all members of the human race, we are all called to help everyone and anyone in need, whether they are from America, or another country. Obviously, these poor children are in desperate situations and are very much in need of any help. I don't think you should be hating on people and organizations who don't think their love should stop at the boarders of their country.
I am not sure if this article discuss ways to rehabilitate these. Reporting only can do so much. Now that we know
it, let us step in to eradicate it.
We should institute Chinese justice for pimps, slave-traders, dope dealers and other assorted scums of this world: Trial on Monday, Conviction on Tuesday, Execution on Wednesday. The Earth is over-populated; lets get rid of the scum.
Agree!!
No , let the punishment fit the crime. They forced someone into prostitution. Let them try being the on the other end of the , " stick"
amen to that. their society have been around for thousands of years and will be after ours have failed , because of our bleeding heart way o f dealing with scrum
Personally, I think all the idiots and wingnuts, especially the Christian religious ones, defending slavery should all be whipped, hung drawn and quartered but only after being buggered almost to the point of death while having to read their scriptures.
Isha. How can you report on slavery and support MTV's Skin TV show. Would you let your son or daughter watch that TV show. If not then you an idiot and a hypocrite.
"Clearance Auto Insurance" rates are very low and now I am saving a lot on my car insurance. Dont be fooled by 5 mins can save 500$
Just an FYI – the dollar sign goes BEFORE the dollar amount, OK? Maybe you should take the money you save with cheapo auto insurance and get an education.
Is this going to become "spam central", or are the moderators going to do something before the floodgates open on spam and advertising? No one wants to see it, whoever you are!
The difference between you and Christ – He wasn't an idiot.
Nice cherry picking there, idiot.
"SERVANTS be obedient to those who are your Earthly masters" But you are too dense to understand context, why do I bother?
See the problem Jesus is that you changed the word servant for slave. Servants are payed, slaves are not. That aside this is a quote urging behavior for a society that ceased existing about 1,500 years ago. Anyone who would take such advice literally in todays culture is a moron.
I mean really, With human population as it is, what else can these humans really be good for... the next Bill gates? Sorry, we already have microsoft. Now shut up, and get back to the filed for my bushels of wheat to feed the other half of the over populated world!
@fyreflye how do you cherry pick from a book thats supposed to be 100% the word of god? You either believe it all or believe none....logic 101 man...if someone is telling a story and 2-3 details aren't matching up....then their prob lying.
I guess I would not make a good slave. Because I can tell you right now.. The so-called master BETTER watch his back. Because the second I get a chance I am putting a knife in has butt. No person that enslaves another human being should live on this earth.
fyreflye, it is most Christians who are the cherry pickers. You either believe the bible in its entirety as the word of God or you don't. Either it's all true, or none of it is true. I know it hurts you to believe this, but that verse does refer to slaves. Some of our forefathers believed it so much that they were willing to fight for that right. Were they cherry picking as well? I can't imagine what you have to say about other verses that are offensive, and how people are just cherry picking those too. You moderates crack me up and are the scariest of all the believers.
Christ were the servent of GOD ,i mean under God is will ..
and as muslim and a global citizen i say God is the only one to obey to ..
slavery sucks ..God lets us all free is the freedom we get born with
and nobody have the right to take it from us!
also I belive changes are up to everyone of us
because as individuals is about us is about everyone of us
the way this world goes !..
so lets make a step in the hope of a better world
lets make a chainge through unity and love!
To whomever made the comment earlier quoting the bible ("jesus"):
Don't you dare mock the Lord and take His word (the bible) out of context... I don't wish any curses on you, but don't advise you to mess around with this!
@fyreflye Everyone cherry picks to serve their own prejudices, for example Christians love to pick things the denounce being gay, but say nothing about shellfish, tattoos, womens rights, killing their children for disagreeing, or even Jesus's teachings of love thy neighbor or turning the other cheek...
if you want to free 20 million people from Slavery.. end the FED.
There is no cherry-picking going on here, and in context the passage clearly talks about slaves. The passage further mentions free vs slave. It is clear that the Bible condones slavery.
Ephesians 6:5-9 (New International Version)
5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. 6 Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. 7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, 8 because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free.
Amen to that !
Slavery is ok by the bible. The bible gives instructions on how to properly beat your slave.
I agree with you firefly. Jesus wasn't an idiot! People like these guys are morons! It's this sigh of the times
Exodus 21:20-21 "And if a man smite his servant, or his maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished. Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his money [property]."
bullet
Exodus 21:26-27 "And if a man smite the eye of his servant, or the eye of his maid, that it perish; he shall let him go free for his eye's sake. And if he smite out his manservant's tooth, or his maidservant's tooth; he shall let him go free for his tooth's sake."
Servant and slave are not the same word or context, but like you would get that in your rush to condemn others. Its funny you spend time cherrypicking a book you mock. What a full and satisfying life you must lead.
Major US Private contractor caught selling preteen sex slaves. What did the the US government do about this, The same thing they did with the Wall street Banksters NOTHING. Welcome to the new America. Owned and sold to the transnational corporations by are fascist Nazi Party the Republi-Cons. Most of the Jobs have already been shipped oversees, along with millionaire and billionaires not paying any taxes, or there companies. If that's not enough were stuck in 2 fake wars that were made up for personal greed and profit. Now after finishing off the rest of the last strong holds of the American way of life. The Koch Brothers along with there partners in crime the Republi-CON party are now going after our Unions. Soon most of us will be working 16 hour days with no health insurance for 3 Dollars an hour. I hope when many you voted for them Republican Tyrants based on the lifestyle of some gays. That it will all be worth licking your bosses gonads for a few bucks a day.
I'd be a whole lot more impressed with your post if you had bothered with a spellcheck or even tried to make a sensible statement, but the real "winner" part of your post is how you can't even speak about the truth of what's happening in the world without stooping to a gutter level of expression which demonstrates your ignorance. You just come across as another troll.
Marky- It's difficult to be prosaic when anger and frustration rule the day.
The verses about slavery are not condoning it, they are recognizing a social norm of the time. Slaves existed then and were encouraged, as Christians, to exhibit Christian love toward everyone, even masters. Read Philemon. Paul was asking for a slave to be freed. Clearly he knew it was better to allow slaves to be free.
Keep telling yourself that.
"Better than Jesus" OOh. I had no idea I was dealing with someone so pathetic. Sad really. Maybe you should try reading all of what Jesus was about, thinking for yourself (don't be scared, you can do it!) and not use yourself as a yardstick of perfection. That scripture is telling workers of that time period to do a good job for their "master," or employer. If you read further, it tells "masters" that they in turn should treat their workers in kind, with fairness. When you cherrypick and take things out of context, its not likely they will make sense. I feel sorry for you. Good luck, and God bless.
Oh really? Cite specific verses or you're just trolling.
Kevin = Bible verse police
Kevin = troll
You're new here, aren't you?
If you were'nt, you'd know that I'm hardly the bible verse police... I just think that there is so much wrong with the bible as it is that we don't need legitimate criticism diluted by ignorant comments where the author doesn't even know who he is quoting.
Why is it that most atheists demand a more literal interpretation of the Bible than many fundamentalists?
I do not substitute the word "servant" for "salve" because I want to, that is what the Bible I own has written. As for using the Bible to housetrain your puppy, the Bible is an idea that has been copied onto mere paper. Since you only get out of it what you put into it, the puppy paper thing explains a lot. Sorry I'm not offended. The lack of respect that you exhibit toward God and the Bible is a reflection on you, not on God or the Bible. Your opinion really only matters to you. The lack of God in your life affects only you, and no one else.
Sorry, "salve" should read "slave."
McKenzie, who got into prostitution at 19, was not " enslaved.". She was an adult, and could have left her pimp if she'd chosen to do so. She wasn't driving at gunpoint when she drove that 12-year-old CHILD across state lines. The inclusion of this woman, in a story about the horrendous abuse of CHILDREN, lessens the credibility of the reporter. Any adult who abets the abuse of a child is an abuser herself.
She was controlled by fear of her pimp. If she stopped the car and ran, do you think she could have outrun her pimp? Most likely she would have received another beating or faced being choked to death once he caught her. Read the story and try to understand please. Sex trafficking in this country is a major problem that has not had enough light shed on it. People are in denial thinking that this only happens in foreign countries. It happens every day here in the US and it needs to be stopped.
Unfortunately some people allow themselves to become victims. Soon as this guy forced into a situation she didn't like, she should have went to the police right away. I'm sure they were plenty of opportunities to escape or fight back when he first forced her into prostitution. But she stayed with him, allowed herself to be used and abused. At some point people need to take some personal responsibility for themselves.
But I can at least sympathize with people transported to foreign countries, they don;t know the language, the the police are no help. They toss them in jail if they escape cause they are illegals, often the enslaved are punished and the people doing the extortion get away without any jail time.
"To me, slavery means one person who is completely under the control of another person, that they use violence to maintain that control, they exploit them, make money out of them and that the [victim] just can't walk away," says Bales.
We dont need you to redefine slavery for your own purposes. Webster does a fine job of defining slavery.
Lola, are you actually arguing that only children can be enslaved?
You also sort of missed the fact that none of the things quoted were said by Jesus.
Here's a hint...if it's not in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke or John (and usually in red letters in most bibles), it's not Jesus talking.
the scripture makes good pot paper. If jesus lived today he would not be american, he would be somewhere in the world helping the poor, not for brownie points with god but because it's the purpose of all humanity.
I think the worst part is that victims in the states are looked at as criminals. How can we make any changes or offer help if the government is punishing victims? If people are afraid not only of their pimps but also that they won't receive the help they need once they try to receive help, this cycle will never end.
@The-law, no, the ordinary people who pay pimps are evil. That's why judgment is coming upon all the earth, not just on governments and pimps. It's ordinary people who are selfish, greedy and problematic. One needs to look at his own sin, every single one of us – the message of God.
Yes, it's that bad "Jesus" are you still living in a tomb ? It is a million times worse than bad for the little girls and women who have to live thru it everyday ! Wish I had the money that's thrown away on these ignorant politicians in just one major election year to help as many as I could have better lives. It's so sad that the amount of that money would probably only help 10% of them. Thats how many there are & how bad it is !
I agree, how much did that woman from california piss away to try and win her seat? 200 million or something like that? how much did the dude in florida spend to try and win his seat? 96 or 97 million. the list goes on and on..it's ignorant. you want to do something meaningfull and dare i say it(intelligent) spend this kinda coin on these real problems with society...do that and you'll be the friggin president...get it?
I disagree with your MO<! Oh wait. YOU DONT HAVE ONE!
We are all slaves of the Oil companies and Big Banks anyway.
to equate King Jesus to a slaver..you are hell bound idiot...read Revelation 20:10-15..he did not condone it..but he did provide a better life..as well as Eteranl life..you are a complet moron

Some human hearts are just hard as stone, I grew up in a place where landowners live in mansions and their workers catch field mice for food. Workers meaning whole families including children as young as 7. These landowners build churches so we cannot expect the catholic priests to take the side of the workers.
Kit,thank you for your comment. Can you offer a quick and easy recipe for Brown field mice?
No way, IAMDOGPHART, even if you know what this means: "Some people tender mercies are cruel."
Kit, I grew up where women and children were enslaved by men and minorities were treated as dirt. Christian Westerners came and all the barbarism ended. We got civilized by the Catholic priests and Protestant missionaries.
Justina, did not grow up in any of those place but I have heard and interacted with people who have had such terible sexual slave and now the wear dippers. I have met people who have been sold out for less than a dollar because she wanted some money to buy food at that momnet and never saw her child again, I also worked on children who have become hunchs because their parents sold them for less than $10... all in the name of Poverty.
Nana, it's such a harsh reality, but it's better to be someone's slave than starve to death, really. But modern-day slavery has a lot to do with greed, not just a way out of starvation. In any case, everyone must engage against the evil. People need Christian education to get out of the pits permanently.
Let's just leave it at education, we want people to know the whole story.
The Catholic Church ha always been on the winning, moneyed side.
These comments are very hurtful. I run a very compassionate slave trade and employ many people that would otherwise have no job.
is that a church?
just so long as you pay taxes to help us out of our deficit!
In your case, it would be better for them to be unemployed!
Some people have no respect for legitimate businesses anymore amirite?
Sadly, I believe you, you are who you say you are, IAMDOGPHART, try IAMHUMAN, and I will send you a better recipe.
If this were dogs being enslaved America would pay attention.
So TRUE about the dogs! America would definitely be moved to rescue enslaved dogs.
I agree with terry. shame on what these people are doing to kids, whats wrong with today's world?? I love kids and i cant bare seeing anyone abusing or treating like kids like that. WAKE UP AMERICA. do something,, FOR THESE helpless kids
Why don't YOU do something, Maria? Or suggest what is to be done.
I'm under the assumption that most of the people who have commented on this board are not lacking in compassion, but yes, have felt something and there is probably an energy running through them which they channel with these self-righteous comments, or making wisecracks and simply trying to one-up one another with intellectual statements.
Ultimately, we're all in the same boat – clueless as to how to go about producing a change and waiting on the next guy. Perhaps we could shift the discussion... We're all living in this world, after all.
Very true "TRUTHY" I remember a news a week ago in the newspapers where an elderly woman threw a cat into a dustbin for no reason, I was very unhappy, and look! officials used CCTV to trace the woman in order for her to be dealt with accordingly. But in cases like this Slavery no one cares, of cause no one can bring relief to human sufferings, except the creator himself.
Dogs, like god, are man-made and need our constant caretaking to survive. Man on the otherhand, was made by some gastly monstrosity, and must fend for himself.
The main photo for this article on the home page for CNN.com is gorgeous. Great photography.
You people are pathetic! Doesn't anyone know how to spell?
This is very common in many parts of the world. It some, it has become a part of the culture and considered quite normal.
Boy! Where's the NAACP when you need them, eh?
fyreflye....Not trying to stick up for "Jesus" he/she isn't worth it but you are also saying to substitute "employer" for "master". Employer in today's world doesn't even come close to "Master" just like servant is nothing like slave. TCAT.....Slaves are paid in a sense. They are given room, board, etc...Servants can also be given room , board, etc...with the difference being is that they may get a small wage on top of it. Grant it, I do not condone slavery and servants, depending where they are, are paid a fairly descent wage.
...and CNN is reporting on this very important issue. AND...after the break more on Charlie Sheen....
Why do these comment sections seem to become nothing more than a battleground for spewing ignorant thought and hatred toward one another, from a veiled and anonymous computer keyboard? Would some of you say these things to others if they were right in front of you? Doubtful. This story is not an issue of Christians vs. other religions, of black vs. white, right vs. left, or anything else. This story is about an issue with humanity that needs to be eradicated. Use these comments to help bring light, thought or encouragement.
Sadly, the rise of the Internet has coincided with a declining sense of empathy, understanding and reason. The promise of a new digital democracy has instead become a digital anarchy where the anonymity of the keyboard makes uncivil behavior possible. There are no more reasoned debates, only accusations and name calling. Welcome to the new world of incivility, fear and paranoia.
CNN, this is the greatest thing you ever did as far as I know for the last 1/4 century I've watched you! Big thanks! Christian missions estimate 30 million human slaves on earth today, mostly females. In order to truly help slaves, everyone needs Christian education that teaches God created all, He loves everyone, every human is equal before God, and that everyone has God-given rights and freedom. Also, reading the Bible enables victims truly and permanently combat the human evil. People everywhere need food, education, medical care AND the Gospel message of the Bible. Secularism can never liberate people.
Yeah, justina! I guess we should clarify what *parts* of the bible though.... we don't want these girls reading about the daughters having s x with with father, or David and his abuse of power to force a woman, or bible condoning slavery, right? A bit of censoring, that's it! for the loooooove of jesus!
those girls thought that the world was ended and that there were no others to have children with. they got the father drunk so they could repopulate the earth. its called survival.
@J-L-, the Bible tells us how sinful humans are candidly and enables us to see ourselves in the ugliest forms to correct it because humans violate each other in reality. The Bible taught on slavery so slaves won't be mistreated or masters unjustly charged. The principles continue in today's employer-employee relationships. Where do you think the barbaric mankind get wisdom and civility? From the Bible.
Whats so glorious about this verse:
When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property. (Exodus 21:20-21 NAB)

Enough Said......
A slave in Jewish culture was one who needed to work off a debt...not taken against one's will.
When He talks of His followers being 'slaves' it is also not against their will....THAT is the difference.
Jesus is all loving and all wise and a King...He required that whether it was a person who was paying off a debt or a follower of Him, He required that each person be treated with love and respect.
Yup. We're all slaves to our credit cards and their astronomical interest rates..... Paying off debt for the rest of our lives.
@jes-, why are you being enslaved by your employer or your own greed? Jesus Christ came to set you free whether you are an employer, employee, unemployed or sluggard.
@jes-, ??? What Scripture?
As a European, facing an average tax pressure of 56% i consider myself to be next in line as a defacto slave to the State.
Jesus loves us all!! The boys were too young to get paid, and the cause was very good, which is maintain our Christian Missionary organization running. It is better to be enslaved for the love of Jesus!
There is no such thing as too young to get paid.
I'd rather be a heathen than a slave to anyone, even Jesus. AMMURIKA!
The ends do NOT justify the means. History has taught us that over and over again, the lesson is no different here.
Bullshit
Christian missionaries freed slaves all over the world and educated us to fight back the liers and villains.
there's dust in your eyes..what ? you like it that way ?? oh cool..
In Luke, chapter 14, Jesus was not kind and loving, for he said it's perfectly ok to beat your slaves/servants. How pathetic of him.
Jesus loves you dear Darrel, but you'll rot in the deepest hell for saying that.
And so shall you for casting judgment. You are not God. Do not pretend to know his will.
Darell, in Luke 14, Jesus told us to feed and take care of the poorest of the poor. It's my personal dream to find an atheist who can read. Bible-illiterate Westerners are illiterate altogether.
oh justina! your dream!! I have a dream... you have a dream.. let's dream together!!
me, you are a disgusting piece of S &*%$ and you'll be in h e l l
Woah, Justina that wasn't very Jesus-like. And it's not very Jesus-like to say someone' going to Hell (oh, by the way your supposed to capitalise Hell, it's a pronoun) for what they believe. I think Jesus would see the good in people and see beyond their religious beliefs. That's why your religion is, in my opinion, wrong. All these good people in the world will go to Hell simply for not believing in Jesus? Or is that okay because they aren't Christian? Christianity seems like a pretty exclusive club from the outside, and there is no guarantee that you won't do something in the 80 or so odd years you will be on Earth that will piss the Almighty off. And if you'd like to get down to brass tacks about the Bible I'll have to go out on a limb and say that more than likely 75% of the religious posters here are reading a corrupted version of the Bible. If you are reading the King James Bible you are not reading the original. You are reading an abridged version good ol' James edited to his liking. How about we all strive to make the life we are living right now better, than saving ourselves for some supposed cocktail party in the sky. If you think I'm going to Hell, I think you're wrong. I think the very fact you believe you have the power to condemn ensures that you, mon frere, are being hypocritical and opposing the very man you love so dearly. I think Jesus was a good man, a real man that helped many people in many different ways, but that does not mean you should idolise him. Exemplify his teachings of social justice, equality and forgiveness; not the man. Not a sermon, just a thought. Was that literate enough for you?
yo get a job..
yea justina i think you got your book wrong
We are all still slaves, We work to feed ourselves and our families, but we are taxed for monies that the government had nothing to do with earning, and all that money does is nothing, Its suppose to go to your state to fix roads and other things but it doesnt seem that my hard earned dollar is doing any good for me or my community. Then inflation, everytime somehig happens its us middle class Americans that get the bill and the rich look down on us and get richer. Slavery is still a bug part in our lifestyles, its not just an overseas thing. It happens to us everyday. Just think everytime your alarm clock goes off and you prepare for work, Your going to work to give uncle sam half of your money. and if you dont work then your a nobody. Modernized Slavery! In every state in America. Lets open our eyes people. Our politicians dont do nothing but continue to gain greed, as the American Public continues to pay for our presidents, and politicians mistakes. WE ARE ALL SLAVES!
look at your money who's face is on it? give to ceasar what is caesar's
Why no mention of Saudi Arabia where there are an estimated 1.5 million black slaves (in the gulf states the word for a black African is "Abd" or "Abid" which means slave)? I knew the Saudis had stakes in Newscorp....
well Frank, that might be also true, but don't prevent us today of kicking some chrsitians asses... hehe!!
Anyone who forces someone to be their slave should die.
Ephesians 6:5-9 (New International Version, ©2011)
5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. 6 Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. 7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, 8 because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free.
9 And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.
Just felt like posting what was left out by that Jesus dude who posted this and coused such a rift;
jesus
Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. (Ephesians 6:5 NLT
He left out Ephesians 9 and as far as I can see that kind of changes the feeling of Ephesians 6:5 when you read it as well. I am not a big bible reader, I just looked it up and noticed that.
I do think that slavery is wrong, it is sad to think that there are people out there in the world living such sad lives and that there are people out there in the world maiking that happen for them!
I can believe in God and the word of Jesus withouth believing in the bible, written by man, laid the laws and gov't that we still follow today. To enslave any person is to profit something from them, if we were all stripped of money we would however enslave ourselves for something more than what we have. It would then be up to our masters to treat us fairly. There has never been freedom and there never will be – we are all enslaved by someone or something. This story however, is a show of how power and greed is winning! Those that believe in the good of man need to ban together and send the message that I will look out for my neighbor and protect them like family.
So if you do not accept the Bible thenfrom where do you derive the words of Jesus that you accept?
Coffeegirl,
The Bible "is" the Word of God. If you studied the Bible, you would know that the scriptures were "inspired" by God. That means, man was a tool to do the writing, but God was the author. It is people like you (not meant to be derogatory) who are most deceived, not knowing nothing or enough to seek the truth.
did your god also "inspired" two different creation stories or adultery stories, or two contradictory jesus genealogies, and so forth? your god seems a bit schizophrenic...
Yes and what of the countless other Creation stories? Are those the world of God or just Pagan fallacies?
By the word of Jesus I mean the foundation that he stands for. I have a hard time believing in the Bible – which I have read (not memorized) mostly because the Christians chose only some of Jesus' disciples writings, not all of them. To me, this means either there was a publisher in charge and only chose what he wanted to present to the world, leaving out part of the truth. Was it a folk lore? Was it written to create a society of slavery? In any case, Jesus is the most famous person that ever lived and is therefore a very special being that taught and teaches us. I can't accept, logically that man was a tool to do the writing, but God was the author. If I were to believe that than I can believe anything ever written was inspired by God and should hold the same value – I believe together we are God individually we are nothing. The Bible itself does provide great outlines on how to live, the 10 commandments, and created a foundation to build a society from, other than that, to take it LITERALLY, in this day and age, is just crazy!
When the statement "ignorance is bliss" was uttered, it was obvious that the speaker had you in mind.
Oh brother,
I was expecting a few trolls to comment in here, but this is ridiculous.
"Jesus" – I know the Bible too. Christ himself said that he wasn't put on Earth to change society...but to change hearts and souls. What does your heart and soul say about slavery? What do Christ's teachings, indeed the ten commandments, lead you to conclude about slavery?
It's called free-will. If you believe in God, and in Christ, you surely know that you are expected to make certain decisions on your own, based on the lessons you have learned and what has taken root in your heart. If slavery somehow seems allowable to you, then all I can say is that you have drawn some vastly different lessons than I.
Then again, methinks thou art a troll....
What about the children forced into sex slavery in Cuba? The workers who are exported by Cuba at whim who make 20 USD a month while Cuba earns thousands on each?
OOPS! My bad, CNN has a bureau in Havana and would hate to lose it by reporting that news.
So I guess this article is not that slavery is all bad, just in places where CNN doesn't care about having a bureau.
Check this out!
http://hnn.us/readcomment.php?id=42847&bheaders=1
It's a forum where many of Grime's family members are defending him. Its from 1994.
Well there is always the hollywood music industry I guess 😉
Koranic students in Senegal, the Talibes: slaves, underage, ignored because their 'owners' power and parents' collusion.
http://www.irinnews.org/Report.aspx?ReportId=76080
"Often with ripped clothes, barefoot and filthy, the children move alone or in packs. Many never learn the Koran, officials from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) say, and rarely do they attain adequate schooling that will lead to jobs when they become adults. "
I applaud your effort CNN. This is sorely needed. I would ask that you include child brides in your definition of slavery.
Hmmmm... It looks to me like Ephesians 6 and Colossians 3 talk about how to maintain a Christian demeanor in the midst of on oppressive situation. I didn't see where it said "Slavery is good", but I do see how those who don't like the Bible and want it to say something bad or evil have decided to read that implication into the words. One of the great abolitionists of the modern era, William Wilberforce, put an end to the legal slave trade in the British Empire. I know many of you don't want to hear this, but he was a Christian. The writer of the hymn Amazing Grace, was a slave trader who turned to Christ and subsequently turned away from the slave trade. Jesus led him away from the slave industry.
Peace and Blessings to You All!!
using slaves to perform your music? at least you don't use slaves to write your music too
Jesus,
You are too ignorant to quote the Bible. Fear means reverence. And you have to research the original scriptures to find that all words do not translate directly in English from the Greek or Hebrew. Like the other person stated, it needs to be undestood in context as well.
So, I would assume you read the bible in Hebrew and Greek, right?
So, you can assume I researched and got the meaning. The bible says "study" to show yourselfvesapprove. Not read within your own understanding of today. Words have different meaning today then they did even 100 years ago. So don't be so cocky.
oh, so I am cocky because I ask you a question! haha, I see how beautiful christians are!
Let me get this.... you read the bible in English, and you swallow everything in it. But when someone questions you, you demand the person read it in Hebrew and Greek... haha, christians fundamentalists are very funny!
I have studied the Koine Greek for the Textus Receptus and a bit of Hebrew for the Masoretic text.
No contradictions in any of what I have read.
Sad news, but very old news. WORLD Magazine and Christianity Today covered this exact story four years ago, and CNN is now presenting it as some new "Freedom Project" ?
What's the source for the story? Al-Jeezera. There you go.
People like the ones posting here is why the rest of the world hates amerans. As an american, I loathe most of most of my fellow people too.
I'd like to believe the morons who posted her are jsut trolls, but they are the result of lazy and pathetic parenting.
hahahaha
If you hate America and Americans would you do us all a favor and leave?
Republican in the HOWZE...
the words troll and lazy = Republican, hate spewing beer brewin' Conservative.
ok jesus give me a passage where it says that you can be a master? There isn't. God put that passage in there because all of the "masters" would eventually be punished.
Disagree?
I might as well be reading Curious George!
Burning bush that talks? Smite a fig tree because it's out of season for figs? Cast my mother out as my followers are my family now? Resurrection? The "Devil" as a tangible being?
It's just as probable that a monkey in a rain slicker can deliver my newspaper.
Jesus does come off as a lunatic if you read the WHOLE bible, not just list convenient snippets to try and make your faulty point.
Enjoy your PHONY religion, stilted scriptures and general brainwashing. PS, don't forget to donate to keep the lie machine going.
I absolutely abhor people who use Christianity, or any other religion for that matter, for purposes of self indulgence.
This is not what Christianity is about.
Can we now forget about trying to re-hash all the old slavery issues that we had in the U.S. 200 years ago and keep our focus on those who are still held in slavery today. These kids are victims in the most direct sense of the word and those who wish to gain financial reparations for something that happened to their ancestors should re-focus their energies and try to stop the madness that continues to go on throughout the world.
There are groups that need your money so they can help stop this insane injustice. Find one and donate today.
We need the male relatives of those women and children being held as slaves to step up and stop this. If I found out that one of my relatives was being exploited like this, I would go with my machete in hand and slit a few throats. Extreme? Yes, but so is modern say slavery. Unless these slavemasters have an incentive to stop this, there will be no incentive to stop.
"Jesus" – IDIOT – there is more meaning to words than only the words themselves – and when you quote the N.T. of Jesus encouraging slaves to obey their masters – he wasn't talking about children slaves nor children forced into slave-labor related work like they had to do much less into prostitution.
Moron – put down the bible until you learn to read for CONTEXT as well as content.
Mr. OK,
I'm just going to respond this one last time; if you don't get it, it is because you don't want to. The original scrolls were in Greek and Hewbrew, of which I have visited Israel and seen some original scrolls on disiplay for myself Now, the Bible has been translated into many languages, German, French, English, Spanish, etc. Translations were not 100% accurate. There are many words in the Greek and Hebrew that cannot be directly translated into English, etc. Scholars have read the context of what is being discussed to render the proper definition. Even if you look up the word fear in the English dictionary, you will see a definition of "reverence". No one is trying to make you do anything. It is left with you to do the research and find out for yourself if you have the courage to seek the truth. Man is not smarter than God, who is the Creater of heaven and earth. That's all I intend to say on the subject.
Mr. PLOh, thank you so much for your input. I understand it now. You saw a couple of manuscripts on display, and you realize translations are not completely accurate... but nevertheless, you don't know Hebrew and Greek but you swallow the whole bible in English, with some research here and there and voila! you are the expert now!!
Funny evangelicals. I assume your son incarnate told you so. Thank you so much. I prefer not believe in fairy tales, I leave the fantasy stories to you.
I juts love those who claim that the Bible has contradictions yet cannot produce any. Remember, read the Bible in its context. But there is one caveat.
1Co 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
So don't get upset because you cannot understand God's Word. As a lost person you never will.
buaaaa!! I am a lost person.... LOL Citizen... is the rapture any time soon? I'd love to say bye-bye to you!!
@ Mr PLoh
the bible was written/revealed in ancient aramaic (now extinct)..Neither was it greek, nor hebrew just fyi
Ita funny, I just saw the freedom project on the tele today. Basically the wholemworld has slavery. It seemed like cnn wad going up a cliff. Look, I'm all for abolishing slavery, but the world has income disparities, so it will continue. Americans can't expect the whorl world to have their narrative, the world is simply poorer and people must make calculations that are at times very unsavory to political correctness that don't necessarily apply to our moral notions I'm the west.
I think it's a just cause. Ubt a bit naive. I mean cnn isn't going to accomplish much, if you grt my meaning.this id basically like trig to get rid of all glnoal poverty. Maybe in 50 60 years and thats if there are no setbacks with resource onctraitns...
So I think is is kind of an unending battle and setting yourself for failure. Its like they set out to eradicate all i inequity....I mean, it's going tovget depressing.....'freedom project 2020' Moscow, hoes it going over there?,...uh, trafficking has increased, 50 percent of the populatikm is a human trafficker?
That's f depressing CNN. Way to pick a fight we can't win just to depress the hell out of the viewer.
humans have always enslaved, tortured, murdered, raped, abused, lied, etc. It is part of our animal fabric. It won't change.
Your comments shows complete ignorance about human history. For the majority of human history (around 98% of it in fact), we lived in hunter gatherer collective societies. These societies are marked by a LACK of violence and social dysfunction. The fact is that it is civilization for social stratification that create social ills and mindless violence. Not some "animal" urge in the human animal.
Animal fabric? Speak for yourself. Man is a created being. You may choose to live the lie.
ah..!! how comforting Citizen's words are! The fun-loving-jesus freaks are always so loving! But your god failed in a cross, dude... yours is a dead god, no matter how amazing fantasy stories you make up to believe otherwise.
please don't insult the animal kingdom by comparaing them to us. They are civilized compared to humans. Population control is what this world needs to survied. A big natural diaster world wide , could give the races a chance to start over
i like you, jesus.
OK,
Your God, satan, whom you worship cause you to be schizophrenic... Now get behind me satan you foul spirit of lies.
The ignorance displayed in here is a major contributor as to why "BAD THINGS" happen out there!!! This piece of news to most of you has been a reality for thousands of years to the rest world. How will you process it in your mind and life will have an outcome that most likely will effectively affect others in the collective. Positively or Negatively will entirely be up the individual but it does reflect who or what the individual is at the time. Love, Peace God bless
Notice that CNN does not address the Muslim child slavery or the Cuban sex slaves?
OOPS! Not convenient to report. Perhaps they should relabel the headline to "Certain Slavery that CNN does not like"
Indeed! The majority of countries where these practices take place are majority Muslim countries; that is never pointed out though.
Similarly it is never pointed out in “American History” that slaves were traded by Muslims off the west coast of Africa for thousands of years before the United States was founded. Does anyone really think that the Persians didn't have slaves!?
Taking the name of the Lord in vain. Using Jesus for financial gain to the detriment of those who are doing the work. Children no less. I wish this sounded far fetched but it doesn't surprise me in the least.
Fyreflye, here's a clue-by-four for you: The original text was translated to "slave." YOUR copy of "the bible" was re-translated and modernized so the average westerner wouldn't realize what he or she was actually reading. YES, the Bible supported slavery. Older translations (and unless you can read GREEK, they're all translations) said "slave" in most places where you see the word "servant." In fact, before slavery was ended in the United States, slave owners specifically used the Bible to keep their slaves subservient.
It's a shame that human trafficking isn't a well known problem. It exists all over the world, in every country, and the usual victims are children and women from impoverished nations such as those in eastern Europe. More effort should be made to root out these traffickers.
Aside from donating your money, how about we open our eyes. Don't solicit sex on the streets, don't go on the internet to meet boys/girls/women and men for sex. Hire Americans with a SS number to work. Pay attention at your bars and restaurants, do the employees seem natural, like they want to be there? Are they American? If you suspect something, do something, go to the local police station (after you sober up) and report your suspicions. By ignoring what we see around us perpetuates the problem. Stand up for those that can't stand up for themselves...That's what Jesus did!
you just proved why religion is bad
wow! what a string of comments... doubt CNN wanted you to focus on religion or even try to justify the existence of slavery.
We all have the potential of slaving ppl around even if not to the full extent of it mentioned in the examples above. Our respect and treatment of people reflects that.
I have seen slavery, house help in this region has been abused at times and considered slavery. It is sad, and it must change. But it seems we can get very lost in discussions like the above that we forget faith, even worse we forget humanity.
No, THE ROMANS condoned slavery. You have to remember that the gospels were written around the time Rome was putting the hammer down on the Jews. The Christians were working really, really hard at differentiating themselves from the rebellious Jews, so a lot of the gospels are decidedly conformist. Jesus had a lot more in common with Arafat than Gandhi. It was later writers that cherry-picked and put words in his mouth that made him into the patron of the turn-the-other-cheek-because-there's-no-alternative downtrodden.
Elites love Christ. He keeps everybody else under control.
slavery forced by economics? I wonder if this is slavery by a Western standard. throughout the developing world, people , including children, work for pennies a day t eek out an existence. they aren't necessarily forced by others, but by the economic situation. and how much do you think those chinese workers were paid to produce the camera that the photographer from this series used to shoot photos of slavery?
The truth about the bible is that Christianity does not have a common book of reference. It stole much of what is contained in the Jewish Tora or text (old testament). It further took what is called the new testament which is what JESUS (a rabbi/teacher of the Jewish religion) was alleged to have said. Then, which one is the Christian text? I think we should forget all these argument.
It will never end, just like corruption never ends anywhere, just like the we pay through the nose for gas and food, it will never end. Just like Wall Street is corrupt and everyone in Washington, it will never end. If there is a higher power than we mere humans you would think that he/she/it would end this corruption and stop slavery and all kinds of evilness in the world. I would if I had all that kind of power. 24,000 chidren die everyday in the world, what kind of a god allows for that?
I watch CNN for the latest news, although your initiative is compelling, I will be tuning out CNN in the future as the news is what I value in your programming. I honestly feel depressed after watching the same story over and over. Stick to the news please!
Joe, you are dead inside and obviously you are also brain dead.
Cnn should not just have a light on it , they should be keeping a light on it ,a huge light ! i would say a good media outlet is a media outlet that tackles priorities and tackles them until they erode.. helping innocent children and protecting them is in my mind a major priority.. let me say that again " A MAJOR PRIORITY "
who suffers the most ? come on who suffers the most.. yes a young child.. get your priorities right media outlets.. shine a light on the hidden things that go on in our world... root out this suffering. !
Well said. I agree!!
"you're new here aren't you" what an asinine thing to say
Thank you for this article, CNN. I would really like more information about this. Please continue to write about this. I would also appreciate it if you would write about anything ordinary citizens can do to help with this very sad problem.
The Bible does not support slavery. Jesus does not support slavery.
http://www.wallbuilders.com/LIBissuesArticles.asp?id=120
And the countless children, boys and girls, whom are taken from their homeland in the middle-east(Iran, Afghanistan) and brought to Saudi Arabia where they are forced into prostitution. Lets not forget them either.
Human traficking is a REAL problem with concequences that stretch on to future generations.
Some people are just disgusting human beings
Boys in Ghana forced to work. Teens raped in Haiti. And American kids brainwashed into immorality and deviant behavior by "role models" such as Lady Gaga. It's tough being a kid whereever you are.
proving once again 70%of amle adults should be castrated.....depicable what they do to children!
Keep voting Republican, slavery is making a big comeback in the US.
When are the liberals going to wake up and realize we need slaves in the US too if we're going to compete with these "emerging markets?" We are here to serve The Economy.
Never mind the child slaves. There are whales and horses to be saved.
And dolphins.
Yeah...but the bible says to respect your slave master and treat him as you would god. Sorry CNN, according to Justin Bieber and Pat Robertson, you are wrong, slavery is awesome and everything happens for a reason. Praise Jesus!
The biggest tragedy with the sex slavery industry is the overwhelming demand. With no demand, there would be no pimps and no women and girls forced into slavery. We need to condemn and punish this demand at its root. It's just disgusting that people would do something like this to each other.
I beat and sodomized a pimp using a broom handle with razor wire wrapped around it
I TOTALLY AGREE!
THESE BASTERDS' ARE RUNNING AROUND GETTING AWAY WITH HARMING AND TREATING R CHILDREN AND OTHER ADULTS INHUMAN
THEY DONT DESERVE A TRIAL THROW THEN IN A CELL LIKE YOU SAID AND BE DUN WITH EM!
That's kinda funny, yet pretty sick. Do you hate God because of your disability? Isn't it just about time to do your homework, or take the trash out? Mom must not be home. huh?
Anyone that says Jesus condoned slavery is wrong. Anyone who would enslave another, particularly a child should be hanged or shot.
When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property. (Exodus 21:20-21 NAB)
"To me, slavery means one person who is completely under the control of another person, that they use violence to maintain that control, they exploit them, make money out of them and that the [victim] just can't walk away,"
---
Sounds like the basic operating plan of the conservative agenda.
I laughed 🙂
Sucks to be us, because it is a sad and unnerving truth, but we aren't going anywhere except the ground. When you die you brain shuts down and you never think again, that's it, it isn't complicated. Scary and unnerving sure, but not complicated.
No surprise. Can guarantee. European Intel agencies, U.S. Intel agencies, the U.N., Vatican... every single institution of international scale KNOWS EXACTLY what is happening with this barbaric, wicked trade. Why do they let it continue? THEY ALL get something out of it. All will use some pathetic excuse as to why it is allowed to continue. One of the greatest lies believed by the people of this world is that their 'leaders' actually care about them. It's laughable for anyone to believe that. Look around folks. It doesn't matter what country your in or from. The people the world over have been sold out by a bunch of self-serving bureaucrats.
Exactly!!!!!!!
Who cares what Jesus thought? For people to believe that, somehow, the "Wrath of God" will punish these degenerates is ludicrous. God has already given us the tool to use against them, the human mind. Instead, we sit around discussing a man-made artifact as if it will reveal some secret.
Don't lie to me like CNN. None of you give a rats @ss, as long as you get you're cheap cars, houses and food. That's the truth!
We're all slaves to corporate greed!
Isn't religeous affiliation just GREAT! All the bad things that occur throughout the world, have a direct coralation to religeon!!
Buy only FAIR TRADE.
Don't you people have anything better to do than argue over the internet? I'm just a student looking at some new articles on CNN, and I scroll down to find a bunch of "adults" bickering like a bunch of morons. Nothing any of you have said helps this article in any way. Maybe you should all find something productive to do, or go learn something, instead of wasting time on the internet bickering.
!.
Jesus, I am nominating you for troll of the year!
We need help not from congress but our self . congress politicians are rich they dont care about us people. cant u realize that, they do everything to make us poor and get them richer,we need to stand up for our selfs and dont pay taxes and say enough is enough u greedy besrards.
yet no one understands why arabs muslims and others get visas and are allowed to enter our country legally, but the mexicans that bust their asses and actually want to help make this place better to live and support our economy are not even given a second thought.
Stop believing in earthly gods. Christ was / is an earthly god. Do good to others and you are saved. That is it.
Why is ANY of this ANY of my concern? Its not my country. Why should I shed a tear, give a dime, etc for something which is happening in another country and, moreover, condoned in that country? I thought we had our own problems here in the US and people are tired of the US being the "worlds policeman."
So again, why should I even care? There are 12 yr old prostitutes right here in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Detroit, New York, and cities inbetween. People in this country are dying everyday. Transients/homeless, but I should care about what occurs 6-7 thousand miles away?
We all know why it's so easy to bag on Christianity. It's simple, Christians won't kill you for it. Really though, are their any religious texts on this planet that don't speak of slavery and multiple wives? Fanatical adherents stand out but are not the norm by any means. Very few Christians have multiple wives and none are practicing slavery. Can the same be said by other faiths? The greatest perversion happens when faith is allowed to govern. The rules are too old and lack the dynamic pace of today's society. They were also written during a time when few people could read. All of these things should be cause for ALL faiths to reexamine their charters. The fact that slavery still occurs in the world is one reason I personally have little sympathy for descendants of slaves who have known freedom for well over a century. The money wasted on this shakedown in America would go a LONG way toward ending slavery worldwide. If slavery is really the issue in America instead of ways to get a free ride.
Grobbbbbbbbbbb
All this talk of slavery being acceptable and in the bible/other holy books is flat out disgusting. Religion and knowledge must be balanced, and today's international laws clearly state slavery in all forms is illegal. Those who support it are criminals. Bigots have no place in the discussion. We are talking fundamental human rights.
most of those who traffic, are not very smart. People for some odd reason just look the other way.
It is unfortunate the hate that people have in the heart for the Lord. Instead of taking the time to understand the "Word of God' they want to mock it and yes take it out of context. While I am not trying to convince you what the word says.. I recommend if your intent is to learn and I believe the Holy Spirit is pricking your heart.. take the time and study. .the Word and not just listen to the words and opinions of others. What you will find is yes .. Paul who is the author of the verse you are refering to was referencing "endentured servants" who were indebted to their employers for a specific period of time but no longer than 7 years. But if you study even further you will understand that Paul considered himself a "slave" to Jesus Christ bought with a price and his message was to the "Christians not to be conformed to the world but to be transformed by the "renewing of their mind" and live you life as a living sacrifce which is your reasonable service." But there is so.. ..much you can learn if you open your heart to receive Him as Lord and savior of your life. I pray that God will touch your heart and you will receive his grace and mercy. In Jesus Name Amen
And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death. -Exodus 21:16.
Slavery, where you submit yourself to lifelong service in exchange for lifelong food, housing and medical care was not a bad deal in the ancient world, and is not condemned by the Bible.
Stealing or kidnapping people in the Bible was condemned, and so any institution based on kidnapping would be condemned by the Bible.
Case closed, game over.
Some of these people want to become slaves because it is the only thing they can do to survive. Then when someone gets arrested all of a sudden they are "victims". Stamping this out seems impossible to me.
Please do not focus on making this a debate over Christian beliefs and the right and wrong that you feel goes along with them. This is an article to raise awareness about modern day slavery. Whether you follow the ways of Jesus, Buddha, or you follow your own free will, as a human being living on this planet during this time you should feel compassion for all who are enslaved and do what it takes to help raise awareness and help them out if you can.
Don't forget the hundreds of millions of American slaves who work until the middle of April every year as slaves to the Federal Government.
Sent to Juvenile detention for "prostitution" after going to the police for help???!!! Excuse me? sounds like the police are equally guilty of perpetuating this..... That's a crime in and of itself, and the courts have their hands dirty too. If you're a juvenile involved in sex, and I don't care if it's by consent, IT'S A JUVENILE AND THEREFORE IT IS RAPE!!! What is this country coming to? That disgusted me.... That is a warped sense of justice, and THAT needs looking into just as much as the traficking.
the bible does condone slavery
Once again, all those quotes from the Bible show that it was written by males for the benefits of the males.
BINGO!
If all you see in this story is just another weapon to use against Republicans, Democrats, Christians or capitalists, you need glasses very badly indeed. Try to see beyond your own favorite agenda and THINK for a moment instead of digging deeper into your usual polemic rut. Geez, and people wonder why nothing ever gets done about things like this. This is why. They look at the problem for two seconds and then go back to their same old hobbyhorses. Phfft.
And what are you doing?
So why don't you sign up?
In the name of religion we are already condemned. People die daily and most horribly all in the name of religion. People pose to do good and rob and rape woman and children. Most killings are related to whatever they believe and decipher their bible. We don't have a God, since everyone claims to be one already.
Watching the video, I find it interesting that the majority of those involved in the work are white. Only a few people people at the round table are of diverse colors/races. Do blacks, Asians, etc., not help their own?
bottom lline– dudes need it, kids can't fight back, and we're going to get it one way or another!
fixed that for ya.
wrong comment...ignore.
all the great wonders of the world -created by one form of slavery or another. white house built by slaves- and empires are built by captured armies. I certainly dont want to be enslaved , but gotta admit ,things got done.
CNN really had to dig to find an example of slavery in the US and a Christian no less. So maybe slavery in the USA represents less than 1% of slavery in world. Why not an honest report CNN?
slavery in the united states is very alive .. a HUGE percentage of the human slaves in the world are at some point trafficked through US borders. Maybe you should do your research through more than just one CNN article.. eh?
How did the thread get derailed into a conversation about scripture, instead of the focus of the article...the involuntary servitude of children? At different times in history, slavery existed. I don't know that anyone is/was condoning the practice; simply stating the obvious. I think that modern man has been led to believe that slavery has been abolished and yet these examples indicate that it has not. Do we believe that slavery is acceptable and appropriate? Do we believe that children should be unfed, beaten, and forced into unspeakable acts? IMHO, this is where our outrage should be directed, instead of towards anonymous posters who are attempting to flame the thread.
Those poor people!!! It makes me sick to think that this is happening in the day and age that we live in...you would have thought we would have come much further than this. Sick, greedy people are what causes this. I hope the ones who inflict the pain also receive it in mass amounts back and soon!!!
"Experts agree the vast majority of slaves today live in Asia and the Pacific"
The Pacific? Where exactly in the Pacific? California, Alaska, Japan, Chile, Mexico, Tahiti, Hawaii?
All the slavery examples cited are from Africa, Europe, North America, and the Middle East.
Good point. Let's see some sources here. Thailand's sex trade (which is not necessarily all staffed by child sex slaves) is household knowledge, but I would like to see the numbers on slaves by country, gender, and the nature of the work. India probably has more sex slaves than Thailand, and Africa is famous for slaves forced to mine diamonds or harvest cocoa. I'd be willing to bet Africa is still the biggest problem.
We are the only species that hate, abuse and kill our own kind arbitrarily. We are doomed to self destruct. Winners in the end? Cockroaches.
Amen, AL, and he KILLED any body who bucked him!!! lol
Lets Face it, chicks dont give it up enough, so ugly men with no game kinda need the sex trade.....
then theres hugh grant, clinton, the baldwins, tiger, kobe, rothesberger (BIG BEN!!), the list goes on,..
tons of dudes from the US that cant get laid any other way go to thailand or phillipines on "vacation" to see the "countrys natural beauty" hahaha, riiiiiiight, innocent sightseeing
bottom lline– dudes need it, chicks got it, and we're going to get it one way or another!
it hasnt changed throughout all the time of human civilization, you dummies really think cnn's article and a buncha do-good weak activists, and zainy religious beliefs, are going to stop the juggernaut of MILLIONS of years of evolved human male desire??? really???
MEN WANNA DO IT WITH CHICKS, YOU WILL NEVER STOP SLAVERY OR SEX TRADES UNTILL YOU STOP THAT URGE,
Sista, i dont see that happening anytime during your lifetime
The story opens with a pretty broad definition of "slavery". A touring boy's choir is a great example of bringing starving, homeless, beggars off the streets of a country that does not care for them and taking the group all over the world to visit, sing, explore, and enjoy a 1000% better existence than they had. They received some token cash for kids expenses, but everything else was covered. Let's just leave the christian stuff out of this because it is irrelevant. I was in a boys choir as a kid and we had a blast on the road trips and visited people and places that would not have happened another way. We got an envelope with a few bucks every month for spending money. Combining a choir on tour to the sexual exploitation of young girls in the mid-east and asia shows the author is an easily duped fool with an aenda.
The earth will survive but will the humans? Greed rules man. Genocide, war, population repression, etc is our history that we repeat over and over. You hear stories like this and you wonder why man can't be better than this....
Greed causes war. Not religion
all men of human destruction, abuse will suffer revenge from the almighty GOD.
Tragic, but why have you not included children in Colombia who are kidnapped by the drug cartel and forced to be child soldiers and workers in their production centers? Bear in mind that 90 percent of the cocaine entering the USA comes from Colombia. The 20 million Americans that consume cocaine create the demand for cocaine and that demand drives the kidnapping of innocent children in Colombia. We are the cause of all children's suffering and itis within our power to stop it.
This seems like an issue for Columbia. If that government and culture rejected widespread corruption then cocaine would not be mass produced that thus resulting in a lower supply in the world and higher prices. Which will force more people to reconsider consumer an expensive drug. You cant blame people who are sold and forced to consume an extremely addictive product for all the problems in the world. When you can get to the source and kill the supply.
I wish they'd talk about about chocolate slavery here. It seems some subjects are untouchable in the US since chocolate is such big money here, but if we profit or enjoy cocoa farmed by slaves in West Africa, we are spitting on the graves of the 350,000+ young men who died in the Union Army alone so that men would never benefit from slave labor again. Basically they died so people could still profit from slavery on the other side of an imaginary line on the Earth.
Sorry the USA isn't allowed to insure any choirs donations go to the kids, it's in another country and the laws let the parents/keepers be d-bags.
I also notice a lot of the kid sex problems keep coming from Muslim dominated areas...as well as the same old offenders like Africa....
Ever think these people just don't see a child as a person with rights so they can be used how ever? At 18 do they throw them into the streeet and grab a new child?
Sorry slaves of the world, if we help you....
We just get blamed for wanting oil.
Your on your own.
Don't feed the trolls...
JESUS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. AND IT WAS SLAVES IN THE PAST THEY SAID SERVANTS TO MAKE HIM SOUND MERCIFUL. ITS NOT ABOUT RELIGION IS ABOUT COMMON SENSE. SLAVERY IS WRONG ANY WAY YOU PUT IT. AND PRAYING FOR THIS KIDS IS NOT GONNA DO ANYTHING TAKING ACCTION WILL.
He did, or at least, people attribute such violence to him. In any case, it goes to show that you have to THINK when you read the Bible. Taking it word for word is lazy. There is no step-by-step guide to knowing God and getting into Heaven. If there was, OBVIOUSLY we would ALL do it.
We are NOT,there some of us that don't spread wickedness!
Get a grip People we were taught Right from wrong !Yea Gods that powerful! To tell us straight to our Hearts!!
This seems to be a biased article that it is almost comical to read.....100% ignores the large number of American girls that are being kidnapped and forced into prostitution in Mexico, or the large number of refugees in the middle east being forced into slavery and prostitution. What about the 13 year old american girl last week that was going to be forced into an arranged marriage in Pakistan? They open this article with a singing group that was brought to the US and did not see the profits from their performances? Does this trump the Lords resistance army in the congo forcing 6 year old bnoys to shoot thier friends and forcing them to become soilders? This article seems to strangely igonore some of the worst examples of slavery in the world for some reason.
Slavery indeed comes in many disguises. The main approach in solving this is like in solving most crimes – FOLLOW THE MONEY ! That is quite easy to do yet difficult to carry out because authorities are paid also to look the other way.
People have changed widely during the last decade, mentalities have changed as well, and normal people, nowadays, minds only their own business, in global we don't care about the others.
But making life better for the others, and especially the children, will for sure change the future of our children as well, the way of thinking is an elementary key to eradicate modern slavery in each and different way.
No religion at all including Islam are encouraging or pushing people to exploit others, we are a society of tolerance and compassion, and perverting others lives and dreams is violation of their legal rights that god has given it to all the humanity. Therefore, everyone has the right to be free and to choose the way they want to live their own dreams.
In my point of view, i think that the governments (in Africa and south Asia)should make a law to insure the protections of the lives of young boys and girls, for their young ages ( from their birth until they finish high school), and to punish each one who interferes without any right in their lives.
We have enough problems in this country to worry about. As far as the suffering of others, too bad, so sad.
I am going to pray for you. Pray that you die of cancer, that is.
Micheal the ark Angel, who stands up for children of the people will not forget, nor does God when you touch a child in a unclean way,God will put army on people such as those ,Grevious people!God Bless Courage, our Children need it!
He's taking His sweet time, isn't He?
@ Love for Children, why don't you learn a bit about spelling, grammar, and composition? Reading you was torture.
This is how I feel with Obama being the pres.
America is a country of slaves. You lost your freedom to the military industrial complex when kennedy was shot and your balls when dictator bush murdered 3000 of your citizens to plunge you into endless war. Your government is is a giant corporate controlled ponzi scheme with more police forces to control and manipulate the population than any other country in the history of the world. You can't even step out of line in the privacy of your own bedroom anymore without cops sneaking around in your house. Enjoy your Patriot Act much?
No, and I'm not glad to be an American. Everything you say is100% correct!
So the 13 year old girl runs to the police to get away from her captor and they throw her in juvie for a year for prostitution? This cannot be true. Am I the only one worried about that part?
Why, Harry, because the police would NEVER do a wrong stupid thing. Think, if you can, again.
It's absolutely true. Any American born sex slave, if they ask the police for help, go to jail for prostitution, even though it's illegal to have sex with a minor. There's a reason most don't ask for help.
For those who r for slavery u r f**cking idiots lets c if you feel the same when its ur sister, niece, or girlfriend being raped and pimped.
Gloria, did you help those people hurt Children,I'm asking because you put animals above our children! You are Sick!!!
CNN-
Awesome that you're reporting on this. But stop writing that you're "shedding light" on the issue, or that you're "ending modern-day slavery." First off, this is not gonzo journalism. You are not a character in this story. Second, you are decades, if not centuries, late. Marginalized news sources and NGOs have been reporting on this forever, and maybe if you had brought it into the mainstream media a little bit earlier (rather than focusing on celebrity news such as Charlie Sheen's breakdown), there would be more activism around the issue, and "modern slavery" could have already become a contradiction in terms.
Honestly, it's great, great, great that you're taking on this issue. But have some humility, have some shame.
Matt Hershberger
Nicely put, sir.
Human beings SUCK.
While you all are arguing about what Jesus said and didn't say, meant ot didnt mean, and if the bible is the holy truth or not.... There are still 11 year old girls being raped in America and then being arrested for going to the police. Thank you all for demonstrating so effectively why religion in any shape or form is a detriment to society. Now quit your pointless and petty bickering and call your local lawmakers and demand that they grant amnesty to child prostitues!!
I'm with you,they should be plagued,Big time!
Let's give you a taste of the slave life and then we will get your opinion.
The Bible dealing with slavery, which was a huge part of life under Roman rule where nearly a half of the population were slaves, and condoning it are TWO VERY DIFFERENT THINGS. Slavery was not going to end in Jesus' day so He (actually the Apostle Paul in this scripture) dealt with reality and taught servants/slaves how to live within the realities of their world. Slaves were converting to Christianity by the droves because of the peace that it offered regardless of their earthly circumstances. The book of Philemon is all about Paul trying to achive the freedom of a slave – Onesimus. The scriptures you are quoting teach a principle for life and it is what gave us "The Protestant Work Ethic", which is at the heart of all Western Civilization.
Teaching people how to deal with realities of their life – in this instance slavery – is a far cry from condoning it. In the Kingdom of God there is neither slave or free for we are all the same before God, which is the ultimate teaching of Jesus Christ.
In 2000, to get the law passed, they estimated that 50,000 people were trafficked into the US. In Nov 2008, the Washington Post reported the State Dept's own admission of great difficulty in finding real victims. They have found 1100 in 8 years. By the 400,000 they should have found, they were less than 1% accurate.
Lately, I have heard they estimate 200,000 people trafficked into the US annually. So, I guess when they blatantly and irresponsibly overestimate the numbers, the solution to quadruple that number and start sensationalizing that. I am so sick of the media and politicians entertaining the lies of zealots.
We are people who have been raised different. There are parents out there that never taught their childern right from wrong. Those that use slaves are wrong, no ,matter what way you look at it, we will always be a slave in one way or another. To the government, to your boss, everyone is a slave. Some forms are worse.
The last time a bunch of negros sold other negros into slavery the white american was blamed. Who can we blame now?
Don't worry too long, or too much about SEX SLAVERY.....
The world is scheduled to end in MAY 2012....
We all will be doomed....
@Ken, nice logic – use one media source to discredit another and then conclude the media is the fault. Take a look at your own zealotry, bub.
Silas, it was the State Dept's own admission....or do you not read very well. I used the State depts numbers to discredit the media and the sensationalists.
Catholic's Do you feel like Gods closing in on your Harlots,Mystery babylon the Great ,the mother Harlots and abominations of the Earth! NOW WhaT!
Babylon is in the Middle East, you stupid hack. The Vatican is located in ITALY!
Please stop arguing about religion! No matter what you say, whether you're right or wrong, you'll always, ALWAYS, be contradicted because someone else has their own opinion. This is what starts wars.
The topic of this article is that there is modern-day slavery, and people have to look past their own life, and try to help out the cause of ending slavery once and for all. Everyone has their own problems, but we can all bear them together, and work together to solve each of them. In this situation, slavery is the problem that needs to be adressed. Yes the world is full of problems, but if we tackle each one together, sometime in the future we might be getting some place, that place being in a better state than the one we're in now.
It's our world and we live in it, it's up to us if we want to save it or destroy it.
INTOLERANCE is a mental disorder
dear CNN, Please continue to get the word out about sex slavery and how horrible it is. Please also remember that a huge percentage of sex slaves are at some point trafficked through the united states. If you made that fact public more readers might understand the importance of these articles. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Ok Miriam, here are the stats.
You have to acknowledge the facts and stop the hysterics. No problem will be solved in hysterics.
CNN has their own sex slaves. There...I just posted it on wikipedia and people will believe me because they're MORONS
By Harlots I do mean your Dam priest, and your Doctrines, that really are Not of God,and 666 ,We are not numbered, but NAMED!
Wanna start another 30 years war? Bring it, protestant scum!
'scripture' is BS
Well, your enslaved by your stupidity so I guess you would know
Exodus 21: 20 “If a man beats his male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies as a direct result, he must be punished, 21 but he is not to be punished if the slave gets up after a day or two, since the slave is his property.
So I don't really see what the problem is as long as you don't get so rough with them that they almost die or something.
Just thinking if Christ wanted to save millions of suffering maybe he should have mentioned slavery was wrong, rather than blowing it off but making sure everyone knew instead, that it's okay to eat lobster.
The Vatican is in your minD,Now Go figure.Stupid Not,go look in the mirror at your forehead, you tell me what you see coming forth,Mark of the Beast
wow no wonder amaricans get called stupid with names like hotdogbuns, judge dred. And so guy who calls himself jesus
@ Love for Children, should I assume correctly that you aren't Christian at all, right? With THAT language and THAT attitude, I don't see how could you be one... For the record.. I am not Christian...
the people condoning slavery, I bet wouldn't last 1 hour in the conditions some of these children are forced in to. Unfortunately, the internet is full of people who like to give opinions for the sake of starting arguments. While everyone is allowed to express their opinions, you should not retaliate with a reply of your own. This does not help the issues that are being addressed in this post. Whether or not you are religious, spiritual, or Agnostic no one should be forced into any situation, no matter its context, sexual or physical labor. Everyday we go to work to make money to pay our bills and we survive. These people, (mostly children & youth) are forced to do jobs that none of use would do and are not being paid for it. In fact they are being abused and damaged as human beings. They are being raped, and worked until death in most cases. People in the united states are so passionate about stopping puppy mills and yet children are dying all over the world in less than favorable conditions. Think about someone other than yourself for a change and dont argue over the politics of the situation just try and help.
Oh so anyone who has a different opinion than yours should not post. Well, sorry but democracy doesn't work that way Adolf.
Agreed. The question is... HOW to help? It's a start that this article raises some awareness.
To clarify, I'm agreeing with "Would You Miss Me." You raised some good points. I understand the message behind your words. I'm sorry that someone would equate your intentions with Adolf Hitler.
What was that ,I wasn't talking your babylon language perfecty,And Jesus won't allow your Catholic Abominations to continue, and believe you do have the mind of the Beast, and guess what True Saints have been at war already with your Blasphemous state of Being!Gods not mocked you will reap what you sew
>>sigh<< poor English!
And they say that life under white folk was bad......gimme a break !
Ephesians 6 says this... Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free. And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.
So you can see that Paul was telling the masters and slaves to treat each other the same way which then defeats the whole system of calling someone your slave or calling someone your master. Paul was saying that we should all love one other and treat each other as we would want to be treated. But not only that but to continue to act like Christ. Christ was beaten, spit on, etc. but he still loved. Christians are called to be Christ followers and to look more like him everyday. He challenges everyone to change their lives to look more like him. That includes the masters, the slaves, the greedy, the poor, the impatient, the alcoholic, the sex addict, the ignorant, the liar, the angry, the thief, the ones that gossip, the materialistic, etc. We all struggle with something and God challenges us all to change more everyday.
Ain't we all slaves in modern worl nowadays? The Author of the article can be told to remove certain paragraphs by his line, as we say everyone has his/her price... we are being owned by multinationlas.... In the near futre we are going to have fewer powerful pimps. You can't remove the oldest relationship of slave & Ruler in the world.....
WE ARE ALL S-E-X SLAVES......
Some to our husbands, some to our wives.....girlfriends, boyfriends....etc..
That's why domestic violence exists...
Right ?????
I'm under the assumption that most of the people who have commented on this board are not lacking in compassion, but yes, have felt something and there is probably an energy running through them which they channel with these self-righteous comments, or making wisecracks and simply trying to one-up one another with intellectual statements.
Ultimately, we're all in the same boat – clueless as to how to go about producing a change and waiting on the next guy. Perhaps we could shift the discussion... We're all living in this world, after all.
Why do you talk like this "jesus"? Do you know is blasphemy against God's Word the Bible? Check the scriptures well, and do not read but STUDY IT to understand the context and apply them appropriately. Jesus while on earth proved to be a very loving and fine shepherd who cared for his sheep's (followers/disciples) and laid down his life on behalf of them. that's the kind of master he encourages all be become and not the tyrants we have today in this wicked system of things. Very soon God will destroy all wicked people from the earth and fill it with clean and righteous people who will leave forever in peace and security. (Psalm 37:9-11)
Being an English and Soft skill trainer, my job includes mobilizing the rural youth drop-outs of Andhra Pradesh, an Indian state, directing them to training centres, introduce them to the Corporate Soft skills and job skills, provide them with decent jobs. Recently, I had a chirpy young man, Ganesh at the training centre. Before joining the program, he worked as an assistant at Wine store. He borrowed 20thousnad bucks from his owner to build a small house in the village. Did not repay the amount, found the training program more interesting, hence was here. He had been to the village recently on Census registration, was tracked by his erstwhile owner and was forced to take up the job in the wine store again until the debt is repaid, without any salary. He met me, "Madam, I can't help it. Please allow me to go back, work for a month or so, or else, he would disturb my family." Being helpless I let him go off. The other day he was on phone, "Madam, do you remember me? Just a month. I'll be back. Would you promise me a decent job?" I said, "Why not?" In many Indian states, the youth are being forced into a slavery of this sort which shows them the darker side of the life. I do agree with Bale, to tackle this issue, one has to tackle the politics, religion, economy and society first. But is it possible when the world has more non-democratic and selfish leaders? I'd just pray..HEAL THE WORLD, MAKE IT A BETTER PLACE..FOR YOU AND FOR ME AND THE ENTIRE HUMAN RACE."
Human Rights is a global issue I would like to suggest a journalistic documentary which will reveal for the first time on film the hideous truth behind the manufacturing of German and international chocolate, as sold and enjoyed in Germany and the rest of the world.
Watch the documentary "The Dark Side of Chocolate"
People are so scared of death they'll believe anything.....
1st of all, this is Paul's writing. If you know anything about scripture, contradicts several of Jesus' teaching. Jesus never condoned slavery. He promoted treating your neighbor as you, yourself would like to be treated. Most so-called 'Christians' are really 'Paulians' and know very little or nothing of Jesus' true teachings. 2nd, there are several Books of scripture that were discarded from the Bible that we read today. The powers of this world give the sheep what they want them to have. Of course a master wants his slave to believe such foolish writing. What about this though, "No man can serve two Masters, he must love ONE and hate the other." Figure that one out!
To the comments below (talking about Jesus/slavery):
"And the problem it seems, is with you and me...not the Love who came to repair everything." -David Crowder Band
Sometimes Scripture is hard to understand, and I don't have all the answers. But what I have found is that God is Good (even though Satan likes to make me think otherwise).
God (The Father, Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit) is GOOD, is LOVE, and desires all people to come to Him. If you have a problem with Him, tell Him. And if you truly want answers to questions that you have about Scriptures, seek Him and you will surely find.
Jesus is my Savior, and the Savior of the world. Say crap about me, say crap about His followers, but PLEASE don't say crap about Him. The crazy thing is, though, even if you were to crucify His name, He would say, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." Oh yea, and then He would reign victorious because He IS the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. There is none like HIM.
if you read chapter 1 of 1 Timothy you will find he mentions the law being for the ungodly and sinners and then lists a whole bunch of bad, unlawful scenarios..... oh and right after saying it is for those who have a twisted view of sex you have. " It is for people who buy and sell slaves. " If Paul thought it was all gravy then why mention slavers with those who kill their fathers or mother, murderers, liars and anything else that is the opposite of true teaching." I am a Christian but i also recognize that Paul wrote this " letter " as guidance for current situations to help the church Timothy was involved with to survive. I also understand there were many other scriptures removed from the Bible of today and many scriptures that were used in the time of Jesus that we don't have today. God will reveal to you the truth if you want it...to me that is an important factor regarding the Bible. Man wrote it... man is not perfect...man has altered it...man reads it everyday and studies it for generations and still disagrees on the content. I encourage everyone to read the Bible and develop your own personal relationship with God. Don't just believe what you are told. Let God reveal Himself. I do not see slavery ever being made extinct due to the fact that people would rather argue over personal beliefs than help free millions of men, women and children that are made to suffer everyday of their short lives.
You know what, You, and ALL of you talking about the damn BIBLE in terms of slavery : WAKE THE Fxxx UP!! Slavery is real- people are being trafficked- would you be preaching about the bible if you were the one tied up against your will, starving, with 10 dudes in your behind, one after the other, for 5 hours straight, just as an INITIATION!!??? Or, how about moving bricks, starving, beaten daily, with a hopeless, empty, heart and mind, for weeks and months, years on end- do you still believe, even then, because some book, oh, Im sorry ...the word of "JESUS" or "GOD" that, thats ok, you should have no free will, and you should be raped of everything HUMANE. No, no, its ok, because someone who wrote a book said so. How dare you use that as an excuse to okaying slavery. Walk in their shoes you ignorant fool. ONLY THEN could someone like you people condone such bullxxxx.
Slavery in these modern times illustrates the base aspects of some members of humanity. There are people who grow to become icons of greatness as did Ghandi, Martin Luther King and others; they wanted all of humanity to ascend into a place where all of us could a better kind of people.
But there are others now who have absolutely no conscience at all toward other people. They can rape, beat, and listen to cries for pity from their victims. They use these people up as one would chew up a piece of gum. They think, "If they die, they die. So what?" If I can sell them so much the better."
We as a people have not evolved into a better generation of humanity that has more compassion. We remain the same sort of people as we were in the 1600's when the slave trade in The South of America was common. Our technology and knowlege have progressed, but we as a people have not. What a shame for humanity.
Thanks in advance and good luck! 🙂
